Yes, Gussie Fellers was married to my grandfather, William Finas Dabbs, before he married my grandmother, Frances Viola Shipp. I think your grandmother may be who my mother referred to as her Aunt Sis. My mother said her name was Mary Frances Narcissa Dabbs. And she was her favorite aunt.

Dabbs Indian Connection

I was told there is an Indian link within the Dabbs family. The Dabbs I am researching came from South Carolins in the early 1800's and settled in Jersey County, Illinois. Does anyone have any information? Thanks.

My name is Dabbs

Hello, Has your family ever thought to do DNA on the men in your family who directly carry the name Dabbs. I had my brother do this for me since I am a female. I have been doing research on my family since 1995. I was trying to find out if family lore was true; that the surname we carried as a family was not correct. Several branches of Crutcher lines here in Texas have oral history that our name was changed. I found our family lore to be factual.

We went from Dabbs to Crutcher sometime before the 1870 Texas Census. Through late nights on the computer, my husband and I pounding concrete, and gut feelings on certain “finds” which paid off, I did indeed uncover the mystery of our family name; here in Texas we should have been recorded as Dabbs. I did indeed match in the DNA markers to be of Dabbs lineage. I matched almost gene marker for gene marker with another Dabbs male who did his DNA testing. If he had chose not to check out his DNA, all of my research would have had no substantial proof. This DNA proves I am a Dabbs by birth.

There are people who carry the Dobbs surname that sometime back in history their name was corrupted by enumerators, their own families changing the spelling to fit the community or whatever. These Dobbs are researching the wrong surname. They have hit brick walls because they do not match any family lines of Dobbs. They would benefit by DNA testing which would show that they match with the families of Dabbs. This would give them new avenues to search family histories for their folks. This has happened for Dabbs also. They may think that they have the surname Dabbs, but back in history the surname was corrupted from the surname DOBBS.

I am now trying to connect with as many Dabbs men to see if more DNA can be added to the FamilyTree DNA website. It must be a Dabbs male (no Dabbs women will work) who descends from generation to generation, grandfather Dabbs, son Dabbs, and then grandson Dabbs, etc. The more we have that do DNA testing will help us all identify, from the many different branches of Dabbs, which particular line of Dabbs we descend from. I descend from Joseph and Nanny Dabbs of VA. Of course there are many, many different Dabbs lines that have branched off from Joseph and Nanny.

Wars, Civil War, and courthouse burnings, and female descendants have hindered people from finding out just who they descend from, (couples who do not have any children but females their line “daughter’s out.” But DNA opens back up the doors for genealogist who have been at a brick wall in their research. Female descendants who have brothers can do as I did and get a brother to have his DNA checked against other Dabbs men.

My brother's (and my :) DNA did indeed match with another branch of Dabbs who trace back to Joseph and Nanny Dabbs.

With official documents lost forever to history, a person can find out who he/she descends from by this simple method of swabbing a cheek and sending it off to FamilyTree DNA lab. That company (probably the first company, who knows?) has more people who joined so therefore more people to compare with. That is why I chose that lab. But there are other DNA testing groups out there.

Please talk this over with your male Dabbs about doing this as a family project and then everyone helping with the cost. It is getting cheaper each year to do DNA testing. Go to FamilyTree DNA website and see what it would cost a family who uses just one sibling to contribute DNA. If all chipped in together the floodgates of your personal history might just comeback to life again! DNA testing may not give you name for name, but with comparison of others who have had DNA done, it can show relationships to other Dabbs out there (or other DOBBS). Because my surname was not Dabbs but my personal research showed that we were, the DNA concluded that my brother’s 36 markers matched with the surname Dabbs. I now have connections with a Dabbs’ family. I do have this person’s historical lineage found on the computer. It does prove that I am blood related to this group of people. Blood does not lie and my family here in Texas connects with Dabbs people who lived in the 1700s and 1800s in VA, TN, and SC. Their recorded history is my recorded history. Yes, we are from different branches of Dabbs, but the two branches takes us back to Joseph and Nanny Dabbs of Virginia.

The more people who do DNA testing and have brick walls because of missing legal paperwork, no family bibles, no burial records, and etc. the more chance of finding closer family links. Our gene markers will help us to link-up again and uncover the lost lines of our families.

I hope I have not bored you, but I love the thought that our Dabbs name could someday be linked together like the spider-web effect of the roads in ole’ Virginny! Through DNA we can find the areas and countries of our origins. The middle missing links of our families might just be found and link us back to the land and people of our family members who made the hard choice of leaving their country to come to America and find the freedoms they heard could be had here!

Thanks,
Dale

Thanks so much for the information. If you have a email address or a cell phone that can receive pictures i'll be happy to send them to you. I actually found the huntboard in a antique shop in Coats, NC.. When I got it home I tool out the Drawers and written on the inside backboard was the name "Wm Dabbs" written twice,, I've matched his signature to his Civil war records, and also the words "South Carolina" as well. Other words are written but i've not been able to make them out. Feel Free to call me 864 399 2021. Thanks Tim

This may be a second reply to this, if so I apologize! I would love to see a picture of this hunt board! His trade of record was farmer, but his father was a wagon maker and his allied family, the McKinneys, were carpenters. He definitely could have made this. Would love to hear where you found this piece.

