Elizabeth Larkin Dailey died of Thyphoid Fever on 8-8-1856 in Meade County Ky. On the death register her father is listed as Paddy.

I have just begun my research on this family. Her son, Larkin Daily, had a daughter (Jarusia)that married into my Stark-Kendall family.

Looks like your Dailey's are not that closely related, if at all to mine. Mine were in Missouri in 1860. They appear to be descended from William born in Ireland who immigrated to North Carolina, then Edmond P who was Abraham's father. Preble County isn't that far from Cedarville (Greene Cy), so I thought it was worth a shot. (Clermont County is a little farther south, probably not that big a deal for this nomadic clan of Dailey's!) I just have to believe they moved back to OH because there was family in that area. I just have not been able to establish a link. We might have to trace the line back to Ireland to find where our ancestral lines cross!

Thanks for checking.

That looked to be pretty close for me but I couldn't find a Joseph in my tree at that time. I've attached my 1860 census Monroe Township of Clermont(?)county..

Nathaniel Dailey 57
Elizabeth Dailey 41
Obediah Walker Dailey 22 >Frank Nathaniel>Donald Dailey>Donald Douglas>me
Benjamen Dailey 13
Nathaniel Dailey 3
Emma Dailey 2
plus 3 more from Elizabeth's prior marriage...

It's not impossible tho that your Abraham could have been related to my GGG grandfather Nathaniel but as you can see, he was born in New Jersey in 1810.
If you are descended from Joseph S Daily (Dailey?) (born OH 1846), we are related. My family is descended from Abraham (Abram?) Daily whose family including sons Joseph S and John P returned to OH with their mother Elizabeth after several children and Abraham died in Missouri. I have been unable to find anything on Joseph after returning to OH. John P lived in New Hope, Preble Cy, and passed away in the 1940's. His daughter Ruth was my grandmother, and believe it or not, lived for some time in Cedarville where my father graduated from HS. If this sounds familiar and you're still out there, email me at PKoppe1@aol.com and I can share more family info.

Hi Flo,
Do you have copied of those "Indian Applications filed in 1901 for the Kansas Land Claims of Brothertown Indians"..?
I have several and have requested these out of NARA in Washington DC for the past 4-5 years now. I have almost everyone who filed and was rejected in Rhode Island. In reviewing some of them, I cam across something interesting, that I wsanted to share with you. (I'll keep looking for the Rodman descendent files)...

Helen D. Banks, who lived in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1901 filed one of these applications. Here is some of the information, check this out:

She was born November 27, 1867 in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. She says that she is Narragansett and Brothertown. Her claim is because, "I am a descendant of William Sampson who emigrated to Brothertown in 1825 and died there".

Her husbands name is Richard E. Banks, she says he is not an Indian.

Their children are: Richard E. Banks, Amie D. Banks and Frederick Banks.

Her parents are: William H. White
and her mother is "Susan A. Dailey"

Where were they born? Father: Not an Indian, mother was born in East Thompson, Connecticut (not all Dailey's left CT being my point for this posting)...

Name all their children: Nelson Latham (half brother)
Helen D. Banks, the applicant

State the death deates of your mother and father:
For father: unknown
For mother (remember this is 1901), living

State your grandparents:
On father's side - father was Christopher White, not an indian.
On father's side - mother - unknown

On mother's side - father: WELCOME DAILEY - Narragansett
On mother's side - mother: Susan Sampson, Narragansett

Where did they reside? Rhode Island and Connecticut

Give names of all their children:
Henry W. Dailey - Apponaug, Rhode Island
Helen M. Jones - Providence, Rhode Island

To expedite your application, identificatgion, please add notes here:

"My great grandfather William Sampson went to Brothertown in 1825. Susan Sampson daughter of William was the mother of Susan A. Latham who is the mother of Helen D. Banks (myself, the applicant).

Interesting to see that the Dailey's of this line actually were Narragansett Indians.

Enjoy, I will hunt down what I can through my genealogy work and mountains of paper on your Rodman, Niles, etc.
Caesar Lippitt (Slave) and Sarah Dailey (Indian) of Warwick mid 1700s

Hello everyone,
I just heard about this area and the topic of Dailey's. While this is not my family, there are collateral lines of this genealogy which cross into my own maternal collateral lines.

In the Rhode Island Genealogical Publication, RI Roots, Volume 33. No. 2 published June 2007, you can find an extensive work of genealogy done by Cherry Fletcher Bamberg, genealogist who often contributes articles on people of color.

The story begins with 3 slaves left in the will of a man named Moses Lippitt (he is the white slave owner)...the story goes on to catalog the genealogy of the Lippitt slave men, their wifes and families they married into with their children right up to about 1880/1900. It's an extensive piece of work.

