My great Grandfather was Jeremiah culhane who immigraged to the Manhattan, NY abt 1870. All I know is that he married Mary Collins in Manhattan in 1872. According to the marriage record his father was James Culhane and mother was Bridget Sheehan. Did you ever find out any more information. Another tree on ancestry listed Jeremiah's birth place as Glin, Ireland but I have not been able to verify.

My great great grandfather was Michael Garret Culhane born about 1844 in county limerick He came to the US around 1865 to Boston. His father was Garret Culhane and mother was Mary (Downes). Can't believe Garret is too popular a name so I suspect there is a connection someplace. I do not think Garret and Mary came to US
Garret or Garrett Culhane

Hi List,
I'm hoping to find information about, or descendants of Garret or Garrett Culhane. I believe he was born in or near Rathkeale, Limerick Ireland, I suspect circa 1780. He was a teacher in Rathkeale and according to my great great grandfather John Conway Bourke who was born circa 1815 at Rathkeale, Garret Culhane served with the British forces in the Napoleonic Wars. I know this isn't much to go on, however I though I'd give it a shot. Regards Peter Dowling

Continued from previous message.

Source: Kurtz, Harriet and Beverly Schwing co-editors. Our Lady of Good Counsel 1879-1979, Elkton, South Dakota. Watertown Public Opinion Print: Watertown, SD; 1981. pgs. 108-110.

Patrick and Margaret (MCCARTHY) Culhane - Patrick was born July 16, 1880, to John and Mary Culhane at Fountain, Minnesota. At three months of age, he came with his family to homestead west of Elkton. He married Margaret (Maggie) MCCARTHY, the daughter of Thomas and Mary McCarthy, November 7, 1910, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church. Rt. Rev. Msgr. George Sheehan performed the ceremony. Pat and Maggie farmed near Aurora for two years and later moved to the John Culhane farm five miles west of Elkton. They moved to Elkton in 1921, and Pat operated a garage for many years. They lived at 501 South Elk Street until their deaths, Patrick's on August 12, 1936, and Margaret's on September 23, 1971.
Pat and Maggie had six children: Mary married F.A. Seivert; William married Gertrude SANDVIG; Margaret Ann, was born September 16, 1917, and died January 10, 1923; Patrick J. married LaVon LANGE; Thomas James is deceased; Ellen lives in Edina, Minnesota, with her husband, John Dougherty.

Patrick J. and LaVon (LANGE) Culhane - Pat is the son of Patrick and Margaret (MCCARTHY) Culhane. LaVon is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lange. Pat and LaVon were married November 25, 1946, in Our Lady of Good Counsel Church by Rev. Frank Sieh. They have lived in Elkton their entire lives.
Pat has been self-employed for many years. Since his return from the European theater of war, he has been a trucker. LaVon has been employed at the Corn Exchange Bank for many years.
Pat, Jr. married Betty KRUGER in 1967, and after spending two years in Germany in the Armed Forces they returned to South Dakota. Pat is a Highway Patrolman out of Clear Lake, and Betty is associated with the Deuel County Bank. They have a son, Patrick, age nine and a daughter, Mary, age seven. Rebecca is a resident of Sioux Falls where she has been a dental assistant the past seven years in the office of Dr. Kocan. Ruth Ann has been a secretary at Sturdevant's in Sioux Falls for the past five years. Mary Jo is a junior at SDSU and is majoring in special education. She is a member of the SDSU marching band. Jeannie is at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls where she works in Records and Data. He was named after his grandfather, Roger Culhane, who was born about 1800. Roger moved with his family to Lanesboro, Minnesota, as a young boy. In 1877 he married Katherine MCCORMICK of Chatfield, Minnesota. Katherine was born in England of an Irish father and an English mother.
Roger came in 1878 from Chatfield to construct a hut dwelling and do some breaking on a homestead five miles west of Elkton. He returned by wagon for his family, according to a report of his daughter, Elizabeth. She was only one year old when the family came to the homestead in 1879. Lizzie remembered her father driving the wagon to Marshall for lumber for their first home. Many times he drove a wagonload of wheat to be ground into flour at Marshall. She recalled fierce blizzards-- one time snowdrifts eight feet high encircled their home. Aurora was the family shopping center. They would drive crosswise over the land since there were no fences or boundaries. Lizzie particularly recalled a red-letter day when she was twelve years old, and they attended a horse racing celebration in Flandreau.
Katherine was struck by lightning and died January 27, 1887, when baby Michael was just twenty days old. She was about thirty-three years old when she died. She and Roger had seven children: Mary Elizabeth, born about 1878, married John Kinney; Katharine married William Chrystal; Daniel died in infancy; John R. was born March 2, 1884, and married Bertha WILTS; Michael, born January 7, 1887, married Loretta CASEY; Patrick drowned at fourteen; and another son died at sixteen years of age.
Roger advertised for a housekeeper, then married Elizabeth (Libby) CANNICK of Rochester, New York. Their son, Thomas Augustine, was born May 24, 1889. (Some family records indicate Roger married a Libby MCCLOUKEN from Chicago, but there is some confusion over whether this is another woman, or conflicting information on the same woman). Roger and Libby moved to Elkton in 1917, and Roger continued to live here after Libby died December 21, 1919. Libby, born in Prince Edward Island, lived to be seventy-two years old. Roger died April 16, 1933, at eight-two years of age, grandfather of thirty-three.

