He also lived in Mississippi and later in Alabama. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Rhonda

My great grandfather Henry Allen Dial was living in Mississipi
around that time. My grandfather was born in Boone, Ms. but I know they also lived in other places in Mississippi. Do you think there is a connection because I can find out more information and send it to you too? Our last name was spelled Dial but I've been told the Dail and Dial family is the same family.

Oh my gosh, wouldn't it be nice it someone would just say what they know??
Sometimes this stuff can be so frustrating. My mom was pretty secretive about her past and would not really tell us where she was or what she was doing between the time she lived in Fayetteville as a girl and married my dad in 1946. It wasn't until I was in my teens that it finally came out she had been married before my dad, she was of the opinion that children didn't need to know about their parents. I guess a lot of the older generation feel that way. I'm just really curious though, especially about this Cherokee stuff.

Would your husband's father be Gary? Gary and I would be 3rd cousins, although we've never met. Henry S. and Sarah Ann (Martin) Dail are buried in unmarked graves at Camp Ground United Methodist Church Cemetery in Fayetteville, N.C. My late mother knew where. A first cousin of my mom tried to locate the graves, but couldn't remember where they were. (I need proof to place markers there.) I asked that cousin whether she had heard of Cherokee blood in the Dail line. Her mother told her "Don't ask. Don't tell." Thanks to my mom, I have all the names of Henry and Sarah's children, as well as their birth dates. My mom did much research, but could not connect Henry to other Dails in the Cumberland County area. There was a rumor that they came from Greene County, N.C. I found a Henry S. Dail in the Confederate army, but do not know whether he is our Henry. There are also deeds in the Cumberland County Courthouse with Henry's name.

I have not contacted them yet, but they have the same ancestor as I do. That would be Henry S. Dail. Are you descended from that line also? If I find out more, I will email you.

You can view them here:
http://family.webshots.com/album/570714293auoUHs

John H. Dail is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Raleigh. I am descended from his daughter, Xemina Branch Dail. He had 9 children, and they all had quite peculiar names. John served in the Confederate Army, and spent time in Pt. Lookout Prison.
Let me know if you need further information on him. He is the reason I started in this addictive hobby..............

So how could your grandfater be married to your great-grandmother Delphia?

In 1850 Greene Co NC, Household 226-226 there was a Henry S. Dail age 66 and Delpha maybe his daughter age 34. The Delphia Jane Dail who married Lucian Gaston Herring must have been another Delphia Born August 4, 1853, her father was Henry Dale and mother Sallie Martin.

I would like to know who the Henry S and Delpha living in Greene Co belong to.

I have had other relatives say similar things about the reactions of older folks. My grandfather Albert Thomas Herring was married to Delphie Jane Dail, Henry S. Dail's daughter. My mom always told us her dad used to say "That Delphie Jane was a real red Indian"(sorry for the political incorrectness) My mom was olive skinned, dark hair and eyes and I am often taken for Native American. I really wish someone would tell us, it's probably a great story!

So I did look at my chart here (which needs some cleaning up) and didn't find Abel's wife or parents, However a google search turned this up, http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~paday/dobb...
mentioning Able and wife plus her parents. The spelling of the last name varies but it's got to be that family I think. Also interesting is the family's involvement with the Herrings, Abel's grand-daughter married a Herring.

He had 2 sons, Reubin Cecil Dail, and James Cecil Dail.

I have very vague memories of his home on Hwy 13 in Wade, NC. All I remember are a matched set of white mules he owned that he still plowed with.

On the Dail vs. Dale thing, I've hear a couple of stories.

#1 - the name was originally Daily and the Y was dropped when they came over. I doubt this because the Dails were in the US long before the Irish immigrations, and are probably (like most original Southern Whites) of Scots-Irish origin.

#2 - The literacy rate wasn't spectacular in those days and someone found the word "Dail" in the dictionary and was told to spell their name that way so that it could be copied from the dictionary when needed for documents, etc. I tend to lean toward this theory.

I'm also descended from Cecil Wallace Dail and Reuben Dail. Reubin Dail married Pauline Averitte, which is another common surname in the region.

My great grandmother, Elizabeth W. Dail Buie was sister to William Henry Dail. Bob Herring, descendant of Delphia Jane Dail Herring was a neighbor of my maternal grandmother, Frances Buie Thigpen. I have met Jerry Dale, a descendant of William and Elizabeth's sister, Sarah Ann Dail. Some of Sarah Ann's descendants were also our neighbors. I did not know that they were all cousins until recent research. Our branch changed the spelling to Dale. It is a name carried on in some of the grandchildren's middle names. I have a home in Hope Mills and would like to share with other Dail/Dale cousins what information I have. Maybe we could arrange a get-together. My brother is having his MtDNA tested. Maybe that will give us a clue into Sarah Martin Dail's background.

Within the last few years I discovered that our neighbor, Bob Herring, and his family were actually related to my family. My mom kept family obituaries and was our family historian. I've pieced a few things together. My great grandmother, Elizabeth Dail Buie was Delphia Jane Dail's sister. Jerry Dale, another cousin I met in 2000, is descended from their sister, Sarah Ann. I recently asked a first cousin of my mom whether she had heard anything about there being Cherokee blood in the family. She said she had, but was told to "let sleeping dogs lie". Jerry and I would be interested in knowing the results should you do the DNA testing. I'm hoping my brother can remember where Henry and Sarah are buried at Campground UMC, so we can get markers for them.

Wondering if anyone has info on any of the following:
William Henry Chappell (Bill or Billy) md. Esther Dail in 1898 Chowan or Perquimans. Esther was the daughter of John Bartlett Dail and Sarah Elizabeth Lane. Their marriage record says Wm. Henry Chappell's parents were Henry Chappell and Keziah Elliott. I have found their marriage in 1850 Perquimans...just transcribed. Does anyone know if it's worth the trip to Salt Lake to view the film of this record, or did they give parents names as early as 1850?

I'm seeking the parents of Henry Chappell, Kesiah Elliott, and Sarah Elizabeth Lane. John Bartlett Dail and Elizabeth Lane were also married in 1850, Perquimans.

If anyone can give me good guidance on any of these, and I do go to SLC to read films, I would be happy to do a few lookups on films for you while I'm there. It's less than an hour away, but gas prices and parking are not the greatest these days. Guess I shouldn't complain.
Thanks for any tips you can give me.

During the summer she can have a full tan in one afternnon while using 30 spf!! It's really neat to see how genetics bounce around in a family, because my husband doesn't have the same coloring as our daughter, yet it comes out in her. That was one of our reasons for asking around, however, the internet has been our only source of info. Maybe one day we'll find someone willing to talk!

I don't have anything on that. I do know that the older folks in this family are very hush hush about something. When asked questions about ancestry, they either flare up and refuse to speak, or they act as if they don't know anything. I've had both things happen. Obviously when folks hide something, that makes us want to know all the more.

If you find out anything, please let me know. :)

Thank you so much! That spelling would make sense. Per the Cumberland Co., marriage docs there was a marriage for Hillery Deal and Sarah Martin for 1850, which in other documents shows that they are Henry S. and Sallie Dale/Dail. That shows a link!

Just saw your message - my father was Milton Dail from NC. His line comes from Elbert Melton Dail whose grandfather was a James Dail from Wayne Co. NC thought to be the son of Abel Dail or Thomas Dail from what was then Dobbs County. They were thought to be in Tenn. in the 1800's. Wonder if these are the same lines? If you have a male Dail who would donate DNA to familytree DNA we could prove that. My late father donated his. Only male YDNA with the Dail/Deal surname should be contributed.