My dear friend Carol Palavra, passed away on Tuesday, she was a Nipmuc elder and we were the best of genealogy buddies, sharing stories etc. for the last 11 years. Carol was looking for a "Sarah, possibly Dailey" who would have been the mother to her Harriet (Dailey) Curless. This article on the Lippitts, Prophets, Dailey/Daley's, leads up to the Indian Nurse who passed away in Providence in 1915, there is very rich content. I would suggest you get copies from the RIGS (Rhode Island Genealogical Society) and write them for reprints of the article.

Although, Carol's Harriet (Dailey) Curless was born in circa 1830, she would have been born much to late to be the Caesar and Sarah (Dailey) Lippitt's child. However, I do believe there is a connection somewhere. The Lippitt brothers (2 of the 3) assuming they were brothers, did marry Indian women by the name of Dailey.

It's an interesting article. Great job done by Cherry Fletcher Bamberg.

Enjoy the article.

Cherry Fletcher Bamberg has been deciphering Indian and Black genealogy in Rhode Island from the 1774 Revolutionary War Rolls, one at a time. If you haven't joined RI Genealogical Society and signed up to get their publication 4 times a year, I can tell you all, you're missing out. Check out past publications, you'll found a mountain of information and great sources verifying their work.

Good luck

Eleanor Dailey Dement

My Eleanor Dailey (b. 1783 - Chester Co., PA) married William Dement on in West Liberty, Ohio Co., VA (now WV) in 1801. She has been linked to Owen Dailey and Sarah L. Morris, but the dates don't jive unless Owen was married twice. Additionally her oldest son's are named Vincent and George and her oldest daughters are Sarah and Margaret. Her husband's parents are George and Sarah. There is no Owen in her line. I remembered that there were a number of Vincent Dailey's but I cannot seem to connect her to any of them in that area of Virginia, or where she settled in Monroe County Ohio.

Any help or guidance of where to look would be greatly appreciated.

Daniel and Nancy Davis Triplett were my ancestors through John Robert and his son, George Washington Dailey. Daniel was first married to Mary Ann (Polly) Beasley on November 02, 1843 in Monroe Co., TN. After Polly's death he married Nancy on November 20, 1852 in Monvoe Co., TN. According to the 1880 Monroe Co., TN census, Daniel was born in County Cork, Ireland. Lore has it that he changed the spelling of his last name after coming to America. Have quite a bit of information on the family.

Martin Van Buren Dailey m. Mary Jane Sinclair (Saint Claire) Clark

I am looking for more information on my great great grandparents. I have a brief family history passed down by their daughter Dora Dailey, and by their granddaughter Hazel Linthincum. I am really interested in finding a photograph of them or of Mary Jane in particular. The Martin Van Buren Dailey she married was born in 1844 in Adams, Illinois and died in 1917 Nebraska. He is buried in the Andrew Cemetary near Friend, Nebraska next to his father David. Mary Jane died in 1914 or 1916 in Colorado Springs, Colorado and she is buried there. Their children were: Alice Josephine Clark (from her first marriage to Alexander Clark), Sarah A., Charles, Louie May, Cora Gladys, Dora (my great grandmother), Edna and Amanda.

I would love to have pictures of his children and grandchildren if anyone has some to share.

Hope to hear from someone!
Carrie Dailey Blake

Hal, Ellenor C. White married James E. Daily on Jan 21, 1853 in Randolph County, IN. I have James and Ellenor both being born in Clinton County, Ohio and living there in 1850. By 1853 they are in Randolph County, IN where they were married. I found Ellenor in 1870 census without James in Jay County, IN. I can't find them in 1860? James and Ellenor, Nathan and Mary are buried in the Fairview Cemetery in Fairview, IN.

http://www.ingenweb.org/inrandolph/Green/Fairview/fcburials....

Some have associated James and Ellenor to the Carpenter line but that is false. The father and mother of this James Daily is Thomas and Frances Daily of Clinton, Ohio.

If you have or need more info let me know. Mark Price

Re: DAILEY, Margaret /or Michael Buffalo NY 1900

My husband is Kenneth Roth, son of Edward Roth, gson of August Roth who was the father of your Catherine who married Michael Dailey. I started off with the Kirsh family who married into the Roth family then continued with August Roth, our first immigrant. Have some Dailey stuff but haven't got it organized much yet. Hope this helps

The John Kirsh family originated in the Alsace-Lorraine region of France/Germany. This is the reason he is stated to be French or German in various documents. The history of this area is full of alternate rule by both countries, as well as immigration into this region by Swiss and Germans fleeing various wars. At the year of his immigration, about 1832 at the age of 18, this region was ruled by France. By the time of his death in 1888 the region was ceded to Germany by the Treaty of Frankfurt. Since the KIRSCH surname is basically of German origin, it is most likely his ethnic origin.

