She's a very distant relation if any - she's the sister of Rolla Gardner, who married my grandmother's sister Winnie Herrold. My grand-aunt's sister in law is what the software says. I picked up that picture from the person who posted it. I've never been to that cemetery though I've been meaning to spend a weekend visiting cemeteries in that area sometime. That one is in Westville, IN, as I recall, where I often visited my grandmother's other sisters who still lived in the old Herrold family farmhouse when I was young. I believe they're in the same cemetery.

Looking for more information on the Hector Kurtz (Curts) family in Pickaway County, Ohio. My gggrandmother, Elisabeth Kurtz (1817-1843), seems to be the first born of Hector Kurtz and Sarah Pontious. I've identified other children: George, John, Samuel, Harriet, Henry, Eliza, and Margaret. Are there other children in this Washington Township family?

I found your post while looking for info about George Curts/Kurtz of Ohio, the father of the James Curts you're talking about. I have a record from "Indiana Deaths, 1882-1920" of Mary Vice having died 6 Dec 1904 in Kilmore, Clinton County, IN. I don't have any burial info. Is James buried in Ohio or in Indiana? And I don't suppose you have any more info about George...?

Hector married Sarah Margaret Pontious in 1813 in Pickaway County Ohio. Do you know Hector's father? I have some possible answers but I'm not sure.

Jay, the title of your post mentions Ohio but the rest of the message doesn't. I am a Curts in Indiana, which is the state that has the most Curtses by far, according to distribution maps I've seen. I've traced my Curts line back to a George Kurtz of Ohio. He was born around 1800 and the 1840 census has him living in Butler County, OH, with his wife and 10 children. Either he or the children changed the spelling to Curts (or maybe the census taker misspelled it), and several of the kids moved to Indiana, where they had a lot more kids. It's probable that most of the Curts's in Indiana today are descended from George. I haven't traced all of his descendants, but I know some of them moved to Missouri and Kansas. My family tree on Ancestry.com is called Curts/Goodwin if you'd like to browse it.

Our James was born about 1834, married Mary Vice on 29 Oct 1863 (Ancestry index says she was "Nancy Vice", other records say "Mary", and lived in Clinton Co. at least through the 1880 census. Mary a widow in 1900, Clinton Co.

Emma K. Roth and Charles Frederick Kurtz (Curts) Jr.

am seeking information on this couple. Emma K. Roth was born in Iowa on January 6, 1867 to Frederick and Wilhelmine Roth. They moved to Nuckolls County Nebraska (Lawrence Nebraska area) before 1885. Emma K. Roth married Charles Frederick Kurtz JR. on January 1, 1886 in Nuckolls County Nebraska. They had these children, all born in Nuckolls County, Nebraska:

Ella born May 1889
Rosa born 1890 died 1900 in Nuckolls Co. NE
Bessie born March 1892
Sadie born April 1896
Susie born November 1897
Lester William Kurtz born April 23, 1899
Nellie born 1903
Gladys born 1907

all birthdates are approximate from the 1900 census, except Lester's, I found him as being registered for WWI draft living in Bladen Nebraska in 1918 with his mother Emma. Bladen Nebraska is only 20 miles west of Lawrence Nebraska and is located in Webster County. I found Emma in the 1920 census living with only a few of the children, and no husband was listed. She was listed as being married, not widowed. Does anybody recognize this Kurtz family? Emma spelled her last name as Curts in the 1920 census, and Lester spelled his last name as Curts when he registered for the draft. Please contact me if you have any info on this family!

I recently found the article written by the great granddaughters of William and Talitha Curts. Would love to make contact with Nana Lou Dudley, Jo Ann Mathers and/or Gwen LaRue. The article was written in 1994 and appeared in the Ovilla (Texas) Family Histories. I am researching their daughter Eva married to Robert Miller Betts.

have Michael and Rebecca (Tolbert) Curts' family bible which lists the family as follows:
"Michael A. Curts was married to Rebecca Tolbert Sept 11, 1850" [Note: the marriage records of Butler Co. OH say "15 Sept 1851"]

"Rebecca Talbert (sic) was born July 1824" [This on a separate slip of paper - may have been inserted because she gave different ages in every census.]

"F.M. Curts, [born] Jan 10, 1848
M.A. Curts, June 11, 1851
C.A. Curts, July 16, 1853
R.A. Curts, Sept 11, 1857
J.R. Curts, May 27, 1860
G.E. Curts, May 27, 1860
W.C. Curts, May 20, 1863 [On another page listing the same children, he is called "C.W."]

A letter to me, written in the 1960's by Mrs. Ocalla Fugate Bishell, daughter of Mary Ann Curts Fugate, lists "Mother's brothers and sisters" as:

Francis Marion - never married (male)
Charles - married Betty, 1 boy, 1 girl died young
George - bachelor
John (twin to George) - married, no children
Clark - married - 2 children, 1 girl, 1 boy
Rhoda - married Bud Harrison, 3 boys, 2 girls

Ocalla was born in 1888 and remembered her Curts grandparents very well.

Curts from OHIO and Curts in MEXICO

Hi everyone,

My name is Jay Bardwell Christopher Curts, I live in mexico. I am the oldest of the last generation of Curts ( at least the ones that i know) here in mex. Im tracing the family but I found a gap, so i need your help.

The eldest Curts i have info about is from John Curts, a Methodist Minister in KS circa 1830. Then comes the Reverend Lewis E. Curts, who married Electa Clark Bardwell. They had 9 kids, one of 'em was Jay Wilfred Curts (notice, i have found that his name has been confused with Winnifred ex. Jay Winnifred Curts). He had kids, and i think that one of those was my grandfather, William Bardwell Curts Ruthmann.

the info im missing is the name of the spouse of jay w. curts, but all other information that fills the rest of the family will be truly thanked.
