I don't know John, but i too am on a search for my kin folks who were born and raised, most of them have died now. They were born and raised in Nebo, NC in the county of McDowell and their names were Cuthbertson. Most of the Cuthbertsons were also related to another family known as Rutherford.

Thank you for your contact. Although I am well aware of the Cuthbertson contribution to Neath town, I am not part of their family so have not collected data about them. My interest in this particular Alexander is his connection with Dulais Fach as I am preparing a talk which includes that prioperty.

Your Alexander is indeed part of the picture but the generation before. He was born in 1732, married a Mary Tyler, and died in 1804. I have a copy of his Will which confirms he had brothers and sisters but gives no clue as to their identities. Where did he come from? I have extensive notes on his son, also Alexander, and family but cannot link them with my Alexander. Would like to exchange information if you are interested.

My mother was born Mollie Cuthbertson on April 29, 1932 at Wellhouse (now Barnet General) Hospital, Wellhouse Lane, Barnet, England. She was fostered out when she was a baby and her birth was not registered. There were in 1955 records at the hospital of her birth. She used to mention two brothers, Ron and Len, but I am not sure if they were real brothers or foster brothers. Her father's name on her wedding certificate is listed as William John Cuthbertson (Deceased). She may have been fostered by a woman named Davies. I only knew her as Nanna. As we moved to Australia when I was a baby, I never knew her and as she and Mum have passed on, so I cannot ask either of them for anymore details.
Would anyone know how I could get access to the records kept by the hospital or the agency handling the fostering?

Kaye, You are correct that William Cuthbertson (aka William Culberson) was born in County Tyrone, Ireland and came to America, landing in Wilmington, DE in August 1773, with his wife, Rachel Monteith and their two children, Thomas and Sarah Margaret. They had sailed from Ireland on the HMS Roebuck. They did live in Pennsylvania for about two years when Rachel's uncle, Nathaniel Monteith, brought the family from PA to Mecklenburg Co., NC (not Mickinberg, as you wrote it) to live near her mother, who was Nathaniel's sister (Nathaniel never married and had no children). He had been at William's and Rachel's wedding in January 1772 in County Tyrone, apparently along with her sister, Hannah Monteith. Some time later, William and Rachel moved to Burke Co., where they lived the remainder of their lives. Nathaniel's brother, Alexander and his wife, Jane or Jean, settled in Burke Co. also and had a number of children, one of whom was Janet Monteith, who married David Cuthbertson. David and Janet settled in Wingate, Union Co., NC and are buried in the cemetery there. There are a great number of Cuthbertsons in Union Co., NC.
William fought in the American Revolution and was captured by the Tories when they entered his house in the middle of the night; however, William was able to escape from these soldiers of Tarleton and returned home and to his regiment. All this is contained in his pension application to the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, which can be obtained through the National Archives in Washington, DC. Be sure and ask for these papers with both spellings of his surname.
William is NOT a descendant of Rev. John and Sarah Moore Cuthbertson of Middle Octoraro, PA as I have researched and proven this erroneous fact (put forth by some who do not know and have not researched the PA State Archives and the PA State Church Archives, as I have). Rev. Cuthbertson had only three children, two sons and a daughter, who never married and had no children. I have a copy of Rev. Cuthbertson's daily journal.
Are you a Duncan descendant from Union Co., NC. My great great grandfather was William Wesley Duncan, b. 1835, d. 1897. Have researched this family back to Anson, then to Martin Counties, NC. Anne

