Cumberlands of Maine and New Hampshire

I am seeking information regarding the family of William Cumberland, b.a. 1815 in New Brunswick, later removed to Maine. Several of his daughters married Hickey brothers from Bangor/Orono and removed to Starks, New Hampshire. Lumber seems to be the families main(no pun intended) connection.

Does anyone know if any of this family ended up in Baltimore Maryland? My grandfather was Conrad Herman Cumberland born and raised in Baltimore. My great grandfather was John "Henry" Cumberland who married Margaret Kellner. In the later part of his life he was a detective for the railway. That is as far has I have made it into the Cumberland side of my family. Any help would be great.

Thomas F. O'Brien Vineland, NJ

My ggrandfather, Thomas Francis O'Brien is buried in either Vineland or Millville. I have a picture of his tombstone. However, there is no date of death on it as it was a military tombstone. I thougth that he died in 1921 because I have seen an obituary with that date. However, I found him in the 1930 Census living by himself. I know that his wife, Mary Elizabeth died in 1928 because I have a photo of her tombstone also. I have not been able to find anything on line to indicate his death.

He lived most of this life in Philadelphia, but his family lived in Vineland and Millville. He had a son Frank (Francis ??), daughters Regina, Lilly (Elizabeth & possibly even Sarah or Sadie. My grandmother was Elizabeth. She married John Bernard Monaghan and had several children: James, Gertrude, Mary, Ruth and Winifred.

Any assistance would be very beneficial to me as I work on this side of my family.

I have a census for 1930 on H Charles Cumberland (b 1866) and Ethel P Talley, born 1879 in VA. Her mother was Mary Shirley. their children were robert (1901), Barbara, Otter, Loranzo, and Thomas. There was also a thomas Conavor who lived with them in 1910. Is that your relative? I'll see if I can find more for you. Now I have to find out how they are related to me. :)
I'll keep looking. Have a great day.
Sandy

They had a child named J Riley Cumberland. does that ring a bell with anyone? My tree branches off from John's brother, charles, born in 1805. John was born 1804. Their father was William E Cumberland from England. Willoughby on the Wolds. I have his baptism/married docs. I have traced this back to the 1600's.
My email address is: (don't laugh) oceanmoonlite@yahoo.com. I wanted sandybeach (my name "sandy" and I love the beach) but someone had that so my little girl at the time (now she's 25) picked out this for me because I love the way the moon shines on the ocean at night. Okay, I know it's sort of cheesy but it is what it is. :) I'm so excited about this and finding others who are related. I just signed up again for Ancestry so I can disect what I have a bit further. Someone also mentioned their is a relative who lives in Laplata (10 min from my house) so I'll have to find them too. The Cumberlands I knew and my cousins now are wonderful people. I could tell you such terrific stories. My line came from Charles who was born in 1804. His family moved eventually to Dumfries, VA. I have a cousin, (2nd cousins)...JoAnn who lives there still. Tina lives in Fredericksburg, Harvey lives in Lake Anna, and cousin Flick :) (real name is William Cumberland, believe it or not) lives in Virginia (I can't remember the name of the town). All of my 1st cousins live near me here with my Aunt Betty. We also have some cousins in NC. I'll dig into the ancestors more this weekend. I was trying to get some Christmas shopping done too. I hate shopping! :( Also, I'm going to my granddaughter's birthday party tomorrow way up near Thurmont, MD. (20 min from Gettsburg). Take care and have a great weekend! Sandy

Hello Mary, I was born in Washington DC 1948 and lived in Georgetown Washington DC.

I have the Geneology of the Cumberlands from 1795-about 1865 or later. Emily Independence (Cumberland)Clingan wrote it in the 1840s according to my calculations of dates in the geneology. The 1850 census for Washington DC would have a great deal Cumberland famil names in it. They were a prolific family. If you would like a copy of this geneology I can attach it to an email. It is only about 4 pages long. My email is sutonchef@gmail.com Paul

Hi Paul - My husband (Dennis Ward) is the Cumberland cousin - He was born in 1949, also grew up in Georgetown on 37th Place, went to Holy Trinity and moved to Wheaton, MD in about 1962. When we were first married I became interested in genealogy and thought that I could start with the Cumberland family since they were from DC and I had easy access to DC records since we lived in Silver Spring, MD. I didn't know that Charles Hugh had moved to VA at that time and that was where Dennis' grandfather (Robert Russell) was born.I did a lot of research in the early years and am now trying to define the direct line on Ancestry.com with checking my data and adding source info. My direct email address is mkbward@verizon.net if you need to get hold of me with any photos, etc. Thanks, Mary

