Note: Ygnazio CUSMA was probably born in the 1850s in or near Gioiosa Marea, Sicily. He married Frances Calabrosa who would have been several years younger than him. We don’t know when Ygnazio and Frances died but believe it was after 1917 because son Anthony, on his World War I draft card, states that he sends money home to help support his parents. Based on immigration records and information from family members, we know that Ygnazio and Frances had at least six children. All dates for Ygnazio and Frances (birth, death, marriage) are estimates.

9. ANTHONY P. CUSHMAN, also recorded as Antonio P CUSMA, (Common's grandson) was born 5 FEB 1889 in Gioiosa Marea Municipality, Messina Province, Sicily, Italy to Ygnazio CUSMA [2] and Frances Calabrosa [3]. ABT 1906, aged about 17, he immigrated to Sicily to New York. 1920, aged about 31, he resided in Sault Sainte Marie, Chippewa County, Michigan. 1930, aged about 41, he was a Laborer, Union Carbide Plant, and he resided in Sault Sainte Marie, Chippewa, Michigan. Anthony died 11 JUL 1974, aged 85, in Sault Sainte Marie, Chippewa County, Michigan.
Note: Antonio CUSMA was born 05 Feb 1889 in Gioiosa Mara and immigrated to the US about 1906. We believe that Antonio was in De Kalb, Saint Lawrence County, New York for the 1910 census. He was a boarder in the home of Italian immigrants Dominic & Rosa Paona. Several men lived in the home (all from Italy) and all of them worked at the Stella Mine, a pyrite mine. The Oswegatchie River and several creeks located in De Kalb were mined for pyrites, barytes and limestone.

Sometime between 1911 and 1916 Tony moves to Sault Sainte Maire, Michigan. He works as a construction foreman for the Oscar Daniels Company which either built ships or was a shipping company. Tony lived at 219 Water Street. In 1917 Tony (still single) registers for the World War I draft and lists that he provides "partial support" for his parents, who are probably still living in Italy. This is the last time we see him use the surname CUSMA, all documents after this have the surname Cushman. He also Americanizes his first name to Anthony (Tony), although his death certificate in 1974 will have the name Antonio Cushman on it. About this time he meets and marries Anna J. Tessitore, the daughter of Italian immigrants (Joseph and Mary). In 1919 their first son, Ignatuius J. Cushman, known as Iggy, is born.

Sault Sainte Marie had four major industries in the early years of the 20th century. 1. Sault Woolen Mills (1898); 2. Northwestern Leather Company (1900) (a hide tanning company); 3. Union Carbide Company (1903); and 4. Cadillac-Soo Lumber company (1923).

On the February 1920 census the Cushman household included Tony (Antonio), Anna, baby Ignatuisus, Tony's brother Carl (Charles) and a boarder named Phillip Molick (born 1901 in Italy). Tony, Carl and Phillip all work at the Northwestern Leather Company. The home they live in (840 Ashmun Street) must have been a boarding house or apartment building of some sort as there are several families living at that address. On November 4th of 1920 their second son, Francis Samuel Cushman was born.

By 1930 Tony has changed jobs and was working at the Union Carbide plant. He now owns his own home (at 710 Easterday Avenue) and has a household net value of $3,000.

10. ANNA J. TESSITORE (Common's grandaughter by marriage) was born 8 JUN 1900 in Michigan to Joseph Tessitore and Mary Lnu. Anna died 27 AUG 1987, aged 87, in Saint Ignace, MacKinac County, Michigan.

ABT 1910, aged about 20, he immigrated to U.S.A. from Italy. 1917, aged about 27, he was a Rubber worker at BF Goodrich Company, and he resided in Akron, Summit County, Ohio. 1920, aged about 30, he resided in Sault Sainte Marie, Chippewa County, Michigan. 1930, aged about 40, he was a Baker in a Bakery Shop, and he resided in Sault Sainte Marie, Chippewa County, Michigan. Charles died 23 OCT 1986, aged 96, in Sault Sainte Marie, Chippewa County, Michigan.
Note: I do not know if Charles had a different given name prior to coming to America. Charles does not sound very Italian to me. He was in Akron Ohio when he filled out his World War I draft card but later moved to Sault Sainte Marie. .

ANGELO CUSMA (Common's grandson) was born ABT 1898 in Gioiosa Marea Municipality, Messina Province, Sicily, Italy to Ygnazio CUSMA [2] and Frances Calabrosa [3]. 22 MAY 1914, aged about 15, he immigrated to Italy to New York. Angelo died bEF 1920, when younger than 21, in Sault Sainte Marie, Chippewa County, Michigan.
Note: This younger brother also came to America and died young in Sault Sainte Maire. He is buried in Riverside Cemetery. Not known if he used CUSMA or Cushman as last name. It is hoped that someone can make the trip to City Hall, Room 116 (CITY CLERK/PURCHASING AGENT), where the cemetery records are maintained, and do some research to find the information on him. Note: Cono CUSMA born 6 Oct 1884 arrived U.S. 27 Jun 1913 on the ship Prinzess Irene. Died 3 Jul 1962 in Canton, Stark County, Ohio. He was married when he arrived (married about 1919) and his wife and eldest son joined him later. He went home to Italy for a visit and returned to the US on 14 Mar 1927. In 1930 he worked for the American Sheet Company in Canton, Stark County, Ohio.

Ms. Cusma was born in Akron and was a lifelong area resident who attended Hammel Business College. For 31 years, she was secretary for the president of the United Rubber Workers Union. Evangeline was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church.

She will be remembered as a quiet and gentle lady, who was preceded in death by her parents, Mike and Anna, and brother, Russ. She will be sadly missed by her brother, Mickey; aunts, Helen Nemeth and Antoinette Comella, and is also survived by godchildren and cousins.

Mr. Cusma was born in Akron on Jan. 25, 1923 and retired from the Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. as a mold designer. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Coast Guard, and was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, moving to Las Vegas seven years ago.
