John Hamilton and Amelia Curl

I am trying to find further information on Amelia Curl who was married to John Hamilton and resided some time during the 1800's in Verona, Frontenac Co. Ontario. Amelia was born roughly 1813 according to 1852 Cnd census. John's parents were Jacob Hamilton and Mary Gray from Armagh, Ireland. The Curl line has given me great trouble. Any help in either line would be great. I am the great great granddaughter of Mary Hamilton, John and Amelia's daughter.

Would love to find out if our Curls are related. Lineage is so intriging to me. I just missed my grandmothers neice, who was 83 and only lived a few miles from me and she was the historian for the Shepherd family I was informed. She passed away Wed and I saw the Hill name in the obit as her father and got curious. Would like to meet you there and bring my info and my daughter in laws and see if there is any connection. Would be good to find the link if there is one. Thank you for responding to my query.

I am from the same family line. I am also stuck on John T Curl. I do think that he was born in VA. The area I have been looking in is New Kent VA. I also found a reference to the Blisland Parrish VA. So now I am looking at that. I have been able to track him from VA, to NC where he got married and then to Grainger County. I was just there in July looking for his gravesite. I struck out on this trip. I have another lead so I may try that one at a later date. I would be happy to share what I have. Let me know if you have anything as well. Thanks.

Joe

Maggie Curl, daughter of Maggie E and Thomas E Curl (Ohio/Iowa/Kansas)

I'm searching for ancestors of Herbert Addison Sayre and Maggie Curl. The Sayre side is fairly simple, there seems to be fairly solid documention on that side. The Curl side seems a bit more tangled.

I'm starting knowing that my grandfather was Clarence Herbert Sayre, m. Alice Marie Allen, son of Herbert Sayre and Margaret/Maggie Curl, with a sister of Pauline.

I'm not really sure how to present the data I've discovered so far, so I'll try to summarize then list sources at the end.

Maggie Curl was the daughter of Thomas E Curl and Maggie E (unknown maiden name). At first, because of the 1900 record listed belowe, I assumed that Thomas E Curl had a father named Thomas E also. In the 1900 census Thomas is listed as a male, born abt 1860, a widower. In 1880 and 1885, a Thomas E, b. 1831, is living with Maggie E. I thought this was her husband's dad because of the age difference and the fact that Thomas, in 1900, is a widower.

This gets a bit more complex. Suddenly, in 1905, a Mrs T E is listed as a widow. Looking at the image of 1900, it actually looks as though the sex of Thomas was female, scratched out and made male. I think Maggie E used her husband's name and whoever tallied the 1900 data saw the name Thomas and figure it was a mistake and changed it.

So, I now think Thomas E Curl, b. 1831 Ohio, married Maggie E, b. Aug 1860 Iowa. They seem to have no children in 1880, so I assume that Hary, Maggie, Olive, Goldia and Harold are the children of both of them. Thomas E is old enough that he could very well have had a previous wife and children. It may also be possible that Maggie E was pregnant with Hary before Thomas E married her?

Anyway, Thomas E Curl seems to have died between 1885 and 1900.

Does this all seem plausible? Does anyone have any further info on Thomas E Curl or Maggie E?

Year: 1880; Census Place: Junction, Davis, Kansas; Roll 379; Family History Film: 1254379; Page: 237B; Enumeration District: 54; Image: 0035
http://search.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=View&r=an&dbid...
Thomas E Curl, 50, b. abt 1831 Ohio, a boarder of the Bartlett household, a travelling salesman. Jul 1895 Oklahoma, father born Ohio, mother born Iowa
Notes: Thomas's sex on this form is crossed out and changed to M from F.
William Curl, Hertford & Gates Co.s, NC

In my earlier post I gave some ancestry on my husband's great grandfather William Curl who married Martha Brown in Gates Co. NC.

I now am not sure of the ancestry of William. He may not have been the son of Edward. It seems from various records that he was born 1867/1868 in Gates or Hertford. He was 3 years old on the 1870 Hertford Co. census and was living with the James Dukes (Duke?) family. On the 1880 census (Gates Co.), at age 12, he was a servant living with a Howell family. He married Martha Brown in 1886 at age 18.

