Cummings in Louisiana

I am trying to get any information on a man named Velsie or Belsie Cummings, his family I am told was from South Louisiana, his mother was full blooded Cajun, spoke French fluently, I know she passed away in the early 1940's, he himself committed suicide mid to late 1940's from what I have been told. I have very limited information. I believe he traveled for a living, can not recall what he did, but if I have it right he was in and around the Goldonna, La. area in the late 1930's, maybe 1938 or so. Please help if you can.

What Happened to Harry, Charles L and Lewis Baldwin Cummings?

I am looking for information on what happened to Dr. Lewis Baldwin Cummings. I know the Genealogy going back from when he was born in Macon, GA in 1843 but not what happened to him after marrying Juliette Ricketson from Keeseville, NY on 2 Feb 1868. They were living in Clinton, Iowa when 2 of their 3 children (Everett & Charles) were born (1869 & 1873). However, by 1876 Juliette was back in Keeseville living with her father when her third child Harry was born. In the 1880 Census, Lewis was living in Baltimore and Everett (My Grandfather) is listed as being there also. Juliette died in 1887 and was buried in Keeseville. I know what happened to my Grandfather but not what happened to Lewis Baldwin Cummings or his sons Charles L Cummings and Harry Cummings. Does anyone have any information on this? I can be emailed at pwcomings1@aol.com

Re: John Cummings and Ruth, his wife

Hello Glen! Hope very much that this reaches you after so long a time. I, too, have a bible that belonged to my great-grandmother Abigail Cummings Hallowell, daughter of John Stillman Cummings and Susan Richardson. It also details the family back to Benjamin and Hannah (Carr) Cummings and just a few years back had found the little cemetery where they were all buried and restored it as it's quite off the beaten path now and gets no care. My uncle also has a copy of the Civil War poetry book that was published by Hugh Cummings about his experiences in the war. Do you have any digital images of the family bible entries? I'd be happy to send you what I have here.
Best Regards, Rich Eastman

Julius Cummings/Comings

Julius was my great-great grandfather. His son George W. Comings (my maternal great-grandfather) was the father of Mary Louise Comings who married my Grandfather (Augustus Samuel Smith) in 1905 after both of their respective spouses had passed away. My Dad (Theodore A. Smith) was their only common child.....my Dad passed away just two years ago at the "young" age of 101.

I'll start with Julius's father.........John Cummings/Comings. I have more work to do in order to find out if/when the name morphed from Cummings to Comings....I see a number of indications that this was the case.......unless census takers and others just wrtoe down "Cummings" because that's the way the name sounded.

John Cummings was born in1770 in Rynge, New Hampshire and died on April 26, 1837 in Putnam Valley, Putnam County, New York. He was married to Mercy Converse, who was born about 1774 in Rhode Island (I don't yet have a death date or more details for her).

I show Julius as being born on May 30, 1792 in Warren, Litchfied County, Connecticut to John and Mercy Converse Cummings. He is shown as having died on April 4, 1853 in Putnam Valley, Putnam County, NY.

I show Julius as being one of 13 children. His siblings were:

Abner Cummings, male (no details)
Mary Cummings, female (no details)
Matilda Cummings, female (no details)
Pardon Cummings, male (no details)
Philo Cummings, male (no details)
Mead Cummings, male (b. November 11, 1793, Warren, Conn. d. 1853 in Danby, Tompkins Cnty, NY)
Hiram Cummings, male (b. 1796, d. 1863 in New Jersey)
Laura Cummings, female (b. August 11, 1812 d. July 29, 1899 in Niagara Falls, NY)
John Cummings, male (b. 1815 d. August 27, 1884 in Peekskill, Westchester County, NY)
Lydia Cummings, female (b. 1817 d. August 20, 1890 in Illinois...she is shown as being married to William Baxter, quite likely a relative of Phebe Baxter, wife of Julius)
William Leonard Cummings, male (b. about 1795 d. 1820 in Putnam Valley, Putnam Cnty, NY...he is shown as having married Mary Mead on December 2, 1812 in Phllipstown, Putnam County, NY)
Wealthy Cummings, female (no details)

Moving on to Julius and Phebe Baxter Cummings, I show Phebe as being born on August 12, 1795 in Putnam County, NY and having died in Purnam Valley, Putnam County, NY on April 4, 1837. She and Julius are shown with 8
children:

Sarah Cummings, female (b. November 8, 1813 d. August 13, 1877....that would make Phebe just 18 years old when her first child was born)
George W. Cummings (my great-grandfather), male (born April 7, 1816, d. 1912 in NYC)
Frances Cummings, female (b. December 27, 1818 d. March 27, 1912)
Lorenzo Don Cummings, male (b. January 22, 1821 d. November 27,1902
Zalmon F Cummings, male (b. December 11, 1822 d. January 22, 1893)
Celia A. Cummings, female (b. October 20, 1825 d. March 10, 1849)
Laban Clark Cummings, male (b. Aubust 25, 1827 d. in Montana....no date shown)
Elizabeth Cummings, female (b. September 17, 1829 d. January 4, 1887)

One other observation. I went to Oak Hill Cemetery in Nyack a couple years ago and was given copies of burial records for Lorenzo and Harriet Comings (Lorenzo was the son of Zalmon Fletcher Comings) and they indicate "B" as the middle initial for Lorenzo. I'm guessing that may possibly be for Baxter.....surname of his grandmother's (Phebe) family.

