Hi, I really hope you are checking this message board! I'm searching for the Curtner's of Southern Illinois. I descend from Duncan Curtner (b. about 1810 and d. 1856) and his wife Nancy. Their daughter Matilda (1848-1896) was first married to Pitts Sullivan (who was murdered by Matilda's brother Daniel) and secondly she married John Miller, from whom I descend. I would really like to find out more about the Curtner's and what happened to them after they left Southern Illinois.

Here's some information I found. Your John's father's middle name was also Valentine. I had been having trouble locating them in 1910, so I tried a search for Valentine and found them in Blaine Co Oklahoma.
Gary,
Yes yes!! Your wife's grandfather was the son of Edward V Curtner and Harriett Isabel Volner. I'm not exactly certain if Edward is correct. His name may have been Edgar instead.

John had 6 siblings Jane, Thomas Oliver, Zina, Alma Ellen, Marilla V, Martha B.

Harriett was the dtr of John Volner and Amanda Jane Murr, dtr of Jeremiah Murr and Rachel Click.

apparently the Volner's are part Cherokee.

visit my website
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~auntsissie/index.ht...

at the bottom of the page is another link to my original website Aunt Sissie's homeplace. By 1850 they were in Wisconsin. Clarissa was rumored to have two sisters: Emily married George Bast in 1821 and Elizabeth married Andrew Fritzlen in 1832. All marriages took place in Boyle Co. Jacob Curtner signed bond at Clarissa's marriage. Would like to find family of Clarissa--parents, siblings. Elizabether Ann Curtner, who was born Aug. 12, 1842, and who died Dec. 17, 1896, married George Madison True. The Trues are buried in Berry Cemetery near Toledo, Illinois.
My Great Grandfather was Ernest Curtner. His parents were John Curtner Sr., and Christina (spelling?). I was aware there was a John Curtner Jr., just because the information I have states Sr. after his name, but had no idea of any other brothers or sisters of Ernest, or their families. Ernest married Louisa Jane Etter. They had 8 children, Grace was the youngest. She married W.A. Beam, and they had 4 children, of which one was Blanche LaFaye Beam, my mother. All of which resided in Wise County, TX. Ernest b:abt 1848 in Mo or AR d:12/25/1893, Louisa Jane b: April 1851, d:April 9, 1931. both buried Anneville Cemetery, Wise Co. TX. I would greatly appreciate any information you can add of the Curtner Family, and any of the family of Christianna Smith. I am especially interested in the burial locations.
Hi Christopher!
What a beautiful name you have! This leads me to believe that we are probably not related, because none of us have great names!
I am from the greater Dayton, Ohio, area, where there are many Curtner families with no apparent connection. You don't say where your family lived. Do you know of any Ohio family? My dad was John Edward Curtner b.1911,d.1980, in Lewisburg, Ohio.
I have a book for references about my branch of Curtners. If you could give me a little more info, like state, other family names, I will read and see if there's any connection here, and let you know. I hope I may be of help to you! Sincerely, Debby Curtner-Dunham

Lonnie Prince Curtner

Hi Debby,
I, too, am a Debby Curtner at birth! I have lived in the greater Dayton, Ohio, area almost all my life. My grandfather was Owen Smith Curtner, who apparently died in the late 1890's. Our family was German/Dutch in origin, I believe. Apparently, the name was originally Goertner, or a similar name in Germany. I have a book supposedly about my branch of the Curtners that I haven't looked at in years. I remember that it had some inaccuracies that my aunt wasn't happy about. I know that all of Dad's family was very stubborn and "hard-headed"!
If you would like, I could look in the book to see if there's any family in Arkansas. I was surprised to see another Debby! I also had some distant cousin or something who's name was Debbie or Debby. I believe she lived in northern Ohio. I'd enjoy learning more about my family, so I think I'll get out the book. If I find any info pertinent to what might be your family, I'll send you another reply. Sincerely, Debby

Oscar Curtner

Kim, Hi! My name is Debby Curtner-Dunham. I saw your posting regarding an Oscar Curtner, Greenville, Ohio. My father had an Oscar Curtner somewhere in his family. I was raised in Miamisburg, Ohio, in southwestern Montgomery County about 10 miles sw of Dayton. Dad's family moved around Ohio when he was a kid because his father, Owen Smith Curtner, was a miller by trade. Owen had two wives, first wife second, I believe were both named Carrie. My grandmother, the second wife, was Carrie Earhart, a cousin of some type of Amelia Earhart. I seem to recall my dad, John Edward Curtner (1911-1980) talking about Oscar as an Uncle? I'm not positive on that, however. I have a book my aunt, Lelia Evelyn Curtner, gave me when she was still alive. It is supposedly a geneology listing for the Curtner family. We found many errors within this book, but also many relatives. In the area where I have spent most of my life, there are at least two other strains of Curtners. There are also some in Springboro to the south, and I did have some info years ago from a Thomas Curtner in Troy which is north of Dayton.
If you are interested, I would be glad to try to locate more info for you from the book. I haven't looked at it in years! Who knows? We may be related! I remember other cousins in New Philadelphia, Mansfield, Mt. Vernon, and the greater Cleveland area. My dad had two sisters and one brother, plus several half-siblings, so the gene pool should be rich!
Please let me know if you'd like more information. My husband is really into his geneology, so maybe it's time to check out my own! Feel free to contact me at debbydunham@c.s.com. Sincerely, Debby

Sherri, I have no information on your Curtner grandparents. I have traced my line of Curtners back to John Curtner (b:abt 1800, Kentucky, d:1875, Texas) and his wife Christianna Smith (b:abt 1807, Kentucky, d:1875, Texas). The next generation (my great grandparents) was John H. Curtner (b:11/26/1835, Montgomery Co., Missouri, d:11/21/1903, Chico, Wise Co., TX) who was married to Narcissus Byrd (b: 12/3/1844, Alabama or Mississippi, d: 11/3/1918, Frederick, Tillmam Co., OK).
