I am very interested to know where these marriages took place. I am researching a Mordecai Moon in Pennsylvania, and Virginia USA, circa 1780's.

Could you possibly have any further details on this MOON line? I would so appreciate any information.

Mordecai Moon
b abt 1784

He is listed on the 1814 Tax Roll in Tioga, PA. He was listed as being age 30. Please, does anyone know who this Mordecai Moon is connected to within the MOON line?

I would be so appreciative if anyone could help in sharing or looking up in Tioga for anything related.

YDNA indicates a strong Europe - Pennsylvania connection to the Virginia MOON line in Amherst County. (MOON Haplo group R1b1a2)

In Amherst Co.: MORDICAI (Mordecai) MOON - Bride: Mary Caty Fulcher - 9 Feb 1790

Note: Caty Fulcher’s parents were John Fulcher and Susanna George; their children were:
1 George b 1763 in AC, m Frances PENN, d 1815 Patrick Co., Va
2 Caty
3 Lucy
4 William
5 Susannah

Many thanks!
Deborah

Esther was born 1830 in Coleford, Gloucestershire, England and married an Isaac Lyddington and had four children and then married a widower Oliver Richards who had 8 children by his first wife and then they had 10 children together, making a family of 22 children. I was wondering if you have found an Esther in your family.

Kim Ricketts

Hello
Mordecai Cullis is my 5 X Grt Gr/father in a direct line. You are quite right in saying that he is the son of Richard Cullis and Mary Sturtridge, But I have good reason to believe that William Knight Cullis is not his son. According to Lanlivery parish records the children of Mordecai and Grace (Puckey)are Mary bapt 11 Oct 1749, Richard bapt 21 Apr 1752 , and William bapt 25 Dec 1754.I also have the wills of both Richard Cullis and Mary(Sturtridge) Cullis. Both of these wills state that Mary, Richard and William are their grandchildren - thence the children of Mordecai and Grace. William married Ursula Cock on 2 Dec 1777, he died in Nov.1829.For further info p.cullis@ntlworld.com

Seeking Paul Cullis

Paul,
A very old post of yours mentioned that you have a Grace Cullis in your family tree. Her parents were William Cullis and Ursula (Usilla) Cock. I was wondering if you had further detail of Grace's parents and their ancestral line. My line is from Grace Cullis / John Philp and their son William Philp, who married Mary Wendon and emigrated to Australia in 1839. I had previously made the mistake of thinking that my William Cullis was chr. 25 Dec 1754 and was quite excited to see my tree taking shape through Mordecai Cullis etc. However, I came across a post of yours yesterday which says that the 25 Dec 1754 William married Ann, which let the wind out of my sail so to speak. Any help you could provide would be well received.

Grant Westbrook

Hi Geoff,

I just found this link and I realize it's been years since you posted your inquirey. But, I've just found my link to Lanlivery and want to share with you with hopes that you'll be able to help me.

I'm only just beginning and might be completly off, but my Grandfather was Harold Samuel Cullis, his father was John Cullis born in 1850 in Lostwithel, Lanlivery, m. Dorithy Harris. John's parents were Richard, b. 1828 and Catherine, b. 1832. I believe Richard's parents were John and Loody, again from Lanlivery. I show that Richard had an older sister, Martha. I have her birth date as 1826.

From what I can find, families were large and many of the same names were used. I live in the states and have never been to Cornwall, but Lanlivery must be a tiny hamlett and I doubt it possible that these are not the same or from the same family.

My ggrandparents; John and Dorithy and I think his brothers Edward and William Henry came to the states in the 1880's to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. There are many Cullis's who lived there and all born in Cornwall and many living on the same street...Kidder St. They must have known each other or been brothers or cousins.

Please, help if you can. I'm so excited to have found your email, though I know it's years later.

Thank you so much,
Linda George Brown
(my mothers maiden name was Cullis)

This is James Chrisfield. I am the great-grandson of Sophie Raynor and Percival Chrisfield. I remain in Syracuse, NY where they settled in 1912. I am the grandson of Percy Chrisfield (1907-1975) and the son of Richard Chrisfield(1935-). My mother, Shirley Chrisfield, keeps comprehensive records of the family. I hope this helps your search.

Thanks again Paul - I appreciate your help. Would you happen to have anything on Grace's ancestral line beyond William and Ursula (sorry about bombarding you with requests).
I will try to get the original Parish entry for the marriage of William (the son of John Philp & Grace nee Cullis). He married Mary Wendon in Lanhydrock 14 May 1835. Perhaps the original might have the names of witnesses - eg John or Grace Philp, or someone with a Cullis surnname - as more evidence for William being their son.

BTW did your line stay in Cornwall or did they emigrate.

Regards, Ian Philp.

Hello Ian, Unfortunately conclusive proof is hard to find. However I had a search through some of my sources and have come up with the following. Grace Cullis - the entry in the Luxulyan Parish Records 1711 - 1799 reads; 21 January 1781 Grace daughter of William Cullis by Ursula his wife baptised.
The Bishops Transcript for the Parish of Helland states John Philp married Grace Cullis on 1 May 1802.
The Cornwall Baptism Index states In the Parish of Helland William Philp son of John Philp and Grace baptised on 5 May 1805. Taking into account thie above and the information you have from the census returns i.e. the age and birth place of Grace, and the fact that William was baptised in the same parish as where John and Grace were married I believe this is fairly conclusive.
During the course of my research I have come accross several different spellings of Luxulyan. Hope this helps a little. Cheers Paul.

