Re: Alexander Dacus Timeline

Effie Maudie Wilson's death date is 2 Sept. 1936. She married William Robert Laxton (14 Feb. 1874 - 4 Jan. 1963) on 2 Dec. 1900. Rebecca Ann Starnes's father was Moses Starnes (1798 - 1852) and her mother was Mary Chandler (1796 - 1838). Interestingly enough, I believe both of the Rebecca Starnes' in the 1850 census is the same person. Can't figure out why she wasn't living with her husband though because the census was taken after they married.

Thank you so much for your additions to the Alexander Dacus timeline. I'll add Lavina's daughter and the other information you gave me to what I already have on line.
Also - since I now know there were several women named Rebecca Starnes in Tipton County in the right time period, I will be adding their data to the 1850 census information in the time line. Perhaps you know which Rebecca is the correct one? I'll have that census data up by tomorrow.

Phyllis Solter

I am decended from Alexander's daughter Lavina. Lavina had another daughter named Effie Maudie Wilson, born 10 Nov. 1885. Effie was my great grandmother. Effie is buried in Crigger Cemetery in Munford, Tennessee. She married Robert Laxton. Lavina's husband Peter remarried to a woman named Rhoda. Peter and Rhoda are buried in unmarked graves in Poplar Grove cemetery in Drummonds, TN. Cemetery records indicate that he died in 1915. Your timeline was a great help to me. I didn't know there were books about Alexander's line. Hopefully I can find them.

Re: Isham DACUS -- An Elaboration

You may have located this information in the years since your post but although I am NOT an experienced Dacus researcher, I think I can state that there was a relationship, possibly father/son between Isham and Thomas Dacus.

"Newton County Georgia Estate Records, Vol. I, A-K, 182-1900" bu John O. Bruno, pages 79 and 80, contains an abstract of the 38 documents in the estate file of Thomas Dacus who died intestate in 1837. It appears the Thomas's heirs were his widow and 7 children. The only children that I can positively identify from the abstract are Paschal Dacus, Susan Ann Dacus and Milly Lyle. Paschal and Susan Anne were minors and there is record of appontment of guardians for them. Milly Lyle appears to be a married daughter. She received a distribution of $2201.46. Paschal's guardian received the same amount. The other person who received that amount was one John Phillips. My guess is that he was a son-in-law, receiving his wife's share. Milly and John both received their shares on April 28, 1840. John Phillips is my interest in this document as I have an ancestor John Phillips who with his wife Louisa moved from Newton Co GA to Fayette Co. GA in 1839 or 1840. I have never been able to document Louisa's maiden name and I wonder if she may have been a daughter of Thomas Dacus.

Isham H. Dacus was a purchaser at the estate sales on Nov. 15 and Dec. 5, 1837.

I will quote verbatim a sentence from the abstract that I think will interest you: "John S. Stanton in one of his Anual Returns as Guardian shows a payment to him in Marcho f1842 for $3.44 he spent on expenses to South Carolina in obtaining testimony in a case pending in Newton Superior Court AMY DUNN vs. P. REYNOLDS, Administrator of Delany Dacus and others 1/7 part."

That reference to 1/7 part is what leads me to believe that there were 7 heirs other than the widow, From these papers I only come up with Paschal, Susan Anne, Milly and whoever John Phiilips represented.

I think that if we could see a record of the lawsuit we might learn more.

Is Isham H. Dacus the one you are interested in? I don't know. Why is there no record of his being paid $2201.46? I don't know? Could he have taken his share in discounted purchase prices at the sales? I don't know? Or is he another Isham Dacus altogether?

I hope this is helpful. If you can shed light on the John Phillips relationship, I'd like to hear it.

She was my 3G-grandmother and I would love to find more information on her. I know she died at age 29, probably in childbirth. I decend from her daughter Julia Anna Duckworth who married Jim Ligon and lived in West Minster SC.

If you happen to know anything about that line, I would really appreciate your contacting me at sjsh47@hotmail.com.

