Thank you. We may be related. I have been told that my great-father Fernando Muñiz-Martinez (born in Oviedo, Spain) was studying to be a Roman Catholic priest, and was on a Spanish ship that stopped in the 1890's in the port of Aguadilla. He met my great grandmother Ana Curbelo at that time, and they ended up getting married. They had several children including my grandfather Fernando Muñiz-Curbelo. I have also been told that the Curbelo surname is originally from Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

Hello Jenny, I'm replying to your post because I am Janet Curbelo and my father who is now deceased was named Jose A. Curbelo. His family were born and raised in Puerto Rico, Arecibo. I too am trying to track down ancestors especially those who migrated to Puerto Rico. I understand the original Curbelo's came from the Canary Islands. Some families migrated to TX. Its from that point on that I cant track family to Puerto Rico and when they got there. I have an uncle named both Juan and Antonio. Back in those days male children were named after their father's and uncles. So with that said hopefully you will reply to me so that we can exchange information. I can be directly reached at jaceefem@yahoo.com

Hi Kimberly your message is so old now, but I wanted to try sending you a message anyhow. My last name is Curbelo also. My father( who is now deceased) was Jose A. Curbelo. He and his family lived in Puerto Rico, specifically in Arecibo. I have found that the Curbelo's I've met have all been related somewhere down the line. My research has shown that the original Curbelo family came from the Canary Island and settled in TX. I would luv to speak with you further about this. If you would like to you can email me at jaceefem@yahoo.com. I look forward to speaking with you as I too am trying to track down my ancestors.

There is no telling by now, but I know I fit right in with all of my Puerto Rican friends.
Many great grandfather's ago, the name was Juan Curbelo, then Juan Jose Antonio Curbelo, married to Rita Flores. They had 11 children and many do not have a place of death. I know there was a lot of perscusion of Latino's during this time and our family started leaving and or changing the spelling of Curbelo to Corbello, Curbello, and Courville to sound more French.
I'm wondering if any actually fled to Puerto Rico where they could continue to practice their Catholic religion and stay true to their heritage.
Jenny Young

hi. i am descended from juan curbelo on my mom's side. i dont have too much information on it, but i am trying to find some more. a good book to check out (if you can find it) is "yanaguana's successor's". its about the families of canary islanders who came to texas. i believe you can request an interlibrary loan. amarillo public library has a copy available that they lend out (most places keep it under lock and key). email me at: evilwitch_5001@yahoo.com if youre interested in exchanging information.

~amber

I have made 2 contacts in the Canaries. One was able to tell me that his Uncle had done extensive research looking for records. which is difficult because all are original manuscripts kept in churches and many were burned due to piracy. and that his uncle was now dead, but told him that the Curbelos were fishermen from the Azores Islands which is Portugal. I have found Inquistion records of Curvellos there.
please contact me matt.corbello@nortrax.com

best regards,
Matthew Corbello

Thanks Gonzalo, Appreciate a history on the family name. My Curbelo line also came from the Canary Islands, they came on
to Texas, settling in San Antonio. There are many Curbelo descendants in Texas also.

Thanks very much for your information. All information helps us all. Best to you, Mary Jo

Hello, my name is Gonzalo Curbelo. What I know of the last name is that it is originally from Portugal but has been present for over 1000 years in Spain, mostly in the Canary Islands. My Curbelo ancestry is from the Canary Islands and then migrated to URUGUAY, South America where Curbelo is now a very common last name. The reasons for Curbelo appearing often in Uruguay and Puerto Rico is because most of the Spaniards who migrated to these two nations were from the Canary Islands.

Hopes this gives some insight into your searches...

Regards,
Gonzalo Curbelo

Hi Kimberly, My name is Mary Jo, I am Marura's mom. I believe our Curbelo lines are different. Our Curbelo ancestors came from the Canary Islands in the 1730s and settled in San Antonio, Tx. There are many Curbelo lines to search for. I hope you connect with your line. Please let us know if we can help you. Good luck to you, Mary Jo

My name is Kimberly Curbelo. My father is Ray Jaime Curbelo and his brother is Jose juan Curbelo. Their father was Jose Curbelo but i have reason to believe that the name may have come from their mother's side - Amparo Curbelo. I don't know any further geology on the family. They came from Puerto Rico in the 1950's. I know i have cousins out there and it would be nice to met them, some may also have the last name Rivera but obviously that name is so popular that it may be useless to go by it. I've always been interested in the ancestery because we (deceased grandfather, grandfather and uncle) have color (caramel complexion) while no one else in the family does. If you think you may be related, please respond

Hello Francis. Sorry to take so long to respond! No, as far as I know, there has not been any research done on the Curbelo family in Spain (Canary Islands). It will take a very dedicated and generous spirit to do that, I'm afraid. The family is well documented back to ~1654 with Domingo Curbelo in the Canary Islands, but no further than that as far as I know. Good luck!

Juan Curbelo descendent

I just found this site and am amazed at all the messages! I am a descendent of Patricia Ellen Curbello and Henry Edmund Linney. Patricia's parents were Pedro "Pierre" Nicomedio Curbello (b.1809 d.1879) and Ellen de la Mirande(b.1811 d.1871). I have the direct line of Curbellos and their wives back to Juan Curbelo in the Canary Islands. I am wondering if anyone has had any luck tracing the Curbelos in the Canary Islands?
