This immigrant story is common to many families, and needs to be documented.

As for your Tennessee group of Culberts, who is the earliest KNOWN ancestor? I'll check my database, and email you what I have on them.

As for your Chester, PA connection, my Culberts were also in the Chester, PA area. We may have a distant connection here. Researching living persons is quite difficult, but if you tell me what is KNOWN, I'll try to help find this James.

Contact me directly: [jhculbert at yahoo.com]

Culbert, Mathew of Alabama

I am a great, great, great Granddaughter of Matthew Culbert who emigrated to Marshall Country Alabama in 1836. All info we have found states his birth as 10 Aug. 1803. We now have information that implies his birth to have been prior to 1803 as he was a small child living with the Park Family in Balleegahan, Mannorcunningham, Ireland in May of 1803. Also living with the Park's was Matthews sister Nancy (not known of before & never mentioned in family history). There was another brother that has never been mentioned the family histories and that is the younger brother Joesph who drowned the voyage from Ireland in 1841. Coming to America in 1841were Elizabeth, Nancy and Joesph. (Joesph wrote part of a letter that is in the possession of Mary Ruth Culbert Heath and of which I have a copy.) Their passage was paid in full by sister Ester Jane who was living in Philidelphia. Also now know that Ester Jane married her cousin Robert Culbert who accompanied her and James to America on the ship Amy. Do not know when marriage took place but info is on death certificate discovered by my sister Allison Simpson.

Also have information from an old family bible about first child of Matthew and Elizabeth Ann Armstrong Culbert. The child was named Easter Jane and she died in 1846 either at birth or shortly thereafter. She is buried at Haney's Chapel next to James Culbert the emigrant.

Anyone have any more info please share

Barbara

Bill,

I also would like to know Mathew's parents. I'm afraid it is going to require extensive and expensive searches of County Antrim parish records, and that may also be unsuccessful. Should you ever find, out please let me know.

Because of your work on this family, I assume you are related. Would you mind telling me how?

Also, do you know the connection of Catherine McCutchen Culbert, who has been associated with this Culbert family by some researchers?

On this Culbert family, I have done some research in the newspaper record on those in Amador County, CA.
This is to add an additional note from my to do list to the prior posting for today. These are many possibilites and maybe land bural and death records are available to answer the questions. Could the age at death of Henry Culbert in the mortality census be incorrect and he is the father of the Henry Culbert in the census? This would support an oral family history that Henry had a brother Austin and was the son of Henry Culbert a white man.

Hello, This is what I have on the source of the Culbert surname in my family. The earliest records are the 1880 Census and 1880 Mortaliy Census for Ward 11 (10?), Natchitoches, Louisiana. The Census year ended May 31, 1880 and was taken on June 22, 1880 and was not to included persons who died before June 1. The census lists Henry Culbert a 40 year old black male laborer with no relationship listed and 4 sons and a daughter listed. The Mortality Census for Ward 11(?) lists Henry Culbert a 45 year old married white male laborer born in Alabama (as were his parents) who died in April 1880. Elnora Culbert a 22 year old white housekeeper was burned to death in October of 1879 is also listed. We need to find the records of the death and burial of these two individuals. Were there 2 Henry Culberts or did the Census taken list Henry Culbert who had died as black because there were only black individuals in the household? Do any of the Alabama Culberts have missing Henry Culbert?

Hello!

I myself am an African-American Culbert, and I am currently a university student in Los Angeles, CA. I am from southern California, and I do not know much about my father's side of the family. My father was born in Los Angeles, and most of his siblings have settled here, along with his mother (my grandmother) and his father (my late grandfather). I believe that we still have living relatives in Louisiana, but I am not sure where they are currently residing, or if they were affected by Hurricane Katrina. My father married my mother, a member of the Tynes family (from the Richmond, Virgina area).

