Hi Gail, I just saw your posting. I remember your grandmother Inez well. I visited her along with my mother, Nellie (a granddaughter of Nellie Dacy Cochran, sister to your great grandfather James Dacy) about 10 years ago. She drove us to the Drew Ranch Cemetery in Folsom where James Dacy is buried. I would love to see whatever information you have on James Dacy. It has been very difficult to trace him back to Ireland, and the immigration and/or estate documents might help. John Dacy, who you mentioned in your posting, was James and Bridget's oldest son. I have a picture of him taken as a young man.

I wanted to correct myself on the naturalization papers. They were for the gg grandfather on my grandmother's side of the family and not for James Dacy. =(

I would love to see the photo you have of Bridget Dacy. Hopefully I can find some treasures to share about others in the family.

Gail

My G Grandmother was the same way, but I decided it was something to be proud of! The Dacy family is tough and times were very hard, they found a way to make a living when many people were not able to do so. Very proper people lately seem to enjoy telling me just how proper their backgrounds are...and I so enjoy the looks on their faces when I say "oh, well my GG Grandparents used to run bootleg whiskey!" Sometimes they have the gaul to say "well we all have things in our past we are not proud of" and at that I just have to say, "I am extremely proud of my ancestors...they were WONDERFUL" Bootlegging was just a matter of supply and demand after all. I say- give the people what they want! There could never have been a fabulous juke joint without a bootlegger out their supplying it with liquid inspiration.

That's funny about the bootleg whiskey. My great grandmother was reputedly a very proper lady, and I was told she was somewhat chagrined about Aunt Dode's history in that regard. She didn't want it discussed around the family, and my father used to tease her about it!

I know that we have notes taken from my great-grandmother, Nellie Dacy, about her parents' deaths. My recollection is that James had some kind of sudden illness. He was buried at Folsom, rather than next to his wife in Kenton, because of inclement weather (snow, I think). Although it was a mystery for a long time where he was buried (when my Aunt Frances went back to look there was some suggestion that cemetery records in the area had been lost during a flood), we have since discovered a newspaper account verifying that James was buried at the Drew Ranch cemetery outside Folsom.

As I am sure you know there is a LOT of history in our family of bootleg whiskey making and selling....your side made it and my side sold it.
Please email me at- lea-ann@cox.net and we can exchange numbers.

Lea Ann,
I'm somewhat new to genealogy but I have a ton of information that I am still aquiring through enheritance. My gg-grandfather was James Dacy. I'm trying to find the paperwork I have on him. I have copies of the court papers when he died and his assets were in probate. The next of kin petitioning for his assets was John Dacy. I'm not sure what relation but I assumed he was a brother.
I know I have James Dacy's actual naturalization papers when he immigrated to the United States that should have a ton of information for us and when I find those I will contact you again.

James' oldest son, also named James, was my great-grandfather. He married Dora Metcalf on 12/11/1902 in Clayton, NM. They had 12 children all of whom I have full names with birth/death dates. My grandfather, Lauren Dacy was 3rd youngest. His daughter, Laureen Dacy is my mother.

I'm sure I have a lot of names and dates we could trade.

Gail Poesy
Dacy lumber yard was in Harvard Illinois, in McHenry County. This is indeed close to the Wisconsin border. Tim Dacy was the owner. It burned down at one point and I believe Timothy brought the business back and ran it for some time. I do not know if the business is still operating.

Good luck

Gregory,

You and I are something like second cousins, once removed. Nellie Dacy Cochran was my great-aunt (sister to my grandfather, Cornelius). Your great-aunt Frances Nelson was my first cousin, once removed, etc. I have doing genealogical research on the Dacy family for a couple of years now, and have acquired a good bit of material on James and Bridget, most of their offspring (my great-aunts and uncles), and subsequent lines. My goal is to discover who James' and Bridget's parents were, and where in Ireland they came from. I have received information recently that James arrived with his parents about 1841 (he would have been about 2 years old). Any suggestions where to focus research?

