I believe your grandfather was my grand uncle. My grandfather was George Henry, his older brother. About all I have found is their father Joseph F which I am assuming would be Sr. Other than from a 1900 census their grandfather was from Scotland I haven't been able to find out anything else as of yet.

Regards
Brion

Joseph F Curren

I am looking for information on the father of my great grandfather Joseph F. Curren (b1873 New York state, d1938 Elmira, New York). I can not find anything prior to him in a 1900 census. I do know from the census that this gentleman was born in Scotland but that is about it. I have no idea if there were siblings or not but I am guessing there were.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I found a Alice Knight in the 1880 Census with Peter Curren and Elizabeth Coward/Cowart in Jefferson County, Alabama.
It shows she is a niece. I know I found a sister of Peter's in the 1860 and 1870 census with either a mother or another sister of his. Not sure if Alice is a niece of Peter or Elizabeth. Did you know anything about it when you researched the family?
Thanks so much
Melissa

Hello Nancy,
I am researching a fellow named J.D. Curren, who was a painter (artist). We have just received a donation of one of his paintings at our Museum (Britannia Mine Museum). I was led to believe he worked at the Britannia Mine. The painting is dated 1909 and he was apparently in the management here around that time. If this could be the same John that is related to your family, I would love to have further information on him and a photo if possible - especially relating to the time he spent at Britannia Beach B.C. I do know that he lived in Alberta at some point. Please contact me one way or the other to confirm whether I am on the right track.
Regards,
~ Jane Iverson
Assistant Curator
Britannia Mine Museum

Hi! Ed Curren was my GrandDad and your Grandparents were my aunt and uncle. Mary Ruth was a sweet woman & my Dad's sister. My Dad was Forrist Curren and he passed away in 2006 and there are still a few of the family members alive. My Mom is 86 and she would be able to provide lot's of information about the Curren family. Our Great Grandmother, mother of Ed Curren, was a full blooded Deleware Indian & she was stolen from her tribe by English settlers and was their house slave until she was old enough to marry Marion Curren, an attorney & horse man who had migrated from Ireland. Eddie Curren is my Dad's brother & he lives outside of Marion, Ohio.

Eddie Curren (obit) age 14 d: 1883 son of James formerly of Nickerson, Reno Co, KS

Eddie Curren Accidentally Killed

We are under obligations to J. F. Tuttle for copies of the Raton Independt giving an account of the death of Eddie curren on a ranch near that place on Friday last. From the evidence taken it appears that the Curren boy slept in a room with three other boys Thursday night. At the head of bed stood an old musket, loaded with shot, which the Curren boy had brought from Murphy’s ranch, where he had been employed. In the morning the other lads got up and dressed and went out of the cabin. Soon after they heard the report of a gun, and one of them went to see what had happened. He found Eddie Curren lying on the bed with the top of his head blown off. From the circumstances attending this sad affair it woud seem that the deceased had partly raised himself in bed and reached for the gun. In pulling it toward himself the hammer probably caught on the bed and falling on the cap exploded the charge with the above result.

Eddie was about 14 years of age and the youngest son of James Curren, formerly of this city.

The Nickerson Argosy
Nickerson, Reno County, Kansas
Wednesday, September 5, 1883
page – 2 *** column – 2

<
<

Hi Nancy
I think we hit the jackpot. I talked to my father and he said that we are definately related to the Whyte family so we are all connected somehow. I don't have any other information but would love to know more. I know that my dad's mother had two sisters that lived in Vancouver one named Doreen and one named Kay I think. This is going way back, way before our time. I was born in 1960.
If you have anymore info let me know.
Thanks Shelley