My parents told me that they had run into African-American Barbadians named Tynes while they were on their honeymoon, in Barbados, but never any Culberts. Do you know of any Culberts living in the Caribbean?
I am trying to find information about a Henry Culbert as well. He was born on 11 July 1879 in Balleighan, County Donegal, Ireland, and is believed to have emigrated Ireland to Pennsylvania (most likely), New York, Chicago or Canada.

Coon,

I've cleaned this up a little bit to make it clearer. Remember, verify, verify, verify. This is just a rough/quick look through some records and can not be taken as facts.

John Culbert b. ca 1807 Modreeny Parish, County Tipperary, Ireland married Mary Ward b. ca. 1811 Modreeny Parish, County Tipperary, Ireland

Children:
1. William Culbert b. ca 1826/1827 married Margaret ?
2. Robert Culbert b. Dec 1828 in Modreeny
3. Eliza Culbert b. ca 1830 in Modreeny m. Richard Dagg
a. Robert
b. James
4. Mary Jane b. ca 1832 in Modreeny m. William Hodgins
5. Henry b. ca 1838 in Ontario m. Margaret Wall daughter of Moses Wall and Ellen Greene.
a. John Silas Culbert m. Elizabeth Needham
b. Joseph Henry Culbert
c. William Edward Culbert
d. Mary Marilla Culbert m. James Needham
e. Thomas Ezra Culbert m. Sarah Ann Berry
f. Ellen Rebecca Culbert
6. Possibly John Culbert Jr.

These people are somehow related, though I doubt they are children of John and Mary. More likely that they are grandchildren or some other relation. It is possible that they are the children of John and Mary, however this would have made Mary between the ages of 33-47. Here's the problem, the earlier dates seem the least reliable. It looks like someone was fudging the dates in order to force them to fit as John and Mary's children. If the early dates are true, then it is very possible they are the children of John and Mary, but if the latter dates are true, it is unlikely that they are the children of John and Mary. The latter dates are from various census records.:
1. Thomas b. ca 1845/1858 (possible but unlikely)
2. Mary Anne b. ca1857
3. William b. ca 1841 (possibly, but unlikely)
4. Joseph b. ca 1848/1850 (possibly)
5. Richard b. ca 1851/1853
6. Rebecca b. ca 1843 (possibly)

James Culbert and Rachel Porte/Portis. According to some sources whose reliability is unknown, James Culbert was born around 1820/1821 in Modreeny. This makes it likely that he is related to John Culbert, but is not his child, since Mary Ward Culbert would have only been 9 years old at the birth of James, and John would have only been 13 years old. Possibly brother or cousins.

Thomas Culbert and Jane Martin. According to some sources, whose reliability is unknown, Thomas was born 20 March 1804 in Belfast. This makes him about the right age to be John Culbert's brother, but if he really was born in Belfast this is highly unlikely to be the case.

Re: culbert family
Dear Coon,

Thank you very much for your response. Your family is not connected to ours, that I know of (although if we go back far enough, who knows?). Our Henry, son of Margaret, was born in 1879 in Ireland, which was four years after your Ellen, and therefore can not possibly be her father. New research indicates that our Henry who was born in 1879 in County Donegal Ireland, probably died there unmarried and without children.

However, I think I can assist you a little. First, there is a notable Culbert family in Huron, Ontario that descends from James Culbert and Rebecca Porte. Henry can not be their son (their son, Henry, was born 1857), but possibly a brother to James or some other relation.

Secondly, there is a marriage record on file for Henry Culbert who married Margaret Wall on 23 Jan 1862, both at the age of 24, in Bruce County, Ontario. This certainly seems to be your Henry and Margaret Culbert. Furthermore, the marriage record shows the parents of Henry as being John and Mary Culbert and the parents of Margaret as being Moses and Ellen Wall. From the date of the marriage and their age, we can estimate that both Henry and Margaret were born around 1838.

