Hello

My third great grandparents on my maternal grandmother's side were William Cunning and Jane Gibson Wallace. They are buried in Hillside Cemetery, Hawkesbury, Ontario.

I was recently contacted by the granddaughter of Marjorie "Maggie" Cunning asking if there was a possibility we might be cousins.

I am waiting to hear further from her and would be glad to either put you in touch with her regarding her Cunnings. If you would be willing to share any information you might have regarding my GGGgrandparents, in particular anything to do with Jane, it would be much appreciated

Hello Mike,

Nice to get a reply from someone in the family!Good to meet you. It's funny the timing as well that I just started to re- research my family tree. I have just came to Kingston, Nova Scotia about 3 weeks ago to be with my boyfriend, and I am looking for family members and trying to get more info on my father Alton S.Cunning to help prove my Canadian heritage so I can apply to become a Canadian citizen here. So I have been doing some researching on here. I do know that my relatives have come from Newfoundland and of course I have heard of George and Roland in our family, although I have not met most of my Canadian family. My parents Alton and Louise use to go visit my Uncle Reg all the time when I was a kid. I have lost contact with majority of my family on that side of the world. It would be nice to discover more and connect with family members. Hope to hear back from you, and have a great day!

Susan Cunning

Our Richard Cunning was born in Delaware in 1801. He ended up in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, and then to Poweshiek County, Iowa. There has to be a link out there somewhere. He married Julian A (Nancy) Swagler who was born in Sharpsburg, Maryland in 1802. Her dad was either John or Peter Swagler.

My gg grandfather (George Cunning - b abt 1808, Ireland). I have not been able to identify any of his siblings or parents. Family story is that he probably came with his family about 1810 - to Pennsylvania. He was in York Co, PA in 1840, Beaver Co in 1850, Lawrence Co 1860, then I loose him.
George's son - John (b 1839 in PA) relocated to Colombiana, OH & is buried there. The names of George's sons were John, Hugh, Daniel, Robert & Patrick - names of the 4 brothers mentioned in your previous message. George Cunning is a brick wall for me. Is any of this information familiar to you?
I look forward to your reply - hopefully you can share something with me to 'crack' this wall.
Thanks in advance - Tese

Hi Winnie, Hope you get this. I just returned from Coleraine. Didn't find any Nowry info. I did find something on a Nowry related family, the Paul family. Mary Nowry Paul was my ggf's sister, and I found two Paul headstones that might pertain. Looked for Cunning (and, of course, Nowry), but no luck. I don't have your current email address. The old one I had didn't work. Send me an email at gnowery@rcn.com, and I will send you some info.
George

CUNNING Carl Joseph "Joe" b. New Castle, Pa to Ohio

STRUTHERS, Ohio – “Many of us spend each day searching for the true meaning of life. Joe Cunning knew the answer early on; it is more about the journey itself than where it takes you.”

Carl Joseph Cunning, or “Joe” as he preferred to be called, was the son of the late Maude and John Cunning.

He was born in New Castle, Pa. on March 3, 1920, and had five siblings.

He was preceded in death by his twin brothers, Raymond and Roy and his sister, Florence.

He leaves to cherish his memory his sisters, Evelyn and Gladys.

Joe was a charismatic and vivacious young man. He attended high school in Toronto, Ohio, where he excelled in Track and Field and Basketball, earning the nickname Joe “Swish” Cunning. After high school, Joe set out on a journey to experience life. He was an adventurous young man with dashing good looks who traveled across the country and lived life to its fullest.

After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army. Following the war he met, fell in love with, and married the beautiful Carmel Julius Cunning, his wife of 60 years.

They made a home in Campbell, Ohio and he began working in the steel industry at Cold Metal Products. Together they has three children, Pat (Maleen) Cunning, Debbie Kmetz (the late Michael) and Richard (Caliope) Cunning. Years later they were blessed with having nine grandchildren, Melissa, Brian, Tim, Kristin, Megan, Katie, Joseph, George and Nicholas.

Joe Cunning was a physically strong, warm-hearted family man who enjoyed the simple things in life. To him, material possessions did not mean much, for family was the most important thing in his life.

His children share, “He was the best father anyone could ever ask for.” Joe was at his happiest when spending time with his family, playfully teasing his wife, going for rides in the country, acting goofy to make others smile, picking berries, baking, cooking, pitching horseshoes or simply watching sports.

There was never a dull moment in Joe’s life, for he lived everyday as if it were his last. Joe was always the ‘life of the party’ wherever he went. He always looked and acted much younger than his years and even later in life could be found climbing a tree, riding one of the worlds tallest roller coasters, or dancing around in a room full of people. He could light up that room with a look, a wink of his baby blue eyes or his charming smile.

He made all those around him feel special, and always provided humor, even in the most difficult of times. He taught his family numerous life lessons by his actions, not just by his words; and was a role model and hero to his grandchildren.

He carried his family until the very last moment, when it was time for his family to carry him. They say that “Paradise is where love dwells.” Well, in an unusual way, his hospital room was his last “paradise.” There, the love he had so freely given his entire life, was returned to him. His wife, three children, their spouses and his nine grandchildren never left his side.

On his last evening, his family encircled his bed and celebrated his life and the love that Joe had given them by sharing memories and telling stories. As Joe rested peacefully, his family played his favorite songs, one of which was Frank Sinatra’s “I’ve Got the World on a String” which seemed to best reflect his life.

