Re: Dagger Surname

My mother's maiden name was Dagger and all her known ancestors came from Preston, so the chances we are related. An Irish man once told me that Dagger was a coruption of Jagger or Jaegar which is an Irish name. This makes sense given the fact that a lot of Irish went to Lancashire to work in the cotton mills and my Granfather looked very Irish. My granfather's name was William Dagger and he was a lecturer in textiles at Preston Polly. He was the first one to make it out of the tradidtional 'mill worker' role which several generations of Daggers seems to have been according to the records.

Hi,
I have recently begun research into my family tree. I had limited knowledge from stories and information that I've been told until I was recently given copies of documents to add to my collection of research. Bruno Marchio from Somerville,NJ is related to my family. We are in Hanover PA and the stories that I've been told are of a Bruno that was supposedly called "Uncle Mike" by my great aunts and uncles. My Aunt Jeanne was in contact with a Penny from Somerville NJ. I believe Bruno was her grandfather. We are Antonio Marchio's family, son of Giuseppe(Bruno's brother). I have a copy of Caterina Raso's will from Italy stating her son's names: Bruno, Francesco, Giacinto, and "another son of mine Giuseppe, now in America" (and his son Antonio). If you have any information and still have an active ancestry account, please contact me. I have a lot of information, but many holes to fill. Thank you!
dkaiser@bermudian.org

Mike Breakell

please send your email to my attention at mellyism@yahoo.ca for more information on William and Margaret (Cooper) Breakell who were my mother's (Ivy) Breakell. Your father and my mother may be cousins not step-brother and sister. I believe your mother may have been of William's sister's or brother's child. Keith and Ivy were raised as brother and sister. As my father is still living I will see if he knows who your mother was. Is your father still living? I don't believe he knows my mother has passed away as my father is not very good at staying in touch. My cousin in Blackpool and I have been working on the Dagger family tree, but if you are working on Breakell let me know if you would like help or how much information you have.
Cheers
Melanie (Dagger) Rogers

My Nana and Poppa (William Breakell and Margaret Cooper) Nana did emmigrate to Canada and of course passed away in 1979 I believe. My mother Ivy has unfortunately passed away too, Aug. 23rd 2000. My father John Dagger is alive and well at 83 still residing int he house he built for my mother.
Unfortunately I do not know alot about your father Keith.
Re: Elijah Dagger and Elizabeth Harris Dagger

Nancy: Great to hear from you! I thought that Dagger was a very unusual name but I guess not. As I searched around I found alot of Daggers in the U.S. which really surprised me. I guess the Colonials really got around alot. There are two Daggers here in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The lady I spoke with married a Dagger. Her husband's family emmigrated from Blackpool (same area as me) and during WWII he went to England and met her, they married and he brought her back to Canada. She has one son, also in Ottawa. I have two brothers Mark Andrew Dagger, and John Scott Dagger. I looked at some heraldry information, which is interesting but different from Ancestry info. Seems the name may have originated with the Normans (French) last name could have been spelled DACRE and as was wont at the time, last names changed over the years, from French to English, or due to someone's poor spelling atributes. There are also some Daggers (two listings) in Vancouver BC Canada. Some of our relatives did immigrate to Australia, not sure which ones, and the funny thing is we do have a Les Dagger in our family but he is my nephew and is only 20 years old. Please stay in touch if you find anything else of interest. I will do likewise.
Cheers for now
Melanie
Dear Melanie, Welcome! I have also been in touch with Les Dagger from Australia who has an extensive genealogy. My ancestors came from England and Wales in the 1840's. Iwent to thre National archives this summer and copied 251 pages of documents on 4 of my great great grandfathers who fought in the Civil War but Elijah Dagger did not. Les has not been able to supply any linkage yet either, but if Bush is related to the Queen on both his Mother and his Father's side of the family there is hope for us. thanks for replying. Sincerely Nancy

Nancy: My forebearers originated from Blackpool England. There are many Daggers in this area and also in St.Annes and Lytham. I recently had a trip back home to England which is also where I was born and while in Lytham there is a memorial to the men who fought in WWI. Listed is a W. Victor Dagger who was an Air Mechanic. My father John Dagger was an Auto Mechanic. His mother May, had sisters Annie and Edith and a brother Dick (Richard). The only members of my immediate family, mother father and myself emmigrated to Canada in 1952. This is all for now.

My great-great grandparents were Elijah Dagger and Elizabeth Harris. They had Annie, Ada and Franklyn. Annie had 2 daughters, Elizabeth and Ada Howell. Ada never married. Franklyn had a daughter Doris, so no male carries the Dagger name forward for this branch of the family. Annie, my great grandmother died in 1905 after giving birth to Ada. Elizabeth, my grandmother died in 1974. I do not know the town from which they emigrated, but I found their final trip back to America in 1904 at Ellis Island. Any linkage with siblings for Elijah or Elizabeth Harris would be deeply appreciated.

My great-grandfather Richard, had a brother James born in Staining in 1841 and I think their parents were William and Mary. I know there are a lot of Daggers in that area but there may be a connection here.

SUMMER SHARE - PLEASE READ!

Dear DAGGER Message Board Readers,

As hot weather is upon most areas of the USA now, I' would like to encourage everyone to post 1 item (obituary, article. information from a book) on the families you have researched. Or, write-up a short biography on a person you have researched. We could call our collective efforts a "Summer Share."

Make sure your post includes full name, location with county/State, dates and other identifiers. Since the "Surname box" is the most misunderstood part of a post, I want to remind everyone that ONLY surnames IN the post or subject line go in the "surname box" (not a list of all surnames you are searching). Also, if transcribing (quoting) from a source, please include the source name, author, date of publication, and page numbers.

I'd like to start a "tradition" where all posters put one post up around this time of year, like I've described. [Maybe we can do the same group effort in the fall also.]

And, of course, everyone is encouraged and welcomed to post at ANY time on subjects related to this surname board. This idea for a "Summer Share" is something I hope we will all do in an effort to help each other with searching for those ellusive ancestors!

Remember, there are always new people just starting their research. Something that is old news to you might be totally new for another searcher.

So, get your files out and do a "Summer Share!"

Judy Florian
Message Board Administrator

Hi Stephanie, not sure if this is any help. The Tom I was speaking of died in 1946, he was married, not sure of her name. He is buried at ST Helens church in Garstang, he was a peat dealer. he had a son Eddie. My favourite Aunt, second eldest was named Florence. I am not researching geneology, just have lots of info from asking questions as a kid & Mum & Dad wrote it down for me before they died ( what they knew) My Father was a very late additiion to a very large family, many of my aunts & uncles had passed away before i was born, I guess this was the reason for my curiosity. good luck with your search.