Thanks, Susan

Dacus, Ben in 1929 Richmond, VA yearbook

RE: The Marshallite, 1929 John Marshall High School yearbook (Richmond, VA)

Dacus, Ben

This yearbook lists the members of the Senior class of 1929, faculty members, members of the Corps of Cadets, and many members of various clubs (not all). Unfortunately, it does not list the names of the members of the Junior, Sophomore or Freshmen classes (only officers listed for those classes).

I extracted all of the names (& some other information) from the yearbook & have put them on my genealogy web site (total of 13 web pages, containing over 1,900 records; sorted alphabetically by surname).

The link to the first page of these extracts on my web site is:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/family/r...

Or it can be accessed through the "General Research" link on the main page at:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/index.ht...

Please note that I put all kinds of genealogy information on my web site, not just data about the families I am researching.
John and William Dacus

I have John Dacus who died in Texas in 1904(per the death certificate that My GG aunt Thelma Futch had) and was appx 50yrs old. I believe he is connected to William Henry Dacus who was born 1/12/1847 in Tenn and died 2/18/1912. William's d/c shows his father as J.W.
Dacus born in Tenn (and mothers maiden name as Hubbard). both John Dacus and William Dacus's father. Any help would be greatly appreciated in helping to piece this together.
John Dacus

Good news for Owens researchers, maybe....
My sister and I, while tracking down all the Dacus' in the 1930 census records, have discovered an indexing typo. in Abington, Pa
Ancestry.com has a listing for a
John Dacus 67 b.NJ, wife Hannah J 53 b. Pa, and 4 sons, variously born in Pa and NJ.
All of these take their surname as continuation of the head, John.
[Year 1930, Roll T626_2080, Pg 28A, ED 11, Image 0932...
lines 36-41 Abington Tnshp ,Pa, 233 Roberts Ave.]

Upon examination of the photocopies, we noticed the handwritten D for Dacus didn't match the D in the next surname down (McDermott), Donald, or the Daughter in relationship col. The census taker's writing is almost illegible for this surname, but the first letter is almost definitely not a D. Comparing with the other capital letters on the page, it comes closer to matching the O in the Own/Rent col, or Ohio, all found on that same sheet. With that as a first letter, the second letter starting below the line, and a fairly likely s for the last,... our best guess is that these folks' name is actually Owens.

Thus it looks like we have OWENS hiding among the Dacus'.

If in your research you find any Dacus' hiding out as a Owens, or a fairly well confirmed Owens misspelled as Dacus elsewhere, please let me know, AND/or post it to the DACUS board.
Our known lines go from Va about 1700, thru SC, Tn, Ark, Tx, with branches in Ga, Al, Ms, Ok. We have no positive immigration records, nor reasonable family lines before that time back into Europe, so our name looks like an Americanization of some other name, likely British, and my current bets are on Dacres. Thus we don't have the continual immigration flow your folks obviously are dealing with.

Hope this helps clearing up some of your branches!

Thanks,
Doyle Dacus
doyle@dacus.net
Dacus family researcher

I've just begun to research my wife's family in northern Georgia. Did the Archie you speak of live in Summerville, Chattooga county? If so, he may be my wife's great grandfather.

Here's the line I'm looking at:
Archie Dacus m. unknown
Lounette "Nettie" Dacus m. Lester Hunter (Abt 1918)
Hugh Hunter
My wife.

I would appreciate any info you have on Archie and his first wife (Nettie's mother) including the photo you mentioned. The 1920 census of Summerville, Chattooga, GA has Archie's wife as Jane. According to my father-in-law, Jane was not Nettie's mother.

Thanks for any help.
Rick

Arter Dacus

My mother who would be 86 if she were alive wrote down in her papers that someone from South Carolina was writing a book about Arter, not Arthur Dacus..My great grandmother was nicknamed little Ida from this Ida Chapman..they were pretty sure that this was the name. I don't know who the man was who wrote to my mother to ask for information, because my stepmother won't let me have the papers. My great great great grandfather was Thomas Anthony Dacus the son of Elizabeth Cogburn..I am pretty sure that she really is his mother..I am also sure from your account that we are kin.The census in 1850 lists Arter 34, Elizabeth 21 living in Pickens Co. S.C. Pascall, John, William, and James are from the first wife (she could be someone other than Ida) Arch N is the first I believe of Elizabeth's children. Thomas's wife Martha Matilda Chapman, was called Little Ida..she was born 1-21-1861..she is buried in Grice Texas..I have been to her grave..Thomas Anthony b 3-12-1860 is also buried at Grice d 10-17-1939. I believe that Arter married Elizabeth in 1848--Archibald Nathaniel born 1849-1928 buried in Grice, Texas..I can give you more information if you wish..later. Linda