John Cummings of Erie co, Ny

Good Day
Looking for info about John Cummings.
All I have been able to find about him is that he purchased land in Hamburg, Erie co, Ny (Willink, Niagara co, Ny then) from the Holland Land Company on or about 1803. A copy of a letter written to him 1805 from James Ellicott, giving him Mill Irons and Mill Stones for a mill he was building on 18 mile creek here in Hamburg Village, which was opened 1806.
According to legend he died shortly after the mill was completed and was the first person buried in the Old Village Cemetery in Hamburg.
He shows up 1810 census Hamburg (then Willink), Erie co (then Niagara Co), under the name Cummins. He and wife both age 26 to 44, and one each male and female children under age 10. Of course the census does not show where he was born.
If he was under the age 31 he would not show in the 1800 census (a minor). And there were no John Cummings 1820 census, implying he died 1811 to 1819. Again, according to legend he died 1811. No stone has been found in the cemetery.
Can someone tell me where he was born, birthdate and to whom? And his exact death date? Is there a Cummings Family genealogy, that might help? He could have been old enough (1766) to be in the Rev War, or late enough (1784) to be a child of a Rev War soldier.
There are many John Cummings, all born in the era, from Ny, Ma, Ct, Vt but nothing definitive. I have seen messages that Cummings were in Chautauqua county, Ny and Erie co, Pa in the era. Were these relatives? Brothers, cousins?
Would appreciate any help....
jim thoman

Re: Looking for info on Stephen Cummings

Hi. Do you know where he died at? Possibly you could find a cemetery listing for him, I only found one census for him in the quick I did.

Cummings 1910 Census-South Morgan Township, Dade Co, Mo.
Stephen Cummings age 31, b. Illinois, both parents born Illinois. Occupation, Machinist working in Machine Shop.
Wife Clara A. age 18, b. Missouri both parents b. Missouri
Very next entry is A.L. Cummings age 34, b. Illinois, b. parents b. Illinois.
Wife Emma, son Howard, daughter, Minnie.

Without knowing about where he died it's harder to come up with a death date.

I also have a grandfather Stephen Nichols Cummings. Born in Missouri but his father was born in Illinois. But in your search if you come across a 1930 census for Stephen Cummings, born 1882 in Missouri, with wife Nora in Township 8, Fresno, California, that's my grandfather. In my search for his census's I have found his name spelled Stoven, Steven, Stephan, and Steve. Don't give up. Do you know who his parents were? I bring my grandfather up because I was amused to see that my grandfather was about 10 entries below yours when I did my quick search.

I was also born a Cummings. Good luck.

Hi
Have just seen your message on the "Cummings" Board re Charles. My own 2 x great grandfather was a James Edward Cummings who married Emma Clark at St JOHN's Church in the Parish of Brixton in south London, England on 12 June? 1859. On the marriage Certificate James father is given as Robert Cummings a carpenter - like his son (and his following descendents). Does this tie into your own tree and may I ask where did you get the information about Charles Cummings moving to London in 1790?

I am not sure where he died. He married my grandmother in 1910 Dade County. In 1917 my grandmother had married my grandfather. I have no idea what happened to Stephen. I am trying to find out if they divorced or if he died before 1917. Can't find him listed in the Missouri Death records.

Looking for information on John Joseph Cummings who married Delia Silk in San Francisco about 1899. They had 3 children Bernard Joseph b.1899 ~ d. 1956, Ella b.1901 ~ d.1945 and Patricia Margaret b.1908 ~ d.1972. I can trace John on the 1910 Census but not on the 1920 Census and on the 1920 census his wife is listed as a widow. I cannot find a death record for him between 1910 & 1920. I would be very grateful if anyone has any information they could share.
Many thanks, Ian

Re: William Cummings

My great great grandmother, Clara Van Winkle, married William Temple Barbour first in 1846, and then married William C. Cummings. I believe that this was his second marriage as well. They lived in Jersey City and had, I believe, three children: Dudley, Blanche Adelaide (or Adalaide), and Clara E. I am descended from Blanche. Does any of this fit for you? I would love to have the information on William C. Cummings' burial if you are willing to send it.

I have a nice image of 13 men taken somewhere in the South Pacific on 6 January 1944. My father is one of the men and he was a CB in the US Navy. He was stationed in Guadalcanal, Vella LaVella, Solomon Islands and Bouganville. If you are interested I can send the image via email or snailmail.

Link Davis
Schwenksville, PA, USA

I would appreciate that Dan. You just never know. The picture of my father from the late 50's, shows him in an Airmen uniform. I think WWII might be before his time but I appreciate your time and the offer. Thank you.

Hi Charles,
Not sure if the picture you were interested in is the one from Dan or this one from me. Let me know if this is helpful. Also, you look alot like my brother, Jimmy Dean Cummings. Born 1961 in S.D. I'll send a pic someday when I get a more recent pic of him.

Christina Voss