I had believed he was the W.T. (short for William Thomas?) or Thomas on various censuses, but after realizing he was married at 18, I knew W.T/Thomas (was 8 to 10 years older) wasn't my William.

Edward Curle who was the suspected father died in 1870. William still could have been an unrecorded son who was sent to live with other families after his father's death.

Does anyone know anything about William? He and Martha had one son, Gonie Mack Curl. When Gonie Mack was a boy, William disappeared and his family never knew what became of him. That's partly why he's such a mystery, I guess....

Hertford Co/Gates Co NC Curl/Curle family

Hi

Is anyone currently researching the Curl/Curle family from Hertford Co. and Gates Co. NC? They're a hard bunch to unravel.

I can only go back as far as John Curle, born abt. 1780, maybe in Gates Co. His son Edward was my husband's gg-grandfather. Edward was born 1834/1836 in Hertford Co. and was a Union soldier in the Civil War. His wife was Eliza (Elizabeth?). Edward died in 1870.

Edward's son William Curl was born abt 1857 in Hertford Co. and was married in and moved to Gates Co. He disappeared sometime after his son Gonie was born.

Besides needing info anyone has on the Curl's, I'd like to find the maiden name of Edward's wife Eliza. I'm very sure she was married to a Rodgers before she married Edward.

Andy help would be appreciated! I'd also love to correspond with any searching these ancestors! Thanks!

Dawn Hayman Curl

Re: Curl Grainger Co. TN

I am a 4th great grandson of John T Curl who resided in Grainger Co, Tenn. My 3 rd was William Henry Curl who left Grainger County to settle on Bear Creek on the Polk and Cedar County borders in Missouri, ca 1834. W. H. Curl lived the remainder of his life there and is buried in Polk Co with several Curl descendants.

One theory is that John T Curl was the son of William Curl, the revoltutionary War Vetan and maybe born near Westport, Va 20 miles west of where I reside. Many of the Tyre family were in that area in mid 1700's and at the time John T. Curl was born ca 1786. Also the theory if John T. is of this William Curl then he is related the the Cpt Thomas Curl who died ca 1701 and is buried with a huge headstone at Hampton, Va. These Curls were in Va in the 1600's.

The second theory is that John T. Curl was of another William Curl family who resided on the Cape Fear River in North Carolina. This family were Quakers.

No one has yet link which William John T is from.

Undoubtedly he was born in Virginia and if so very close to where I am now residing. Though he did mary a Hightower in North Carolina. His wife was related to the Hightowers who settled just outside of Richmond, Va in the mid to late 1600's, about 50 miles from where I reside.

Let me know if you have aanything to add:

