Frederick James CUMBER & Emily Beatrice BARRELL

Hello there,

Frederick James CUMBER (1879 - 1964) married Emily Beatrice BARRELL (1876 - 1941) on 3 September 1904 in St Saviours Church, Hoxton, London. They had 1 child that i'm aware of called Winifred CUMBER.

Emily had a sister called Lilian Mary BARRELL. Lilian's first husband William THRESHER sadly died after 4 years of marriage. Lilian later married Reginald EDRIDGE and they had a son Leslie Reginald EDRIDGE in 1914. Tragedy truck again as Lilian died the following year. Reginald was unable to look after the baby of his own, so Lilian's sisters brought him up.

I have a photo I believe is of the baby with Lilian's sisters, probably Emily and Florence and their Mother Elizabeth.

Is anyone researching this family, or have you heard of this story. Would love to find out more. Please email me.

Thanks

Sheila

Re: Cumbers Surname, Essex Co., England

Yes, I have done some extensive research on the Convers/Cumbers family of county Essex in the late 1500's through the mid 1600's. I was researching the Convers/Converse family who immigrated to Woburn, Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630. When an estate was divided among several (at least two) sons, one branch became Cumbers in another Essex parish near Navestock. The South Weald branch which I followed was Convers, and I believe this particular surname became extinct in the late 1600's. I did not pursue the Cumbers branch for long.

Hal Whitmore, Delaware, USA

Are you still researching the Cumber line? I have a William Cumber 1752 and Sarah Sparrow c1765 married in London on Aug.20,1780. The children were Sarah 1783,William 1784,Tomas 1785,George 1789,John 1791,Charles 1792 and Henry 1793. The name was changed to Comber for the children of Charles 1792 and Elizabeth Mary Ann Green c1800; they were Charles, Mary Ann, Henry, Louisa[1824]and Robert. Louisa Comber 1824 married Henry William King. I tried the link to your family web site but got nowhere. If any of these names appear in your tree please let me know. Regards and good luck.
Linda

How exciting to have a link to other chemists in Guernsey I was beginning to think that they were the only ones. My Great Grandfather was one of the last Cumber Chemists, his chemist was in St Sampsons, it is still a chemist and is called Stonelakes. We visited it in 2007 and spent a week on the island researching the Cumbers. If I can be of any assistance to you in your research please get in touch. Have you tried any of the Guernsey forums?

Hello Ann. My ARNOLD line also includes several chemists from Guernsey .. and my profesional training is also as a chemist!

Henry Joseph CUMBER (1828-1905) and my 4G uncles Adolphus (1816-1885) & Eugene John (1821-1899) ARNOLD were all chemists/ druggists in St Peter Port. Henry J's father Henry (ca 1796-ca 1845) was an apothecary/surgeon/cupper/druggist in SPP. I believe the family were Quakers. Henry Jnr's wife Julia Amelia was a sister of Julius ARNOLD's wife Eliza Perry nee DAVIS - my 3G grandparents, who emigrated to NZ in 1864. Adolphus & Eugenes' sister Eliza Cordelia ARNOLD (1810-1841) m Jean de Garis TOUZEAU (1801-1848). Both died young and their orphaned sons John Arnold (1839-1891) and James Frederick (1840-1915) TOUZEAU were also chemists who came to Queensland in the 1860s
One is the son of Marshall and Mary Jane. I will have to look into who the other is. Don't want to say something wrong.

What is your connection to this family? What other Marlboro/Richmond County familys are you interested in?

Hope this helps, Dee Leviner
Thanks for the tip on the alternate spelling; I found them for 1920 in Smithville Township of Marlboro County, SC. I can't locate them in 1930 though; do you by any chance know where they lived at that time?
Also have a question about Hiram Leviner. In my census searching for 1880, I find two Hirams in Wolf Pit Township of Richmond County, NC. One is in the household of his father Marshal Leviner with sister Mary C. and brother Perry, and is 27 years old. Interestingly he, along with his father and sister, is indicated to be married, but there is no spouse listed for either of the three. Also of interest is that Marshal is not indexed by the site I was using for my search (HeritageQuest); I stumbled across this family because he was on the same page as another Leviner.
The second one is head of his own household with wife Elizabeth and sons Maston/Irving/Marshal (John Leviner is a Boarder). This Hiram is listed as 28 years old. I take this individual to be the father of Robert Lee Leviner who is the husband of Annie Cumber.
Are these Hirams the same individual? If not, who are the parents of this second one?

