My G. Grandfather was Arline C. Cushion/Cushing of Panama City, Fla. He was married to Martha Ann Brown. Their daughter, Harriette (Hattie) married my Grand father, Clarence Welch. Arline was a fisherman and was lost at sea during a hurricane in the late 1890s. I am looking for any information about him or his family. Does any of this sound familiar to you? After he died, Martha moved the family to Texas. That is as far as I can go. Any help would be helpful. Thanks

This is cool I always wondered where the rest of the family wound up, the cousins I know are from Aunt Betsy my dads
sister who was born on the islands, and spent most of her
life in Las Vegas Nv. Your dad Charles and your mom Mersades, (I think that was here name) came to our house in 1970 in Costa Mesa, California, when my dad and yours
talked about the islands alot.

I was born in 1955 in Burbank California and remember going to Grandmas house in San Diego with our familiy for a visit
when I was about 6. She gave my dad some of the Metals, I think my brother has them now.
We did a search on Ancestry.com back in 2004 and got a short copy of the family tree.
I am Sharon, I am married and have 2 Girls and we live in Orange Couny California. I also have 2 brothers and one sister, my sister Deborha is the oldest and lives in Idaho and has 4 kids, Walter III, 2nd oldest, lives in Las Vegas Nv. and has 2 boys, and Brett next in line, has 1 daughter and also lives in Orange County, I am the youngest. All of the kids are adults now.

Here is my e-mail address so we can keep in touch instead
of going back and forth on this, it's dhracer1@netzero.net

Hope to hear from you soon, would like to share pictures
and any information about our family.
actually there were about 11 or 12 brothers and sisters. My nephew has the family bible where all the names and dates of birth are. I did have a photocopy of the page but not sure where it is. I will have him send me another copy and get it to you.

As to living in the islands I was born May 1939 and our family was put in a prisoner of war camp by the Japanese sometime in 1942 where we remained until Feb 1945 when we were liberated by U.S. forces and from there we came to the States by Naval vessels.

There are several interesting articles and will see if I can get them also a link which lists much of the family.

Oh Carmen the last sister died some years back and was over 100. Dad lived to 94 as did his mother. I have some pictures, some of their mother and father one of quite a few of the kids and one of the father with a couple of the daughters and my father from their home in L.A.

Where do you live? My kids live in the Chicago area and my wife and I have a home also in the suburbs of Chicago but leave for a little vacation place in Florida to get away from the cold shortly.

I have cousins in San Diego from the Cushing family as well as several in Guam where my Uncle Frank settled (long story).

Anyhow will see what I can find then will get back to you. My son just happened on your post when he was doing some research with my granddaughter for school.

Oh I did find a copy of the orders awarding Walter the silver star and the citations for his actions that resulted in the award. I can make a copy and send it to you as a jpg or pdf also a picture of Grandma Cushing receiving the silver star in a newpaper article that I believe was a San Digo paper since Grandma Cushing was living on Coronado Island at that time when the award was given (June 1946).

So you would be my dad Walter Jr.s cousin. All the pictures that I have from the Philippines dated 1934 refure to my dad as Buddy so you may know him by that name also.
His sister was Betsy.
I was wondering if you lived on the Islands with them when you were a kid? My grandfather was a cargo pilot so I have been told.

Tedpack,
I think we have something here. Kerion Vincent {Walter} (Rennie) Cushing b. 5/30/1874 father Dennis Cushing (II) and mother Alice Gleason, daughter to Keyon Gleason and Alice Henneberry, b. 10/8/1854 Hales Corners, Waukesha, Wi. (Kerion is the spelling on registered birth) at Portage, (Ft. Winnebago), Columbia Co. Wi. Back in the old days, a lot of people just spelled how words sounded. Many people didn't know how to read or write and therefore didn't correct any spelling errors. I don't know when the Walter was added (I believe he did it himself. I do have copies of a poem and short story, published under his copyright name W. V. Cushing and Walter V. Cushing c. 1935)
Which family, may I ask are you researching?
Thanks for your in put. I've been stalled for quite some time. This has given me new hope.

Hi Agnes,

I read your post ("Found a Keyron Gleason/Alice Henneberry in Ireland.") and wept in frustration, banging my glass on the desk, spilling good bourbon whiskey all over the cat, who now resents you. WHERE did you find Alice and Keyron in Ireland? In a dusty book? In an on-line data base we can all look at? What did it say? Did you find their parents? How old were they and what were they doing?

I read the rest of the posts in this thread and hoped fervently that the good ladies who posted their e-mail addresses 6 and 7 years ago still have them. There’s a good reason the wizards at Ancestry went to a great deal of trouble to establish users. When your e-mail address changes, you change it once, and – Bingo! If someone clicks on your name on ANY post you made, it shows the new address, just in case a researcher comes along six weeks, six months or six years afterwards. It doesn't change the one you put in the post; that would need a wizard with a bigger want.

