Obit of Michael Dahm 1896

From the Chatsworth Plaindealer
Chatsworth,Livingston,Illinois

MICHAEL DAHM
DECEMBER 4, 1896

Michael Dahm, was born in Wurttemburg, Germany, August 7, 1824, and died at his late home in this city at midnight on Thursday, November 26, 1896, after an illness of about four weeks, at the age of 72 years, 3 months and 19 days.
He emigrated to this country about forty years ago and was united in marriage in Pennsylvania on April 2, 1857, to Mary Funk. From there they came to Woodford county, Ill. While living in that place he was converted under the labors of the sainted Jacob Shaefele and joined the Evangelical association. In 1868 they came to Ford county, where they lived till about four years ago, when they removed to this city, where he and his wife had since resided. He leaves to mourn his departure the bereaved widow, three sons and one daughter and a number of grandchildren, also a large number of friends.
Michael Dahm was a man of strict integrity. He was highly honorable in his business dealings and had, by industry, economy and simple habits, acquired a comfortable amount of this world's goods. During his last suffering he longed to be relieved from pain and be at home with the Lord.
The funeral services were held on Sunday morning in the German Evangelical church. The sermon was preached by the pastor, Rev. J. Alber, and a large procession of friends followed to the grave. May the Lord comfort the sorrowing friends.
He received his education in the Early Sacred Heart Parochial School graduating in 1953 from Sacred Heart High School.

At the age of 15, John contracted Poliomyelitis and was hospitalized in Sioux City for three months. During this tenure, after intense study and experience, he became a licensed sonographer and practiced at both the local hospital and Kossuth County Hospital in Algona.

John had many interests. Despite his increasing disability from Polio, he remained active in hunting, fishing and traveling. He was an avid photographer and was always accompanied by two or more cameras to “catch the moment.”

After retirement he did artistic paintings , some of which were displayed at local art exhibitions. He was a devoted member of Holy Family Parish as well as the Iowa Polio Support Network.

John died Friday, December 18, 2009 at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, Iowa at the age of 75.
Upon closer examination of the original reply sent on April 26 it appears the information was sent in error to my Dahm Frahm message board. The marriage information sent belongs to the surnames of Remackel and Halfman. So I'm still seeking the information posted in my original query.

Thank you very much for all your time and effort in tracking down the marriage record in Lyons, Clinton, Iowa. Greatly appreciated! I'm a few hundred miles away which makes it difficult to pin point records. I know there was also a Lyons Township in Mills County during that same time which adds confusion to the location of the event. I know for sure they didn't marry in Lyons County.

Unfortunately when I opened the attachment I wasn't able to view the bottom section of page 154 and didn't see their names listed. I'm a little puzzled by Ludwig and Emilie getting married in 1884. I have a Hamburg passenger list and a New York passenger list showing they were both on the same ship in November 1885, and single. More things to ponder and investigate!
Thanks again for all of your help!

I had a difficult time finding my 1884 Lyons, IA marriage record. The people that worked at the court house and Catholic Churches couldn't find it. I finally found it in person in the Clinton County court house marriage index. It turns out it was primary under the wife's maiden name and not under the grooms surname. I've attached a copy. They were married in St. Bonifas Catholic Church in Lyons, IA.,but even with the court house record, the church people cannot find it. The church people are very reluctant to allow me to search for it myself in their records.

Ludwig Dahm of Lyons, Iowa and Emilie Frahm of Lyons, Iowa were married on May 17, 1886. This information was written in a book by my grandmother. I'd like to obtain a copy of their marriage application and license but need to verify if this event took place in Clinton County, Iowa or not. I appreiciate any information that will help locating this marriage record.
Many Thanks!

From what I can gather, the family name "Dahm" derives from a location. The family name Dahm can be found in many regions of (what is now known as) Germany, and the location name of Dahm appears in many regions as well. Older uses of the name indicate often that the spelling has varied through the years. My greatest experience is in the area that is now Rheinland-Pfalz, where the name has been spelled Dahm, Dahlm, and Dahlem.

