Christine,
Gene Nowak is correct. James Currens (1760?-1852 )married twice. Sarah (Sally) MacAfee on Nov. 29, 1791. Their children were William and Anne. Later he married Margaret McCoun, Sarahs' cousin. Their children were Sally, James S., Robert, Harrison, and Elizabeth.
I gathered most of my information from origional sources but a significant % was provided by Gene Nowak and Jane Norman

Thanks for the update on Frank Currens. The tree you referenced was updated in 9 Oct 2004. In that post you will find that the mother of James S. Currens was Margaret McCoun. If you click on my name in this posting you will be given a list of my postings. All the McCoun postings were efforts to establish the mother of James Currens children.

James S. Currens - KY

The 1810 census for Mercer co, KY lists the following families:

Leister Jesse 2-0-0-1-0 0-1-0-1-0 320
Licester John 0-0-0-1-0 1-2-1-1-0 319
Licester Peter 2-2-0-0-1 1-3-2-0-1 318
Lister Elias 2-0-0-1-0 3-0-0-1-0 318

James S. Currens married Elizabeth Lickester May 16, 1822 in Mercer Co, KY. The last name is what the writer tranlated it to. Which I assume is probably one of the above families. What spelling of the surname did most of them they finally agree on?

The bondsman was David Liechlyter according to Marriage bonds and Consents 1811-1830 of Mercer Co, Ky compiled by Alma Ray Sanderson and Rebecca Wilson Conover. The same publication has numerous references to David Lyyster, Lyster, Lester and Lister which would lead me to believe that her maiden name would more properly be spelt Lyster, Lister or Lester. Any thoughts anyone?

Lyster, Peter born May 31, 1761 died Jan 5, 1830 married in 1784
(Source Mud Meeting House Cemetery listing on line.)

Is he the same as Peter Licester listed in the 1810 census?

Gene

Currens the first ( I'm the second )
and was born on leap year 1896. His brothers and sisters were Charlie, Pal, Commie, and Mabel. I also remember visiting Carlie Gilbert as a child in Richmond Indiana.

I have also traced a Craig Currens from Denver Co. whose roots run from Harrodsburg. The story goes that at one time,
the Currens family owned a lot of property in and around there.
But the offspring squandered it thriugh in fighting etc.

Feel free to give me a call some time and I let you know anything I can recollect from our family.

Rob Currens
513 651 5375 w
513 533 1344 h

Currens/Current Family Name

Hello Cousin-
While I cannot say as an established fact, it does seem to me only reasonable that Current and Currens would be variations of the root or original name which is Curran. The name is Irish. The variations of which I am certain include: Curran; Currans; Currens; Curren; Currence; and it would appear now that Current is also a derivation. Have you tried entering Current in the Codex to see what alternates you find? My last name is Dunlap and their are two very common ways it is spelled, the Original Scottish way--with an "o"--and another equally Scottish manner--with an "a." However, Delap (you have read that correctly) is also a variation found for the Dunlop/Dunlap name per codex and by history.

Good luck in your research.

Bruce Dunlap

James Currens, early Kentucky settler

Hello all descendents of the Currens family of Harrodsburg Kentucky. I am seeking information on James Currens, who came to Kentucky from some where in Maryland, and settled at Salvisa Ky, near Harrodsburg, around 1790. He was born about 1760, married Sarah McAfee, daughter of Robert McAfee, in 1791, and died in 1850. My ancestors are their son Harrison (m.Ann Alsop), his son David T. (m. Melinda Shackelford), his son Lewis H. (m. Prince Egbert), his son Guy (m. Ethel Crowder), and his son, my father, Maurice Guy Currens (m. Joyce Olson).
Bruce Dunlap, who has posted previous inquiries, is my first cousin through Mary Ethel Currens Dunlap, daughter of Guy and Ethel.
Thanks for your kind attention to this post.

Currens of Kentucky 1775 -->

You probably know this better than I, but it may help to search also under Curran and Currans. My mother is a Currens. She is from Central Kentucky. Her mother was a Crowder. My Currens family dates back (roughly!) to about 1775 in Kentucky, especially the Mercer County area. However, I am not the Currens genealogist for my particular ilk and don't know a great deal about them other than names and some dates.
Sorry if I have wasted your time.
Bruce Dunlap
South Carolina

Joseph Addason Currens b. 1838

My ggrandfather, Joseph Walter Currens, came to Dallas,
TX. with his family in 1901. He was born in Burnside, Illinois
5/7/1875. I think the family moved from the Colchester, Illinois area or at least there were a number of relatives who resided there. His father was Joseph Addason Currens, my
gggrandfather, who was a general merchandise store owner in that area. Joseph A. Currens was born in 1838 and was originally from the Gettysburg, PA. area. He was married to Sarah Margaret (Stark) Currens, born in Missouri (1842).
Any help on Joseph A. and his family would be greatly appreciated!

Jay: William and Sarah's daughter Ida, born November 1880, is my mother's mother. My grandmother. So, I guess William and Sarah would be my GrGrandparents! And yes, I would love more information. You can email me at robcorden@attbi.com.
Funny you should mention Flohr's Cemetery. My GrGrGrandfather, Daniel Kuhn, married Mary Matilda Flohr. Ida married into the Kuhn Family. I think they are buried there as well.

Robert Denning

Currens/Current connection

I have reason to believe the Current and Currens name are connected, at least in Ontario Canada during early to mid 1850's. Anyone else find that to be a possibility?