Charles Curl, b. August 18, 1824, Ringwood, England, perhaps a son of William Curl and Elizabeth Ridout; m. Elizabeth Jenkins, November 18, 1849, Ringwood, England; d. February 3, 1909, Manteno, IL; burial in Elmwood Cemetery, Manteno, Kankakee, IL
Elizabeth was born June 9, 1826.
The 1871 Census of Ringwood, Hampshire, England, has the following entry:
Charles Curl 48 b. Ringwood; Agriculture
Elizabeth 46 b. Dorset
Tom 21 b. Ringwood
Charles 19 b. Ringwood
Robert 10 b. Ringwood
George 8 b. Ringwood
Frederick 5 b. Ringwood
Elizabeth 1 b. Ringwood
Fanny E. Deag 13 b. Somerset, Henstridge "Niece"
Next to Moses Cull 81 widower, b. Ringwood
From this, we start our research on Charles Curl, Karen (Jarka) Henry’s Great-Great-Great Grandfather. In 1881, Charles and most of his family was still living in Ringwood, England (on Wick Street). The household included: Charles 53, Elizabeth 55, Charles Jr. 29, Henry 25, Fanny 22, Robert 20, George 18, Elizabeth 12, and Beatrice 1. Fanny is listed as if she were a daughter. However, she is clearly the Fanny Deag (pronounced Day) in the 1871 census named as a “niece.” Fanny had married the Curl’s son, Thomas, and given birth to Beatrice in January, 1880.
Shortly after the 1881 census was taken, Charles and Elizabeth brought their family to America to join their two eldest sons, William and Thomas, and their daughter Kate (Curl) Read in Manteno, Kankakee Co., Illinois. Almost all of the family members became farmers. Robert and at least one other brother moved to Minnesota to find work. After Robert’s death in 1886, though, the Curl family split up. Some moved to Washington State, while some remained in Illinois.
The 1900 federal census of the United States shows Charles and Elizabeth in Long Branch, Pierce Co., Washington, with their children, Charles (47) and Elizabeth (Curl) Richardson (31), along with Elizabeth's children, Mable and Benjamin Richardson. Next door was Charles and Elizabeth's son, George, and his family. Nearby was also the home of their son, Harry Curl. The census record showed that Charles and Elizabeth had immigrated to the U.S. in 1881. Elizabeth was the mother of nine children, eight of whom were still living (Robert had died in 1886).
Elizabeth died on June 18, 1903 and was buried in the Old German Lutheran Cemetery, Pierce City, WA. After Elizabeth’s death, Charles returned to Illinois and died in Manteno in 1909.
Children:
Thomas Curl, b. 1849, Ringwood, England; m. Fannie Day, 1884, IL; d. 1935
Charles Curl, b. 1851, Ringwood; unmarried; d. Washington?
William Curl, b. 1854; m. Anna Day, 1878, IL; d. 1947
Harry Curl, b. 1856, Ringwood, England; m. Elizabeth __, 1891; d.
Kate Curl, b. 1858, Ringwood, England; m. George Read, 1877; d.
George Curl, b. 1861, Ringwood, England; m. Carrie __, 1892; d.
Robert Curl, 1864, Ringwood, England; d. around 1886, Minnesota
Fred M. Curl, b. June, 1866, Ringwood, England; m. Elizabeth M. Gill;
d. Washington?
Elizabeth Curl, b. 1868, Ringwood, England; m. __ Richardson; d.

Children of Charles Curl

Thomas Curl [Charles], b. January 18, 1849, Ringwood, England; m. Fannie Deag (or Day), June 10, 1884, IL; d. 1935
Thomas was christened February 25, 1850.
Fannie was born in England in April, 1859. She came to live with the Curl family in Ringwood, England, sometime before 1871. It is possible she was an orphan and was adopted by the Curls. In fact, on her marriage license to Thomas Curl in 1884, she lists her parents as Charles and Elizabeth Curl.
In 1900’s census of Manteno, Illinois, Fanny claimed to be the mother of 9 children, but only five were in the home at the time. James Curl was working as a servant for William Corley (next to Thomas Curl’s brother William). Beatrice was married already and living with her husband, Edward Carlson.
The 1910 federal U.S. Census shows Thomas and Fannie in Manteno, Kankakee Co., IL, with children: Charles (20), Fanny (17), Kate (14), Rose (11), William (8), and Robert (6). Fannie was said to have been the mother of eleven children, eight of whom were still living.
Fannie died in June, 1917.
The 1920 census shows Thomas as a widow with his children Rose, William, and Robert living in Rockville, Kankakee County. Though we have evidence that they had three other children (Harry, Carl, and Helen), they were not listed in the home, leading us to believe that these were not children of Thomas and Fanny.
In 1930, Thomas was still in Rockville with children Rose, William, and Robert. According to this census, he immigrated to the U.S. in 1876.
Thomas died in 1935.
Children:
Beatrice Curl, b. January 24, 1880; m. Edward Carlson
James Henry Curl, b. September 12, 1884; m. Florence Oliver; d. December 9, 1918, Kankakee, IL
Charles Curl, b. August, 1889; d. after 1910
Ollie Curl, b. September, 1890
Fanny E.M. Curl, b. March 10, 1893; d. September 18, 1986
Kate Curl, b. April 16, 1896; m. John A. Benn; d. April 13, 1982
Rose J. Curl, b. March, 1899; d. after 1930
William Curl, b. 1902; d. after 1930
Robert G. Curl, b. 1904; d. after 1930