The father of James Samuel Dabbs born, 1840, is James H Dabbs and Celia Caroline Williams...my GGGrandfather. We finally found the "missing" 1850 US census record. The name was transcribed incorrectly as 'Dates'. All other names check out with numerous other records and family histories. Shortly after the 1850 census, the wife of James H must have died. He remarried within the year in the same County (Chambers, AL) and then purchased land in Tallapoosa Co., AL. Children from first marriage and children with Caroline are on the 1855 Alabama Census andthe 1860 US Census. And the witness to James Samuel Dabbs marriage was his sister's husband...another verification.

Some other interesting information: James Samuel Dabbs, his brother Asa Dabbs, brother George M Dabbs and their father James H Dabbs all served in the Civil War. George M never made it home and there is no record of any burial.

As I recall, one of our Dabbs cousins has a copy of a DNA test which shows we have absolutely no "blood" connection to John Wilkes Booth. Joseph Wilkes's daughter Junia also has Wilkes as her middle name but no idea yet about John Wilkes being a family friend or neighbor or whatever.

Also, we have no record of a Cyrus or Cilas but that doesn't mean much. If you have a connection let us know. Thanks for your input.

Joe

The last name was transcribed incorrectly as "Dates", therefore hasd gone unnoticed. James Samuel (b. 1840) is the son of James H.
Guess what? I was filing more paper work I had copied from libraries and such and came across the names of Cryus and Cilas in the documents establishing a new Texas county, Bowie, out of Red River County. It lists different reports of Unconditional Certificates and Conditional Certificates. and I quote from No. 2 Report of Unconditional Certificate:

"Cyrus Dabbs, Legal heir of Cilas Dabbs
Cond. Cert. No.66, Bowie Co., Cl 4 for 320,
dated 7 Feb 1842. Jan 11, 1848"

"Cyrus Dabbs legal heir of Cilas Dabbs
Cond Cert No. 270, Red River Co. 320ac
Wit: Jas Clements & Saml Harrison"

Legal heir as to how! I have Cyrus Dabbs in two Texas Census. One is transcribed as C DOBBS though. But I think it is one and the same.

Another name shinned out at me:

No 1. Unconditional Certificates
Cl 2 No 5
"A.J. Booth 358 Nov 1, 1838
Wit: Jonathan W Dabbs & Henry D. Mason"

What do we know about any connection of Joseph Wilkes Dabbs, John Wilkes Dabbs and the famous John Wilkes Booth!!!

So it would seem that a member of the Booth family came to Texas in 1838. That's why I love genealogy so much, ssurprises around every turn! :)

Dabbs in Early Pioneer Texas

Hello everyone,

Here I go with some tidbits that might get our genealogy research minds agoing!!!! I have been working dilgently with all my paper info and putting them as best as I can (or can guess) into the right notebooks I have on all my Dabbs. It is getting easier and easier to recall so much of my data that I am able to put my fingers on it fairly quick.

I have made a loosleaf notebook on the Dabbs of Titus, Hopkins County, Texas (Sulphur Springs, Joseph W Dabbs, Dr. Ellen Lawson Dabbs group) Texas. Jonathan W Dabbs received land grants.

I have a page from a book about Land Grants that show 3 Dabbs acquiring land grants in 1838,1839:

Jonathan W Dabbs Aug 3, 1838 May 3 1841
Silas Dabbs over 17 years then says Feb 1842
Cyrus Dabbs Dec 2, 1839 Nov 21 1853

I did not write down what label the dates were, but if I was guessing I would say when they got the grant and then the other column the date it is totally their land. Just guessing though. Need to revisit the page to see what the date columns mean.

Are these men 3 brothers? 3 cousins

Are they children of George Dabbs and Sarah?

Is this the Silas who was in Limestone Co, Ala?

Isn't this Jonathan W Dabbs/wife Sarah, the father-n-law to Joseph W Dabbs of Sulphur Springs whose wife was Sara E. and then Sarah died and he married a second wife Dr. Ellen Lawson? Or was it his father and not father-n-law!

Isn't this Joseph W Dabbs the grandchild of Joseph and Judith Tankersley Dabbs and his father was John (or Joseph Wilkes ??:) Wilkes Dabbs who died in 1859?

It seems that this Joseph was a Dabbs and he married a Dabbs girl. I really have not got all my notebooks and flipped back and forth to see how it goes. I think I may be at a place where some of all the confusion on this family in Titus/Hopkins County Texas is cleared up in my mind???

Somebody help, give me some more input on these Dabbs men in early Texas. lol

How many Silas Dabbs are there, by the way. And who are the Cyrus Dabbs???

On another census in Texas the enumerator spells Cyrus' name as DOBBS! But the land grants is transcribed as Dabbs.