William C. and Frances (FARGEN) Culhane - William C. was a son of William George and Catherine (CASEY) Culhane. He taught school at White, South Dakota. William married Frances Fargen who taught at Flandreau, South Dakota.
They had seven children, the youngest just three weeks old when Frances died.
William worked in the post office at Marshall, Minnesota.

William and Gertrude (SANDVIG)Culhane - William Culhane, son of Patrick and Margaret (MCCARTHY) Culhane, married Gertrude SANDVIG at Corvallis, Oregon. After two and one half years in the Army, the Culhanes moved to Omaha, where Mr. Culhane was associated with Mobil Oil Company as a bookkeeper. He retired in 1977 after thirty-five years with the company. Bill died in 1981.
Mrs. Culhane was teacher and principal of the Elkton High School for many years. They are the parents of five children.
William, Jr. married Bonnie CASEY in 1966. They have four sons, and one daughter: Mike, Billy, Tommy, Katie, and Kevin James who died at birth. I may also have a pic of Rebecca's headstone in cemetery on the Indian reservation. Would love to get all your family info to include in family history I'm writing (2nd book to be published) and have been in contact with other Sunstrums across Canada. You may contact me directly at marguerite.oconnell@yahoo.ca but please mark your email as "Sunstrum history" so I know to open it.

Do you know where I can get a copy of this book Thomas f. culhane wrote. I keep hearing about it, but nobody has written anything that it entails. In Sherman Roots reference page, it mentions that Thomas culhane and Ellen O'Shaughnessy, are listed in this book.

I'm looking for info on the family of John Thomas Culhane (1812 Ireland-1888 Michigan), known as Thomas and married to Ellen O'Shaughnessy (1822 Ireland - 1907 Ludington, Mason, County, MI).Went to canada before 1852, and to Michigan between 1871 (census of Hasting County, Ontario)-1880. 1880 census has Thomas and Ellen in Lincoln, Isabella County, Michigan with children John, Michael, and Ellen (Nellie). James was in Huron County, MI with wife Rachel and Thomas had died 1 1/2 months after his marriage to Elizabeth Wilfong in October of 1874, in a boiler explosion, in Huron County, MI. Thomas's Children as far as I can tell are:
James 1844 Ireland married Rachel/Leah Wilfong
Thomas 1848 Ireland married Elizabeth Wilfong
Mary 1849 Ireland m. unknown
John 1852 Hasting County, Ontario, Canada m. unknown
Michael 1854 Marrysville, Ontario, Canada m. unknown
elizabeth/eliza 1863 canada m. unknown
Nellie 1857 Canada m. unknown

Any info would be great.
Thanks
Michelle (Culhane) Beesley

I definitely have Lynches and a Bridget Culhane in my family tree. Some of the info in here might be a bit off, but here's the link: http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/10933998/family?fpid=-5554202.... I have since figured out that the Nora I thought was Nora Culhane was really Nora Doherty (her mother was a Culhane and I believe her mother married a Culhane after her first husband died). I've found records of Nora having several siblings with the last name Culhane (including a Bridget).

Hello! I'm not sure if that's the same Patrick, but Honora (Nora's full name) has a brother or step brother named Patrick that was born in 1879 I think. I know most off Nora's family settled in Rochester, NY, but Patrick may have settled elsewhere. If you send me your email address I can invite you to view my family tree so your wife can see if anything looks familiar.

Does she know anything about her Aunt Nora that would give more clues?

James died in 1899 and Nora remarried in 1907 or so. She had another daughter (Fran) 7 years later with her husband Frank Owens.

If anyone has any information about Nora and her family, please let me know. Thanks!

I tried to find your family tree but had a tough time navigating and finding anything on that site.

My great grandmother's name was Nora Culhane. She was born 1868 or 1869 in Ireland and had a sister Maragret and brother Patrick. She settled in Rochester, NY after arriving in 1885. She married James Henry Cullen, had two children Marie (1895) and James Joseph (1897), and then remarried Frank Owens in 1907-ish after James died in 1899. She had another child with Frank - Francis (1913-ish). Please let me know if this sounds like Nora is part of your Culhane family. Thanks!

Megan, I am the grand-daughter of Nora Culhane of Glin who came through Ellis Island in 1895. I know very little except that she had a brother named Daniel who had a glass eye. Nora married John McMahon in Pittsburgh and had 5 children. My mother was her youngest surviving child. A distant cousin in Pittsburgh has done extensive research on the family tree. I can put you in touch with him.

There's a good chance that your grandfather is related to my branch of the Culhanes in Rockford. The patriarch of the family was Andrew Culhane and his wife Margaret Bevan (s) or Bevin(s). They had two sons -- T.H. Culhane and Andrew B. Culhane and four or five daughters. I am descended from the sister Julia Culhane. I believe T.H. Culhane had a son they called Jack. I do not know much about Andrew's family or descendants. Most of the Culhanes are buried in St. James cemetary in Rockford. Andrew migrated from Ireland around 1857 as did Margaret his wife. You can find them on the U.S. census reports of 1890 and 1900.
