Dear Lois,

Just saw your message from November 2006. Seven years later, I'm in the same situation. I'm getting my genealogy together so that it someday does someone some good. I'm
also a Defoe/Dafoe cousin(my great-grandfather was Ezra Abram Defoe and he is descended from John Ernst Defoe through Abraham Defoe). I wondred how Brian Roberts is doing. I lost contact with him years ago also. I was wondering if he ever got in touch with you, or you ever found him. If its convenient, please let me know either way.

sincerely,
your very distant cousin, Jon T. Todd
jonttodd@yahoo.com. (I don't have a computer and rarely use the internet, so it may take a while for me to get back to you). We may have met, but at age 59 I'm suffering from chronic pain and have to take strong pain pills, my memory isn't what it used to be.
Anyway, I look forward to hearing from you, whether or not you can help, but either wat you'll have my gratitude.
Re: Myrtle Roper Dafoe

HI Candace, I know you posted your request a couple of years ago but we just saw your information when we were looking up some information about my father-in-law William Clement Roper who was your grandfather Charles Roper's youngest brother.

My name is Susan Roper my husband is Robert Alfred Thomas Roper, first cousin to Harry Roper who is now deceased.

By coincidence I spoke to your grandmother Pat (Patricia) Roper this afternoon as I wanted to confirm the date of a cousin's death and I knew she would remember the exact date.
Pat gave me an update on her family and mentioned you

I never met your grandmother Myrtle Dafoe, she was still alive when I met my husband but one side of the family didn't speak to the other side.
Have you asked your grandmother Pat Roper about her? Whenever Pat spoke of Myrtle to me she always spoke well of her. I am not sure what caused her and Charlie's marriage to break up,she was only 17 when she and Charlie married he was 23. Looking at the age difference I wondered if maybe they had to get married if Myrtle was pregnant? In those days women were social outcasts if they had a baby out of wedlock. Knowing some of the Roper's they wouldn't have wanted a Roper baby not being raised a Roper by Roper's.

Candace where do you live? we are in Scarborough. if you want to contact me and I can give you any more information my home telephone n umber is 416-641-4100 and my personal email is susanjroper@gmail.com

The theory that is always exccepted by all rseearchers that I have ever come in contact with is the following

"Daniel Dafoe of Vail, Switzerland as the head of the American Branch, arriving in 1710"

It appears that the family structure is fairly well supported back to Abraham. I have Conrad, son of John Ernst Dafoe and John, son of Abraham. Do you concur?
YES I CONCUR!!!!! it goes: Daniel, Abraham, John Ernst, Conrad, William, David Conrad, Victor, Luther, Me

Are you related ???
Jerry

I would like to know where they originated in Europe before arriving in America.
The 'booklets" name David De Veau from Amsterdam who settled in Harlem in 1662. Also included are excerpts of a letter from Erastus Dafoe claiming his great-grandparents (John/Johan) were German and from the area of Alsace-Lorraine.
There are 20 family trees at Ancestry.com that have adopted Daniel Dafoe of Vail, Switzerland as the head of the American Branch, arriving in 1710.

It appears that the family structure is fairly well supported back to Abraham. I have Conrad, son of John Ernst Dafoe and John, son of Abraham. Do you concur?

Conrad would be my 4th Great-Grandfather.
I have ten booklets on the Dafoe Family that were compiled by Edward H. Dafoe of Montreal ca. 1930. All but one of the booklets are copies made from the old blueprint process.

I am interested to know if the early history of the families and the spelling variations have been researched further or revised. These booklets were distributed to all contributors and their families.

The following is a my summary of their content:
1.	United Empire Loyalist settlement claims, Flemish immigrants, Military affiliation, Settlement details. Pages 20 HS
2. New York and early Dafoe history. Pages: 18 HS
3.	John Dafoe and Adeline Parker Genealogy. Pages: 12 HS.
4.	The Clement Genealogy. Pages: 20 HS
5.	Letters of Dr. W. A. Dafoe on family history. Pages 13
6.	Erastus Dafoe claim of German ancestry and additional details on that line. Pages: 5
7.	Conrad Dafoe Descendants submitted by Albert Dafoe. Pages: 6
8.	New York - Early history and the Du Four/De Veaux connection. Pages: 3.
9.	Dafoe of Nebraska, Charts for various branches. Pages: 9.
10.	Family history for Dafoe, Waelde, Mc Mullen, and Greenleaf with charts. There appears to be one or more pages missing. Pages: 18

Note: HS refers to “half-sheets.” Some booklet pages are full sheets and others were written to be bound. The Booklets are 8.5 x 5.5 inches or one full sheet folded in half. There are 124 pages some of which are full page letters.

I would be interested in hearing from researchers who have looked at the U.S. origins of this line.
Aultsville, Osnabruck Twp., Stormont Co., Ont., Canada

AULTSVILLE, Osnabruck Township, Stormont County, Ontario, Canada

Excerpt ... attached to Roy Carlton Dafoe.

One of Ontario' earliest water highways was the St. Lawrence River. But with its many rapids, it could only be navigated with the use of locks and portages. Several villages grew around the locks and at various landings along the route.

Then, on July 1, 1958, the floodgates of the St. Lawrence Seaway were opened and the waters raced over the remains of these one-time riverside communities. Milles Roche, Farran's Point, Dickinson's Landing, Wales and Aultsville all disappeared beneath the river currents.

Many buildings from the doomed communties had been moved to the new towns of Ingleside and Long Sault, or to the historical park at Upper Canada Village. Most, however, were simply demolished. While almost all the abandoned village sites now lie well below the canal's waters, those of Aultsville still lie near the surface, leaving some the sidewalks and old backyards exposed.

