Emanuel Cumbie/Cumbee/Cumby/Cumbo

I see that Simeon's parents seem to be equally divided among the researchers as Emanuel Cumby/Molly Farthing and Peter Cumby/Nancy Farthing. Is there any documentation that proves one set over the other?

I am trying to find the parents of Doctor James B Cumbey born in Halifax, VA in 1818. According to the census records from 1820-1840, only about 4 Cumby (various spellings) have a son that age. One is Simeon Cumby(who I am trying to track down now), the other is Emanuel Cumbie(hhhm... another I need more info on), Peter Cumbie, Charles Cumbe, and a Thomas Cumby. If Simeon was born in 1803 (like one census states), then he is not old enough to be the father of my Doctor James Cumby. However, if he was born in 1797, as another census states, then he could be old enough. In 1820, Simeon does have a male child in the right age bracket as Doctor James Cumby. I guess I need to know if there's more than one Simeon, if not why is there a difference on parentage?

George Cumbie

I have a copy of the newspaper that talks about the death of Della May Gibbs(Cumbie) and George Cumbie in Pittsburg, KS. The shoting took place on Aug. 29 1929. According to the paper, George Cumbie had family in Texas. The Marriage Affidavit has George going by the name of Grover C. Cumbie when he married Della. Grover(George)and Della got married in Kansas on November 2, 1927. Grover(George) Cumbie was 40 when he married Della so he must have been born in 1887. I don't know if he was born in Texas or not. If any of this sounds correct to you or your family please help me out so I can add him correctly to my family tree and let my family know more.....Thanks for the help....Lynne

George Cumbie

I am looking for any family to George Cumbie who lived in Kansas. All I know is that he married a lady named Della May Welty Gibbs(My GreatGreatgrandma). I understand that he had killed her and then shot and killed himself back in Aug. of 1929. I have no clue as to when they married. Della had 3 children from her previous marriage to Fransis meade Gibbs who died in Dec. of 1924 so she must have married George sometime after that because when Fransis Meade Gibbs died, it stated on his death certificate that he was still married to Della May Welty. I know that they were seperated at the time of the deaths, but that is all I know at this point. If there are any of George's family out there that is welling to talk about it, I would really like to have the information to add to my family story. I don't care what he did, I just want to know more about him and Della's marriage and how they met. Lynne M. Sawyer (Della's GreatGreatGranddaughter)

One last thought on the subject. Remember that long ago there was war, lost life. Things like small pox,and other's that did a great deal of damage the the population of Native,English and Scotish people. In some areas because of that, plus child birth, there was no one around in some cases to marrie unless you married into the different groups. Also, for English and other Euopean groups to hunt, mine, trap etc etc, on Native lands they had to marry into the tribe, and so there are some reasons. This happened to some tribes, not all, many Cherokee lines that I have found. For the tribe you mention I have no record but, if memory serves, they were some of the first to make contact with English in and around James Town. I will look into it and get back to you.

And yet another thought,as far as the English, and Gary can tell you,our line can be traced to England, but it gets a little thick after a while. We seem to be a mix,we came along with William of Normandy in 1051 to fight with, and defeat Harold the Saxon and his army. The name can be found in very old text from English Scotish , Norman, Norman is an other name for Norsman (Viking) who took over England,Normandy etc etc. English is the modern term but I think under the microscope you will find Sturgute the Viking war lord, and Roulf the Viking war lord to be the root of the Family.
It is a work still not finnished.

John Jordan Cumbie and Ann Buffington did have a daughter Lucinda, born Jan 30, 1843 in GA. She married Daniel Wesley Skipper in AL. John Jordan Cumbie and most of his children, including Lucinda, moved to Texas in 1871. Lucinda Cumbie Skipper died in Henderson Co, TX March 7, 1923. William L. Willis married Lucinda Louise Cumbie Dec 26 1854 in Pike Co, AL. Lucinda Louise was a daughter of James Cumbie and his second wife Elizabeth Culpepper. Lucinda Louise was born about 1838 although in census records she is listed as being born in 1840. Lucinda Louise had three brothers, William Ansel, Solomon S., and Jacob Turner, and two sisters, Nancy and Martha. James Cumbie and his first wife had at least six sons, one of them was John Jordan Cumbie. So Lucinda Louise was a half-sister of John Jordan Cumbie. According to census records, the children of William L. and Lucinda Cumbie Willis were George T, James J, Susan F, Salatha J, Robert Lee, Joseph J, and Allen J. William L. Willis served in Co A, 18th Alabama Infantry Regiment in the Civil War.

Edna Louise Hodges (1915-1997) married Myron Douglas Cumbie (1916-1981). They had one son, Douglas Lewis (or Louis) Cumbie (1944-2001).

I'm looking for information on Lucinda Cumbie who married William Willis - I believe in Pike Co, AL in 1854. I have a source that says her father was John Jordan Cumbie and mother listed as Nancy or Ann Buffington, but another source I saw said that this Lucinda died in TX in 1923. I'm not sure if this is my Lucinda because I am a descendant of Robert Lee Willis (b. 1870) who doesn't seem to ever have been in TX. Is it possible my Lucinda moved there after he reached adulthood?

I am looking for someone with knowledge of Edna. She was a first cousin to my father, Roland E. Hodges. Edna's father was Louis C. Hodges. As far as I can tell she was in the Lewisville, TX area in later years. I would appreciate any help on this.
Gerald

CUMBIE, Eliza JORDAN GIBSON of SC

I'm looking for ANY information on my great-grandmother. The only information I have is that she was born Eliza Jordan. She married Joseph Henry Gibson, who passed away in 1909. She was forced to give her 3 little girls to relatives in Rhems, S.C. I have been told that she married a Cumbie and lived in Jamestown, SC until her death. I can't even find her burial place. Please help if you can!
