Your very welcome. I had family that lived in Gilpin county and my Dad gets their paper. There is a article each week that lists the highlights from 30, 60, 90, and 120 years ago. When I get a chance to read it I put info regarding deaths and births from the area for others trying to do family history. Was this Curnows your family? If it was he was very young for sure.

Was just looking at this family last night as it happens, as an aside to the Curnow family I was checking out.

I think you will find your James Curnow was bptzd 1 Feb 1807 to William Curnow & Mary Richards, who married in St Ives 12 Dec 1802, and had about 10 children 1803 - 1824.

In 1851 James Curnow bptzd 1807 & therefore 44 + wife Jane Hollow age 39 can be found at Halsetown, 2 miles inland from main St Ives, with the 5 children you name present.

In 1841 the enumerator went in for abbreviations:
they are Jas 30 Jane 30 Jane 7 Jas 6 John 3 Fras 1.

Your William bptzd 1832 is missing from the household.

And I think you will find him with the grandparents & one of his aunts, also in Halsetown St Ives:

Wm Curnow 65 Mary 65 Wm 9 Alice 20.

Is that a start for you? There is much more....!

HI after any info on the family of William Curnow who came to Australia in 1854. The info we have is
“William Curnow (1832-1903), clergyman and journalist, was baptized on 2 December 1832 at St Ives, Cornwall, England, son of James Curnow, miner, and his wife Jane, née Hallow. He was educated for the Wesleyan Methodist ministry, which he entered at 21 and was soon sent to Australia. He arrived in Sydney on 23 May 1854 in the American Lass." Taken from Australian Dictionary of Biography, Volume 8
Found a Jane and James Curnow in St Ives via 1861 census and this lists his siblings as Jane, John, Francis and William. Any help appreciated
kate Row

Hi there

I am hoping someone can help. I am looking into the background for ELIZABETH CURNOW born c1834 in Arklow (Co Wicklow, Ireland). Her parents were MICHAEL CURNOW and ELIZABETH MATTHEWS. She is believed to have travelled to Australia in about 1852 when she was about 18. She married WILLIAM MATTHEWS (1822-1896) in Irish Town (Geelong, Victoria – Australia) on 17 March 1855

I am seeking information on Elizabeth’s background and family and why was someone with a Cornish name born in Ireland? Family stories said she came from Zennor (or nearby) in Cornwall. Is there a link to her husband who also came from that area? The marriage certificate records that her father was a boatman. I have found no record of her birth or baptism nor any records of her parents. Does anyone know on what ship she travelled to Australia?

I can share information on descendents of this couple
For Lorelei Krawchuk
My message about Jonathan Curnow and Loveday Olivey is on a message board but not my later message about Nicholas Curnow who married Elizabeth Cook. Nicholas was the son of John. His brother Nicholas (1782-1855) was my ggggrandfather. He was a mason in Garras. My e-mail address is r.n.curnow@reading.ac.uk. My father only recorded three of Elizabeth and Nicholas' children-Nicholas, Samuel and Elizabeth Ann. I can now add some more! Robert Nicholas Curnow.

Lorelei
I too am descended from Jonathan and Loveday. My late father in the 1950s working solely with Mawgan-in-Menage parish records had to assume that a Philippa Curnow (1683-1743)was Jonathan`s mother. Phillippa was recorded as Philip but was a daughter. Her parents were John (Parish Clerk)(1647-1724) and Anne Cornow. Why was her son a Curnow? He found no birth record for Jonathan. Was he illegimate or did Phillippa marry another Curnow? This all seems unlikely and the new suggestion probably right. My father traced back to Philip Cowrnowe (1560-?), son of Philip Curnowe. Can you trace back from Jonathan?
I hope to hear from you. Robert Curnow
