Hi,
I am also descended from James and Sarah, through their daughter Frances, who was my great grandmother. So, your wife and I are cousins.
I am very interested in your arrival date of James Bingham from Cork. He would have been born around 1808. So I wonder if that is our James Bingham, or perhaps his father. Could have been him, I suppose. Where did you ever find that arrival information?
I would be happy to send you everything I have, either as a GEDCOM file or as a Word document, if you send me your email address. Mine is sdevogel@verizon.net.
Looking forward to sharing information with you!
Susan

Sarah Cullen married James Bingham (Parish register shows Jacob) My wife Catherine Bingham's great grandfather was James Bingham married to Sarah Cullen. She was born in 1826 or around that date & died August 5 1908 at the age of 82 years. I am just starting to trace my wifes' family tree any information that you can supply would be greatly appreciated. One final comment is that when searching records of arrivals in Newfoundland I came across a record of a James Bingham 24 years old the 1st of July 1832 and the ship Independance arriving from Cork

Re: Frederick CULLEN(S) of Washington Co., GA, & ancestors

I am descended from two siblings of Frederick CULLEN(S). I do not know where Frederick is buried.

The TROTMANs came from the Gates/Bertie Co, NC, area to Georgia about 1800. From Washington Co, GA, much of the family moved to Stewart Co, GA by 1840. Thomas TROTMAN I, b abt 1763 NC, was in the Rev War. He was the illegitimate s/o Susanna TROTMAN. Prob father was Blount GARRETT. Susanna TROTMAN later married to a WALTON, maybe Henry WALTON. Susanna was d/o Edward & Elizabeth WALTON TROTMAN. The wife of Thomas TROTMAN was Winnefred CULLEN(S), d/o Nathan CULLEN & Christian DOCTON—also parents of Frederick CULLEN(S). Frederick CULLEN was bondsman for the marriage of Thomas TROTMAN & Winnefred CULLEN & also applied for letters of administration on Thomas’s estate in Georgia—but the early Washington Co, GA, records were destroyed so that we don’t have any further info.

3 March 1788, Bertie Co., NC, marriage bond, Thomas TROTMAN to Winnefred CULLEN, Frederick CULLEN, surety

Letters of administration applied for by Frederick CULLEN on estate of Thomas TROTMAN, Louisville Gazette newspaper 1799-1803, issue of 12 or 19 Jan 1803, legal advertisement.

Jonathan HARRISON was in Gates Co, NC, by 1809. I have not been able to discover his first wife's name. Some people show her as Elizabeth KNOWLS, who married a John HARRISON in Pasquotank Co, NC, in 1796, but his signature does not match the signature of Jonathan HARRISON on other documents. Jonathan married (2) to the twice-widowed Rachel CULLEN HOBBS HOBBS. Jonathan was bondsman for mar of Nancy HARRISON & Edward HUNNINGS 1808 Chowan Co. Edward was from Tyrrell Co, NC. Rachel CULLEN HOBBS HOBBS HARRISON (married two HOBBS first cousins) was also probably a daughter of Nathan CULLEN & Christian DOCTON.

Bryan CULLEN was in Craven Co, NC, by 1730, maybe the Bryan CULLEN in VA 1714, prob fr Ireland or Scotland. He had two known sons, Jonathan & Edmond. He was supposed to have had an NC will, but I have been unable to find it. Jonathan’s wife was prob Jemima RUSSELL, the dau of Thomas RUSSELL. Jonathan's son Nathan was in Perquimans, Chowan, & later Bertie Co, NC, where he d 1785. Nathan m Christian DOCTON, the daughter of Jacob DOCTON & Sarah HUNTER.

Thomas DOCTON Jr. was ment in 1676 Anne Arundel Co, MD, will of Symon HOGES. He was beq land on the Nansemond River. He was, by 1699, in Nansemond Co, VA. By 1712, he was in Perquimans Co, NC, where he remained until his death in 1754. His wife was Elizabeth, maiden name unknown, who predeceased him. He had several daughters but only one son, Jacob. Jacob had only daus so that the surname of this branch died out when Jacob died in 1764. Jacob's wife was Sarah HUNTER, d/o Robert HUNTER & his presently unknown first wife. Robert, probably born in Nansemond Co, VA, was s/o William & Joane HUNTER who were immigrants. Some people say that the HUNTERs were Scottish, others that they were English.

“The first of this family,” reports John Bennett Boddie in Historic Southern Families (Vol. 7, pp. 100-104), “was William Hunter. It is not known when he first appeared in Virginia. The first public record pertaining to him is a patent dated 21 April 1695 for 200 acres ‘on the east side of the main cypress swamp that leads out to Bennett’s creek’ in the upper parish of the colony (Patent Book 8, p. 431 [rather, Virginia Patent Book 8, p. 309]. On 25 April 1702 he was granted 240 acres in the upper parish on the southeast side of the Meherrin Swamp adjoining his earlier patent for the transportation of himself, his wife, his daughter Alice, his son Nicholas, and Mary Cahon. In 1704 William Hunter appeared on the Nansemond Rent Roll with 800 acres. He was styled as ‘Capt.’ which indicates that he was probably captain in the county militia at that time. As the Nansemond records have been destroyed, there is no record of the division of the estate.”

An earlier record (Virginia Patent Book 7, p. 487) reports that Charles Rowntree (Rountree) was granted 350 acres in the upper parish of Nansemond County on 4 November 1685 for the transportation of seven persons: “Willm. Hunter, Nicho. Hunter, Joane Hunter, Rebecka Hunter, Charles Rountree, Robert Rountree, and John Sayer.”