Lynn Steen

CUMBERS FAMILY

My name is Ron Hamilton from Cheshire, England. I am researching the above family from South Weald, Essex. I have John Cumbers born in 1809, at South Weald, Essex. John was married to Harriet also born in South Weald, Essex, in 1814. Although I have census information that changes those places to John at Romford, Essex, and Harriet at Hutton, Essex.

Some of the family ended up in Lambeth, London. One made his way north and ended up marrying into my Skillington line in Ilkley, Yorkshire.

I would like to contact anyone who is part of, or researching this family.

Regards,
Ron.

Thank you Thomas. You did reply with the following:

Jack,

Give me several days and I will summarize what I have in Essex.

I can only talk about those I descend from. I have the name back to 1500. Do not know how far name extends beyond that. Can't recall now but seems like name Cumbers was more prominent in another county than Essex. So they might have from there to Essex. About 1600 the family name changes spelling and becomes CONVERS. Was this a new way of writing the pronunciation of CUMBERS? I don't know if all family members did or just the line I am in changed spelling. Do not know why, I suspect these ancestors were literate. In the middle and late 1600s they were known to be literate so I assume they were earlier. They were gentry but not nobility. The other side of my family from Gloucestershire were freeman and illiterate into the 1700s.

I remember seeing name Cumbers in 1800 records in an Essex record, think it was owner of a pub, so other families with name must have carried it into 1800s.

Thomas Bailey

Although, I am not sure from this message whether you intended to say more later!! However, many thanks for both messages. I am still trying to track the Cumbers down at the beginning of the 19th century. At the moment I have them in St. Giles, Cripplegate and am about to try to delve into the St. Giles Parish registers. I will let you know if I find more.

regards,

jack

Cumber.. Poplar, London .. moved to Dagenham, Essex

Hi

Re: my previous message, My E.Mail address has now changed. Have found out just a little about my Cumber Family, although not a lot. I cannot find any trace on 'The Latter Day Saints' site. I know my grandfather married a Maud Barker, not sure what year? but my late father Reginald Fredrick Cumber, and his siblings were born in Poplar, London he was born October 5 1925, he has/had?? an older brother, Tom ..(emigrated to Auckland, New Zealand in 60's) who I assume was named after his father Thomas, assuming he was born the year before my father .. 1924 .. I would guess marriage may be 1922 - 23. I'm sure G/Parents both had siblings .. but I was too young to know connection of various relatives .. Lily Poole, I recall and called aunty, (not sure what side of family she was on, but possibly fathers aunt ), was one, don't know if she h, ad children, she must of been pretty solvent I know, because I remember visiting as a child when she lived on Brighton Seafront, three storey property right opposite Brighton Pier, also had property on Isle of Wight. Also remember visiting another relative who lived in Saffron Walden, had children, late 50's I think.

Family

Thomas Cumber (not sure if there is a middle name) when moved to Dagenham, worked, as his son Tom did, at Ford Motors.
Maud Cumber (Nee Barker)
Thomas Cumber born 1923-4
Reginald Fredrick Cumber 5 Oct 1925(Father) .. married Rosemary Joy Harris .. 1945, born 1 May 1927 in Portsmouth, Hants (my dad in Navy then)

Olive Cumber born Oct/Nov/Dec 1927
Terry Cumber ?? (Cobbler/shoe repairer in Ilford, think his own business .. unmarried)

If anything rings a bell, would appreciate correspondence. Thanks in advance.

Jacqui (Nee Cumber)

Hi Nick

I'm afraid I have absolutely no knowledge of the Cumber family, just the letter that I have. My father went to Torquay when WW2 started so he would have been 9 at the time. When he died I found in his possessions a letter written by a Clare or Clara Cumber in Torquay to my Grandmother, letting her know how my father was settling in.

I'd be quite happy to scan you a copy of the letter, you can email me direct at jackie.tolfree@btinternet.com

Regards,

Jackie
Verwood, Dorset

Jack, I don't know if I ever responded to your Jan 2003 post. I just noticed while checking site.

Essex Parish Register Marriages edited by W.P.W. Phillimore Vol. I has many Convers and Comber marriages. First marriage recorded for a Convers is 1543 and for a Comber 1617.

My line appears to start with Richard Cumbers. He was born about 1500 and married some time before 1524 to a Margaret. The family were freeman of some position and were probably literate. So I assume writing their own names in wills. For his children both spellings are seen and by 1600, time of his grandchildren, the name was recorded as only as CONVERS. I assume the names CONVERS and CUMBERS may have had same pronunication in 1500s and thus two spellings. I don't know how the name COMBER fits in in pronuniciation.
