I have an Eleanor Shekell buried at Monocacy Cemetery in Beallsville, MD.

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=39...

She was born on July 21, 1773. She married Robert Willson on October 29, 1798 in Montgomery County, MD. She died on August 21, 1851. They had a daughter named Mary Tillard Douglas Wilson born in 1812.

I doubt this Eleanor could be the same woman as William Cuyler's wife because they married in 1802/03, right?

Re: William Clarendon Cuyler - 3rd US Artillery, Savannah GA

William Clarendon Cuyler was born 3/17/1843 in Savannah, Georgia. He died November 2, 1869 and is buried in Laurel Grove Cemetery. For reasons I don't yet know, he served in the Federal Army in the Civil War - unusual for a member of a prominent Savannah family. He was promoted to 1st Lt. in 1863; then, for "gallant and distinguished service" he was promoted to captain in October 1864; then to major in 1865. He saw action at the Battles of Winchester and Cedar Creek.

Marriage announcement: Friday, July 30, 1925: At the First Methodist parsonage last evening Miss Ruth Ella Hogan daughter of Mr and Mrs John Hogan of 57 East Ninth street, was united in marriage to George Walter Cuyler, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Cuyler of 161 West Oneida street. Their children include: Betty J (ca 1925), Marion (ca 1926) and Norma Lorraine (7 sep 1934). All children born Oswego. George's siblings include: Marion (f, ca 1903) and James J (1907). I'm not related, just have a lot of Oswego data - since all the families seem to intermarry at some point.

I am not related to William Howe Cuyler and his wife Elanor. They however built a cabin/home on a small hill behind our home in Palmyra, NY which is now in Wayne County. There is no longer a standing structure. Major Cuyler was killed at the battle of Black Rock (War of 1812)in what is now Buffalo, NY in 1812. He is buried I believe in the Palmyra Pioneer cemetery. He and Elanor had children and there are still descendents. The last I knew the family even had the cannonball that took the majors life. There is also information about him in the Palmyra Kings Daughters Library files. I am looking for photocopies of any picture (painting or other rendering) of either Major Cuyler or his wife Elanor. Do you know of any ? There is apparently a 'Cuyler scrapbook' with considerable info including a picture taken from an ivory carving of Maj. Cuyler.

Hello Cuyler researchers! My neighbor found a hardcover Bible print date 1862, in a book store in Buffalo, NY. It has an inscription engraved on the front: Elizabeth Cuyler Winslow, from T.L.C. There are also two pictures on the inside front cover as well as an obituary notice for a Winslow child. If this fits with your family, let me know. My neighbor just thinks it would be cool to have this Bible back with the family it belongs to. [Although she doesn't want any money for it, s/h might be nice.] You can contact me at SusieB4711@msn.com
According to Ancestry.com...

Cuyler
Dutch: probably a variant of Koole, from a short form of the personal name Nikolaas (see Nicholas). This is a common Dutch name in the Albany area. A variant form of the surname in the Netherlands is Kuilart, suggesting perhaps that these could be occupational names for a potato grower, from kuilen ‘to plant potatoes’ (from kuil ‘pit’, ‘hole’).

H Trump

Sorry I haven't responded to your message sooner! I seldom check this board since I've had no responses in the past! I am elated with the info you have posted and would love more info. Did you find the Bible or does it belong to someone you know? This Bible was definitely owned by my family since all the names and dates of death that I have match those recorded in the Book. Elsie Margaret was my Mother and she died in 1989 in Westminster, CA.

I have a recent picture of his gravesite in Laurel Grove Cemetery, Savannah, GA, and it mentions his service to the US artillery. I was wondering if anyone had any information on him at all. It also mentions his father and mother's names.

Greg

Hi again, Ken. My email is: thebestwildangel@yahoo.com. So you say there were 2 Indian children born to van curler? Just curious as take a close look at my grandad Clarence, you can clearly see the indian blood & I've been asked myself, if I've got Indian blood & always answer yes, as Curtis's wife, May Hills claims to be 1/4 Shawnee, but that's another genealogical line I'm pursuing to another dead end. Write me with the info if you can & thank you for all your help. Kathy

Hey again. been looking all day for anything I could find & nothing still. Seems that I can't even find Lucy's father or mother. At Rootsweb it says she was married a 2nd time, but didn't list who, & that Matthew came of that marriage. This is so confusing, as the Van Curlers took the name of Cuyler as that was Lucy's maiden name? I got all this at rootsweb.com. I started looking as my family did a report years ago on the Cuylers. They even went to Cuyler New York, lol. In it, there's a page that says there may be some Indian blood somewhere, but haven't found anything to that nature yet. Guess I'll keep looking. Thanks for the info you did give me. Kathy

Hi, I, too, am looking for info on Matthew Cuyler, as he is my gggrandfather. I believe you may be directly related to me, as my grandfather was Clarence & my father is Martin Cuyler. Just any info on who Matthew's real dad is would be helpful, as I've come to a roadblock. I did find Laurin Hills heritage all the way back to 1548, but have also come to a roadblock on Ida Letta Hawleys lineage. Anything would be helpful. Thank you, Kathy Cuyler Austin

I came across a Bible yesterday that was given to Sidney and Matilda Cuyler. Here is what was wrote inside. Births: Estella Edna Cuyler 4-10-1875, Edward Elbert Cuyler 4-23-1877, Laura Mar Cuyler 12-27-1878, Sidney Thampson Cuyler 7-19-1881, Daisy Mildred Cuyler 4-7-1884, Then it skipped a line and here are more births, probably grandchildren. Helen Beatrice Cuyler 6-21-1910, Elsie Margaret Cuyler 11-2-1913, Elbert Allen Cuyler 7-14-1916. Here are the deaths: Fannie Cunningham Cuyler 8-23-1925, Edward Elbert Cuyler 7-1950, Bert Appleton of Ironwood Mich. 4-5-1951, Sidney Cuyler 7- 235-1955