Here is what I have on Alice and Keyron. Sources at the bottom. Click on my name to get my e-mail address.

In 1850 the family is in Rochester, Racine, Wisconsin:

Keyron Gleason, 36, Ireland, laborer
Ally Gleason, 37, Ireland
Ellen Gleason, 8, F, Ireland
Aritz Gleason, 4, F, Ireland
Bridget Gleason, F, 1, Wisc

In 1860 the family is in Chester Twp, Adams, Wisconsin; PO New Chester:

Corn Gleason, 45, Ireland, farmer
Allice Gleason, 46, Ireland
Ellen Gleason, 17, Ireland
Annis Gleason, 14, Ireland
Mary Gleason, 9, Wisc
Catharine Gleason, 7, Wisc
Allice Gleason, 5, Wisc
John Gleason, 3, Wisc

I'm going to guess that Bridget, who is 1 in 1850, died and Mary who is 9 on the 1860 is a different person. They could be the same person, named Bridget Mary or Mary Bridget.

In 1880 the family is in Moundville, Marquette, Wisconsin:

(Name, Relation, Marital Status, Gender, Race, Age, Birthplace, Occupation Father's Birthplace, Mother’s Birthplace),

Hessey Gleason, Self, M, Male, W, 65, Ire, Farmer, Ire, Ire
Alice Gleason, Wife, M, Female, W, 66, Ire, Keeping House, Ire, Ire
John Gleason, Son, S, Male, W, 23, Wi, Farm Laborer, Ire, Ire

The LDS indexer made a hash of Keyron's name, but she had an excuse. In the ancestry images it looks like "Keyron" if you know what to look for. If not, the capital letter that starts the name could be "FL", "H", "K", "JL" or "M". The second letter is "e" or "i", maybe. The third letter has a tail (g, j, p, q, y, z) and the last 3-4 letters are so squished that counting them is difficult and reading them is impossible.

In 1900 Alice is widowed and living with her daughter and son-in-law in Nevada, so, unless she lied, Keyron died before then. Divorced or deserted women sometimes moved in with their daughters and told the enumerator they were widowed, back then.

Browns Precinct, Washoe, Nevada;

(Name, age, relation, birth month and year, Birth Place, father's BP, mother's BP, occupation)

Stephen Ede, 59, head, Sep 1840, England, Eng, Eng, rancher
Evert Ede, son, 31, June 1868, Calif, Eng, Ireland
Sadie Ede, 29, Daughter-in-Law, Dec 1870, Calif, Eng, Wisc
Alice Gleason, 87, mother-in-law, Sept 1812, Ire, Ire, Ire
Phillip Gleason [Ede], 20, son, Sept 1879, Nevada, Eng, Ire
[Says Gleason, but it is Philip Ede, son]
James Ryan, 31, Boarder
Fred Abby, 37, Boarder
Sabbatino Vanschea 33, Boarder

Alice died in 1901 at the ranch in Nevada.

Two of the daughters, Ellen and Annise, married EDE brothers. I’m doing the Edes. I’d be happy to swap GEDCOMs or data.

Sources:

United States Census, 1850, Rochester, Racine, Wisconsin; Roll M432_1004; Page: 172; Image: 339.

United States Census, 1860, Chester, Adams, Wisconsin; Roll M653_1399; Page: 20; Image: 21.

United States Census, 1870, Moundville, Marquette, Wisconsin; Roll M593_1724; Page: 578; Image: 297.

United States Census, 1880, Moundville, Marquette, Wisconsin; p. 564A on the LDS.

United States Census, 1900, Browns Precinct, Washoe, Nevada; Roll: T623 943; Page: 7B; Enumeration District: 43.

“Five Ede brothers”, by Viola Keen, privately printed.
Ms. GGC,

I changed my profile, so my real name shows. It is Ted Pack. I hadn't noticed that.

> Back in the old days, a lot of people just spelled how words sounded.

Yup. Alice is "Henneberry" in my source, "Five Ede Brothers". I have found my Pack relatives in the census as Pack, Back, Peck, Pick, Pock, Puck, Park and Pork.

I'm researching the Ede family. Two Ede brothers married two Gleason sisters.

Hampton Ede married five times. His first wife died about 1862 - 1864. Hampton went back to Wisconsin from California, married Annis / Ann / Anne / Annie Gleason and headed back west. She died on the journey and is buried near Lovelock, Nevada. I can't find anything about her save the pre-marriage census records, which I have already posted, and a paragraph in "Five Ede Brothers". Here is what I have on Hampton:

Name: Hampton Ede
Father: Peter Ede (bet 1773 and 1778 - ????)
Mother: Sarah Willett (bet 1795 and 1805 - ????)

