My husband's family are Czajkas from Middletown. His father is Edward Peter Czajka born in 1923 to Anthony (Anton) and Nellie Czajka (other children, Robert, Stacia, and Mary). I think Anton's brother was John Czajka. Both immigrated from Poland in 1915ish. Cant remember the year.

My grandfather, John, had a brother named Edward. I don't remember a lot about him, except I went to visit him a few times in the veterans hospital.

I'm pretty sure I remember he had kids, but I'm not sure if I ever met them.

was my grandfather. I have located his Passenger List stating that he came to Canada in 1927 aboard the Aurania. On this record he stated his home town as being Zarzecze. He was in the Polish Army before he left but he kept getting promoted so fast that he felt war was coming and he left. I know he had a rather large family (by today's standards) with around 7 sisters. I do believe that he had some land in Poland (left to him as he was the only male) but he transferred the land to one (or more) of his sisters, who had farmed it all her life, before he died. I'm wondering where he fits in the Czajka family tree. Any information would be appreciated.

Czajka/Cajka family in Ohio

Hi! I'm looking to connect with ancestors and descendants of Jacob CZAJKA, b. July 14, 1883 married ~1904 to Elizabeth GARWOL (had first wife named Helen, last name unknown). According to 1920/1930 census records, Jacob emigrated to the U.S. in 1907/1908. They ended up settling down in Lorain, Ohio.

They had the following children:
1) John P. Czajka (b. 11/22/1905, d. 10/11/1986)
2) James Paul Czajka (b. 5/10/1907, d. 9/13/1990) m. Marion Viola Long; machine operator at U.S. **my grandfather
3) Anna Czajka (b. ~1908) m. Thomas Gluebik, Jr. (last name spelling unsure) 6/19/1929 in Lorain, Ohio
4) Joseph Czajka (b. 2/6/1911, d. 7/25/1972)
5) Mary Czajka (b. 1/26/1913, d. 2/20/1913 of bronchial pneumonia)
6) Stanley Czajka (b. 1/10/1914, d. 4/2/1994 Avon Lake, OH) *changed last name to Sharkey
7) Mary Czajka (b. ~1915)
8) Walter Czajka (b. 1/20/1918, d. 12/1/1925 from a broken neck after being hit by a car)
9) Elizabeth Czajka (b. ~1920) m. last name DEMYAN

Eventually the z was dropped in our family and Czajka became Cajka. On Walter's death certificate, Jacob's and Elizabeth's birthplaces were listed as Przesiednica(which I think may be Przysietnica), Poland (though James' obit says he was born in Austria).

The death certificate for Mary Czajka (d. 2/20/13), Jacob's and Elizabeth's (last name spelled GARROL not Garwol)birthplaces are listed as Galiccia, Poland. It looks like Jacob signed the certificate as what looks like Jachob Czaia.

Jacob's certificate wasn't much more help other than his wife Elizabeth's name is spelled Elyzabet and his parents are listed as Albert Czajka and Elyzabet Sad*owsky (can't tell from handwriting if it's Saduowsky/Sadcowsky or something similar).

Jacob was a bolter at the shipyard and later a laborer at a brick company. Most of the boys in the family worked in the Lorain steel industry.

I haven't been able to track down what happened with the rest of Jacob's kids (my great aunts and uncles) as family records are sparse. Are there any descendants out there?

They were married October 26, 1908. Wojciech was married under the name Albertus Kapanowski. His parents are listed as Andrew and Katherine. Mary's parents are listed as Jacob and Kunegunda. Pastor was Fr. F. Kiery. Witnesses were John Kuczajda and Rosie Stefanska.

Go to Holy Cross and ask the caretaker to allow you to see the card index of all Kapanowski's buried there. You will see that they are brothers and sisters. Some with obituaries taped to the 3x5 cards.

Hope this helps.

I talked to my father and he said he remember your grandmother and grandfather, whom he said they called him Chet. I still have not found nothing on Sophie and Stanley Czajka and was wondering if you have any new information. All I have is the 1930 census of the family. There is a 1930 census also of Chester and Florence, it looks like they may have been living with Chesters Parents Daniel and Dora ??? One of these days I will make it up to Michigan to hopefully find alot more infomation

Dwayne....(I know your name because I've been trying to find you for TWO years!)....I believe your Sophie Czajka may be the sibling of Andrew, Jacob, MIchael, and Frank Czajka. Andrew lived on Longwood and the on Cicotte. Jacob, Michael and Frank lived on Hammond which is something like a block of St. Hedwig. Andrew and Jacob were the first Czajka's in Detroit and arrived about 1888/1889. They are residing on Rollin St. in 1890 with a Janinga family member who later resides with Michael Czajka. Czajka's in this family have also intermarried with Kwilos, Misiolek's and Kapanowski's. All arriving through Ellis Island and all buried in Holy Cross. Some family members changed their names to Cyers and resided in Dearborn later on. The sheriff of Taylor, I believe his name is Bob Czak, is descended from Michael Czajka

Please email me directly at jomilu2005 at juno dot com. I'm just about positive Sophie is their sister.

