My name is Scott Kurt. My father William L. Kurt was raised in Cascade, Iowa. His father was Leo Kurt a son of Peter Kurt. Leo's wife my grandma was Hilda Manternach. Peter Kurt was my great grandfather. I am sorry for not posting what I have learned about my/our families genealogy. I started researching in the late 80's and hired a professional researcher in the early 90's. I hope this will give you the "o-wow" feeling I had when I found out more? !
To answer some of the items from these threads, here is some of what I know: (I have copies of the documents this information comes from) (and pictures of Peter Kurt and his family) and the Peter Kurt farm. I also have a small picture of John B. Kurt and his wife Anna Ternes/Turnis. The names are often misspelled in the records. The Kurt name was originally spelled Kurth in the records from Luxembourg. I think they dropped the "H" when they got to the U.S. because it is silent anyway? After doing much of the research I went to Cascade with my dad and found the family buried in one neat line at St. Mary's cemetery. It would have saved me so much work if I'd went there first. ;-)! One of the stain glass windows in the St. Mary's church was paid for by John B. Kurt and Anna Turnis. It has an inscription below it. The Luxemburg Gazzette Obituary is translated: "On Monday, the 4th of this month, John B. Kurt died suddenly at Cascade. The same was born at Hesperingen, emigrated to the United States in 1952, came directly to Iowa and settled in Cascade Township, Dubuque Co., Iowa. Kurt leaves a grieving widow and eleven children, 7 boys and 4 girls in good circumstances. Kurt was an industrious, thrifty man. His mortal remains were buried in the community's cemetery. May he rest in peace! "
I also found an obituary from an english language Cascade paper from the time. It goes into a little more detail. Too long to write here. I have many newspaper articles collected by my great aunt Katherine Muller. She gave me a folder with a brief genealogy to get me started and a large folder with family newspaper clipping copies from the 1940's? onwards. Some of your family members are probably in them. Here's a short Kurt(h) side family tree. Brief branches were listed from other related families in the research. Peter Kurt (spouse Mary Hosch) Born 3 July 1872, marr. 22 Sep 1895. died 8 July 1939.
