Not so amazing. Many Italians traveled to South America during the fascist regime. Many packed what they could carry and headed for the coast and then boarded any boat they could get on just to get out of Italy. If the boat was headed to SA, they went there. To England, they went there. The same for any boat they could get on. They just wanted to get out from under the rule and oppression and depression they were living under.

Hi Pat,

I have not heard about a trucking firm, but I know very little about this side of hte family, at least as far back as Pittston. My understanding is that the family were salt miners in San Cataldo, and immigrated to Pittston to work in the coal mines there. The family moved to New Jersey in the 1930s - I assume there was more work there during hte Depression.

I have since found out the maiden name of my husband's grandmother since I first posted - her name was Rosaria Costa - when she married Sam (Salvatore) she changed her name to Sara. I have found ship records for her arriving in the States with a final destination of Pittston - she traveled over with her mother and brother. (This is a different reality than the story passed down in the family - that she and Sam met and were married on the ship). Their ship records have them arriving in the US about 3 years apart.

I was able to find baptismal records from San Cataldo for both Sam and Sara through the Mormon record system. They are hard to read - both in Latin, but it did give me mroe info. I found out that Sam's father was named Philip, who is the namesake for my husband and his father - it was pretty cool to find this out.

I remember trying to find out how to access Pittston records, but seemed to run into a dead end. Ideally I would like to find a marriage record for Sam and Sara, that would hopefully list in more detail their parents names, etc.

Best,
Tammy

Tammy,
Serra Di Falco is in the province of Caltanisetta near Montedoro and San Cataldo. My understanding is that most of the immigrants arriving in Pittston arriving in the first half of the 20th Century came from these three towns, Serra di Falco, Montedoro and San Cataldo. Did your Curatolos have a trucking firm? I seem to recall my grandmother talking about people with this last name having a trucks or a trucking company.
-Pat

My husband's family name is Curatilo - it was changed from Curatolo. They are originally from San Cataldo, in Sicily. His grandfather Salvatore Curatolo immigrated in 1904, arriving in NY, but settling in Pittston, PA. He married Sarah Costa. I have his immigration record. Later the family moved to New Jersey.
Hi Robin,

I am recently married and researching my husband's geneaology as well. His family name is Curatilo, and upon speaking with his relatives in New Jersey they have mentioned that they believe it was changed from Curatolo upon immigration from San Cataldo, in Sicily. My husband's grandfather used the name Samuel Curatilo, and he was married to Sarah. I do not have her maiden name handy. They are listed in the US 1920 census records under Curatilo, and first settled in Pittston, PA. I believe they immigrated in 1905 (Samuel would have been 25 at that time), and they met and married on their voyage over. They had 7 children and eventually moved to Woodbridge, NJ. If you are interested in learning more about Sam please contact me at weinert@bsci.com and we can talk further.

My husband and I are planning a trip to San Cataldo this fall.

Best wishes,
Tammy
