12-10-10 12:36 AM
Hi, I'm a direct descendant of Joseph Foelle or Fourelle Cofsky/Cofske born May 30 1816 in Sorel, Quebec, married to Celina Tarte Feb. 7, 1842 and died Nov. 11, 1907 in Milbury, Mass. His father was Barthelomy Fiolkoski married to Marie B(haven't seen her full name anywhere. Any info. would be greatly appreciated.
Hello!

Louis Fiolkoski is the brother of my ancester, Joseph Foelle Cofsky. Joseph's descendants became Cofsky and Cofske... Louis' descendants became Kasky and Cofske, from what I've seen.

I have Louis married at least twice, and I have their son Louis as Kasky, but only lived a few months. It is the only son I could find in the church record with Adelaide. She died in 1852.

There is a marriage to Marie Anne Theriault in 1853. I have 3 children, and if there is a Louis I didn't have him... perhaps I missed it or have incorrect info.

If you would share info with me I'd appreciate it. Feel free to contact me directly!

Thanks,

Debbi

I doubt very much the name was intentionaly changed... but, it is most probably the result of pronounciation and how the priest understood it... and with time the surname DAIGLE became predominant in the family...

Baptisms of the children of the first couple show BOTH variations... some baptised Daigle other baptised Daigre... same for marriage records of the children and baptism of grandchildren...

This is not unusual with French surnames...

Hello, you ask about Daigre and Daigle. The original ancestor, Olivier Daigre, born 1643 in Charente, Vienne, Aigre, France spelled his name with the "re" on the end. The name stayed the same until the 4th generation. (Olivier, Bernard, Joseph Simon - all spelled Daigre) The fourth generation the son was called Simon Joseph Daigle. Notice the le on the end. This is my own line and goes back 12 generations.
The Daigre line has passed to the present as some relatives early on moved to Quebec Canada and raised families until some in the family filtered down into the states.
Also to note is that in 1755 there was the "great expulsion" of the French from Acadia (Nova Scotia) back to France, and then they returned several years later to Louisiana, hence we get the term "Cajun" from the work Acadian.
Hope this is of some help.
Mike Daigle
1755 was NOT an expulsion to France... but a DEPORTATION... families were thorned apart and sent in different places in various states of America and in England on different boats... in England they refused to let them out of the boat, so many of them died during the months that they were left in those boats, until France made some sort of agreement with England, so that the survivors could be sent to France... but that is just a smal portion of the Acadian... others had been scattered thru out the US... some had excaped the deportation and walked all the way to Quebec... as for those in the US, many made their way back to Quebec... others found their to what use to be the French colony of Louisianna...

I think you really should take the time to read about the true Acadian history... the number of people who ended up spending the rest of their life looking for their spouses, children, parents, siblings, etc... what was done to the Acadian was horrific and inhuman... but, I guess we shouldn't be surprise, compare to what the British did to the Indian, the Acadian got off easy, believe it or not, and that says a lot about British colonial authorities' politics and cruel mentality...
Also, the town of Aigre still exists in France today. Google it and find out for yourself. There are even photos taken from just a couple years ago that help in understanding.
Regarding the name change, I know on my particular line, the father, Joseph Simon DAIGRE, born about 1696 in Pisiguit, Minas Basin(Windsor, Nova Scotia)had a son called Simon Joseph DAIGLE, born 20 November 1738 in Pisiguit. Many people confuse the two.
There are at least 4 Coat of Arms that I am aware of that show the Daigre/Daigle.
And also there is an Aigle Castle at the foot of the Alps that may also tie in with the Daigre/Daigle lines. I am still researching this.
Regards,
Mike Daigle

D'Aigre is the correct spelling. D'Aigres came from a town that existed in France called Aigre. D'Aigre, Daigre and Daigle are all the same. The name change to Daigle first appeared in Beaubassin, Nova Scotia in 1727. It was said that a Daigre didn't like the name meaning so he changed the re at the end of Daigre to le. The le is suppose to mean the sign of the eagle. The first Daigle to come to Louisiana was Eustache Daigle, son of Bernard Daigle, Jr. and Angelique Richard.
