John F. Curran - IRE to Pennsylvania

Looking for information on John F. Curran. Born about 1842 in Ireland. Arrived in US about 1859. Married Mary Langan in Hawley, PA in 1865. They also lived in Pleasant Valley (now Avoca) and later Scranton.

They had eight children: Mary Ellen, Elizabeth, Anthony, Patrick, John J., Winifred, Thomas, Catherine and Abigail. Patrick died in the "Mud Run Train Wreck" in 1888 at age 15. His brother Anthony was also seriously injured. Winifred was my great grandmother.

I am trying to determine where in Ireland John Curran came from and who his parents were. His father may have been Anthony.

Mary Langan's parents were Patrick Langan and Elizabeth "Bessie" Bourke (or Burke).
just starting research of Curran family. My grandparents are Thomas Curran who married Catherine/Katherine Hynes and they had 14 children 10 of which survived Patrick, Sylvester, Thomas, Kevin, James, Christopher, Joseph, Anastasia, Emily and Claire (my mother b.1923 d. 1995). I know that Catherine/Katherine known as Kate had at least 3 siblings Emily,Mary and Bridget. During the 1950's Mary and Emily owned property in Kill Co Kildare and for a while operated a tea shop from their bungalow. Do not know anything about grandfathers family. Any connections?
My mother's grandmother was:

Mary Eva Curran (b. 28 Jul 1884 OHIO / Died: Feb 1979 Los Angeles, CA) Married to John Frederick Rickert

Mary Eva's parents:

John Thomas Curran (Born: JAN 1854
OHIO / Died: 10 Dec 1892 Nashville, Davidson, Tennessee)
and
Mary Ann Flanagan (Born: MAY 1859 IRELAND / Died: 21 FEB 1939)

*** Ship registry has John Thomas and Mary Ann entering the U.S. with one son, Michael, in 1870's) We believe John Thomas was born in Ohio but traveled to Ireland and brought back his wife and son. Though we are not certain that Mary Ann didn't already have the child before she married John Thomas. Could possibly have been married to his deceased brother, uncertain.)

Other children of John Thomas and Mary Ann (nee Flanagan) Curran may have been:
Michael 1878
Willie H. (William?) 1890
Thomas Jr. 1891

John Thomas Curran's parents:

Thomas Curran (Born: 1831 Ireland / Died: 05-07-1893 Nashville,Davidson,Tennessee)
and
Elizabeth Flaherty (could be O'Flaherty and could be spelled differently. We are not certain about her name or accuracy). (b. Ireland 1840)

Other children of Thomas and Elizabeth Curran may have been:
Edward 1858
Katie 1863
Alice 1864
Thomas 1864-1892
Sarah 1869
Patrick 1873
William 1878

We heard a past rumor that one or more of Mary Eva's brothers or uncles MAY have been priests in County Cork.

Mary Eva Curran and John Frederick Rickert had three children:

Norma Lee Elizabeth Rickert (b. Sept 21, 1920 Louisville, KY / died Feb 14, 1982 Burbank, CA) Married James Johnson, 2 children: Judith Johnson and Michael Johnson.

and

Louis Henry Hamby Rickert (b.
I'm looking for information concerning the life, parents, and possible siblings of Catherine CURRAN, born 1786 in Ireland, possibly in Queens County (County Laois/Leix) (birthplace of Catherine's first child, Ann).

Catherine married Michael "Finton" Fenton KEARNEY, who also was born in Ireland, perhaps in King's County (County Offaly). They emigrated to New York, residing in Genesee County (now Wyoming County) by the 1820s. They had the following children: (1) Ann Kearney [m. O'NEIL/EASTMAN/RICH/WARNER]; (2) Edward T. Kearney [m. WHEELER]; (3) John Michael Kearney [m. GILSON GILSHENAN]; and (4) Catherine Serena Kearney [m. LINDON/FLANIGAN].

Catherine Curran Kearney died in 1860 in Erie, Erie County, Pennsylvania where she had been living with her daughter, Catherine Serena Kearney Flanigan.

Thank you for any information you might have to share!

Dave

Elizabeth Curran from Crusheen Co Clare

My name is Ione Jolly. I am from Darwin, NT, Australia. I am researching the O'Connor / Curran / Dwyer branch of the family from Co. Clare.

John O'Connor's (my ggg-grandfather) death certificate (DOD 1891 Victoria) says he came from Co. Clare. His death certificate does not list his parents though.