Birth 3 Feb 1827 Brighton, Sussex, England
Census 1870 (age 43) Quartz Twp, Plumas, California
Census 1880 (age 53) Beckworth Twp, Plumas, California
Census 1900 (age 73) Glendale, Washoe, Nevada
Death 30 Dec 1903 (age 76) Walla Walla, Walla Walla, Washington
Burial Mountain View Cem, Walla Walla, Washington

"Five Ede brothers" has his birth date 3 Feb 1827. His obituary has it January 05, 1826. His census entries are:

1870: Hampton Ede, 48 (1822)
1880: Hamlon Ede, 52 (1828)
1900: Hampton Ede, May 1830

His tombstone says 03 Feb 1826 - 29 Dec 1904.

I'm using 3 Feb 1827, but it may be wrong. [TP]

Hazel M. Rushing very graciously transcribed this and posted it on the GenForum Ede surname board:

Nevada State Journal, Thursday Morning Dec. 31, 1903
Death of a Pioneer

Hampton Ede, an old and highly respected resident of Sierra Valley, died at Walla Walla, Washington, early yesterday morning. Mr. Ede left Reno a short time ago to visit his daughter in the north. He was taken suddenly ill and died shortly afterwards. The deceased was born at Brighton, Sussex county, England, January 05, 1826. He sailed for America in 1842 and settled in Wisconsin. In 1853 he crossed the plains and returned, but made two more trips to the coast in 1859 and in 1864. He leaves a daughter, Mrs. Dan McCloud of Walla Walla and a son, George Ede of Loyalton. He is survived by a brother, Stephen Ede, of this city.

==========

I can't find him in 1850 or 1860.

In 1870 the family is in Quartz Twp, Plumas, California:

(Indexed as "Cade" but the image says "Ede" as clear as can be, even at 50% size.)

Hampton Ede, 48, England, Farmer
Jane Ede, 25, NC
Sarah Ede, 10, Calif
Cora Ede, 9, Calif
George Ede, 7, Calif
Charles Gereneei, 19, Switzerland

==========

In 1880 the family is in Beckwourth, Plumas, California:

(Name, Relation, Marital Status, Gender, Race, Age, Birthplace, Occupation, Father's Birthplace, Mother's Birthplace)

Hamlon Ede, self, M, Male, W, 52, Eng, Farmer, Eng, Eng
Jane Ede, wife, M, Female, W, 35, NC, Keeping House, NC, NC
Christi Mcleod, Gdau, S, Female, W, 1, Ca, N.
Re: Edward John Cushing b1901, d1986

My name is Michael O'Brien. Edward Cushing was my uncle. Matt obtained some of his information from me. I am responding to the notes I saw going back and forth. I haven't been doing much searching lately so this is the first I've seen your notes.

Two items struck me and I was wondering about the validity of them. That our first ancestors came through Canada, and Thomas Cushing married Elizabeth Sheehan after Catherine's death if I have it right.

Going back to the 1st generation I'm aware of Thomas Cushing was married but to who is not known. They had Edwad Cushing (d. 1903 in Wexford Ireland) Other children were Catherine, Lawrence, Mary and an unknown child. The second generation that we have information for consisted of Edward Cusing who married Mary Whelan daughter of Thomas Whelan. Mother unknown. They had 3 children Thomas Joseph born abt November 11, 1867 in Ramsgrange County Wexford. Thomas died January 30, 1939 in Philadelphia. Thomas had a sister Joanna and a brother Lawrence (b. abt August 6, 1869). The information I have from the local church said that Joanna and Lawrence died very young.

Thomas (gen 1) married but to who is not known. They had a daughter Joanna. Thomas (gen 1) married Thomas Sullivan. They reportedly had children but not identified.

Getting back to my gradfather Thomas Joseph Cushing (b. 1867) he married Catherine Theresa Kehoe Cushing May 3, 1903 in St. Vincent de Paul Church, clergy was Father Thomas A. Walsh, assisted by the Rev. Hugh Curley. Thomas and Catherine's first home was 435 N. Exeter St. Baltimore. Their son Edward was born at this address and was baptized at the church where they were married. Catherine was born in 1864 and died July 6, 1929 in Baltimore City.

Thomas was probably confirmed between 1876-1877. I belive he emigrated to the United States in 1884 aboard the ship Hanoverian from Liverpool to Baltimore (this info still nedds to be confirmed). Thomas became a citizen July 14, 1888 (I still need to get a copy of his naturalization to confirm).

Thomas and Catherine had the following children: Edward, Thomas S., Emmett L., Catherine M., John, Joseph and Mary Margaret. Emmett maried Marie G. Emmett died March 18, 1981; Marie died January 19, 1986. John Cushing died January 29, 1973 in Ardsley PA. His wife was Rita Bannion. They had one child Paul. Mary my mother married Joseph O'Brien. Edward as you know married Mary O'Connor. Rita and Mary were cousins.

