My records only show Rev. Gustavus Curtiss and that his parents were English/Scotch and lived in Upper Michigan. Do not know who foster parents were. It's possible that he is of the Stratford line of Curtisses (John Curtiss/Elizabeth Hutchins who came from Nazeing, Eng. around 1637 and settled permanently in Stratford, CN.)
Did you know there is a town called Curtis in Upper Michigan? Glenn Curtiss always insisted there be 2 "s's" on his last name. If you get further information, please share.
If you spell Lua's name Andres do you have anything to back up that spelling as it should be Andrews. However, maybe you have documentation on this. That isn't genealogically easy family either. Thanks, Carol W. Dudley

That info helped me a lot. I hope I am well enough soon to try and find more pieces to this puzzle. I am really stumped when it comes to grandmother Curtiss. I think Kelly may have been the only one who remebered her name at the time of her marriage to Grandaddy Curtiss. I wish I could locate our fathers half siblings she left in California. Maybe some of your siblings have some info. I am going to get with my oldest sister first chance we have to locate pictures and pick her memory. She lives in Lubbock, Texas and I live in Pueblo, Colorado but we are planning on meeting at our sister's house in Texhoma as soon as I can travel. I will insist she bring all her pictures and at least most of her mind! Stay in touch and I will get exact dates from the headstones in Texhoma. Where was Uncle Cleo buried and what were his birth and death years? God Bless and take care. Looking forward to your next email. Sincerely, LaJuana

My oldest sister, Imogene King, was in contact with your father via email, but has not recived a response in quite a while and she was wondering if she has the most current address. Also all of us would appreciate any names, dates, pics etc., you can provide. Kelly had sent me an email with the name of Hattie at the time of her marriage to Oscar but it was misplaced. If you have any info I would love to have it and I will share anything I am able to discover. My email is curtissnina@yahoo.com.
Frank P. Curtis, Auburn, NY

FRANK P. CURTIS. Alaska Gold Rush Letters; n.d., 1900-1902. .1 cu. ft.

Frank P. Curtis was from Auburn, New York. He participated in the Alaska Gold Rush of 1898, and had a gold claim and mine at King Solomon Hill near Dawson, Yukon Territory, Canada.

The collection consists of three handwritten Alaska Gold Rush era letters and two postmarked envelopes by gold miner Frank P. Curtis to his wife in New York. The first letter, a portion of a single page with writing on both sides, was written from Chicago, Illinois, on Curtis's train trip from Auburn, New York to Seattle, Washington. The second letter, pages three and four of a multi-page letter, appears to be from Curtis on his way north to Dawson, and comments on the purchase of supplies and clothing. The last letter, written from King Solomon Hill on July 20, 1901, is two pages long. In the letter, Curtis comments on work at the mine, coming home in the fall, purchasing a pony for his son Floyd, an offer to buy his claim, and the status of a lawsuit that had been ruled in his favor. The first envelope is addressed to his wife in Fleming, New York, postmarked from Dawson on March 13, 1900, and also from the towns of Fleming and Auburn, New York on April 5, 1900. The second envelope is addressed to his wife, Mary B. Curtis in Auburn, postmarked from Dawson on July 21, 1902, and from Auburn, New York on August 5, 1902.

http://consortiumlibrary.org/archives/CollectionsList/Collec...

I am seeking any info for Jerome Curtiss, born 1787 or 1788, either in Pennsylvania or New York. He passed away in New York and his children were

1. Daniel S. Curtiss, b. 1814

2. Hiram Curtiss, b. 1816

3. Lyman Curtiss, b. 1818

4. Jerome L. Curtiss, 1820-1865

5. Clarisa J. Curtiss, b. 1822

6. Ambrose B. Curtiss, b. 1834

7. Son born 1827

8. Daughter born 1828

Jerome is my husband's 3rd Great-Grandfather and the family history we have is very limited. The line that is direct to my husband is as follows:

Jerome Curtiss & Nancy (?)
Jerome L. Curtiss & Hannah M. Richmond
Wilmer J. Curtiss & Ruth L. Sturgis
Gordon D. Curtis & Hila L. Conner
Wanda Jean Curtis & Edward Charles Robison (husband's parents, both deceased)

Wanda was my husband's mother, she was born 1945 and passed away in 2002. We have information for all of her siblings and half-siblings. I am looking for all sibling info, as well as trying to trace the line back as far as possible. Would also appreciate any photographs that anyone may have of people or of headstones. We will gladly share all info that we have in return. Thanks so much! :)

There is an Alfred N. Curtis who moved from Washington Co, NY to Meadville, Crawford Co. PA before 1824 according to the town history. It seem that a number of families left Washington Co, NY and may have traveled together including the Samuel HATCH family. I am trying to find the children of this Alfred N. Curtis. I believe his family is connected to the WAID (Wade) OAKS (Oakes) families in Meadville.
There were 3 Joel Curtis in the area at the same time.
One was the son of Ethan and Elizabeth Warner Curtis, he was born 30 Apr 1796.He married Sally Hulet.
One was born Oct. 6, 1793. Was from the Hose Curtis line. He married Sally Shaw they lived in New York,
One was the son of Lines Curtis and Peggy Peek He married and moved to Penn.