Charles Curl [Charles], b. November, 1851, Ringwood; m. Kate F., around 1905, Washington; d. Washington?
Charles immigrated to the U.S. at about the same time as the rest of his family (1881).
The 1900 federal U.S. Census shows Charles unmarried at the age of 47 in Long Branch, Pierce Co., Washington, in the home of his parents, Charles and Elizabeth Curl. Also in the home was his sister, Elizabeth (Curl) Richardson, along with her children, Mabel and Benjamin Richardson. Next door was Charles' brother, George Curl; nearby was another brother, Harry, with his family.
Charles married Kate around 1905. Kate was born in Pennsylvania around 1856.
In 1910, Charles and Kate were living next to Charles’ brother, Henry in Longbranch.
By 1930, Charles was a widower, but he was still living in Longbranch.
No Children.

William Curl [Charles], b. 1854; m. Anna Day, 1878, IL; d. 1947
William immigrated to Canada and then to the U.S. by 1873, where he worked as a farm hand for George Day until 1875. In 1877, he received his naturalization. At that time, he declared himself a member of the Republican party.
In 1878, William married Anna Day. Anna was born in December, 1857, in England, a daughter of George Day (son of James Day and Fanny Belling) and Fannie Jenkins (daughter of Robert Jenkins and Martha Mogg).
In 1880, William and Anna were living in Rockville, Kankakee Co., IL, with their first child, Mary.
The 1900 plat map of Manteno Township showed William Curl owning 120 acres in the E/2 NW/4 of Section 17 and 356.50 acres in Section 7 (neighboring George and Kate Reed). The acreage in Section 7 included all of the SW/4, all of the S/2 of the N/2, the S/2 N/2 N/2, and a portion of the SW/4 SW/4 SE/4, bordering the North Branch of Rock Creek. As of 1990, much of that property (121 acres) was still owned by the Curl family (Mary Curl). The home of Alan Curl was located on the far mid-south edge of the section. The census in 1900 showed William and Anna living in Manteno with their five surviving children (Anna had lost two).
The 1910 federal U.S. Census shows William G (or J) Curl and his wife Anna in Manteno, Kankakee Co., IL, with children Mary (31) and Norris (18) in the home. Anna was said to have been the mother of seven children, three of whom were still living. Also nearby is the home of their son Albert and the homes of William's siblings, Thomas Curl and Kate Reed.
In 1920, William and Anna were in Manteno with their unmarried daughter, Mary. Both of them claimed to have immigrated to the U.S. in 1873. In 1930, they were still in Manteno. This time, they were joined by a granddaughter, Ethel (b. around December, 1929), a daughter of their deceased son William. Anna claimed to have come to the U.S. in 1863; William in 1873.
Children:
Mary Jane Curl, b. March, 1878; unmarried; d. 1937
Alice Irene Curl, b. 1880; d. 1886
William Albert Curl, b. June, 1883; m. Daisy __, 1910; d. 1926
Myrtle Anna Curl, b. November, 1885; d. 1901
George Norris Curl, b. May 19, 1891; d. January 15, 1979
Ada Bell Curl, b. November, 1894; d. 1900
Robert Curl, d. before 1910

Henry “Harry” Curl [Charles], b. May, 1856, Ringwood, England; m. Elizabeth __, 1891, probably in Manteno, IL; d. after 1930
At about the age of 24, Harry immigrated to the U.S. (1880).
Around 1891, he married Elizabeth. She was born in September, 1867, in England and had immigrated in 1888.
The 1900 federal census shows Harry living in Long Branch, Pierce Co., Washington, with his wife, Elizabeth, and two children: Fred and Harry. Elizabeth was the mother of three children, two of whom were still living.
In 1910, Henry and Elizabeth were in Longbranch with their two sons, next door to Charles and Kate Curl.
In 1930, Henry and Elizabeth were still in Longbranch, near Fred
Children:
Fred Curl, b. September, 1893, IL
Harry Curl, b. May, 1897, IL