Ralph

I am Don's (and your) cousin (my dad, Ralph Dacy, Sr. was your dad's uncle). Don (he was known as Donnie in those days) and Gail lived with us during my junior year at Raytown High School.
My GG Grandfather was Cornelius James Dacy, who was mostly called "Con", his sons were cornelius James Dacy and Ralph Dacy etc. Ralph Dacy Sr was my Great Uncle, and So I would suppose we are third cousins. You see Cornelius James Dacy Jr was my G Grandfather. Your Grandfather Ralph Sr used to live in Kansas City with his second wife Francis. And when I was a child we would go see them all the time.

Our GGG Granparents are Lucy Bridget Crahan Dacy and James Dacy. If you look for these names in the world family tree tab above you will see all the family tree information I have posted.

James and Lucy came here in the 1850's from Ireland and were married in Washington DC in 1861.

Lea Ann

I am trying to figure out who he came here (the US) with if anyone and where in Clare he is from.

I know that he named one of his children Cornelius, and Cornelius named one of his children Cornelius James Dacy. I am not 100% positive if the name has changed from Dacey.

I suspect that Cornelius is most likely a family name and some sort of clue about another relative, perhaps an older brother or a father.

Any thoughts or suggestions about how I could research other Dacey's or Dacy's in Clare? I have been all over the web.....but the Irish archive sites seem sort of nun-user friendly!

Thanks
Lea Ann

We've located the marriage record for James and Lucy Bridget in Washington, D.C. (1861) but still have no further information on just when they were born. The Kenton cemetery photo of Lucy Bridget's grave is indeed hers, but James' is a memorial tablet erected by my great-aunt, Frances Nelson (her mother was Nellie Dacy). James' actual grave is in an abandoned cemetery outside of Folsom N.M. that's now part of a cattle ranch. There's no marker.

Recent information that I have received is that his father, our great-grandfather, James (Bridget) came to the US with his parents in 1841. I am pursuing that lead now. I will be happy to share any discoveries with you.

If he were still alive he would be in his alte 60's or early 70's. he was born in March some time. His adopted parent names are William Micheal and Mildred Dacy.

I belong to the Australian branch of the Dacy family arrived in Victoria in 1851. We know that our ancestor from Ireland was one John Daicy of County Cork. Have you come across this spelling in your research? We do not know why one of his children (1st generation Australian) chose to change his surname to Dacy. It may be that he deliberately reverted to a "true" spelling or was simply exerting his independence! Any information on the Dacys or Daicys in Cork would be a great starting point to get this name business sorted out once and for all.

Cheers

Is anyone researching the Dacy clan in McHenry County, IL. They came to the area in the 1840-50's from Cork, Ireland. My strating point is Jeremiah "Jerry" Dacy who married Hannah O'Neil. They had 10 children and farmed in the Harvard area. My great grandfather, William Henry Dacy left to make his fortune in the Black Hills of South Dakota where he had several mines and a grocery store. I have much more on this line but have very little on the other children of Jeremiah Hannah.

Marilyn,

Thanks fro responding. I have not heard from anyone but you on this. A while back I was contacted by Roger Dacy. Any connection? Anyhow, I know very little about the Dacy clan other than the bunch who is directly related. I was in Woodstock, McHenry County, Illinois this last weekend to look up some Dacy information. Didn't find much new information. If you know any connection to the clan back in Ireland or any of the family which may have come south from Illinois. Please keep in touch. My e-mail me directly at skpdacy@aol.com

Skip
Roy, There a re a lot of common names in both lines. Unfortunatly, I don't think they are the same. Can you connect with Jeremiah?

Skip

Marilyn, Do you know where James Dacy came from/was born? If from Illinois, there is most likely a connection. Jeremiah, came from Cork in1852 and migrated to Illinois.

Skip
