G’day,

[Modified in some places from actual sent to list to suit audience of this message board]

It has been a while since we’ve sent out a broadcast message to our “Interested in Czarnik Surname” distribution list. Partly because a new computer meant using a new e-mail client and the distribution list was difficult to bring across. Since we knew we needed to automate the list eventually we thought now was a good time.

We have enlisted the aid of the mechanism that Rootsweb uses for its thousands of mailing lists. It also gives us the advantage that the name Czarnik will appear on their master list of surnames that people have an interest in. The bottom line is we, the subscribers to the list, will get more “exposure” since the fact the list exists is public and therefore people researching the name or its variations are more likely to come across it.

However, we didn’t want to sacrifice privacy or get an increase in spam (unwanted e-mail) for the sake of that “exposure”. So we have been VERY particular about the way we set up the list. First, to subscribe visit http://src.czarnik.org/add_remove_from_list.htm . You will get a separate “Welcome” message that will tell you how to remove yourself from the list should you ever wish to do so. Secondly, we have set the list to be “moderated”. “Moderated” simply means we get all the messages first and anything that is spam or otherwise inappropriate won’t get forwarded on to you all.

To send a message to everyone on the list, send e-mail to CZARNIK-L@rootsweb.com

This also gives us an opportunity to remind you about the Czarnik Surname Resource Centre (SRC). You will recall it is a web site that will hopefully act as a focal point for all research about the surname Czarnik. It also has some info about family tree / genealogy research in general. For more detail visit the site at http://src.czarnik.org/ . If you are, or become a frequent visitor to the site, always check the “What’s New” button / section, as we will make sure that any changes or additions are referenced there so you don’t have to wander through the whole site trying to figure out what’s different since the last time you visited. Also feel free to offer ANY contributions. They can be data of any type that you want stored someplace, or maybe links to other Czarnik related family trees or sites. (Only thing we ask, if it is a personal site you want a link to, you put a link to the Czarnik SRC in return!)

Some of the things referenced on the Czarnik SRC are of course the “Interested in Czarnik Surname” mailing list, the Czarnik Surname Message Board (see Surname Queries on the Czarnik SRC) and our Archives of material that may otherwise not have a home (see Archives under Surname Queries on the Czarnik SRC).

We will shortly be uploading some material recently sent to Larry’s Dad from a relation in Poland about a branch of the family who changed their name to Czerny. But we know they are a direct descendant of Larry’s great grandfather, Michal Czarnik. Aside from the wealth of info about a large branch of the tree still living in Poland, even the few additional words about Michal Czarnik are great to find out about.

It’s times like this that really excite us about studying the family tree. We are glad you allow us to share it with you and look forward to sharing your excitement as you send us info.

Warmest Regards,
Larry & Colleen Czarnik