Following this information - In the Canadian 1881 census in Huron, Bruce County, Ontario:

Henry Culbert Married, male, Irish ETHNICITY (do not confuse this with being his nationality), Age 44 (thus born around 1837), Born in Ireland, Farmer, Church of England.
Margaret Culbert married, female, Irish ethnicity, Age 40, born in Ontario, Church of England.
John Silas Culbert, male, irish, 15, Ontario, CoE.
Joseph Henry Culbert, male, irish, 16, Ontario, CoE.
William E. Culbert, male, irish, 14, Ontario, CoE.
Mary M. Culbert, female irish, 11, Ontario, CoE.
Thomas E. Culbert, male, irish, 9, Ontario, CoE.
ELLEN REBECCA, female, irish, 6, Ontario, CoE. <-- here is your Ellen Rebecca Culbert.

There is also in Huron, Bruce County in 1881 census:
Moses Walls, married, Male, Irish, 70, born in Ireland, farmer, CoE.
Ellen Walls, married, female, Irish, 70, bornin Ireland, farmer, CoE.

AND, on top of this, there is a marriage record in Modreeny, Tipperary, Ireland for Moses Wall who married Ellen Greene in July 1831.

AND, there is a record for John Culbert and his wife, Mary Ward, living in Modreeny Parish, County Tipperary, Ireland, on 27 Dec 1828 their son, Robert Culbert, was christened at the Burntwood Church there. According to an unknown source (and therefore unreliable) this John Culbert was born between 1802-1808 and married Mary Ward at about 1828 (this is probably a guess based on the idea that their oldest known child was christened in 1828). There is also some indication that this John and Mary Ward Culbert immigrated to Biddulph, and that this MAY be them:

1881 Canadian Census, Biddulph:
John Culbert, married, male, irish, 74, born in Ireland, farmer, CoE.
Mary Culbert, married, female, irish, 70, born in Ireland, CoE
Richard Culbert, married, male, irish, 28, born in Ontario, Farmer, CoE
Jane Culbert, married (probably Richard's wife), irish, 22, born in Ontario, CoE.
Mary Ann Culbert, single, irish, 23, born in Ontario, CoE.
Huldia M. Culbert, female, irish, 2 months old, born in Ontario, CoE.
William Dobbs, male, irish, 60, born in Ireland, Retired Farmer, CoE.
(The ages indicate that this Robert was not their son, but possibly a grandson. It is very unusual for women to give birth after the age of 40.)

The LDS has listed as the children of John Culbert and Mary Ward the following (unreliable):
Robert Culbert b. 1828 County Tipperary
Henry Culbert b. 1838 Carleton, Ontario (this is your Henry)
William Culbert b. 1841 Biddulph
Rebecca Culbert b. 1843 Biddulph
Thomas Culbert b. 1845 Biddulph
Joseph Culbert b. 1848 Biddulph
Richard Culbert b. 1851 Biddulph
Mary Anne Culbert b. 1857 Biddulph
(Obviously there is room here for Eliza who was born 1829/1830 and James who was born around 1821-1823).

There is a record of Thomas Culbert, 23, of Biddulph son of John and Mary Culbert, marrying Letitia Dempster, 24, of Adelaide, daughter of Robert and Eliza Dempster. Witnesses: Joseph Culbert of Biddulph and Elizabeth Dempster of Adelaide on 06 Dec 1870 in Biddulph.

Also: Joseph Culbert, 26, farmer, born in Biddulph, son of John and Mary Culbert married Elizabeth Dempster, 26, born in Adelaide, daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Dempster. Witnesses: James DAGG (this is the son of Richard Dagg and Eliza Culbert) and Mary Ann Culbert, both of Lucan. Marriage: 26 Sept 1876 in Adelaide. (This indicates a connection between John and Mary Culbert and Eliza Culbert Dagg.)