He is listed as going from Liverpool (?) to Adelaide in 1855 on the Grand Trianon. His wife Elizabeth is also listed as a passenger. On the shipping records it says he was from Co. Clare as well.

His wife Elizabeth Curran (DOD 1874) has Crusheen, Co. Clare listed as her place of birth and the location of her marriage on her death certificate. It also has parents - John Curran and Catherine Dwyer - listed.

I have looked through the Griffith's Valuations for Clare and may have figured out where in Crusheen (also known as Inchicronan) Elizabeth came from. The only John Curran listed in Inchicronan in the records was from Carrownacloghy. The only Dwyer listed in Inchicronan was a Jeremiah Dwyer in Carrownacloghy. Thus, I am fairly sure this is where is Elizabeth Curran came from.

There are plenty of John O'Connors listed in the surrounding areas but none in Inchicronan (this would be fine though as wasn't it tradition to get married in the wife's parish?).

The only records I can get on Crusheen are from LDS and they start in 1860. I am fairly sure Elizabeth was born about 1834 as she was said to be 40 when she died in 1874 (after childbirth).

Their children were Mary Francis (my gg-grandmother), Catherine, Thomas, John, Daniel, Michael, Elizabeth, James and Bridget.

Mary Francis O'Connor married John McCristal - also from Victoria but whose parents were from Co Tyrone.

Any help would be much appreciated.
Grandfather Mathias Curran

I am looking for information on my granfathers family which I believe came from county Mayo, Ireland (but don't hold me to that). Here is what I have found. Mathias, age 20, Mathew, age 19, Stevan, age 15, and Patrick, age 10 immigrated in 1880. I have not found any sisters or parents nor can I find the port of departure or arrival. They all came for awhile to St. Paul, Minnesota where all eventually married and had their first children. They all then mmoved to Tacoma, Washington. Three of the brothers remained there, but my granfather and grandmother Anna O'Malley Curran returned to St. Paul and remaind there for the rest of their lives.

Matthew married Winnie O'Ioole and they had nine children by 1910.
Stevan married Hanna F. (unknown last name) and they had five children by 1900.
Patrick married Bridget (unknown last name) and had six children in 1900.

What I am looking for is more brothers or sisters of my gradfather and possible leads to his parents. Also I figure I must have a ton of cousins out in Washington that I would like to hear from. You have a bunch in Minnesota and spread out from there also.

Thanks for any help.

Armina Curran's husband (photograph)

I posted the attached cabinet photo on DeadFred recently. It is labeled, "Armina's husband" on back. Armina is Armina Curran, daughter of David & Susannah Shaw Curran of Coshocton, Ohio. (David Curran came to Ohio from New Jersey and was married previously, tho I have no info on previous wives.)
Armina's husband was not a Curran. We don't know his name or where the couple lived, but probably somewhere other than Ohio. Armina was born in 1849 and did not marry until after the 1870 census. The photo was taken at a studio in Chicago.
If anyone knows the identity of Armina's husband, please contact me.
Thank you.
Janet Cobb
I have finally, after much ado, found where in Ireland my Currans came from - Longford County. Patrick Curran, stone mason, arrived in the US in 1847 and became a citizen in 1853. He had family in Mauch Chunk, PA(present day Jim Thorpe) and that is where he settled. Christopher F. Curran (also a stone mason in Mauch Chunk) was either his father, brother, or cousin as he was referenced as next of kin on Patrick's Civil War veteran's information. He died in Wilkes Barre, PA in 1888 of lung disease. He had 2 wives Ann was the first who died in 1873 and Elizabeth Dougherty the second. There were two children with the first wife, James H. and Henry. There were no children with the second wife.

Hi,

Dont know if anyone can help, and I realise that this is a long shot. On My Great Grandmothers birth certificate, it has her name as Annie Curran Graham, but no fathers name is on the certificate (hangs head in shame !!! lol) Her mother is Jane Graham who I know at this point was widdowed and Graham was her married name. They were living at the time at 70, Greengate, Salford, Lancashire. I do know that before this they had lived in Ireland, as her sister was born in Belfast. Has anyone else got any skeletons in their closet, which could possibly tie into these.