The International Gazetteer (http://www.fallingrain.com/world/GM/a/D/a/h/) provides the following German locations that may have been the source of the family name Dahm:
Dahlem city Land Nordrhein-Westfalen Germany 50.3833333 6.55 1771 11983
Dahlem city Land Rheinland-Pfalz Germany 49.9166667 6.6 718 6024
Dahlem city Land Rheinland-Pfalz Germany 49.9833333 6.6833333 1151 6858
Dahlem city Land Niedersachsen Germany 53.2 10.75 180 10239
Dahlem city Land Berlin Germany 52.45 13.2833333 157 272464
Dahlen city Land Rheinland-Pfalz Germany 50.4666667 7.9 967 18961
Dahlen city Land Sachsen-Anhalt Germany 52.5666667 11.8333333 108 3126
Dahlen city Land Sachsen-Anhalt Germany 52.8666667 12.05 134 3375
Dahlen city Land Brandenburg Germany 52.2166667 12.4166667 314 6153
Dahlen city Land Sachsen Germany 51.3666667 13 511 8407
Dahlen city Land Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Germany 53.6833333 13.4333333 98 3783
Dahme city Land Schleswig-Holstein Germany 54.2166667 11.0833333 3 8209
Dahme city Land Brandenburg Germany 51.8666667 13.4333333 288 6561
Dahmen city Land Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Germany 53.65 12.5833333 29 4391
Dahmeshoved city Land Schleswig-Holstein Germany 54.2 11.0833333 3 5527
Dahmeshöved city Land Schleswig-Holstein Germany 54.2 11.0833333 3 5527
Dahmker city Land Schleswig-Holstein Germany 53.5833333 10.45 147 14460
Dahmsdorf city Land Schleswig-Holstein Germany 53.8666667 10.55 65 39275
Dahmsdorf city Land Brandenburg Germany 52.2333333 13.9833333 157 7796
Dahmsdorf city Land Brandenburg Germany 52.5333333 14.1 206 7408
Dahn city Land Rheinland-Pfalz Germany 49.15 7.7833333 856 10854
Dahnen city Land Rheinland-Pfalz Germany 50.0666667 6.15 1496 4659

Note that the location name does not mean that your most recent ancestors lived in the same location. The period referred to of when the family originally came from Dahm might be several generations prior.

Thomas Kohn
with Dahm family from Igel and Wasserliesch, both on the Mosel River in what is now Rheinland-Pfalz

I wrote to the Arch Dioscese and they recommended that I write to St. Boniface's Church. I did that six months ago without any results. I would appreciate any assistance. From family stories, I am told they came to that area after Nicholas was in the civil war and stayed there. Thank you.

Gustavo J DAHMS

Am wondering if anyone knows of a connection between a Gus Dahms and Bertha Rackman. A letter from one of her sons stated that her second marriage was to a Gus Dams or Dahms circa 1915. The marriage only lasted for a short period of time. Bertha Rackman would have lived in Loraine Township, Polk, Wisconsin and I have a 1930 census for the same area listing a Gustavo J. Dahms who would have been 57 at the time

Thank you.
What time frame are you talking about here? Coincidentally I too have a Dahm/O'Connor connection. I have Hubert John Dahm m Mary Catherine O'Connor about 1925 and I believe Hubert's parents were Edward & Cecelia Dahm but have not been able to confirm. I wonder if your William and my Edward could be the same person because Cecelia is not a common name? Maybe Edward is his middle name. Anyways if you can connect anything let me know. I do also know that Mary's parents were Frank M. O'Connor & Ida M. Costley if that helps.
Thanks,
Lisa Zuber

No, I don't have a Peter DAHM like that. I'm sorry I took so long to reply. I would like to find more information about the DAHM's in Prussia. Mine were from Aachen. Mary