Kate Curl [Charles], b. June, 1858, Ringwood, England, a daughter of Charles Curl and Elizabeth Jenkins; m. George Read, around 1877;
George was born in England in June, 1856.
They were married in 1877 in England. In 1880, they immigrated to the U.S. and settled in Manteno Township, Kankakee Co., IL.
The 1900 plat map of Manteno Township showed George and Kate Reed owning 114.48 acres in the south fractional part of the SE/4 of Section 7. The North Branch of Rock Creek ran through the property. Bordering their property on the north and west was the estate of William Curl. As of 1990, the Reed farm was owned by Clifford Curl.
The 1900 federal census of Rockville, Kankakee Co., IL, shows George and "Cate" (sic) with their son, Tom (15). They had immigrated to the U.S. in 1880. Also in the home was a 19-year old schoolteacher, whose name is illegible (Flonetres Thursting?).
In 1910, George and Kate were in Manteno, Kankakee Co., IL, next to Kate's brother, William Curl, and a few doors down from another brother, Thomas Curl.
In 1920, George and Kate were living in Allyn, Mason Co,. WA, next to their son, Thomas, and Kate’s brother Fred.
In 1930, the family was shown in Longbranch, Pierce Co., Washington, near the rest of the Curl family that had moved there. Thomas was shown as a widower. His children were not in the home.
Children:
Thomas "Tom" Charles Reed, b. October 30, 1884, IL; m. May A.; d. after 1930 (ch: Goldie K. 1912, George E. 1914)

Fredrick M. Curl [Charles], b. June, 1866, Ringwood, England; m. (2) Elizabeth M. Gill, around 1899, Washington; d. Washington?
Elizabeth was born in England in February, 1875, a daughter of John and Mary A. Gill, and had immigrated to the U.S. in 1889.
In 1900, Fred and Elizabeth were living in Pickering, Mason Co,. Washington with Elizabeth’s parents. Fred was an engineer on the railroad, as was his father-in-law. In 1910, Fred and Elizabeth were in a few miles away in Allyn. Fred claimed to have been married prior to his marriage to Elizabeth. He was now working as a general farmer.
In 1920, Fred and Elizabeth were living in Allyn, Mason Co,. Washington, with their son, Myron. Fred’s sister, Kate (Curl) Read, also lived there.
By 1930, Fred and Elizabeth had moved to Seattle, where Fred had a job as a janitor for a church. Elizabeth’s mother was living with them.
Child:
Myron Reynolds Curl, b. November 15, 1914, Tacoma, WA; m. Phoebe Edna Williams, October 15, 1952, Fort Bragg, NC; d. January 3, 1998, Fayetteville, NC.

George E. Curl [Charles], b. 1864, Ringwood, England; m. Carrie Adams, 1892; d. after 1930.
George immigrated to the U.S. in 1879, probably with his brother, William.
In 1892, he married Carrie Adams. Carrie was born in January, 1869. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1880.
The 1900 federal U.S. Census shows George and Carrie in Long Branch, Pierce Co., WA, with their children, Edna L., George R., Henry C., and Howard. Carrie was the mother of four children, all of whom were accounted for. Next door were George's parents and two siblings, Charles Jr. and Elizabeth (Curl) Richardson. Nearby in Long Branch was the home of another brother, Harry Curl.
George and Carrie “Curle” were shown in West Elma, Chehalis Co., WA, in 1910. They had children: Edna, Harry, Howard, May, Agnes, and Warden. Carrie claimed to be the mother of seven children, but only six were living. This tells us that George Jr. had died. George Sr. was working as a teamster for a grocery company.
By 1920, they were back in Longbranch with their three youngest children. George was a general farmer. In 1930, all the children were out of the house, but their daughter Agnes and her husband lived next door.
Children:
Edna L. Curl, b. August 1894, WA; m. Oga Ing (ch: Edna Elvis Ing August 8, 1917, Tacoma, WA)
George R. Curl, Jr., b. June, 1896, WA; d. before 1910.
Henry Charles Curl, b. February 2, 1898, WA (logger for Callows & Co.)
Howard Curl, b. September, 1899, WA
May Curl, b. around 1901, WA
Agnes Curl, b. July 9, 1903, WA; m. John Schultz, around 1924 (ch: Francis L. 1925, Muriel E. 1929); d. October, 1985, Longbranch, WA
Warden Curl, b. around 1905, WA