Before 1729 William Hunter, a weaver by trade, died in the part of Nansemond County now designated as Chowan County, N. C. His will, mentioned in his son Nicholas’s legal papers, is lost. One source cites William’s daughter Alice as the wife of Job Randall. The Battle family of North Carolina claims descent from William Hunter’s daughter Sarah and William Battle.
oops, I mis-read your post, I see that you do NOT know where Frederick was buried, sorry, my mistake.

What I do know from our family stories is that we are from Ireland and a bunch of Cullens brothers came over to the US together. Of course, I'm learning that was a common story, so that may not be true, but I do believe the Ireland connection is true.

I've yet to prove Frederick's parents, do you have that information if it is the same Frederick Cullens?

Thanks for any help you can give me, Eileen

Hi Jackie
I had a contact earlier this year, asking if my Leslie Cullen was the husband of Catherine Francis, this was through genesreunited.co.uk it was from a chap named Fred Wellings (dont know if you know him?)
I have been into my messages on genesreunited and copied and pasted them for you below
Next message i have copied see below:

VIcky

Thanks for the response. This is a distant relation of mine so I don't know very much. Leslie Cullen married a Catherine Francis, so the first name ties in. I have the date of death of LC as 1992 and Catherine in 1998. It is the Francis line that I have been tracing. The Francis family originally came from Liverpool.

All this came from a tree on Ancestry, which did not respond to my queries and the tree is no longer there. The only other information on the tree was that there were 9 children to the marriage, but with no names or dates.

Does any of this tie in with what you know.

Regards

Fred

Then there was one more and then i never heard from him again.
Copied below

Vicky

Whatever you have would be welcome. It is really the descendants of the couple that I am interested in - they are the ones that are my relatives - albeit distant ones. Obviously, anything on the couple themselves would also be of interest.

Regards

Fred

Not sure if these messages will mean anything to you, but you may find out more if you search for him on genesreunited.

DOB our family
PATRICK JOSEPH CULLEN 20.08.1947
THOMAS EDWARD CULLEN 8.12.1948
PAUL WILLIAM CULLEN 20.11.1952
VICTORIA ELIZABETH LORRAINE CULLEN 13.09.1954
GEORGE ALEXANDER CULLEN 5.08.1955
JUDITH MARY CULLEN 24.12.1960
CHRISTOPHER JOHN CULLEN 5.06.1962
AMANDA JANE CULLEN 31.12.1963

If you dont mind you could do same and i can put them in my tree on genesreunited.
If you want my home email its:
holmes@liverpool167.freeserve.co.uk
Now Crumlin is a suburb of Dublin, which as far as i know is near to East Wall, East wall is sort of the dock area, not far from where the ferries come in and its not a far walk to the city centre either.
The McGauley family is the link to Dublin, but i cant remember the details.
Family links to Ireland are:
McGauley (one strand of the family use McAuley, due to a spelling mistake from years ago by the registrar but they then had to stick to it)
Stacy
Kinsella
Then it moves into married names but they are the ones i know of. My sister mandy has all this written down from when we scattered mums ashes just before Mary Green nee McGauley, passed away. I must go and get the piece of paper of her.
I downloaded a photo of you mum and dad from somebodies site on ancestry.com, gom seeing that photo of your dad brought back some memories, the one i found of your mum was in her younger days, so i couldnt really remember her from it but i can see her in my mind as though it was yesterday.
So sad to hear about your mum and her brother, isnt it amazing what you can unearth when putting the family tree together.
I have just spotted that you are in Stratford upon Avon, for some reason i still had you in ramsworth square......not sure why?
Well Jackie i'll close now, keep in touch and chat soon
Love
Vicky
I am researching Cullens from Co. Leitrim. My husband's grandmother was Margaret Cullen, daughter of John Cullen and Mary Travers, born about 1886 in County Leitrim. She was the youngest of her siblings--Mary, John, Catherine, Anne and Bessie. I can't pin down the location for the family, but Bessie's immigration records show Dromahaire, and also mention FiveMileBourne. Margaret married William Sutcliffe in Philadelphia in 1907. Bessie never married, and worked as a seamstress for the Cassatt Family in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

Cheers Vicky,
For that little bit of information, I will start looking in that area of Dublin now, before I was looking in the Crumlin city area, because that is where I was told they originated from, but I drew up a blank, so I will see if your area helps, if not I am going to have to go from area to area hoping something will come up that looks familiar.
If there is anything you would like to know on the Cullen side I will only be to happy to help.
Everything is going fine here with my lot.
My eldest son Daniel has just been offered a post in USA with promotion which he is seriously thinking about, tomorrow he flys off to India for a week with his work, so things are looking good with him.
I wish I could say the same about my youngest son, he struggles, with the hope he will be in the same league as his brother.
On Monday I am off to Liverpool to go to our Sharron's eldest daughter Rebecca's wedding, I was hoping to go to the Marine orphanage offices at the same time while I was home, but one has to write to them first before they let you look in their records, I will have to do it another time.
It is to do with my mother, I and the rest of the family only found out two months before she died that when her father died her mother put her and her brother in the seamans orphanage, it was quite a shock to us all.
There is one thing could you give me all you family's birthdays and I can fill them in on my chart, I would be ever so greatful.
Hope your family is well.
lots of love, jackie.
Could you tell me whether your grandfather was a commercial artist or an architect? Also, do you have any family photos that you might share of Walter and/or of his parents? I have been searching for photos of his mother Abon Hassan Cullen Daniels and her second husband , Walter's stepfather Dr. Melville Daniels.
