I have found information on my g,g,g grandmother: Anna Sophia Daehling from brahlstorf DOB: Oct. 13, 1830 (parents: Caspar H. Daehling & Anna marie Jenckel), but I am not sure if her family was part of the Vellhan parish. I'd like to find this out and I am also trying to locate where her husband (my g,g,g grandfather) originated from. He was John Voss (probably Johann, I dont have a middle initial; DOB: 10/13/1811). They were married July 1852 and came to the U.S. August 1852.
Hello Loren,

The Sophia Caroline Dahling I am seeking was in Minnesota also and is on the 1880 Census listed as Cariline Whittneben along with her husband William Herman and daughter Dora.

Can you tie this family into yours? She couldn't have just appeared without some other family members somewhere around. William was born in Pennsylvania.

Both of her parents on the Census were listed as being born in MECK, which I am assuming was short for Mecklenburg, Germany.

Thanks, Donna

They had 4 children, born in Iowa then they moved to Pipestone, Minnesota where 3 more children were born.

Can anybody connect to this DAHLING family?

Thanks, Donna

Re: John Dahling who moved from Mecklenburg in 1840

I take it you don't have an exact birth date. Where exactly did he die? Any chance there is a surviving state death record, obituary, or church record? It's hard to do much without the village name in Germany where he was born. I didn't find a census record online in either Ohio 1850 or Kentucky 1860, but I could have missed it. I don't have a John Dahling or Elizabeth Kampf in my records, so that perhaps means they weren't from Vellahn parish in Mecklenburg. Dähling (with some variations) seems to be a frequently occuring name in Mecklenburg. Would love to here if you do find anything.

I believe I have now proven that Carl Dahling of Hay Creek Twp in Goodhue County, John of Featherstone Twp in Goodhue County (formerly of Wabasha County), and Fred of West Albany Twp of Wabasha County are related. Carl is an uncle, his eldest sister being the mother of John, Fred, and also William of Ada, MN. They come from Brahlstorf, Vellahn parish, Mecklenburg. I have shared this with representative members of the various branches in the two counties. If you haven't seen the info, then I will be glad to share it with you. I will be updating my web site as I have time.

Mecklenburg is today part of the North German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Many years ago it was divided up into the duchies of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Mecklenburg-Strelitz. After WWII until Reunification, it was part of East Germany.

There appear to have been many Dählings in Mecklenburg. My family came from Brahlstorf in Vellahn parish, and there looked to be some in villages around there in all directions. Have you checked the county death record or any available church records to find a specific village name?

My Dahlings might have had some connection to a Wisconsin family, but I cannot say for sure. Only that they were originally bound for Milwaukee according to Germans to America. I cannot account for the whereabouts of some of them between 1855 in Alden, NY and then a few years later in Hay Creek, Goodhue Co, MN. A son-in-law went from Minnesota to Wisconsin after their daughter died, and then they showed up living with him back in Minnesota. You might wish to order the microfilms for Vellahn from your local LDS Family History Center (FHC) and start your research there.

They moved to Cincinatti in 1840 with their infant son, William. There they had Sophia and Henry. They moved to Morningview Kentucky then had Mary (1856), John (1858) and Benjamin (1860).
Benjamin was my great, great grandfather.
