My Great Grandfather Frederick William, a mariner, went to Turkey to captain the then Sultan's yacht. His father was Charles Cuming who married Mary Hingston in Plymouth 1816. Charles' father was William Cuming who married Mary ? in Totnes, Devon. Can anyone throw any light on this family?
Many thanks,
Carolyn
South Africa.

Kim:

I have a Leslie in my cousins family tree, son of a John Cuming IV.
A number of brothers also show up. Orignially from Middlesex area (Uxbridge) I got most of this information from my mother's cousin in Tucson AZ, Harry Cuming who is a local artist there.
I have no dates or places other than that. I think Harry's cousin put this together and may be able to add more if we are on the correct track.

Roger Clarke
Thornhill ON Canada

Records not kept until the late 1800's.

The national Archives of Canada has lots of info but all on microfilm. I am sure that lDS has these as well.
Check out Ancestry.com as they seem to be indexing these reels on CD and selling access to them.

Good Luck

Roger Clarke
Thronhill Ontario Canada
r.clarke2997@rogers.com

Tom:

I have no sources at all for this as it was provided to me by Harry Cumming , my mothers first cousin and I beleive he got it from his nephew.
I have tried doing some cross checking on the later names and could not even find them in the 1881 census which started to leave me with doubts. I suspect most of the names are correct but order and dates are probably not.
I can vouch for the 1890's and up since my mother's cousin has personal knowledge of those individuals.
Other than that it is probably just family rememberances and stories/legends.

Roger Clarke
Thornhill ON Canada

Roger

I found the information on your tree very interesting, however how sure are you about the 1st generation. As I have a Cuming family with similar dates and names originating in Devon England.

for Example Elias and Catherine, the Catherine I have details for married a Thomas Prout 17 april 1827 in Modbury Devon, the subcequently had 8 children.

Some of the names and dates are so similar only the locations are different. What sources have you used? I would be interested to share information.

Regards

Tom

Hi

I have quite a bit of information relating to this John Cuming and his Wife Mary Lee. She and John were cousins. I have info tracing John's line back to 1659 in Devon.

I am interested in what your connection is to the Cuming Family. I am tracing my mother's family name Cuming in Devon.

Regards

Tom

Picked up your message after having googled my father's name! My father's, Michael John Cuming, father's name was Samuel Cuming. The family came from leytonstone, in East London. I am not sure if they are of the same immediate family as the one you are asking about, though I am not sure whether you are talking about Wolverton in Birmingham, or in Buckinghamshire. I am the only one of my family still living in England (I live in Wanstead, in north east London)- the rest have moved to the West Coast (San Francisco and Sacramento). If I can help in any way then let me know.

Shena Cuming

Hello Kim...I am afraid I do not have any info on Leslie, but I thought my info might be of help. My paternal grandmother's maiden name was Cuming...her parents were Alfred and Mary (Gutterson) Cuming...both born in England in 1838. HAve no idea when they came to America but thoguht it might be the same family due to the spelling of the surname.
