birthplace confusion: William Curry m. Elizabeth Moore

William Curry married Elizabeth Moore. They lived in Wilkes County, North Carolina and had 10 children:

(I don't think all of these dates are correct. They are approximations.)

1. George Curry, ~1789 (married Elizabeth Gray)
2. Mary Curry, ~1792 (married George Johnson)
3. Samuel Curry, ~1792 (married Annie Shew)
4. Priscilla Curry, ~1793 (married John Gregory, Samuel Chambers)
5. Sarah Curry, ~1794 (married Charles Cargile)
6. Nancy Curry, ~1795 (married Daniel Hart)
7. Rachel Curry, ~1798 (married William Gray)
8. Rebecca Curry, ~1802 (married Robert Anderson)
9. Elizabeth Curry, ~1803 (married Thomas Gray)
10. Malinda Curry, ~1804 (married James Gregory)

There seems to be confusion about William Curry's place of birth. Some researchers have listed William's place of birth as North Carolina. Other researchers have listed his place of birth as Pennsylvania.

It has been reported that the 1850 census for Wilkes County, North Carolina lists William's age as 86 (thus born ~1764) and his place of birth as Pennsylvania. I have not seen this census record myself so I cannot confirm this.

It is clear that this Curry family was in Wilkes County, North Carolina by 1790 but where they were 26 years before that time is still a mystery. Can anyone help clarify this?

John Curry, 1790 Wilkes Co., NC

Seeking information on the John Curry listed in the 1790 Wilkes County, North Carolina census. His household is listed as follows.

Morgan District, Wilkes County, Second Company
Page 120

Jno. Curry 1 3 5 .. ..

1 male 16 years upwards (this would be John Curry)
3 males under 16 years (probably 3 sons born between 1774 and 1790)
5 females (this is probably his wife and possibly 4 daughters)

This John Curry is probably a brother or possibly the father of the William Curry who married Elizabeth Moore. In the 1850 census for Wilkes County, North Carolina, William Curry is listed with an age of 86 (born about 1764) and place of birth as Pennsylvania.

Searching for the ancestors of Margaret CURRY born 1834 in Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence County, NY, and died July 12, 1894 in Port Hope, Canada. She married James OLIVER abt. 1855.
Looking for Sister and Biological Mother

I was born in Phoenix Az. January 5, 1970 to Judith Ann Curry. My last name at the time I was born was Rogers. I have been told I have a sister but all I know about her is her first and middle name. Rebecca Ann or possibly Rebecca Sue. Her last name could have been Curry or Rogers in 1970. My brother(who has passed away) his last name was Baughman. She married his father Jimmie Ray Baughman December 7, 1970 in Phoenix Az. All three of us were put up for adoption between 1973 and 1974. Rebecca was adopted by a Baptist minister from Alton Mo. My brother Jimmie and I were adopted together in 1975. I posted a message back in 2001 searching for Judith because my brother had a genetically linked heart condition. He has since passed away.
I would really like to find her and my sister or anyone related to her for that matter. Not to disrupt anyone's life but to find out more about my biological medical history. So if there is anyone out there with any information, It would be greatly appreciated. I have three sons. Unlike my brother who passed with out knowing the genetic link to his heart condition, I want my sons to know their genetic background that comes from me.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Patty Brooks-Rogers

I'm looking for information on the Curry family of Mahoning County, Ohio, particularly on Robert D. Curry(1885-1968) and his wife, Nila. They were my great grandparents. Her last name was most likely Lewis, but I'm not entirely sure about that. She died at a young age, 35 or 36 I think.

Robert's father was Nathan Franklin Curry, possibly known as Frank P. Curry and his mother was Mary Catherine Schroy(1852-1939).

Any info about their lives or deaths would be greatly appreciated.

Hi to all you cousins out there. I am wondering if anyone can help me with a few questions.

John CURRY was born in 1705 in Scotland. He died in 1750 in Ireland.
He had the following children:

M	i Robert CURRY 1 died UNKNOWN.
M	ii William CURRY 1 died UNKNOWN.
M	iii James CURRY
M	iv Ephraim CURRY , Sr.
I have that Ephraim Sr. was born 1755. How is that possible if his Dad died in 1750?

I also have it that Ephraim was from Portarington in Antrim County Ireland. The only Portarlington is in Laois County? (Alice) Elsea BOLTON was from Wexford County so it makes more sense that the Portarlington mentioned was in Laois. Does anyone have any info on this? I'm traveling to Ireland next month and very much would like to visit the town and possibly grave sights.

