Margaret Cushen---need some help

Interesting thread that dates back many years:) I know very little of my mother's family...any help is greatly appreciated. My mother, Margaret Cushen (mothers maiden name McMahon) was born 22 Sep 1942 in South Dublin. Around age 3 she moved with her mother and brother Micheal George Cushen to County Clare Ireland. While there, her brother Patrick was born. I am unsure how long he lived. Records indicate he may have died before age 1. My mother also had a sister. Dad said her name is Anne (sp?). Around 1959 my mother immigrated to San Francisco California to be with her aunt Peggy McMahon. In 1966 her brother came to San Francisco as well and still lives there in Union City, California. My mother met my father, Thomas Joe McCoy III, in San Francisco. They later married and when his enlistment was up in they Navy, they returned to Spartanburg, South Carolina to be with his family. My parents had 3 sons--Thomas Joe McCoy III, Michael Anthony McCoy and of course me, Donald Andrew McCoy. Between the 3 of us we have 11 children. If you knew my mother growing up or know of her family, please reply. Thanks in advance.

Hi all,

I was hoping that someone might be able to help me out with the family of my great-great grandmother, Margaret Cushen (born Dublin City, c.1878-1882). She had at least two sisters - Mary Cushen (born Dublin City, c.1874/75) and another named Molly Cushen (apparently born in USA). She is said to have at least one brother, and from census records I know that her mother was named Mary (born Dublin City, c.1845/46).

I would love to learn more about Margaret's father, as there's a rumour that he was a soldier in the British Army. Any details would be greatly appreciated.

Neil

Hi, I am the daughter of Gerry Michael Cushen, born in Chelan, Wa. I do not know his fathers name, all that I know is that he was in the military. It is not something he tells me a lot about, but Cushen is not a common last name so I imagine we are cousins of some sort, probably like 30 times removed, lol. But I am very curious to find any information that I can, so if I find anything I will let you know.

Robert I think we are related - well, if you go a long way back anyway. I suppose you may have found the Isle of Wight family history society website? They have a BMD database. Using this I was able to find your father's birth, which included the maiden name of his mother making it easy to find his parents marriage and so on back in time....

To cut it short (if I've got it right), my great-great-great-grandfather is the brother of your great-great-great-grandfather! Also, your grandfather Charley seemed to have 9 siblings, 7 of them girls. So girls must run in your family...

I hope you see this, as this thread does not seem active at all at the moment.

Kathy in NZ

I have now answered part of my own question, having found 3 Cushens christened at West Cowes, isle of Wight, in 1682, 1688 and 1691. However that is 2 or 3 generations away from my John Cushen....any ideas on what I can do next?

Isle of Wight Cushen families

Hi to all you Cushen descendents,
I have now got a bit further in my family tree, having found my great-great-great-great grandfather John Cushen married to Mary Waggett, who together had 8 children all born around West Cowes, Isle of Wight, between 1780-1799. However I do not know where this John Cushen came from, whether he was also born in the isle of Wight or came from somewhere else. If anyone knows of Cushen families living on the Isle of Wight pre 1780 or can provide any other relevant information, I'd be very grateful. Thanks.

Hi, I am not a Cushen but my mother's maiden name was Cecily Alice Cushen. She is a grandchild of Thomas Cushen(born 1860/1, Northfleet, Kent) who married Alice Ann Richards and came out to New Zealand in the early 1890's. My mum would be really interested to find relatives. Thomas Cushen had an older sister (Mary J, born 1860, West Cowes, Isle of Wight) and younger siblings, John D (1862, Gravesend, kent), Arthur W (1864), Edward J (1866), Ann (1868, Bromley). I have found out that his brother JOhn married Alice and had children - John, Nancy and Jessie (they would be my mum's father's cousins). Further back, I have found that Thomas Cushen's father was a Thomas Cushen born 1833'ish, West Cowes, isle of Wight and that his father was John Cushen, born around 1784 Northwood, Isle of Wight. The story goes that these Cushens were originally from Ireland, however I have not been able to trace the family back further than the Isle of Wight.

I'd love to hear from anyone who thinks this family tree fits in with theirs.