Dear Dorothy,
Something for you to research...The World Family Tree lists a great deal of information supplied by a Mrs. John Nemoe. It is as follows:Archibald Dacus's father was Nathaniel; Nathaniel fought in the Revolutionary War--He was born in 1747 perhaps in VA. He died in 1835.He was married twice--the first time to Elizabeth Thackston--the second time 1781 to Elizabeth Glenn who died in 1840. The two known children of Nathaniel were Archibald, and John A.; Nathaniel's father was John Dacus,
Sr. his mother was Mara Atkins. Nathaniel settled in Greenville, SC 1797.
died 1835;John Dacus, Sr's father was William Dacus, his mother was Mary Smith.Their children were John W. Dacus, Jr and Nathaniel. Mrs Nemoe says that William was born 1675 in England and married in 1700 in either England or Maryland??? William changed his name from Dicus to Dacus. He and Mary Smith had at least five sons: Edward Dacus, William Dacus, Thomas Dacus, James Dacus, and John Dacus (Sr.) This all remains to be proved...I assume that she has proof, but I have not done so yet. happy hunting.
Dorothy, do you have Elizabeth's Cogburn line..I don't and I would love to have it. I have written in my notes that Elizabeth had 7 children 1. Archibald Nathaniel (he is buried in Upshur co. Tx in Grice cemetery 1849-1928, 2. Beadie @1852, Harriet @1854, George Henry @1856, Robert Anderson (buried in Upshur co. Tx in Grice cemetery)born:
9-18-1858 d. 1941,Thomas Anthony b 3-12-1860 d. 10-17-1939 (also buried in Upshur co, Tx in the Grice cemetery), Elbert @ 1862 . The three buried in Upshur have tombstones from which I copied the information. I am perfectly willing to accept any corrections to my sometimes jumbled notes. Thanks your cousin Linda

I am not a descendant of the Dacus' family; however, do have a tidbit for you.

From The Georgia Black Book: "M. A. Harrison, page 159, #63, Governor's Proclamation Book, 1854-1869. In Walton County, 19 May, Wesley T. Dacus was murdered by M. A. Harrison. Issued 6 June 1864. Harrison is about 35 years old, fair complexion, blue eyes, stout built, 5'10", weight about 160 lbs. He speaks with ease and fluency and is intelligent and well informed. He had a large beard when he left and was formerly engaged as an agent for the government in Atlanta."

From another source: he is listed a a Federal Marshal.

Dacus in Mississippi

I am searching for the parents of Robert James Dacus, born in 1868 in Mississippi. Unfortunately, all I know is that he records in the 1920 and 1930 Census that both parents were born in Mississippi, as well as Robert...anyone with any information would be gladly appreciated...

John Dacus
I have been hitting a brick wall forever I think. The only information that I
have is John Dacus died in Texas in 1904(per the death certificate) and was
appx 50yrs old. I believe he is connected to William Henry Dacus who was born
1/12/1847 in Tenn and died 2/18/1912. Williams d/c shows his father as J.W.
Dacus who may have been both John Dacus and William Dacus's father. Any help
would be greatly appreciated in helping to piece this together.
Just starting to research Dacus family history. My grandfather, Melvin Dacus lived around Walnut Ridge, AR for a while, which is where he met my grandmother (Pauline Baker Dacus Garner). They ended up in CA and married, had three children (One my dad) but divorced after several years. I'm curious about the lineage and where the Dacus family is originally from. I know that his father was J.A. Dacus, Jr. son of Hiram Dacus. I know that Melvin's family mostly stayed in Calif. Since he didn't raise my dad, I don't know much about that side of the family. Please email me at scott-n-shelley@cableone.net if you have any info.