Aultsville's origins date to the day when Richard Loucks, a United Empire Loyalist refugee, opened a tavern on his 400-acre farm in 1792. For several years, court sessions for the newly formed district of Lunenburg took place in Loucks' tavern. Travel was by the military road that hugged the banks of the swirling St. Lawrence River. As more settlers arrive to take up land, a settlement grew around the tavern and became known as Charlesville. With the beginning of the Richelieu and Ontario Navigation Company, steamers began to call, and a town plan was laid out with street names like Melburn, York, Nelson and Palace. Tan Bark Avenue led to Thomas Brown's tannery. During the 1840s the newly opened post office adopted the name Aultsville after another founding Loyalist family, the Aults.

In 1856 the Grand Trunk Railway opened its Aultsville station, and river traffic dwindled. With the arrival of the trains, the town grew to include, in addition to the tannery, four shoemakers, a sawmill, a shingle mill and two brickyards. The Riverview Hotel replaced the old Loucks Tavern, but following a plebiscite in 1903 was prohibited from serving liquor. The presence of three churchdes, United, Anglican and Presbyterian, may have had something to do with the success of the "dry" vote. Residents could also enjoy a riverside memorial park or send their children to the local school.

With the arrival of the auto age after the Second World War, Aultsville's industries and businesses began to move or to close. By the mid-1950s, only Borden's Chateau cheese factory and the Jarvis and Shaver general store remained.

Aultville lies south of the former Highway 21, a short distance east of Upper Canada Village and on the park road (formerly the Aultsville Road), which leads to Morrison and Nairn islands. While the road bends left, the pavement of the former Aultsville Road continues straight ahead.

Where the pavement ends and a causway over a man-made swamp begins, look in the bushes for the sidewalks, lanes and overgrown yards that once belonged to a thriving riverside town. Autlsville's Grand Trunk Station was relocated to a small roadside park 2 km (1.2 miles) west of the entrance to Upper Canada Village.

from "Ontario's Ghost Town Heritage", by Ron Brown, (ISBN-13: 978-1-55046-467-2).
My gg gmother Mary Jane Dafoe married Elisha P Jones in Canada in 1851. They eventually came to Michigan. I think they are buried in Vassar Michigan, but am not sure on that. They lived in the Bay City and Tuscola county area and other areas in Michigan, I believe. I wonder if she is on the same tree as these Dafoe's? Have you run across her name? Thank you kindly.

With sadness I read of Eleanor's passing.
She was known as Aunt Eleanor to me. She was my godmother.

My mother Joyce Irene Leach and my Aunt Eleanor were close friends. They met at Ontario Lady's College and remained very close until my mother's sudden death in 1984.

My mother was Julie Moult's godmother. Julie knew my mother as Aunt Jody.

I have lost contact with Julie, Robert and Carol and of course my godfather Charles (Chuck) Moult.

I very much would appreciate an address for Julie, or if you are more comfortable - please provide my e-mail address to Julie, so I may contact her an offer my condolences.

regards,

Donna Mosk (nee Oldham)
donnamosk@shaw.ca

Can't remember the other two. Willem is the famous Hollywood actor. Donald continued in the medical field. Dr and Mrs moved to Florida after retirement. Hope this helps you.

She moved to Moira Place Retirement Home in Tweed early this year.

Her daughters Julie and Carol live in the Greater Toronto Area and son Robert is probably still living in Kuala Lumpur.

Eleanor Carleton Moult was my god-mother. She was a school friend of my mother Joyce Irene Leach Oldham. I remember Aunt Eleanor as a child visiting us in Ottawa. Her first move was to pick up the phone book and phone and call all the Dafoe's she could! My mother died in 1984. I never heard from her or her children again. I note she was in a retirement home, but moving in 2006. Any info appreciated

Is it possible to communicate?
Olive Deshane was daughter of Joseph Defoe and sister of Joseph Defoe, my descendent. I have noticed that Ollive has somtimes had the spelling Dafoe although is a Defoe.
Eleanor explained that the Defoe's were frequently Catholic and the Dafoe's were Protestant.

I went to a Dafoe -DeFoe reunion (1976?) and met Eleanor. We had a great dinner and visited graves. I don't remember who we decended from. There was also a book with our history I have somewhere that I can't find. There is also a cousin Pat in Winsor,Ont. My Mother was Barbara Carpenter DeFoe and I am Judith DeFoe Berns. I moved years ago to NYC to be a Ford model. I now live upstate in Kingston,NY. I wondered what happened to Eleanor. It was so long ago that the Canadian postage was 40 cents. Now ours in States is more.. I would love to hear something about the Dafoe family and ancesters.

Hello! I am looking for any information about John or Lydia Dafoe. I do not know Lydia's maiden name. Family tradition thinks she was Indian. All I know for sure is that they had a daughter names Philipa, born in Toronto on 2 Feb 1852. Philipa married a Thomas Badley. Philipa apparently had an older sister named Rosetta, born in 1849.

Family "tradition" also believes that John was French in origin. There are a lot of John Dafoe's out there and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Searching for Family

My grandparents were Orpha & Louis or Lewis DaFoe. I was hoping to connect with family in Michigan. My father was William R. DaFoe, my uncles were John & Louis. I have many aunts but only remember an aunt Ruby. Hope someone can help me start my search. Grampa's mom & dad I believe were Munson & Francis, and Grama's were Justus Misener & Hulda Beemer. Thanks