Charles Hugh Cumberland (b: 1861/1862 in DC; d: 1/22/1936 in VA). His wife was Ethel M. Talley (b: 6/28/1879 in VA; d: 1/15/1958 in VA). That's about all that I know about her except Ethel's mother was Grand Mammy Shirley - that's what my mom-in-law said that they called their grandmother. I think that Shirley was her last name - I came across a Mary Florence Talley married to a Dan Shirley??? Both Charles & Ethel are buried at Andrews/Arnon Chapel Cemetery in Fairfax, VA. Their son Robert Russell Cumberland (b:10/17/1900 in VA; d: 2/03/1972 in DC). He was a DC Fireman and married Mary Emma Cumberland (b: 7/06/1901 in DC; d:2/1990in MD). Her parents were Roger Edwin Cumberland (b:1/29/1875 in DC; d: 12/1957 in VA) and his wife was Mary Elizabeth Kelly (b: 6/1877 in Pittsburgh, PA; d: 1948 in MD).The story goes that Robert Russell at age 18 came to DC to become a fireman. He was living with his Uncle John & Aunt Mary Virginia Cumberland in the 1920 DC census. Uncle John & Aunt "Ginny" were also Mary Emma Cumberland's cousin/aunt & uncle????. I think that they are 2nd half cousins, but it's very confusing.I do have some photos of some of these people -if you would like any please send your email address to me. Mine is mkbward@verizon.net. Thanks for the quick response and help. Mary Ward

I visited the Arnon Chapel Cemetery many years ago. My husband's Grandparents were Mary Emma Cumberland (from DC) and Robert Russell Cumberland (from VA). Robert grew up near that Cemetery. Robert's parent's were Charles Hugh Cumberland (from DC)and Ethel Talley (from VA)and they are buried there along with at least 2 of their children (Ward Leigh & Elizabeth and her daughter Nancy Eager).Charles Hugh's parents were Thomas R. Cumberland (from DC)and Martha Rollings (from DC). I don't have much info on Ethel Talley's life/parents/etc.Robert & Mary Emma were 2nd half cousins. They shared a gr-grandfather(John Cumberland) but different gr-grandmothers. I do have some photos of Roger E. & Mary Kelly Cumberland, Robert Russell & Mary Emma Cumberland, Ethel Talley & Charles Hugh Cumberland and their children. Let me know if I can help anyone. Or does anyone have any photos of the older generation?

Hello Sandy, Thanks for the info. There is a cemetary (Arnon Chapel Cemetary on Walker rd) in Great Falls Va where a Cumberland grave is.

My mothers side of the family is not related to Cumberlands but I thought it a real coincidence that Cumberlands were in the same Cemetary as my Mothers family and buried very close to each other.

My Dads side of the family is where our Cumberland connection starts via my Grandmother Power. As a matter of fact my Grandmother was born at home in 1879 in Washington DC and her midwife was an Aunt from the Cumberland family.

The last recorded document I have of Cumberlands is the name of a Cumberland in the Funeral visitors book of my eldest brother who died at age 4 from spinal meningitis in 1942

She drew up the geneology back in the 1840s or 50s over one hundred years ago.

i have 4-5 generations of Cumberland ancestry and i will send it to you via email and attachment if you like Paul

I HAVE THE GENEOLOGY OF THE WILLIAM CUMBERLAND FAMILY AND IT IS ABOUT FOUR GENERATIONS LONG.

THE PROBLEM WITH THE CUMBERLAND GENEOLOGY IS THAT THE BOYS WERE NAMED AFTER FATHERS AND GRANDFATHERS AND WILLIAM CUMBERLAND AND JOHN CUMBERLAND WERE USED FOR BOY NAMES SEVERAL TIMES IN LATER GENERATIONS

I CAN SCAN AND SEND YOU A COPY OF THE GENEOLOGY IF YOU LIKE. William E Cumberland was my 4th great-grandfather from England and was born in 1755 in Willoughby on the Wolds in England. His father was John and his mother was Sarah Hubbard. I have traced our family to the 1600's. Most of our family lived in DC then moved to Dumfries, VA (Cherry Hill, VA). Alot of passed but we have cousins who live in the area (Woodbridge, Fredricksburg). We had and do have a lovely family! I will look for this book and let you know if I can find this. Let me know if you have any other info. Take care, Sandy