There has been a lot on the Internet where these three are confused and you will find some people have the one in New York dyeing April 6, 1845 Parma, Cuyahoga, Ohio. and some have the one who lived in Penn. dyeing on the same date,
It would appear you may haave picked up on some of the conflicting stuff and we need clarification as to which Joel you are really looking for.

Jody
I looked up your Edward and found this.
Edward L. Curtiss b. 27 Sept 1845 in Concord, Champaign, Ohio d. 6 Dec 1909 Concord, Champaign, Ohio
Wife Cynthia Beach b. 1852 Children:
Dellie (son) b 1872
Henri Lamar b.1876-1941
John b. 1877
James b. 1879
It list his siblings as:
George Riley 1850-1936
Lucy b.1852
Adison b.1854
Linda b.1856
Clinton b.1859

I know it shows Edward as 1845 birth and Adison as 1854. Not totally impossible if Adison was born January or so. My grandmother was born in Dec. and her brother was born in Feb of the same year. They had them fast back then.
I have all of Edwards linage from his father on back and I'm including a couple of attachments of the linage from Levi on back. Now it stops at Benjamin but I have from Benjamin back also. So you linage goes like this.
Edward, Levi, Lewis, William, Stephen, Jonathan, Benjamin, John, Widow Elizabeth. I am also from Widow Elizabeth, William, John's brother. Widow Elizabeth had three sons, John,William and Thomas. Thomas died around 1776. I have so much information on all your Curtiss ancestors. I have the Curtis/Curtiss Genealogy books. I just couldn't find your Edward or Levi on there but did find them on a Family Tree on Ancestry.com. Does this help? Kathy

Re: curtis family

Charles Curtis, 82; Businessman Brought Big Chair to Anacostia

By Yvonne Shinhoster Lamb
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, May 3, 2007; B07

Charles Wendell Curtis, the man who brought the 19 1/2 -foot-high mahogany chair to Anacostia in 1959 and created a lasting landmark, has died. He was 82.

Mr. Curtis, who died March 29 at Suburban Hospital of a heart attack after a fall, initially was looking for a way to lure customers into his family's furniture showroom at what is now V Street and Martin Luther King Avenue SE. He commissioned Bassett Furniture Industries in North Carolina to build the 4,600-pound version of a Duncan Phyfe dining room chair and had it delivered on a flatbed truck.

Touted as the "the world's largest chair," the hefty seat immediately became a neighborhood attraction. A young woman spent 42 days atop the chair in a glass booth with a balcony. A larger-than-life Santa Claus perched there and waved to passersby. The chair survived the 1968 riots unscathed, and when weather took its toll, it was rebuilt, this time from aluminum.

In March 2006, Mr. Curtis watched as the rebuilt chair was unveiled. He recalled that no matter how the neighborhood changed, the chair endured, in part because the community was attached to it.

"No one laid a hand on the chair" during the riots, he told The Washington Post. "They had respect for it."

"And it will stay there for 100 years," he added.

A Washington native, Mr. Curtis had long ties to Southeast Washington, where his family's furniture business opened in 1926. He attended elementary school there and graduated from Anacostia High School in 1942. During World War II, he became a pilot in the Army Air Forces, and he remained in the Air Force Reserve for 10 years.

He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland in 1949 and spent a year at Georgetown University law school.

After graduating from college, he joined Curtis Bros. Furniture as a sales manager and rose to general manager before serving as president. In the early 1960s, he spent a year as national advertising manager for Kroehler Manufacturing Co. He was national merchandising manager at Simmons Co. from 1974 to 1983, when he retired.

Always looking for ways to promote the family business, Mr. Curtis decided in 1960 to have a 10-by-10-foot glass booth built and placed on the big chair. He hired a 19-year-old woman to live there.

"Every few hours she would slip out onto the balcony to wave to crowds drawn by newspaper and radio ads that invited them to see 'Alice in the "Looking Glass" House' and guess how long she could remain up there," The Post reported.