Many thanks

Gill
x
My grandfather Thomas James Curran was born in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois in 1876. His father______ Curran came from Ireland and allegedly went back to Ireland from the US to get his wife or get married (?) and then returned. The wife's maiden name was "Mays".
Possible name of Thomas James Curran's father would probably be that of one of his sons?
His sons were 1. Thomas James, 2. Neal William,
3. George Douglas, 4. Arwin ("Pete"), 5. Walter James,
6. Lloyd Emery ("Mike") 7. Harvey "Hec".
additionally:
Thomas James Curran married Lucille Mary Zwissig or Zwessig . (She was supposedly born in Bern, Switzerland 1878) They resided in Illinois until about 1900, moving to Ohio. By 1920, they lived in Indianapolis Indiana. In addition to their 7 sons, they also had 2 daughters, Lucille "Skeets" and Eugenia "Jean"

Just found this list and I have had a Curran question for years since I started family history.
I have a Laura Adams b. VA 1812 married John Harris b. TN in 1809. Married in Wilson County TN 1832 to TX in 1851.
A writing by great aunt states that Laura was descendant of "The Patriot, Curran". I don't know who parents of Laura were. Could anyone clear up this Irish Patriot thing? A Harris marriage to a Rogers resulted in Curran Rogers a TX Ranger and the name used again in later families.

Can anyone give me any information on James Curran born c1877, who was one of the survivors on HMS Victoria which sank on 22 June 1893 after a collision with HMS Camperdown off the coast of Syria. A photo of James, apparently taken in Cheltenham, was included in a batch of family photos I have recently been given but his connection with the family is unknown. The family in question was based in Nottingham and Sheffield around the time of the collision so this may be a clue as to the origins of James. Any information would be very much appreciated.
Amelia

CURRAN CONNECTION TO HUGHES/MCCARRON CLAN (MASS.)

I'm trying to find a connection to my family with Curran. my grandfather (George Andrew Hughes, b. 1893) is supposed to have had cousins with the surname of Curran. I have been able to account for the marriages or spinster status of all his aunts except 2 (1 maternal and 1 paternal) and I wonder if one of them is the connection. My great grandmother had an older sister Catherine McCarron, b. circa 1853. I don't know anything more about her--did she marry a Curran? My great grandfather had an older sister Mary Hughes, b. circa 1845. I don't know if Mary ever left Ireland--she certainly could have as a married woman--did she marry a Curran? Any information greatly appreciated.
Marie

Here is what I have, my gggrandfather, Patrick Curran was born somewhere in Ireland in about 1835. At some point he came to the states and at some point married Ann(a) Fagan who was born in Ireland in about 1845, place unknown.

In the 1870 US Census they show up under the name Curren and have a son James H. Curran, my ggrandfather who was born in 1868 in Mauch Chunk, PA; a second son Henry Curran was born in 1870 in Mauch Chunk, PA in April.

Again they dissappear. James H. Curran Shows up in Wilkes Barre, Pa and according to his obit they moved there when he was 12 so that would be about 1880. He shows up in the 1890's as a rail road brakeman. He shows up in 1900 in the US federal census as having a wife Amelia and 3 children, George, Margaret and Louise.

He stays in that area with a no post for the 1920 census. He dies in 1835.

Does this help you?

Currans of Ireland/Lancashire...

I am trying to trace any Curran descendants from either Ireland or Lancashire. I believe they came from County Clare but this is not definate by any means it is what has been past down the generations. What I do know is that they first appear on the 1861 census living in Preston, Lancashire. After some pain staking research I have just about pieced together the families movements via the census until 1901. I would love to hear from any descendants of the Currans in Preston as well as Ireland. The head of the family were Thomas and Catherine Curran and their Grandaughter Mary Curran was my Great Great Grandmother. If anyone can help I would love to hear from you.

Chris

Curran family from Hexham

Trying to find out some info about 2 brothers, Charles and Miles Curran. They were born in Framwellgate, Durham in 1889 and 1887 respectively. Their mother, Margaret (nee Walsh) moved them and their siblings Margaret, Philip and Joseph to Oakwood nr Hexham, Northumberland sometime bewteen 1901 and 1918.

I know about the other 3, but have no idea what became of Charles and Miles. I know that in 1917 Charles married Mary Monica Shorling at St. Godrics, Framwellgate and in 1918 he was serving the the Army Service Corps in WW1. Miles was not serving in the Army. There was a family story that one of them went to London and ended up down-and-out, but that might be a red herring.

Thanks