Hi Paul, I followed up on the entry for Grace Philp nee Cullis on the 1861 census. I downloaded an image of the original census transcript from 1837online. In my opinion, the entry for place where born reads Luxullian which must therfore be Luxulyan rather than Lamellion. I will contact 1837online and point out what I think is an error in their transcription.
If my eyes are right, this must be the Grace Cullis in your family line. From my research, I have quite a bit of information on the children of John Philp and Grace and also some info on John and Grace.
I am also very keen to find out whether their son William Christened 5 May 1805 is my 3G grandfather born 8 Apr 1805 (and later emigrated to South Australia). Proving this connection is crucial of course to the ancestral line for John Philp that I have built.
I have a very full family tree of the Australian desendants of William Philp, the son of John & Grace (although I am still afte conclusive proof).

Regards, Ian Philp

Hi Paul, Thanks for the prompt response. Do you know who she married. I am looking at a John Philp m. Grace Cullis in 1802 - I think the marriage was in Helland. The 1841 and 1851 census for Bodmin show a John Philp an Grace. By the age given, I think this Grace would have been born around 1781, but the 1851 census says this Grace was born in Lamellion (maybe it was poorly scribed and was meant to be Luxulyan?)

Regards, Ian Philp

I am descended from William Philp who married Mary Wendon and migrated from Cornwall to australia in 1839. I had been trying to trace his ancestry back into Cornwall and found John Philp married Grace nee Cullis 1 May 1802 in Helland Cornwall. I believe that John and Grace may be William's parents. I have found five children from IGI records and another 2 from census returns:
Ann Chr. 1 May 1803, William Chr. 5 May 1805 (I believe this is my 3G grandfather - our family has his birth date as 8 Apr 1805), Richard Chr. 8 Apr 1810 but died 22 Jun 1812, Jenifer Chr. 9 Aug 1812, Richard born around 1821, and Grace born around 1824.
II believe that the Richard who survived emigrated to Canada then Erie Pennsylvania as per an entry in the Erie message board on this website.
I would be grateful if you or anyone could provide any information about Grace Philp nee Cullis and the connections shown above.
Regards, Ian Philp

Hi Joan
I'm trying to trace an Ada Cullis who married a Fred or Frederick Cullis in England about 1910. The last known address for them is 52 or 53 Ellerby St London in about 1952. They had relatives in the U.S. and they might have moved there themselves. Ada had two sisters, Sophia and Kate, living in New York state but their last name was Chrisfield. Do you have an Ada or a Fred in your tree?

Looking for relatives of Ada Cullis (nee Rayner) who married a Henry Cullis in England about 1900. The last known address is 53 Ellerby St or # 63 Chartfield Avenue London in about 1954. Ada and Henry Cullis had one son, Frederick Morton Cullis who married a Florence Winifred (?). Frederick and Florence had at least one daughter, Elizabeth who is likely married (possibly to a Sir Richard Richardson) and living in the London area. Ada had three sisters, one of which was Maria (aka May) Maria is believed to have married a Harold Taylor around 1900 and lived in London England. It is not known if Maria and Harold had children.
Ada also had a brother Benjamin who married a Minnie Cecilia Week(e)s around 1895. Benjamin and Minnie appear in the 1901 UK census in Chatham Kent. Benjamin and Minnie had four daughters, we believe. Two of the daughters were named Muriel and Gladys.
Ada's other brother, Charles Rayner, emmigrated to Canada where he married a Mary Simpson who are my grandparents. Any help appreciated, particularly with the London connections for Cullis, Taylor and Rayner.

Also, looking for relatives of Sophia and Kate Chrisfield (nee Rayner). Sophia and Kate married Chrisfield brothers, Percy and George Chrisfield from Milton Kent UK and moved to New York state in 1912.

Thank you very much.
Trevor Young
Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan
Canada

Cullis Rayner Taylor Chrisfield families

Looking for relatives of Ada Cullis (nee Rayner) who married a Henry Cullis in England about 1900. The last known address is 52 or 53 Ellerby St London in about 1952. Ada and Henry Cullis had one son, Frederick Morton Cullis who married a Florence Winifred (?). Frederick and Florence had at least one daughter, Elizabeth who is likely married and living in the London area. They also had relatives in England, Canada, and the U.S. Ada had three sisters, Maria (aka May) Sophia and Kate. Sophia and Kate married Chrisfield brothers, Percy and George from Milton Kent and moved to New York state in 1912. Maria is believed to have married a Harold Taylor around 1900 and lived in London England.
Thank you very much.
Trevor Young
Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan
Canada

Re: Joseph Cullis of Worcester

I'm looking for information on Joseph H. Cullis, b. 10/15/1858 and d. 10/6/1914. The residence information I have for him before his marriage is "Boston." After that he lived in Belmont, MA. I don't think he's the same Joseph as your fellow, but perhaps a relation?