John Kirsch was born 27 Jun 1824 in the Alsace Lorraine region of France, son of Jacob and Barbara Kirsch. He immigrated about 1832 which was in the greatest period for immigration to the United States from this region. He married Mary Anna Burckhardt 28 Nov 1850 in Williamsville, Erie County, New York. Mary Anna was the daughter of Catherine and Michael Burckhardt and she was born 24 Feb 1831 in Germany. She immigrated to the United States about 1846 at the age of 15.

An interesting observation about the marriage of John and Mary Anna in November of 1850 is that, although they both lived in Buffalo at the time, they chose to travel to Williamsville to get married, some 25 to 30 miles away. No mean feat in November. There may have been trains to the area available, which would be something to look into. But the most likely method would have been four legged. Cart, stage, horse, whatever, the question would have been, why? It has all the signs of an elopement. Could it have been the birth of Catherine, a short nine months later 25 Aug 1851?

Frank (Francis) Kirsch was born next in July of 1855 in Buffalo, New York. He was married twice, one wife being Sybil, and produced six children. The 1910 Federal Census has the family living next door to his brother-in-law, August Roth on Niagara Street in Buffalo. At that time Frank was 57 years old and his wife, Sibly, was 53. They had been married for 20 years, a second marriage for Frank, and she had given birth to six still living children. Children living at home were; Frank, Jr. age 19 and John J. age 17 were both employed as plumbers. Jacob R. was 15 years old.

Michael Kirsch was born 20 Jul 1857 in Buffalo and had six children also.

The 1860 Federal Census shows the Kirsch family living in Ward 12 in Buffalo. John was age 35 and employed as a laborer. His place of birth was listed as France. Mary Anna was 26 and her place of birth is unreadable. The children are listed as Catherine age 7, Frank age 4, and Michael, age 2. They claimed a value of real estate as $500 and personal value at $150.

Their son Jacob was born 29 Sep 1864 in Buffalo. Jacob married Mary Meyers. Buffalo City Directory has him living at 200 Exchange Street in Buffalo and working at the Buffalo Furnace Company. He died 29 Nov 1888, five months after his father, at the age of 24 years 2 months, 7 days. He is buried in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery on River Road in Buffalo, New York. Jacob had gone fishing off the Niagara River. His hat is all that was found on shore. His body was recovered days later near Niagara Falls. He had on his body his father's watch, which was given to Edward Roth, son of Catherine Kirsch, his sister, and August Roth

The 1870 Federal Census shows John Kirch and wife Maria in Ward 12 of Buffalo. He is 46 years old and working as a carpenter. It says he has real estate worth $300 and personal worth of $200. He is listed as being born in France. His wife, Maria is age 36 and born in Prussia. The children, all born in New York, are Catharine age 20, Frank age 16 and what looks to be "works on crown", Michael age 13 and Jacob 6. Maria cannot write.

John Kirsh died at the age of 64 years, one month, four days, on 09 Jul 1888. Although his death certificate states he died of accute pneumonia, a newspaper article dated 10 Jul 1888 says "He had just rowed across the river and was taken suddenly ill" and that he had died of heart disease. At that time the family was living at 2047 Niagara Street in Buffalo. His death certificate states he had lived in this city for 56 years and that he was born in Germany. He is buried in St. Francis Xavior Cemetery on River Road in Buffalo.

The 1900 Federal Census shows "Maria" Kirsch, mother-in-law to head of household August Roth, living at 414 Dearborn Street in Buffalo. This record is very hard to read, but it looks like she states she was born in February of 1832 in Germany and that she had been here for 56 years having immigrated in 1846. It also states she had four children, two of which are still living. It must be noted here that obviously dates and number of years don't quite jive. Such is the way with census records.

Mary Anna Kirsch died at the age of 72, one month, six days, on 29 Mar 1903 of dropsy. At that time she was still living with her daughter Catherine's family on Dearborn Street. Her death certificate shows she had been born in Germany and had been in the US for 57 years. It gives her parents names and Michael and Catherine Burckhardt. She too is buried in St. Francis Xavior Cemetery in Buffalo.

August Roth was born 28 Jan 1851 near Alsace Lorraine son of Joseph L. Roth and Rosina Schmeltz. The story of his immigration, with only slight variation, has been passed to the many branches of his descendents. It has been difficult to prove this story with historical records however. Part of the problem is the spelling of the surname for the Schmeltz family. In the following, the spelling is shown as it is in the record quoted.