Johathan Dabbs age on the 1860 TX Census is 60!! Born in 1800 then, maybe. Joseph W Dabbs age on census is 28, 1832 birth then.

Help!
Re: DNA Project

Hello again Catie,

I have my answer through DNA! I am a Dabbs by blood. My ancestor did change his name to Crutcher from Dabbs. My 2009 FTDNA Y-DNA test matched me with another person who did the Y-DNA test. His surname is DABBS!!!! I am so happy. I'm still over the moon about this and I received my email from FTDNA Saturday.

I am so thankful my brother agreed to do this test that only male relatives can do. There is no broken links when you do it from male to male. Thank goodness I had brothers! If the name is changed, no matter. The blood from father to son on down the generational line is the true test. My brother's blood is Dabbs blood. He matched with another Dabbs blood line.

This Dobbs Project has only one person with the Dabbs blood line included in this DNA project. My brother's blood. Sure wish more Dabbs would join to see how the Dabbs/Dobbs surname really reads. The more Dabbs who test will then be lined up against the Dobbs who have tested and who are joining. That's the only way we will ever be able to learn if we have had our names changed by enumerators, by offical documents written out by employees who didn't really know, or by just ordinary people deciding to change the "o" and "a" because of the geographical area they lived in and what the prevalent name resided there.

If you know of Dobbs male relatives who have received their Dobbs name from each generation without going through a female relative then this Y-DNA test is for them. In other words, if a female had a child and gave it her last name of Dobbs instead of the baby's daddy, it would not work. It has to be from father to son on down the generational line.

Let's get going everyone and see how all of this shakes out. Just go to the FTDNA website and join the Dobbs Project. You can get prices from them and if you go through the manager of the DOBBS Project, there is a discount. At least there was when I joined in 2009.

Y-DNA Results

Hello everyone,

June 2009 I had my brother submit our DNA so that I could see what surname I matched. My name is Crutcher, but that was from a name change when my ancestor came from TN to TX and took the name Crutcher. Yesterday, February 25, 2012 FTDNA emailed me with a match. My first match for me! My brother's DNA matched all but 2 markers with the person who submitted his DNA. The surname was Dabbs!!! So I finally have some concrete proof that our family name back in TN was Dabbs.

I am very excited about that. It confirms what I have researched and thought out with the data I have compiled for years. It is very exciting to see my DNA markers lined up under his dna markers and to see such a close match. So our family of Crutchers here in Texas are Dabbs in TN and even earlier in VA. I love it. My father would be proud that the family story passed down through 3 generations would prove to be a true story.

I am in a DNA project with the Dobbs surname. My participation was to see if Dabbs and Dobbs surnames were somehow interchanged with their spellings by people who wrote the original records and people who transcribed original records in Census and other data. I joined the DNA Dobbs Project so mine could prove that my family was Dabbs all along. We were Crutchers by official documents all through Texas records for years. In 1865/66 it was very easy to come to this wide open frontier and change your name and leave your past behind. But we were Dabbs by blood and this has been proven by my brother's DNA test! yay

I am now pleading the case for you Dabbs researchers to join the Dobbs project and see if we interchange with Dobbs DNA and what areas of the country we hail from. It also could very well be a way to break down some brick walls. The Dabbs who join this group could be the missing link for so many Dobbs or so many Dabbs researchers. You could be following down the Dabbs line, but really are Dobbs and visa versa. This can be found out through DNA like it did for me. I do not match a single Crutcher, but I match real well with the Dabbs surname!

If you go to FTDNA website you will see there are projects ongoing with lots of different surnames. There is only one Dobbs group I believe and NO Dabbs. Check with this website and see how affordable this is becoming. If you check in regularly you can get it done when there is a sale on. If you will check with Stan Bevers who is the project manager for the Dobbs group he can give you a special price when you join the Dobbs group. At least it use to be that way. Check with him and see. Lets get the ball rolling faster in deciding if we are Dabbs or Dobbs, if our DNA hails from NC or VA. We can only do this if we have more and more people join and gather this DNA in one big group and compare. Now I know this does not pin point, say, who our grandfathers were or etc. But there is no telling how much info it may clear up.

I have a ancestor named Patience who I believe was one time owned by Abner Dabbs. At her death she was Patience Gray, and was also owned by Elijah Gray...On her son's death certificate, her maiden named was Dabbs. The only (Dabbs) slave owner in Greene County around 1840 was Mr. Abner Dabbs.
I am the grandson of George H. Dabbs, photographer from Morgantown Kentucky mentioned in the 1910 census. I have many of the original photographs as well as several painted copies that he did. I believe my father George H. Jr. visited some relatives in the Dallas and Richardson Tx area sometime in the early to mid 1980's. I have been doing some research myself but it has been a slow process. I will email you soon with some information. Meanwhile, if anyone else has any information of Dabbs relatives tied to Rev. Richard of Nashville, please let me know.

Is this the Dabbs line from Nathaniel Dabbs? If so, I would love to see the informtaion related to this topic as well. I heard that Nathaniel listed slaves in his will and was interested in looking farther into that. If you are willing to share let me know.