Robert Curl [Charles], 1864, Ringwood, England; d. around 1886, Minnesota

Elizabeth Curl [Charles], b. 1868, Ringwood, England; m. (1) __ Richardson; m. (2) ____ Parrish, around 1901; m. (3) William S. Walker, around 1906, MI.
Elizabeth's husband was born in Wisconsin.
The 1900 federal U.S. Census shows Elizabeth Richardson in the home of her parents, Charles and Elizabeth Curl, in Long Branch, Pierce Co., Washington. Also in the home are Elizabeth's children, Mabel and Benjamin Richardson, and her brother, Charles Curl, Jr.
Around 1901, Elizabeth moved to Wisconsin, likely the home of her late husband. There, she remarried to a Mr. Parrish, who was also born in Wisconsin. She had two more children by this union: Henrietta and Verna K. Parrish. But the marriage did not last long. Around 1906, Elizabeth married a third time to William Walker and moved to Little Traverse, Emmet Co., Michigan. They had two children: Thomas W. and Bessie M. Walker.
William was born in Ohio around 1858. He was a teamster, doing street work. The entire family showed up in Little Traverse in the 1910 census. However, after the birth of their son, Nelson (1913), the family moved to Manteno, Kankakee, IL. William worked as a laborer on the railroad. Mabel was the only child that did not appear with them in the 1920 census.
It appears that they didn’t like Illinois as they did Michigan, so by 1930, they moved back to Emmet County, Michigan. Bennett was married around 1924 and showed up in Little Traverse with his wife and three children in 1930. William and Elizabeth were in Springvale Township with their sons, Thomas and Nelson. Thomas worked there as a blacksmith.
Children
Mabel A. Richardson, b. August, 1892, IL (may have married in Kankakee)
Benjamin (or Bennett) M. Richardson, b. November, 1898, IL; m. Viva L. 1924, Little Traverse, MI (ch: Eileen M. around 1924, Bennett M. around December 1925, Burton A. around August 1929)
Henrietta Parrish, b. around 1902, WI (may have married in Kankakee)
Verna Kate Parrish, b. around 1904, WI (may have married in Kankakee)
Thomas W. Walker, b. May 27 1908, MI; d. April, 1976, Petoskey, MI
Bessie M. Walker, b. around March, 1910, Little Traverse, MI (may have married in Kankakee)
Nelson F. Walker, b. May 25, 1913, MI; d. October 8, 1980, Springvale, Emmet, MI
Hi nceagles, Is there any chance you can find more information forward on Duncan and patricia Curl? The furthest I can go back is to Jeremiah b. 1812 d. 1873 and his wife Lucinda(summers)Curl b.1818 d. 1893. I branch from their son John William b. 1844 d. 1892.
From what I can gather John's father Jeremiah might have been in the Civil War together

Dear Sherry, I don't know if I can be of assistance, but I am curious to know if you have details for a Samuel Curl born in Dec 1800 and a Barbara Curl (nee Burket) born in 1801 in Pennsylvania. They were both buried in Rodman Cemetary Roaring Springs PA. They are GGGGrandparents of mine.

I have found loads and loads of Curl's and Curles in VA and figure that might have been where my family originated from when they first came to the US. I am currently living in England, but would be happy to ring you if you want to talk on the phone. My email address is piers1256@msn.com I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards Suzanne Currell the spelling of our family name was changed from Curl or Curle by one of my grandfathers.

Hi Karen,

William Curl & Ann(e) Pitt are 8x-great-grandparents. My GG-grandfather, Grafton Curl, moved to Labrador along with his brother John. Another brother, Richard, went to Ontario. This would have been early-mid 1800's.

Drop me a note at lbbear@nbnet.nb.ca and we can compare notes. Also, Glen Bateman: if you're reading this, please contact me as I have lost your email address.

Thanks.
Jason Curl
Fredericton, New Brunswick