Re: CUTHBERTSON WISE FAMILIES

I have completely researched the family of William and Rachel Monteith Cuthbertson, who married in County Tyrone, Ireland and came to America on the HMS Roebuck, with their two small children, Thomas and Sarah, in August 1773 at the port of Wilmington, DE. They came with William's father, Thomas whose wife may be Rachel Burleyson (not yet proven) and lived somewhere in PA for about two years.
Rachel Monteith Cuthbertson's uncle, Nathaniel Monteith, had attended the wedding of William and Rachel in Ireland. He brought W. & R. to Mecklenburg Co., NC so that Rachel could be with her mother who was apparently ill. Since this was Nathaniel's sister-in-law it is assumed that Rachel's maiden name was Monteith. William joined the American side in the fight against the British in the Revolutionary War. I have copieS of his pension papers where he tells of his capture by a group of Tories from Tarleton's forces who broke into his house in the middle of the night and took him prisoner. He was able to escape, killing several of the Tories. He returned to his company.
I also have copies of Rachel's request for William's pension following his death and also Hannah Monteith's appearance before the Court of Common Pleas and Quarter Sessions, in which she tells of her uncle Nathaniel's attendance at William and Rachel's marriage in Ireland in a Presbyterian Church there. Hannah backs up what Rachel has told the court. These pension papers are all in the National Archives in Washington, DC. In William's pension paper, he clearly tells the Court that his name is listed under "Culberson" and may not be found under "Cuthbertson."
I have photos, very bad, but you can still see they are the headstones for William and Rachel in the Cuthbertson-Wise Cemetery in Burke Co., NC. Some of Rachel's and Hannah's kin are buried in a cemetery at Hopewell Presbyterian Church in Mecklenburg Co.
I have also thoroughly researched the family of Rev. Dr. John Cuthbertson and his wife, Sarah "Sally" Moore. He was born in Ayr, Scotland on April 3, 1718, but I do not know who his parents were. He came to America from Ayr,arriving on these shores in August 5, 1751. He was the first ordained minister, a Covenanter (now called Presbyterians in America) to be sent to the New World. He married Miss Sarah "Sally" Moore on February 2, 1756. She was the daughter of Walter Moore, who lived about 15 miles from Philadelphia, where Rev. C. visited many times. They had only three children: the oldest was Sarah, b. May 21, 1762. She kept house for her brother, John. She never married and died March 23, 1836. Second oldest was John, b. March 21, 1764. He was a physician and also never married, living as a bachelor with his sister. He d. September 27, 1827. He is buried beside his sister, Sarah in Washington Co., PA. Walter, the youngest child of John and Sarah was b. June 12, 1769, but died at age 20 on November 12, 1789. Walter apparently went astray of his parent's religious belief's in spite of his father's cousel, but was apparently forgiven of his sins on his (Walter's) deathbed by his father. All of this information was gleaned from a book about Rev. Cuthbertson by his descendant, Miss S. Helen Fields, who copied Rev. C.'s journal, which was kept daily from the day he set foot on these shores. He recorded all the baptisms and marriages that he performed, while riding over five states all on horseback which has been recorded as well over 75,000 miles. This was done to administer to his flock. This book by Miss Fields can be bought through the Genealogical Publishing Co. of Baltimore, MD.
Rev. C. died on March 10, 1791, ages 72 years, 11 months, and 7 days. He and his son Walter, are both buried in Middle Octoraro Cemetery in Lancaster Co., PA. Mrs. Sally Cuthbertson, his wife, who died. January 10, 1807, is buried in Washington Co. with their son and daughter.
Since Rev. Cuthbertson left no heirs, his plantation in Middle Octoraro, PA was inherited by a distance nephew, most likely Thomas Cuthbertson. He is therefore, no kin whatsoever to the North Carolina Cuthbertsons, and not to William Cuthbertson. The Cuthbertson family, originated in Midlothian, Scotland (lowlands) and migrated to Londonderry in the 1600s and then later moved to County Tyrone where our William Cuthbertson was born.
The Cuthbertson book, published in 1992, is full of errors along the lines of Rev. Cuthbertson, but if anyone wishes to purchase it, it can be bought by calling or writing to the Heritage Room, Old Union County Courthouse, Monroe, NC 28111.
If anyone wishes to have a copy of my 8 page research proving the above on Rev. C., please e-mail me at my new e-mail address annesends@yahoo.com. Anne

Williams' mother and father were NOT John and Sarah Moore Cuthbertson. I have thoroughly researched this family. Rev. John Cuthbertson died in 1791 after arring in Pennsylvania in 1751 and serving his flock by riding on horseback through five states, covering approximately 75,000 miles. He and his wife had only three children, none of whom married and died without issue. Children were Sarah, Dr.; John, and Walter. Walter died at age 20. The births of these three children are listed in Rev. C.'s daily journal, a copy of which I have. No marriages are recorded there. His land reverted to a distant nephew upon the deaths of all family members. If you wish more info, please e-mail me at annesends@yahoo.com. They lived in Burke County NC and deposited several generations of Wises there. Of which, I am one. Since Asheville is just over the mountain, David is probably a relative. They were from PA

JJ wise is buried with his wife saphronia at Oak Grove Baptist church in the LInville township of Burke County on the northwest side of Lake James.

William Cuthbertson wise is buried at an old abandoned church cemetery. I was told the church name was Obeth Baptist.. there was an Obeth Methodist near by. These were in a community that was abandoned when Lake James was built in the early 1900s.

Sorry, I don't have info on Catherine Chandler.

Good morning,
I believe we have a mutual relative. William Cuthbertson Wise in 1833 married Catherine Margaret Chandler, daughter of Tunstall Chandler, who was a sister to my great great grandmother Mary S. Chandler who married Lewis Singleton Deaver in Haywood Co. NC.
I would love to share info with you on these lines. I have searched a long time for the maiden name of Tunstall Chandler's spouse(mother of Mary and Catherine).
Hoping to hear from you,
Joanna Wood cjackrevwood@bellsouth.net
