DoD Identifies Army Casualty

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Spc. Michael A. Dahl Jr., 23, of Moreno Valley, Calif., died Oct. 17 in Argahndab, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Wash.

I've found the family in the 1870 census and a possibility for emigration of Matilda Dahl on a ship. The 1990 census lists Theodore Barth, a widow and boarder, as having emigrated in 1855. Hope this helps.

Matilda Dahl

I'm looking for any information on Matilda Dahl born around 1836 in Prussia, don't know when she came over but married Theodore Barth (again don't know exactly) but had a daughter named Anna elizabeth (born in 1866) Anna married my Great Grandfather Joseph Schlitz. Matilda was living in Camden, New Jersey during the 1880 census. She died in 1896. Any help would be appreciated.

Belle (Isabella, Isabell) Dahl

Dahl is her married name. I cannot figure out which brother she married: Henry or Oscar (Oskar) Dahl. Belle did marry John "the Hitman" Calbo Brevik after she married a Dahl.

Belle was born: 1896 (or around that time) in Theif River, Pennington, MN
M: (John) 1912

Now, this is info I got from my MIL But being that Belle was around 16 years old at the time of John's marriage to her. I am wondering if Belle was a cousin to the Dahl brothers or some other close relative.

Please help me find information on her. I would be greatful!!!

Hi was just browsing through this web site, I am the daughter of Cyril Edward Dahl, who was the son of Edward Nielsen Dahl, for your information, Cyril Dahl married Agnes Margaret Storey and they had 4 daughters, Judith Margaret, Lloloma Edith, Dianne Dorothy and Roslyn Edna. Cyril and Agnes are deceased but daughters still live in Brisbane.

Hallo Anna Kris. How glad I was when I suddely got a living sign about my relative August Johannesson Dahl from Dalsland Sweden. I have send a message to Bethel Church i Holdrege and asked them to look for family Dahl, August Johannesson (son of Johannes) Dahl born 1866 in Ör Parish Dalsland and Augusta Paulina Johannesdaughter Dahl married Söderström born 1969 in Ör Parish Dalsland and their two half-siblings. They were cousins of my gandmother and they were born in the same place where I was born. Please look for the reply of your question from someone which mentioned my name. Thank you for the lovely reply. Augusta Paulina Dahl Soderstrom is my great aunt. My mother and uncle always loved her dearly and called her "Aunt Gustie". They loved her house in Denver, Colorado. We have some lovely photos of her. Her husband, Charles, was a professional photographer, so many family photos were taken at the Soderstrom studio.

Do you know anything about when the family came to the USA? I think August came to the USA before his father and Augusta. I have copies of some personal letters he wrote. They're in Swedish, naturally, and not well translated. Would you be willing to translate them to English if I send copies to you? You would probably like to have them in your records. If so, please send your email address. Mine is bells@frii.com. Feel free to contact me directly. I also have some church certificates for Luther but not other members of the family.

Would August's father's name be Johannes Dahl or Johannes Johannesson? I get confused with Swedish family names.

Feel free to look at my Ancestry.com tree that has most of my data and some photos. It's public. It's called the Eversman-Dahl Family History Site. My mother's maternal line is Eversman (German). Look for my grandfather, Luther Dahl. My mother is his daughter. That gives you a rough idea of how we would be related.

Milda married Alfred Holmes & had two daughters. Doris J born about 1927 & Mary L born about 1929. Mary/Maria Amanda Johnson Dahl was born in Finland & immigrated with her mother in 1903. Her mother's name was Kristina Amanda Strom. She married Carl Erik Fagelklo in 1889 in Finland. He immigrated in 1893 & changed his name to Charles E F Johnson.

I was able to find your Grandfather Jakob in the emigration database "Emigrants from Oslo 1867-1930". There it says your Grandfather had residence in Elverum, so it should be Heradsbygd near Elverum in Norway.
You can do the search online, at http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebMeta.exe (Source category=Emigrants, Sub-category=Registers)

Where is Heradsbygden, Norway

My Grandfather Jacob, (or Jakob) Agustus Dahl, born January 20, 1968, arrived in the US 1886. We have a copy of a Scottish Rite membership card that says he was born in Heradsbygden, Norway.
I am unable to locate Heradsbygden. There are two possibilities;
Heradsbygda, Ringerike, Norway and
Heradsbygd Elverum, Norway.
I have not been able to figure out how to search the 1875 Census or find the local parish records. Any help would be appreciated.

ALEDO, Ill. -- Charles ''Chesty'' Dahl, 76, of Aledo, died Friday Oct. 12, 2001, at the Mercer County Hospital in Aledo.

Services at the Fippinger Funeral Home in Aledo with the Rev. Gary Green officiating. Burial is at the Aledo cemetery where graveside military services will be conducted by the American Legion Fallerans Post 121.