Hi there,
I see your message is some years old but I've just come across it. I come from a long line of Cushens, who have lived in the same village in Co. Kilkenny in Ireland for many generations - although I know there are other Cushens in the counties of Laois, Clare, Limerick and Tipperary who aren't related. Our family has been in the wool/weaving business for as long as anyone can remember, and Sylvester is a (strangely) common name amongst my ancestors - that might help narrow things down for any researchers. We have some Cushen cousins in Liverpool and London, but none that we know of elsewhere. Hope this is of some help

We lived in Sandringham, Victoria Australia for many years, dad had three other brothers and sister all where brought up in and around Melbourne inercity suburbs. I have lived in country Victoria for some years know, have two other living brothers and a 3 of my own boys. Family originally came from Ireland, believe Tipperary. migrated to Austraia sometime in the 1800's.

Dennis Quishian/Cushen/Cussen was born in Galbally, Limerick Co., Irelend in about 1800. He married Catherine Casey (b. c.1806) there in 1825, and they raised most of their family there. They immigrated to N. America in about 1842. They were in Boston by 1844, and Columbia Co., Wisconsin by about 1847.

I'm very interested in any information on the Cushen and Casey families in Galbally. I'm also interested in Cushens from the region where Limerick, Cork, and Tipperary counties come together, as they are likely related?

[If this e-mail is no longer valid, try my website http://www.cushings.com/roots/ .]

I have been trying to trace my great Grandmother’s family, her maiden name was Feery. She was born in 1882 and moved to the Altrincham area of Cheshire, now Greater Manchester. She married John Fahey who was killed in an accident while working at Salford docks. She then remarried to my Great Grandfather John Burke of Castleconnell near Limerick. I know she had a sister named Beatrice and possibly other sisters called Catherine/Cath, Helen/Nell and another sister called Mary. She may have also had a brother called Andrew. I will be more than happy to share any information I have on the family after they came across.
Greetings Frank Feery,
I could not resist to ask you about my own genealogical line since you and I share the same exact name. My grandfather was John Feery born in Erryarmstrong, Kings Co. on February 27, 1898. He had several siblings; William, Patrick and Joseph. The three My grandfather, William and patrick emigrated to the U.S. I'm not sure about Joseph. Those are the only ones I know by name as I believe there were more brothers and sisters. My greatgrandparents names were John Feery and Catherine Robbins (Feery) and unfortunately at this time that is all I know. All I know for certain is that they were from Kings Co. I would appreciate any feedback at all - even if it's just to say hello to a fellow Feery as I'm sure we are related somewhere along the line. I hope you see this message, since the reply I'm answering to is from 2002.
Best Regards to you,
Frank Feery

hi, see that you & family are from Liverpool. I am researching the Cushions from Liverpool and was wondering if there could be a connection. The top line so far is a Sylvester Cushion & wife Catherine, both from Ireland. Had 7 known children all born in Liverpool starting with Anastasia 1880, Patrick 1882, Catherine 1885, Mary 1888, Philip 1891, Sylvester 1894, Bernard 1896 & finally Bernadette ?. I have this family in the 1891 & 1901 census. The line I am searching goes through Catherine

Regards

Malcolm Mackenzie

Hi, I'm living but no longer a Cushen due to Marriage. I come from a large family of Cushen's. I have two brothers who both have two children and numerous Cousins who will keep the Cushen name going. My dad's name was Michael who had a brother called Jimmy. I have tried tracing the Cushen name and I got as far as finding out there are two places in Northern Ireland named Cushendale and Cushendile. My eldest brother knows more so if you get in touch and I let him know.

Hi, I'm a Cushen! I didn't think there were any in the uk either!
My Dad is a Cushen, but we are the only original ones in our family because his siblings moved to New Zealand and got married. His Mum died and he never new his Dad so I never got to meet my 'Cushen' Grandparents.
Anyway.....I am 25 and live in Cornwall, I was born here and never wanted to move anywhere else! But I am proud to be a Cushen beacause the name is so unusual! I used to have the micky taken out of me when I was at school about the name and still get a giggle when I say what my surname is!
Speak to you soon possibly, you never know, we might be related!!!
Michala Cushen xxx

Im a living Cushen ! sorry its taken me over a year to reply but Ive only just found this site. Im living in Suffolk, my father also - Colin Cushen, he was born in 1938 on the Isle of White, his father Im not too sure about, apart from knowing his name is Charlie Cushen but hasn't been alive in my lifetime. I have a daughter but no sons to keep the name going. Please get in touch for a chat to see if we might be related...you never know !!!