Mr. Curtis, a resident of Brandywine for 62 years before moving to Leesburg last year, was involved in civic activities. He was area chairman of the Greater Washington Chapter of the Leukemia Society of America, director of the German Orphan Home, president of the Anacostia Lions Club, vice president and director of the National Home Furnishings Association, director of the Franklin Savings & Loan Association in Washington and a member of the retail committee of the Greater Washington Board of Trade.

His marriage to Dorothy McLean Curtis ended in divorce.

Survivors include his wife, Hilda F. Curtis of Leesburg; six children from his first marriage, Pamela Rizzo of Fort Washington, Carol Lee Curtis of Vail, Colo., Barbara Jedrey of Davidsonville, Md., Charles W. Curtis Jr. of Severna Park, Robert Curtis of Denver and Rena I. Curtis of Leesburg; two stepchildren, Sherrie Everett of McLean and John P. Everett III of Springfield; a sister, Patricia Brooks of New Carrollton; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Found this on a website, hope it helps, Kathy C-G

Re: Stratford CT Curtis

Okay, here we go!
Rueben Curtiss (Samuel,Daniel,Abner, Joseph, Thomas, John, Widow Elizabeth) Married. Eliza Malone. Children:
George
Jennie
Eliza

Samuel Curtiss (Daniel, Abner, Joseph, Thomas,John, Widow Elizabeth) b. Dec. 16, 1773 in Farmington, Conn. The revolutionary war papers of his father, Daniel, reveal that Daniel's bible was burned at the time of his son Samuel's house burned in Luzerne, Warren Co.,N.Y. But in the affidavit of Daniel's son Daniel, Jr. of Belpre, Washington Co., Ohio made in 1838, Samuel was residing in Washington Co.,N.Y. Land and probate records of Warren Co. and Washington Co. N.Y. fail to reveal this Samuel Curtis but a thorough search of church and cemetery records might produce a record of him. His living descendants have furnished a rather complete record of him but lacking dates. His wife, they say, was Chloe. The births of some of the children have been ascertained by census records so they cannot be put down in order of birth.
Levi b.? M. Eunice named after Levi Andrews, brother of Mary Andrews the mother of Samuel
Phineas b.? m. Dec. 19, 1833 at Rupert, Vt Lucinda Darling. Phineas named after Daniel's brother who d. in infancy.
Moses b? d. unmarried.
Samuel b. 1812 M. Eliza Harding or Harden
Daniel b.? m. Betsey Schermerhorn
Janes b. 1820 m. Ruth Buell
Reuben b.? m. Eliza Malone. Named after Reuben Andrews.
Mary b? d. unmarried.
Joel b. 1803 M. Hannah Sharpe
All who married will be considered later. They alllived in or near Greenwich, Washington Co.,N.Y. There is at present no record of Daniel brother of Samuel.
I can do Abner, Joseph, Thomas, John, and Widow Elizabeth if you would like. I hope this has helped. Kathy C-G

Re: Information on Henry E. Curtiss

I found a 1910 census on Henry E. Curtis.
he was 71 then. Birth year abt 1839. Birthplace: New York
Father's Birthplace: Ct Mother's Birthplace: Mass
Spouse's Name: Anetta
Home in 1910: White Oak, Franklin, Arkansas
Children are listed as:
Emma Curtis age 13
Charles Curtis age 11
Orville Curtis age 8
Daniel Curtis age 10 months

I did find a member family tree that said Henry E. was married to a Lucy A. ? Born 1837. How true that is I don't know. I can get you their email address if you would like. Does this help? Also, I have the Curtis/Curtiss Genealogy books and I could not find your Henry E. in them or Orville. Try the Curtiss website at Curtis-Curtiss.com. You might also want to join the Curtis/Curtiss Society. We are having a Curtis/Curtiss reunion in Grand Rapids, Michigan in Oct. Info on website. You can post a Query on the website to Art Hutchinson. He can post it in the Newsletter and maybe someone else will have more info for you.
Happy Hunting, Kathy C-G

I am looking for Joel and Sally Curtiss, this is the information that I have on them. Joel was born 6 Oct 1793 in Wallingford, Ct. Some websites have that he was born in Lee, Berkshire, Mass but I'm sure it is Ct. He married Sally Hulet (born 2 Jan 1799 in Lee, Berkashire, Mass), they married on 18 Sept 1817 in Brunswick, Portage, Ohio. He died 6 April 1845 in Parma, Ohio. She died 26 Dec 1877 in Ohio and was buried next to Joel. Any info will help, thanks Kathy

Thanks for checking further on Levi Curtiss. This information is what I have from a professional Curtis/s researcher. I've had information on the previous post, but it was determined that it was incorrect. I have the Curtiss book also, dated 1903. On what page did you find Levi. I've looked and looked.
Thank you so much.
Marylin Curtiss DeYoung