There is also a record for another John Culbert and his wife, Honor Whelan living in Modreeny Parish, County Tipperary, Ireland on 03 July 1831 as their son John Culbert Jr., was christened in Lougham Church there. There is also a marriage record for this John Culbert (Sr.) marrying Honor Whelan on 03 March 1829 in the same church. Also according to this marriage record he was born about 1805.

Other things that may be helpful:
There is a marriage record for Henry and Margaret's son, William Edward Culbert, age 28, farmder born Huron twp, son of Henry and Margaret Culbert married Rachel Harris, 23, born in Kinloss, daughter of Henry and Mary Harris. Witness James Harris (prob. brother of Rachel) and Nellie Culbert (prob. sister of William) both of Holyrood, on 04 March 1896 (marriage date) in Holyrood (marriage place).

Another marriage record for their other son:
Thomas Ezra Culbert, 34, farmer, born in Huron twp in Bruce County, son of Henry Culbert and Mary Wall (or Watt), married to Sarah Ann Berry, 32, born in Brant, daughter of Henry Berry and Elizabeth Tanner. Witness: Robert Patterson of Bentinch and Fanny Berry of Brant, on 01 Nove 1905 in Brant twp.

Another of Henry and Margaret's children marriage record:
Jas. (James) Needham, 29, yeoman, born Kincardine, son of Samuel and Mary Needham, married Mary Marilla Culbert, 21, born in Huron twp, daughter of Henry and Margaret Culbert. Witnesses: Joseph H. Culbert of Huron and Annie M. Collins of Kincardine. Marriage: 29 January 1890 at the residence of the bride's father.

And Another:
John Silas Culbert, 25, farmer, born in Huron twp, son of Henry and Margaret Culbert, married Elizabeth Needham, 25, born in Kincardine twp, daughter of Samuel and Mary Needham. Witnesses: Joseph Culbert of Huron twp and Isabella Needham of Kincardine twp. Marriage 11 April 1888 at St. John's Church, Bervie.

Another marriage record in Bruce County:
Samuel Culbert, 24, born in Ashfield, son of Thomas Culbert and Jane Martin, to Rachel McLeod, 19, Huron Twp in Lucknow Co., daughter of Murdoch McLeod and Ann Buchannan, witness WH Revitt and Ellen Revitt, on March 1887 in Lucknow. (It is interesting to note here, that James Culbert and Rebecca Porte lived in Ashfield, Huron County. And this further indicates that there may be some sort of link between Henry, James and Thomas.)

According to a birth record Samuel Culbert son of Thomas Culbert and Jane Martin was born 10 March 1862 in Ashfield, Huron County, Ontario.

According to a family tree found in the LDS database (and thus not terribly reliable), Thomas Culbert who married Jane Martin was born 20 March 1804 in Ireland. According to another tree, Thomas Culbert who married Jane Martin was born 1821 in Belfast. (Census records has his birth year as being anything between 1804 to 1824. The census is notorious as getting ages wrong more than any other information.)

Another child of Thomas and Jane Martin Culbert: Abraham Culbert b. 02 Sep 1857 in Ashfield.
Also James Culbert son of Thomas and Jane Martin Culbert, born 20 Jan 1846 in Ireland. Indicating that Thomas and Jane Martin Culbert immigrated sometime between 1846 and 1857.

This family tree of Thomas Culbert and Jane Martin seems very well documented. And it does appear that this family moves to Lucknow, Bruce County, Ontario, where Henry Culbert and Margaret Wall (Watt) are living.

There is also a marriage record for an Eliza Culbert b. around 1829 in Tipperary, Ireland, who married Richard Dagg 21 March 1848 in Bruce County, Ontario. (Note that James Culbert born around 1824 and Rebecca Porte are also from Tipperary.) Richard Dagg was living in Biddulph and Eliza was living in Kincardine at the time. Richard was born 1818 also in Tipperary. (It is also interesting to note the James and Rebecca Poris Culbert, as well as Richard and Eliza Culbert Dagg were not only all from County Tipperary, but also from the same parish of Modreeny.)