Thanks so much for the information. My dad thought it was great to at least know where Cyers came from. His sisters are in their mid 70's and had no idea where their dad got the name from. But it makes sense to me. I did see the photo and my dad is taking it to my aunts in Florida to compare it to their family photos. My aunt stays there 6 months out of the year and 6 months here in Dearborn. He believes there are many old photos. If there are, he will bring them back with him and I will most definately let you know. We do know that there are photos of the original Jacob, Andrew and Michael, their spouses and children. I will keep you posted. Once again, thanks a million.

Kim

If you were to look in the 1910/20 Polk directories for our Czajka families (and you are related to my husband, by the way), you would find that Czajka is listed on the far right hand side at the bottom of the page. At the top of the page is the name CYR. This is how both sides of the Czajka family ended up from the Polish "water bird" Czajka to Cyers - which is Anglo-Saxon. They found it at the top of their telephone book.

Email me at jomilu 2005 at juno dot com I have a photo, if you haven't seen it, of Jake Czajka, sr. and I believe his daughters are in the photo and so is his brother, Andrew Czajka. My father in law told me it was taken in Wyandotte.

Yes, there is another Jacob that decended from the original Jacob Czajka. He was born April 15, 1913. He was married to Della Wenzel. The first Jacob (b. 1860) had a son Laurence (b. 1877) who had a son Jacob (b. 1909) named after his grandfather. Sorry, I should have proof read my posting and explained it better. My great uncle Jacob (Jake) and his brother Joseph (my grandfather) had their last names changed to Cyers. My dad is Joseph Donald and his father was Joseph also, but never had a middle name. He did use his confirmation name of Alexander as a middle initial after many many years. They printed the wrong name in the obituaries when my grandfather (Joseph)died. Actually, it was kinda funny because all of my dad's friends thought he died because of the name Joseph Donald Cyers in the paper and showed up at the funeral thinking it was my dad and not my grandpa. Anyway, those are the only two of the Czajka's on my side that I know of first hand that changed their names.

This Czajka is not related to our Detroit line of Czajka's. Btw, Jacob Czajka who was the husband of Kunegunda never legally changed his name to Cyers. He is buried under the name Czajka. I went to the Kapanowski/Czajka family reunion about two years ago in Allen Park. Met Some of the family there. Is there another Jacob Czajka descended from the original? The original Jacob Czajka also has his name on his death certificate as Czajka, not Cyers.

My dad's great grandfather was Jacob Czajka (wife Kundegunda) My dad's grandfather was Laurence Czajka (wife Sophie Kapanowski) and his father was Joseph Czajka (wife Josephine Polkowski).
Hello. I'm working on my husband's Czajka family who were also from Detroit and lived on Cicotte off Michigan Ave. I have an Andrew Czajka who married Mary Slowinski in 1900. They are from Poland and had 13 children. Andrew's son, Alexander, lived in the Cicotte home most of his life (4022 Cicotte) and the home was sold just a few years ago. I have found that Andrew had a brother, Jacob Czajka (Jake) who lived in Wyandotte but also that the family attended St. Hedwig, the brother (and I believe there were sisters) moved further away and some attended St. Lawrence, John Cantius, and other churchs in Wyandotte. Our Czajka's are also buried in Holy Cross. I'm hoping to piece the family back together.

http://www.geocities.com/jomilu2001

PS: We have a female Czajka who married into the Chapiewski family. The name was later changed to Czajka. We also have Mycek, Micek, Rycek, Slowinski, Cyers (the Czajka name was changed to Cyers but never legally except for one son, Roman (Called Raymond) who changed his name to Cyers in a Detroit court).

i'm also trying to trace our family tree of Rycek. my great grandparents were Jan and Matilda (koffmann) Rycek. He came over from Poland in 1905, she came about 1910. For years we have been told about relatives in Cleveland Ohio and Detroit MI. Any idea if there's a connection?

Greg---

Jan "John" Czajka marriage to Karolina Rol(l), Chicago, 1914

I have a Jan “John” Czajka in my family tree who married my grandfather´s sister Karolina Rol(l) at St. John Cantius Church, Chicago, on February 18, 1914 (I have marriage certificate). According to the marriage cert Jan (John) Czajka was born 1889 in Ochotnica/Galicia

I don´t know what happened to John Czajka, but in 1940 when my grandfather died his sister´s name appears in the obit as Karolina Chrobak, she is married to Jacub Chrobak, and in 1969 her name appears again in her brother Joseph Roll´s obit as Karolina Roebuck, so she must have changed her name to Roebuck between 1940 and 1969.

I would be interested in any information on Czajka children from this marriage and what happened to John Czajka as well as on any Roll-Chrobak/Roebuck children.
Have you tried contacting the town hall in Middletown, Ct. I came across your surnames while doing research on the Wolak surname. The marriage records list the groom, his parents the brides and her parents. Your names appear in the birth, marriage and death records.
Hope this helps.

Peter and Ann Czajka of Detroit 1930-?

I am looking for information on Peter and Ann Kondziolka Czajka and their children. Peter and Ann are my husband's grandparents. Both were born in Poland. Known children were Rose, Joe, Adella, Leo, Stella and Alfons. Know they lived in Detroit. Peter worked in Auto industry. Several children put in Foster care or Children's Home after Ann hospitalized. Alfons placed in foster home in Fowlerville, Michigan. Alfons (Al) was my husbands father. Know several of children remained in Detroit area into the late 1950-60 then have had no contact. Any information would be appreciated.