Memorials may be left to the American Heart Association or the Mercer County Historical Society.

He was born Sept. 3, 1925, in Perryton Township Mercer County a son of Leonard and Alta Butcher Dahl. He received his education from the Slater school and attended Aledo High School. He married Norma Green Jan. 24, 1945, in Rock Island.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and was engaged in farming in the Mannon area until retiring in 1986. Prior to farming he was employed at the United Freezer Service in Rock Island and St. Louis.

He was a member of the American Legion Fallerans Post 12, the Oak View Country Club and he enjoyed golfing, playing cribbage, trap shooting and was an avid Cardinals Fan.

He is survived by his wife, Norma; a brother and sister-in-law, Rex and Helen Dahl of Aledo and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Paul Eugene Dahl.

MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Arthur E. Dahl, 85, of 421 Parkington Dr., died on Thursday, April 25, 2002, at Unity Hospital in Muscatine.

Services will be at Grace Lutheran Church, 2107 Cedar St. The Rev. Leif Pohl will officiate. Pallbearers will be William Schafenacker, John Stevens, Don Clark, Lyle McCullough, Roy Carver Jr., Gene Fuller and Milton Carlson. Private burial will take place in Greenwood Cemetery.

There will be no visitation and the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church.

He was born Sept. 16, 1916, in Alexis, Illinois, to Ernest V. and Emma P. Olson Dahl. He married Dorothy Peterson on Sept. 10, 1944, in Monmouth, Illinois.

He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II.

Arthur Dahl was one of the first employees of the company that became HON Industries originating in Muscatine. He retired as Senior Vice-President of HON in 1981.

At the time of his death, Arthur was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust, and had served on the board of directors of the Trust since its inception. Mr. Dahl was appointed by the Governor of Iowa to serve on the Investment Advisory Board of the Iowa Employees Retirement System and the Iowa Product Development Commission. He was also involved in the United Way, Muscatine Chamber of Commerce and the predecessor to the Muscatine Development Corporation.

He had been a member of the board of Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, which he had attended. Both he and his wife were active members of Grace Lutheran Church in Muscatine.

He is survived by two sons, John Arthur Dahl and his wife, Linda Thornton Dahl, of Lincolnshire, Illinois, and Robert Alan Dahl, of Washington, D.C.; and two grandchildren, Eric and Emily Dahl.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Dorothy, in 1994, and two sisters.

Marie Dahl

REYNOLDS, Ill. - Marie Dahl, 91 of Reynolds, Illinois, died Sunday, March 23, 2008 at Lutheran Homes, Muscatine.

Service will be at the Speer Funeral Home, Aledo, Illinois. Burial will be at the Aledo Cemetery.

Memorials may be left for the Lutheran Homes Alzheimers Unit.

Mrs. Dahl was born on January 6, 1917, in Reynolds, Illinois, the daughter of G. H. and Anna Christie Fassett.

Marie worked for the U.S. government during WW II teaching others how to make plutonium. After the war she began her teaching career at Dexter School. She then taught at many local schools including, Frew, Keithsburg, Reynolds, Coal Valley and Moline, retiring from Horace Mann.

She married Everett O. Dahl on May 9, 1941 in Palmyra, Missouri. From this union, one son, Larrie was born. Everett preceded her in death on March 30, 1969.

Marie was a member of the former Perryton Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed card club, pottery and painting. She was also an avid volunteer and fundraiser for many non-profit organizations including the American Red Cross.

She is survived by her son, Larrie Dahl and wife, Audrey, of Illinois City, Illinois; six grandchildren and spouses, Sean and Bridget Jones of Aledo, Illinois, Jed and Jennifer Dahl of Joy, Greg and Danielle Dahl of Illinois City, Illinois, Dan Dahl of Reynolds, Illinois, David and Tara Dahl of Carbondale, Illinois, and Tyler Jordan of Illinois City, Illinois; six great-grandchildren: Sarah, Collin and Caitlyn Jones, Olivia and Eliah Dahl and Bryce Dahl; a brother, Gene Fassett of Biggsville, Illinois; a sister and brother-in-law, Anna and Neil Streeter of New Windsor, Illinois; a sister-in-law, Violet Fassett of West Chester, Pennsylvania; and many nieces and nephews.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; husband and a brother, George Fassett.

I am your cousin. My GG Grandmother's name was Caroline Dahl. She married a man named Martin Dahl (no relation to Kristian Dahl)

You seem to have most of the information I have. I am not certain if you are the same person I corresponded with several years ago. My mother's middle name is Alvilde after Nora.

Let me know what you are looking for. I think I can go back to around 1690 in Norway.

Dahl surname

It is my understanding that the name Dahl is a place name. I believe my great grandfather took this name when in the service in the late 1800's because of the constant changing of last names from one generation to the next.

Does anyone else have a different understanding>