This marriage record seems to back up the claim a little bit:
Robert Wellington Dagg, 38, born in Rudolph Twp of Kincardine, Laborer, son of Richard Dagg and Eliza Culbert, married Annie McLeod, 34, born in Ripley, daughter of Donald and Katherine McLeod. Witnesses: William Wall of Kincardine and Annie McLeod of Ripley. Marriage: 23 February 1903 at Ripley. (This makes it compelling that Eliza Culbert Dagg *may be* the sister of Henry Culbert and/or James Culbert - notice the names: McLeod, Wall, Culbert.)

Also: James Dagg, 38, carpenter in Biddulph twp in Kincardine son of Richard Dagg and Eliza Culbert married Sarah Ann Langstaff on 14 March 1900 at Clinton in Huron County. (Back and forth between Bruce county and Huron County).

This is also very interesting - On 12 May 1866 in Kincardine twp, Thomas Cenguingard(?), 27, born in England and currently living in the US, married Flore Mathieson, 22, born in Cape Breton and living in Kincardine twp, daughter of Murdoch and Ann Mathieson. Witness: JOHN CULBERT JR of Kincardine. (It is possible that this John Culbert Jr. is brother to Henry, who claims his father's name was John on his marriage record, and who is about the right age to be John Jr.'s brother.)

and this is compelling: 1851 Canadian census, Biddulph, Bruce County:
William Culbert, Farmer, born in Ireland, CoE, 25, male, married.
Margaret Culbert, born in Ireland, CoE, 20, female, married.
(There is an unreliable source that says this William Culbert was born around 1827 in Modreeny Parish, County Tipperary.)
There is also this marriage record, which is... interesting:
William Culbert, 34, widower, farmer, born in Ireland living in Biddulph, son of William and Margaret Culbert, married Ann Simpson, 27, Huntly PQ, McGillivray, daughter of William and Catharine Simpson. Witness: bride's parents both of McGillivray. Marriage: 25 Dec 1872 Trinity Church, Ailsa Craig.

Also (unreliable) Mary Jane Culbert b. 1832 married William Hodgins around 1855 in Bruce County, Ontario.

More about James Culbert and Rebecca Portis - according to various sources (unknown reliability) James and Rebecca emigrated from County Tipperary in 1864. There is a marriage record for them in Modreeny Parish, Tipperary, Ireland for 01 Apr 1839 (Rebeeca Porte). According to Karen Snow (unknown reliability) Thomas Culbert and Jane Martin emigrated from Belfast, Country Antrim, Ireland sometime between 1845 and 1848. Furthermore, she says that this Thomas Culbert was the son of Thomas Culbert and Jane Neill.

The following Culberts are listed in the index of a book called "Toils, Tears, Triumph - History of Kincardine Township" (Kincardine is in Bruce County, Ontario) - David, Duane, Edith, Edna, Eliza, Elizabeth, Glen, Jane, Joan, John, Joseph, Lilly, Madeline, Mary, Nancy, Roy and William. These names appear to be a combination of Thomas and Jane Martin's children, as well as Henry and Margaret Wall's children.

From all of this, it LOOKS as though James Culbert who married Rebecca Portis, Eliza Culbert who married Robert Dagg, Henry Culbert who married Margaret Wall, William Culbert who married an unknown Margaret, and John Culbert Jr., appear to be related somehow. They are all from Modreeny Parish, County Tipperary, Ireland, they all emigrated from there around the same time, they were all born around the same time and they all arrived at the same destination. But you will need to do more research to be certain. As to whether or not Thomas Culbert who married Jane Martin is connected... it seems unlikely, though there is always a possibility. You would need to research this more as well.