Thomas S. and Catherine Cushing children of Thomas J and Catherine are buried in Philadelphia (Holy Sepluchr) along with their grandparents Thomas J and Catherine T., and my parents Mary Cushing O'Brien and her husband Joseph.

I suspect Matt knows that his grandparents are aslo buried in the same cemetery as Thomas and Catherine his great-grandparents.

This part of the family has always been more difficult to track because there is not much documentation.

As far as a Canadian connection beyond what I have said I am not sure.I believe Thomas was the first Cushing in North America and suspect he likely came through Baltimore.

I also don't think my grandfather Thomas Cushing had a second wife. I think we would have been aware of that fact.

Joanna from generation 2 married a Colfax and they had at least one child name unknown.

That is about what we have except for some other addresses in Philadelphia where they lived and some corespondence between the government and Thomas when he was looking for assignments as a ship's engineer.

Phillip Hosea Cushing, the heir of the family and great great grandfather to Robert Jan Cushing was a carpenter by trade. He came west with the Mormon Train in 1847, in Heber C. Kimball's Co., driving one of the ten wagons. He made a second trip back to bring in an emigrant train, and died shortly after his return.

You can find more family information on my website at
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

I am not totally sure about this one yet, but I do have a few leads I can supply.

I have a Daniel Francis Cushing b: 10 Jan 1907 in Dorchester MA; d: Jun 1968 in Mt Vernon NY [SS#083-14-2396]. His parents were Daniel Leo Cushing and Helen Louisa Goward.

Francis (Frank) was in the Merchant Marines, and then a building superintendent in New York. In the 1930 US Census, he was at the State Farm, Bridgewater, MA. He married a Lillian UNKNOWN b: Abt 1911 who may be the Lillian Kramer you mentioned. They were of Irish heritage and no doubt of the Catholic faith as well. That would fit in snugly with any children being shipped off to an Catholic orphanage.

Does any of this fit in with your scenario?

I am trying to determine a place and date of death for Rebecca Cushing (born Rebecca Porter Whitman), wife of Arthur Clarence Cushing.

She was born 2 Jul 1877 in Swampscott, MA and can be found in the well-known "Genealogy of the Cushing Family" book.

I find her in the 1947 Boston City Directory, but not the 1961 Boston City Directory. (Ancestry.com does not have the years in between.)

I searched the MA vital records index in person, from 1947-1980 and could not find her.

Does anyone have access to the Boston city directories between 1947 and 1961? That might at least provide a clue as to when she left Boston.

My mother (age 80) reminised to me about the Cushing boys several years ago. She said the Cushings lived next to them in LA in the 1930's. One son was a prize fighter. I think she said something about living next to a grocery store. She said the prize fighter son gave her mother 50 cents -a big deal in the 30's- they were struggling financially. Mom said the family moved back to the Phillippines.(?) She saw them again in the summer of '45. Said that (Charles?)spent an evening with her folks, sharing remarkable stories of war in Manilla, including Bataan death march and how they were tortured, but they escaped death march by passing as natives. She also mentionned the Santa Thomas prison. She said there was a big article about the family in the LA Times in 1945.

I realize this is probably all too vague to be useful- but mom felt that the sons were very special- good people. I can talk to her again, but she now has early stages of Alzheimer's disease, and I'm not sure how much she'll still remember. I'll let you know if she can clarify this more!
Carol

Re: George Mitchel Cushing

Good evning Warren,

I don't know if you will remember these postings from last year, but I have finally connected all the dots on this mystery of George Mitchel Putnam becoming George Cushing.

May Bell Canter married Albert J. Putnam on 24, 1884 in Crystal City, Jefferson Co., MO. They had three children, George, Maime & Daisy. (I am not sure what happened to Albert Putnam)

On the 1900 census, George Putnam is living with his grandfather; Mitchel A. C. Canter in Perry Co. On the 1910 census, George Cushing is living with his sister; Maime Hug.

The question has always been who is the "Cushing". On Oct 2, 1903 Mary Putnam married John Cushing in Clayton, St. Louis County, MO. His parents are John Cushing and Mary Gardner; both born in Ireland. Their son John was born in St. Louis.

On Dec 30, 1911 John Cushing died in St. Louis and is buried at Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis.

I also located the death certificate of Mary Cushing; she died 25 Jan 1943 in St. Louis and is buried at the Forever Oak Cemetery in Kirkwood. Her death certificate reads as follows: Mary Kanter, also known as May Cushing, known as Mary Schroeder.

Does anyone fit within your "Cushing" family? Please let me know, if they do, I can give you more info on our family.
