Hello Terese - thank you for the information on the Black/Cusick connection. My connection to the Blacks was early, as I descend from Elizabeth (Black) and William Blackburn, through their daughter Martha "Patsy," who was the second wife of my Robert Houston. The Cusick link I have is with Patsy's sister, Jean, who married Joseph Cusick. Likely Joseph was related in some way to the Cusicks you mention in your post. What sources do you have for the marriage between Jean Black and John Cusick - I'd like to add this line to my database? Interestingly, Jean (Blackburn) and Joseph Cusick also had a son, John Black Cusick! At least that is information I have, and the family moved to Edgar Co., IL, with Mary Jane (Blackburn) and Samuel Colville Vance and their family.
I have not really done any research on the Blacks, but I'm always hoping to hook up with people like yourself and the David Black who posted earlier. Other researchers often share what they have, as do I. I've not run across any Harrises.
I'm hoping to find someone I can hire to do research in Blount Co., TN, where all of these families seem to have migrated from VA, many of them before 1800.
- Sally

John Black Cusick

Hi Sally,

DO you have a connection to any Harrises with your Black family? I have Elizabeth Cusick who married John Harris, Jr in Greene, TN 1798. Her brother was John Black Cusick and their parents were John Cusick born 1742 in Cecil, Maryland and Martha Black, daughter of Elizabeth Colville and John Black of Frederick, VA. In Blount, Tennessee the Cusicks and the Blacks are found on Crooked Creek with my Harris line, Group 3 descendants of Edward Harris and Flora Douglas.

There were several Harris brothers who emigrated from Ireland to Lancaster, PA area about 1730. One of the brothers settled in Cecil, MD and several went to Mecklenburg, NC and the oldest brother John settled close to his brothers but was in South Carolina after the boundaries of NC and SC were set. His wife was Rebecca McBay and their son, John (my line) was also in Abbeville, SC - Bull Town and Long Cane Creek with his siblings and then moved to Blount, TN before 1801.

Son, John Harris moved with his children to Blount and their names are William (my line), John Baird (the one I think was married to Elizabeth Cusick), Robert Marklin/Mecklin, Elizabeth, Mathew Handy, and Joseph Gilliland Harris. John was married twice and I don't know the name of either wife.

The older sons of John are in the Territory South of French Broad land grants of 1807 with land on Crooked Creek which was the location of Black's Station. In each of the locations I mentioned the Harrises are aligned with the Blacks, Alexanders and several other families. The Wallaces are also related that are on Crooked Creek and from the Meck. area.

My Harrises are also aligned with the Houstons and Henrys of Blount and move to Murray county, Georgia about 1840 with several families including those and the Blacks.

I am trying to look and the allied families and see if I can fill in some missing pieces. Thanks very much,
Terese Mitchell

Hi Does not look like you have been on the message boards lately. I am also looking for Cusicks. Looking for the siblings of Susan Cusick daughter of Philip and Anne Mc Entee. I know some children went to Scotland around the Mary Hill area. I think some to the US. I do know she had a brother James, Hugh and James. Not sure about any others. Please let me know if you have any info on them. Thanks Karen

I would suggest to help getting responses to your request, that you give us more information, please.

Who are you; where are you; where is your family from; relatives names and locations; birth & death dates; would be good information to share. Without some of this, it is impossible to make a family connection with you, and your message will be ignored--because there is no way to respond.

John is a common name, and Russell isn't too uncommon, having much more information would be a big plus.

I just thought I would let you know about this, so that you wouldn't get frustrated by no replies.

Due to a divorce in the family I have no connection to this side of my family and I would like to learn more about my family and possibly get to know some of my family members. I feel a connection to that side that I can't explain and am trying to figure out where I come from and the traits that I have thanks to this side of my family. Please reply back. I know that I am a descendant of Vance Cusick as well. My brother has been working on our family tree. I don't want to just see a piece of paper, I would like to know you.

I've been researching him as of lately for my college assignment called 'Manchester Stories'. I've uncovered some photos of Johnny, and some information of official bouts he's had in the ring, etc. Turns out he trained the Manchester's Police Team and was the first English man to go overseas to win the British Title in boxing from what my granddad told me. Hope this information helps.
Maybe we're related with you being a Cusick too, lol :)
I've been trying to construct the family tree for the last few days.
Could you review my tree and see if you recognise anyone there?
Many thanks,
Catherine.

Russell Ploss is my ancestor. I see you have a different spouse listed for Mary Cusick, daughter of John. Would appreciate any additional info to make this connection.

My Cusick/Cusack family came from Saugerties originally Ireland but I don't know what county. They worked in the quarries and moved to Brooklyn in the 1900s.
John Cusick/Cusack born around 1842 came to Saugerties around 1870. Records show the name spelled both ways.
Wonder if there's a connection
Mary
Cusicks from Kingston NY

I am looking for information for my maternal grandfather's family. I do not have too much information, but here is what I do have. My grandfather's name was Michael Cusick (born around 1860); he grew up in Kingston NY, but moved to Brooklyn after he married my grandmothers, Elizabeth O'Callaghan. My grandfather's parents emigrated to New York from Ireland's County Clare area sometime in the 1840s. My grandfather had a brother, John and a sister, Mary and more siblings who became priests and nuns. My grandfather's mother's surname was Donnelly and his cousins were in the undertaking business. My grandfather was a longshoreman in NY for many years and a bartender during the speakeasy years. He died at the age of 72.

If any of this seems to match with some info that you have in your family, please email me.

Nora Cusack Kilroy was may grandfather Peter's sister. She had 5 sisters and Peter. Not sure what you're looking for but I have quite a bit of info on the family. She was born in Cooranool Ireland. Just outside of Castlebar. Mathew and Ellen were her parents. Mathew was a tailor. They are all buried at Calvary. Mathew died in 1895 and Ellen in 1910.
There is a stain glass window in St. Dominic's honoring them. Feel free to ask anything and I'am curious about your side of the family. Hope to hear from you.
John Cusack (not the actor)

I am looking for more information about the family of Nora Cusick Kilroy. Nora was the daughter of Matthew Cusick and Ellen McManamon. Nora immigrated from Ireland in the early 1880s, and married Michael Kilroy in about 1888, presumedly in Chicago, IL. The rest of Nora's family immigrated to Chicago in the 1890s. Nora died in 1902 in Chicago, my great-great grandmother was her daughter Mary Ellen Kilroy Munroe (1893-1919).

Both my grandfather William W Enright and my grand uncle Cornelius Enright are listed as hired hands for the Cusick family at different times around 1900. I suspected that my great grandmother may have been a Cusick but have nothing to support that. Her name was Cynthia and she was born in Ohio. My great grandfather immigrated from Ireland in the 1870s and worked forthe railroad before settling in Dickinson County Kansas. I think he may have been born in County Limerick near Murhur but again I am not sure.

Jane may have been the last one born? She was born around 1865. The 1880 Census lists Richard T. Cusick as widdowed. Any information on this family sure is appreciated!

He worked for the government there when the government was giving out 80 acre homestead parcels of land. That was his job. Abraham Ledieu was his grandfather who worked for the Hudson Bay Trading Co and was a pioneer in settling the Dakota Territory. I have a copy of his diary and it is fascinating. He workd well with the Indians and from talking with the Cusicks he may have been married to one and had two daughters and John Cusick married one. Talk to me soon, Bill Brinegar

They had two daughters still living with them, Marcella, 16 and Elizabeth, 14 or 15 (record is smudged). Both children were in school, and were born in KS. Hope that helps.