Irish Curran/Curren family in Durham, England

My maternal grandfather was Anthony Curren & having recently been tracing that side of the family back I now know that his family were Curran, originating from Ireland (although still unclear what part, but possibly Tyrone).
It was my gg-grandfather, James (b. c1850;?Tyrone, Ireland) who came over, probably with his 1st wife, Annie McVay to work in the mines in & around Durham. His first son (also James) was born here c1876, in West Cornforth, Durham. He had 2 more children (Mary; 1879, West Cornforth & Roseanna; 1881, Broom, Bearpark, Durham) but then sadly Annie died in about 1884.
James remarried to Margaret Walsh (b.1859; Framwellgate, Durham) in 1886. They had 5 more children, including my g-grandfather, Charles Augustine Curran.
James' father was Patrick, according to his marriage cert. but thats the only info I have about him.
Hi Shelley, this sounds very interesting. Do you know the name of your John Donaldson Curren's parents? My John would be about the right age to be your John's father.
My John (born 1852 in Scotland) came to Canada (from Scotland) in 1886 as the widow of Katharine Dunnigan. With him it is noted were his daughter Annie, and a son who I have no name for. I have always thought that the son would probably have been named John, but have no proof of this.
I believe that my John may have been widowed at least twice, but that is also information I am looking into.
My John came to Alberta and settled in Anthracite and Banff where he is buried. If you think that they are connected, the Whyte museum is where all his papers and personal property is now kept (except for what I have that came down to me from my Grandfather).
My John Donaldson Curren was the Grandfather of Peter Whyte (founder, along with his wife Catherine, of the Whyte Museum of the Rockies in Banff). I was there about a month ago and the family display is up as part of the anniversary of Peter and Catherine's life and Death. I would be curious to know if your John Donaldson Curren is the missing son that I had assumed must have died as a child.
As far as I know My John never lived or even travelled to Vancouver, but then, I never knew a lot about Great Uncle John it would seem. For someone that was spoken about a lot in my Grandfather's family, no one ever spoke about the fact that he even had a family.....I had thought he was a bachelor. You can imagine my surprise!!!
Nancy

Here is some information on John Donaldson Curren.
John Donaldson Curren was born in 1880 in Scotland. He was father to Eleanor Curren Nelles, Grandfather to Larry Nelles and Great Grandfather to Shelley and Doug.
He was a warden in Yellowhead at Jasper National Park. He retired from the National park and moved to Vancouver. Retired for 14 days then got a job working for a foundry under the Barrard inlet bridge until his death.
Larry remembers his grandfather visiting him in the 1940's in Glacier, BC.
He was credited with finding the punchbowl falls in Jasper Park. He found a pocket watch in the mud which told him he wasn't the first white man to discover the area but he did recieve credit for this find.
He came to Canada from Scotland together with Jim Simpson who was famous for shooting the largest Rocky mountain Ram ever.
Looking for any connections to my Grandfather's Uncle John Donaldson Curren. He came to Canada as a widow in 1886 from Scotland. His Daughter Annie, married David White in or around the Banff, Alberta area. Annie and David's son Peter married Catherine Robb. At some point the latter altered the spelling of their last name to Whyte. He was very special to my Grandfather, I'd really like to know more about him.
Nancy

Hi Cheryl,

I am responding to an old post but figured I'd give it a shot. I was looking for information on Elizabeth Ellen Curren who was born in Co. Cork, Ireland in November 1860. She would be my gggrandmother. The only thing that I know at the moment is that she married Robert Beatty (ie).

Have you found anything further for her? Would love to hear from you if you have.

Curren - MA > CA in the late 1800's

I'm looking for information on the family of an Annie/Mina Curren/Curran (b. Abt. 1853 in Massachusetts) who migrated to Calaveras Co., California as of at least 1870. I am unsure as to whether she came to California with her family or alone.

On the 1870 Calaveras Co., California census, Annie Curren is shown as living in the household of a John and Teresa Moran. Teresa was 24 at the time the census was taken and she was born in Massachusetts. Annie was 17 at this time and also born in Massachusetts. Teresa's husband, John Moran, was 40 years old and born in Ireland. It is likely that Teresa was Annie Curren's sister, thus Teresa's maiden name would also have been Curren. It is also likely that Annie Curren left Massachusetts alone and came to California to live with her sister and brother-in-law because if her parents were either alive or had also come to California, she would most likely have been living with them at the age of 17 in 1870 since she was not yet married. John and Teresa Moran had one daughter, Catherine (b. Abt. 1863) as of the 1870 CA census.

If anyone has any information on these two (probable) Curren sisters, Teresa (b. Abt. 1846 in Mass.) and Annie (b. Abt. 1853 in Mass.) I would love to share and compare info with you. Annie Curren was my GGGgrandmother. She married James McQuig on 15 Jan 1871 in Calaveras Co., CA.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Maureen Kelley
GeneaJunkie@hotmail.com