I can't stress this enough - DO NOT TAKE THIS AS FACT. Just use this as a starting point for your research, as an indication of where you can look for the facts. But do not take them as facts themselves. You need to verify. I hope it helps.
Thanks Jim. I have lots of information on the ancestors in our Culbert line that I'm glad to share, the web sites never seem to list that line at all. These Culberts all came from Belfast and arrived here around 1928, settling in Wisconsin in the Milwaukee area. I found a posted inquiry from Kathleen a few years ago, but it was posted several years before I saw it and my responses went unanswered. I wish I had more time to dedicate to the task, but . . . .
Appreciate your interest.
If you like, you can email me direct at nbarton@wi.rr.com
Thanks,

Red Lake, is that up around Swastika? I understand that there were some Culberts, my grandfather and grandmother (nee Gibbons) who lived up and around Swastika a very, very, long time ago. I think they settled there around the time my grandmother, Edna Mae married a man who was quite a lady's man. She was between the ages of 18 and 20 at the time. They left Swastika and to the best of my knowledge her husband deserted her leaving a few kids behind. Edna eventually moved to Calgary.

Hi Bonnie,
I just picked up this thread by chance. Myself and another Culbert are also trying to establish the link between Wm J Culbert and Wm Culbert. Regarding William J Culbert and Anne Loughran (Lockhart):
You list 4 children from 1866 to 1877 - according to records these were all raised as Church of Ireland - I have been lead to believe by another contact that they also had a daughter Jane c.1869?
I have records for 4 elder children Mary 1854, Mary Ann 1855, Francis 1858 and Catherine 1865. All of these were baptised as Roman Catholics in Shankill Parish.
It would appear that as you suggest William c1868 was an additional son - the 1901 census indicates that he and his family were Methodists.
Since your last post in 2007 has any other information come to light?

Regards
Graeme

Re: CULBERT Lurgan, CountY Armagh

Hi,
Someone else is also looking for this Caroline and I sent her an email about your posting. Some years ago I contracted UHF to research my Culberts. At the time I I only had my grandfather's name to go by and the information they provided me was for a different line of Culbert but the document proved to be useful after I got the right names provided my a private researcher. Not only was LDS usefull, I was able to find living relatives for Culbert and Mckinnon using the Genes Connected website.

So here's some information to pass along. The print out shows a Caroline Culbert - father William mother Ellen - age 20 converted on 2 December 1898 to Roman Catholicism. Her parents were William & Ellen Jane Culbert and shows them residing at 44 Castle Lane, Lurgan in the 1901 Census. Note: I don't know where UHF found this information.

Ellen's maiden name was Lynass which would not match up to your William J. Culbert.

Here's the census info UHF lists on William J. Culbert during these dates:

1877 - 30 Castle Ln. left in 1882

1893 - 38 Castle Ln.

Below UHF lists a William and /or Wm. Culbert residing at various Castle Lanes:

1901 75 Castle Ln. but also a Wm living at 44 Castle Ln.

1905 14 Castle Ln.

1906 39 Castle Ln.

1908 10 Castle Ln.

1908 49 Castle Ln. until 1924

UHF suggests that William J. Culbert is the father of William Culbert.

William J. Culbert and Ann Loughran's children:

Births - Lurgan No. 1 District

7 June 1866 Mays Ct John - infomant mother
28 Sept 1871 Mays Ct James - informant Cath. Loughran
25 July 1874 Castle Ln Elizabeth - informant Anne Wells
17 Feb 1877 Castle Ln "female no name listed" (could this be Caroline?) - informant Jane Hughes

So, it appears that the latter William J. Culbert would fit your Caroline better than the first William. It's hard to tell. I do have more on the Griffiths Valuation if you want that too.

Not sure if this helps or adds more confusion. :)

Cheers
Bonnie

Trying to trace the birth of Caroline Culbert. She married a John Thompson on 5 December 1898 in Lurgan. Both her marriage Certificate and the 1901 census would indicate she was born in 1878.
Her father's name is William J Culbert.
Have searched the GRONI records between 1868 & 1881 but with no luck.
