FRANCIS DAFT

I'm hoping someone will be able to help with my branch of DAFT's.

My 3xgr-grandfather was George DAFT. From the census, death cert, etc he was born c1826.
He appears on the census in Lambley, and gives his birthplace as Nottingham (City?)
His marriage certificate states father's name FRANCIS DAFT, dec'd, this was in 1847.
I can find nothing about Francis Daft anywhere. He certainly isn't on the 1841 census. There is one, but he's unmarried and born c1811 - just a little bit too young.

I'd appreciate any help with this, that anyone might be able to give. Thank you
Debbie
Hello! I am a descendent of James Daft, and am looking for answers as well. In 1850 census, there's a James Daff from VA which "matches" a James Daft in OH in the 1860 census. I believe there a correlation between the names, and I'm trying to find out the relationship. Also,if there are descendents of James and Lovey, I'm trying to figure that out. And, why he left for OH, and she wasn't with him. Divorce? Not a death. Please let me know if you have any information on this. My Dad is Mark Daft, grandfather is John Robert Daft, his Dad was Olney Taylor Daft, his Dad was John Daft, his Dad was George Washington Daft, his Dad was James Daft. Let me know how I can help as well. - Lee Taylor Daft

I am a little confused with your post. Was George born 1699 the son of Richard whose will was proved May 13 1728 at Bingham Deanery? Do you have copy of that will?

Vashti Daft's sister Salome married 11 Aug 1829 to Thomas Hickling.

When was Richard son of George born? if it was 1666 he is the son of George the tailor and Ann. If you would give me some additional information, I will forward it to another researcher in England to see if he can help you as he has me. miriamhughes@att.net
I have a George Dafte died aft 1666. His son Richard Dafte born in Hickling in May 1699 and died there in Dec 1727. He married Mary.
Their son George Daft was born Nov 1699 in Hickling and died there 28 Jan 1770. He married Dorothy Caunt (1722-1805). I am descended from their son Thomas (1755-1817). He married Bridget Sutton (1768-1844). Their son, George was born in Hickling but he and his wife Ann Hardy moved to Halloughton, where their granddaughter, my grandmother, Eveline Daft, was born.
In the 1881 census there is a Vashti Hickling(copied as Vashh). She was born about 1840 and was niece to George Daft born 1809. I am unable to correctly place her in my tree. The original has her born in Hickling but also surname Hickling. Error?
janeli@everus.ca

Did the family just wipe her out of the family history? Due to her involvement with Joshua Green. I do understand the Pritts' where a very respected family in Elkins, and still is for that matter.

James Daft of Va connected to Maryland Dafts?

My notes on James Daft speculates that he is possibly descended from a Daft family in St. Mary's County Maryland, where a James Daft who was about the same age was mentioned in an estate document, but doesn't state what the document was or who else was mentioned. James was born about 1775, and to my knowledge no one has ever been able to locate who his parents were, [there were no other Dafts in Va at all, or where he was born, if anyone can help I would appreciate it, Randy

Thank you . I have now worked out some more information, and yes it was Samuel who married Sarah Ann G Smith who I was looking for. I have also found his father, Henry, but the surname seems to have changed to Daff. Not sure if this is an error or maybe that was the earlier version of the name!!! His wife was Jane Caswell. I have at present got his father, Henry's,information, but the name seems to have changed to Daff. This could be an error or maybe it was origianly Daff, I will pursue it further. Thank you again.

Debbie

Hi there,
I recently visited the "Old Sines Cemetery" deep in the woods south of Goshen in the Banks District od Upshur Co. WV. The cemetery consists of 5 marked graves and at least 14 unmarked graves by my count.
.
Among the marked graves was that of John William Daff/Daft.
As you'll see in the 1st attached photo, his grave had formerly been "unmarked". The old rough field stones (serving as his head & footstones) are still in place. Behind his original headstone stands fairly new marble military headstone.
Note that his surname was spelled Daff rather then Daft.
The second photo is a close-up of that headstone.
I do not know if Major Daft's wives are buried there. If they are.... their graves are unmarked. One of his grandsons, Boyd Daff (s/o Syrus J. Daff) has a marked grave there, however. See the 3rd attached photo below.
.
Bye for now,
Kathleen

Hi there, this is what I have on the location of John William Daft's grave in my notes: He was buried in 1901 in the Sines Cemetery, Goshen, Upshur County, WV, we first thought this was the cemetery directly behind the Church of the Brethren in Goshen, but it is not, he is buried in the "old" Sines cemtery that can be reached only by walking through the woods for about two miles further on Route 46/7, then 250 yards North of the road to the graveyard, generally following the road that runs beside the Goshen cemetery. It is located on top of a hill and contains several graves, all unattended and covered with brush, and ferns as high as the waist. Sometime after 1998, Jake and Connie Miller took a CSA headstone to be erected there.

Hi there,
I've photographed & transcribed all the engraved headstones in the Sines aka Goshen Cem. down from the church in Goshen on Howells Fork Road.
.
There isn't an engraved stone there for John William Daft/Daff, Sr. Could you mean the you the other (smaller) Sines Cem. up there back in the woods? If not his grave must be one of those marked with just a field stone.
.
Someone has recently had a number of small stones, engraved with just a given name & surname (all Daffs), placed on a number of previously "unmarked" graves in a central row in the Cem down from the church. There are still a number of other "unmarked" graves in this central row, (which I assume may also be Daffs) as well as a few elsewhere in this particular cemetery.
.
I haven't been to the smaller Sines cem. up there yet but my husband has. It's off the beaten path & fairly over grown. Last time we were up this past summer we couldn't even find it using our GPS!
,
In addition to a number of marked graves, there are also a number of unmarked graves at that Cem.as well.
.

Do you know where the John William Daft/Daff, Sr. grave site might be? That is, which Sines cemetery and where in that cemetery?
Thanks,
Bye for now,
Kathleen