Thanks in advance,
Susan Curry (ggg granddaughter of John and Lucy Jones Curry)

There are two Curry families in Ireland. One Curry originated in Ulster and has been discussed earlier in the thread. The other (originally O Comhraidhe anglicized to O'Curry then Curry) is smaller and from Clare(actually Thomond in pre-Norman era).

That which originated in Ulster has three main colors (black, red, and gold). That which originated in Clare has two main color(blue and gold).

Also note, the Scottish (Currie and other non-Irish derivitives) have a gray and red version.

On a separate note, you may want to verify the info on Cobh. It was a major port of departure and is often mistaken over time as one's ancestral hometown.

-Ryan Curry (descendent of Thomas Curry who immigrated to West Quincy, Massachusetts from County Clare)

According to the MacPherson Clan, they had to go to Ireland one time to get a Curry to head up the clan. I believe it was several hundred years ago. There may also have been Curry's that married into other clans along the way and that's why there's some discrepancy about the origins of the Clan.

The Curry's are part of Clan Macpherson in Scotland. Our crest is a sitting wildcat proper, meaning on it's hind legs and our motto is "Touch not the Cat without a Glove." The Clan name appears to derive from "Son of the Parson" and indicates that the Founder of the Clan was a Churchman. The Clan shares its origins with Clan Mackintosh and forms part of the Clan Chattan or Cat Confederation. The Chiefship is vested MacPherson of Cluny.

There are many Scots that moved to Ireland and kept themselves separate from the Irish. My "Irish" Curry ancestor was, in fact, Scottish.

Kriste

Our family heritage also traces back to an Adam Curry born in 1752 who immigrated to America with two brothers around 1770. But, our oral history was always that he came from Scotland. I did find a link that talked of his parents and where they were married, but then the trail goes cold. Probably the same person, but maybe I've been looking in wrong country if you are sure he was from Ireland.

Why does everybody assume there is a family crest? Not everyone had one; only nobility, contrary to what sone of the websites out there try to tell you. Family crests originated in the Middle Ages in order to identify a man in battle. It was worn on his shield. They were awarded later by the College of Heraldry for meritorous service.

The information is as follows:

Ledanis Duane Curry born April 25, 1860
Emma Curry born September 25, 1863
Thadeious Curry born November 10, 1865
Charles Curry born September 28, 1867
Victoria Curry “mold growing over date”
Nancy Jane Curry “mold growing over date”
Benjamin Curry born September “mold growing over date”
Texanna Curry born May 6, 1879

The document is in very poor condition with mold growing in many parts. It was hard to get a good transcription of the names. Attached are two photos.
this is really strange, but I also am looking for info on Sara Emily Curry married to Lloyd jesse Curry. I cannot find her maiden name anywhere. I believe she also went by the name Emily. The only thing is that she was supposedly born in 1889. I have found her death record but it doesn't mention her maiden name. I don't know if this is from the same family or not but thought I'd give it a try. Thanks, Marcy

Hi.... Hopefully this makes it to you four years after your post! I have the same Adam Curry in my heritage. I had that he was born in Scotland, but I don't have that as concrete, and had run into block walls, so maybe if I found he was born in Ireland it might open some doors. Anyway, I don't have anything specific on Phoebe Hickman, but I have a marriage date of 13 Mar 1797 in Rockingham County, VA. I have children John M (my ancestor), Elizabeth, Joseph, Andrew and James. I'll email the address on your post too. Please get back to me and let me know if you have found anything else. Take Care.

Blake Curry

Hi Allen,

I think we've got a match! My ancestor is Adam Curry, born in 1752 (I have no record of where in Scotland or when he came over). I do have that His spouse was Phoebe Hickman (married 3/13/1797 in Rockingham County, VA) and he died in 1857 in Highland County, VA. Sound like the same guy? Mine has children listed as John M (Bn 1798), Elizabeth, Joseph (Bn 1802), Andrew (Bn 1803) and James (Bn 1809). John M. is my GGG grandfather. If its the same Adam, I'd love to hear more because that's all I've been able to dig up on him. Good day!

Blake Curry

found this in Curtis Thomas "Al Clippings" on the Cross family
William and Nancy are both buried in the primitive Curry-Cross Cemetery, located deep in the woods in the northern section of Covington County. Their graves were marked with large red stones, and it is believed that William was the first person to be buried in the cemetery. There are only one or two commercial headstones in the small cemetery.
I wouldn't go with any of it. My father in law is doing that side right now and he isn't one for sharing. I would take anything from that and double check it all. Sorry for all the trouble.