Joe truly “had the world on a string…sitting on a rainbow.” The greatest gift a man can have is the love of his family, and as he passed away the evening of June 16, 2011, all those he loved were there to hold his hands, tell him how much they loved him, and thank him for all the love he’d given them. “We will all miss Joe, Dad or Grandpa, but we are blessed and thankful for the years we had with him.”

While his death was devastating, his family was comforted by the fact that mere seconds after his passing, the stormy weather ended, the sun majestically broke through the clouds, and a spectacular sunset followed.

The Cunning family has entrusted the care of their loved one to the Wasko Funeral Home and will receive friends on Tuesday evening, June 21, 2011 from 5 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Wasko Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. at St. Lucy Church in Campbell, Ohio.

Visit www.waskofamily.com to view this obituary and send the Cunning family condolences.

Mahoning

This is stunning to me. Thomas Gordon Cunning is my great-grandfather. His daughter Marjorie is my grandmother. Her daughter Marion Rabena (sp?) Mitchell is my mother. She never knew where her "strange" middle name came from. Now I've discovered that it is a family name and was the key to my finding her mother's family, which had been a deadend in my research.

My mother used to write to a cousin in Canada whose name was Grace. That must be Grace Baycroft, daughter of Georgia Cunning. The pieces are fitting together.

I would be delighted to send you the information I have about my family and would be every bit as happy to see what you've got.

I am originally from Oregon and now live in Philadelphia, PA, USA. I would absolutely love to hear from you. To contact me directly, use this email address: puddinriver@sprintmail.com.

Sincerely,
Melissa Kay Elliott
I am interested in this line as John C did marry Katherine {Kate} O'Brien in Columbiana County, OH. They moved to New Buffalo, Mahoning County and had a farm with a large home on Western Reserve Road. She died in Massilon, my Aunt Frances said she was a cleaning freak. I saw some court records where they had some sort of case against her brother James B. O'Brien.
Do you have any pix of them? I would be glad to pay for a copy.
Children of Alexander and Rachel Cunning

Hi! I am fairly new to this, so please be kind. aha I will try to provide enough information without being excessive; My apologies for the somewhat lengthy thread.

A rather specific question (information below): Why was James M Cunning not listed on the 1860 U.S. Federal Census Record? Was James M Cunning really a blood relative of Alexander Cunning?

James M Cunning is my great-great-grandfather. He was born March 15, 1859 in Page County, Iowa and died November 1, 1920. Later, he was married to Lydia E Baldozier. He was Caucasian.

What is odd to me is that he was not listed on the 1860 U.S. Federal Census Record with his mother and father (who, as of now, I believe to be Alexander and Rachel Cunning) and their children.

According to the 1860 U.S. Federal Census Record, it listed "The name of every person whose usual place of abode on the first day of June, 1860, was in this family" With all their children, why would Alexander and Rachel choose to leave James M off of the 1860 Census record? If his birthday is correct, he would have already been about 1 year and 3 months. He was also the first child to be born after Alexander and Rachel wed. Was he really a child of Alexander Cunning OR Rachel Stonicher?

(After Alexander's death, Rachel married to Eli Pangburne. The 1870 U.S. Federal Census Record lists James M Cunning as the stepson to the head of the household, Eli Pangburne.)

You don't have to read this..here is more info.
Information about parents of James M Cunning: The father of James M Cunning is Alexander Cunning who is my great-great-great-grandfather. I think that he was born around 1814 in Ohio and died on December 22, 1864 in Devall's Bluff, Arkansas from disease while serving in the Civil War. He was Caucasian and he was married to Rachel Cunning in 1857. Hopefully, this is enough to go on for now.

Rachel Cunning (maiden name: Stonicher) was Alexander Cunning's wife, I believe his second wife. (I believe that Alexander Cunning had a first wife whose name was Harriet.) I think that Rachel Cunning was born September 1836 in Missouri City, Texas and died May 23, 1915 in Signal, South Dakota.

Any information whatsoever would be much appreciated!! My apologies for the long thread.
-Summer

My records show that Hugh and Catherine had 6 children named Grace, Frank H. Charles (1864), John (1862), Agatha (1859), & Mary Ellen (1858). Charles married Rachel Howell
and they had 3 children, Myrtle G, Florence C, and James Hugh who is my father. Charles and Rachel divorced and Charles married Nellie Lyons and they had 4 children, Charles (1904) who married Dorthy Coupe, Francis, Harry and John. Although they were my dads half brothers I know very little about them. I believe they lived in Bloomington Il
John married Ida Conners and they had three children Edna and Eva (1891), Viola, (1893) & Pearl (1896)
I also show show Hugh (1824) was a Wisconsin Senator and
I have a very interesting article about him from the MMilwaukee Sentinel 4/18/1862 If I could figure out a way I could send you a copy.
No one in the Cunning family that I know has immigrated to Canada. My line came from Colraine in Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Patrick's son, Hugh, married Catherine Kenna whose father immigrated from Ireland to Newfoundland in the early 1800s and then came to America in 1849 going to Port Washington, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. The Cunnings first lived in Pennsylvania and then Hugh moved to Wisconsin after he passed the bar. He was a one term senator in the Wisconsin senate, a Democrat. Then the family moved to Chicago where he practiced law. Sorry.

In particular I would like to find a primary source proving the link between father and son Hugh, ie birth certificate, will, land grant. I believe James was an UEL and would like to pass on this designation to my mother Irene who is 93
I have many Cunning relatives who live in western Canada.
Does your branch hail from eastern or western Canada?
From which sibling of James and Maria do you descend?
You can contact me at jroddy@cogeco.ca.
Bella