The story is that Rosina died when August was three years old. When his father remarried, it was decided to send him to Rosina's brother, Vincent Schmelz, who had immigrated to America. One version of the story is that Joseph's new wife didn't want to raise August, however, in 1853, war broke out between the Ottoman and Russian empires. This may have been reason enough to send August out of the county. In any case, August was shipped like baggage, with a tag around his neck in 1856. He was put into the care of the ship's captain and was expected to do chores. This may be why it is difficult to find him in ship passenger records. If he was listed at all, it may have been as crew. After arrival in America, he was put on a vessel traveling the Erie Canal to be picked up by his uncle in Buffalo, New York. From then on, until his marriage in 1873, he was known as August Schmelz. He did not become aware of his real name until then. His uncle told him his real name days before the wedding, and on the advise of the pastor at St Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, got married under his real name.

Vincent Schmeltz immigrated around 1851 at the age of 24. The 1860 Federal Census has Fincenci Smeltz in the 12th Ward at age 31 working as a joiner and his place of birth being Saxony. His value of real estate being $400 and personal worth as $50. His wife Barbara was age 33. His children are listed as Augustus age 8, Rosa age 7, Catherine age 5, Fuia age 3, and Marian age one. He appears in a list of people owing excise taxes to the State of New York dated July 1866. He is listed as living at East and Austin in Buffalo, New York and owing Income tax on $11 at the rate of 5% for a total owed of $.50. In 1869 he is in the Buffalo City Directory as Schmeltz, Vincenz, carpenter, at 257 East Street.

The 1870 Federal Census lists Vincent Smeltz age 43 working as a carpenter, and his place of birth being Prussia. It shows he owns a real estate value of $2,377 and a personal worth of $377. His wife Barbara is age 45 and also born in Prussia. The children, born in New York, were Rosa age 16, Catherine age 14, Seraphine age 12, Mary age 10, and finally August age 18 and born in Prussia. All census records record the children in order of birth, with others in the home listed after them. It seems significant that August was last in this household listing although still with the Smeltz surname.

We next see Vincent in 1874 in a Buffalo City directory, a carpenter, living at 257 East Street in Buffalo. The same year shows August Roth, carpenter, living at 85 Austin Street in Buffalo. A year earlier, however, there is no Schmelz but an August Schmely, carpenter, living at 257 East Street. This helps identify when August took back his true surname. The 1875 City Directory shows Vincent Schmelz, carpenter still living at 257 East Street, and August Roth, carpenter, living at Thompson near Austin. In 1876, August Roth, carpenter, was at the same address and Vincent Schmelz, carpenter, moved to Austin, corner of Gorton. The 1876 directory also shows John Kirsch, carpenter, living at 2047 Niagara Street in Buffalo. He would have been about 52 years old.

The 1880 Federal Census shows Vinzens Schmelz at age 51, born in Saxony and working as a carpenter. His wife Barbara was also born in Saxony and was age 55. The children still at home were Josephine age 21 and doing housework and Maria age 20 and doing housework as well. They lived at 98 Austin Street in Buffalo with two other families living in the same building. This census indicated that Vincent was sick or disabled and unable to be employed on the date the census was taken. This may be why they have moved from a single house to a multible dwelling.

August followed in his uncle Vincent's footsteps and became a carpenter. Among the many buildings and homes in the Buffalo area built by August was the first All Saints Church. He and his two sons, Edward and John had the church finished for the first mass on Christmas Day in 1911, completely plastered and shingled within one week.

On 25 Oct 1874, Franz, the first son of August and Catharine was born. He lived less than ten months, dying 12 Aug 1875 and was buried in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery on River Road in Buffalo, New York.

Eight months later, on 18 Apr 1876, their second son, Vincent, was born. He attended St. Francis Xavier School and School 20 in Buffalo and then entered the building business with his father, August. He later went into contracting independently. He was elected to the Buffalo Common Council in 1935 as a Republican and served two terms. According to his nephew Augustine Roth, it was during this time that Vincent put his nephew on the Buffalo City payroll as a laborer while he had been working on lake steamers at the same time. The country was just coming out from the depression at that time and money was tight all over. Vincent married Othillia Stapell who was born 29 Sep 1877 and died 16 Nov 1952. Othillia's sister, Magdalen, married Vincent's brother John. Vincent and his wife had two children, Leo, born 19 Jul 1899 and also a building contractor, and Eva, born 28 Aug 1900. Leo August Roth registered for the draft during WWII at the age of 19. He listed his occupation as carpenter and was tall with a medium build, with black hair and brown eyes. Although his father was Chairman of the Draft Board in his district at the time, he did not sign Leo's draft card. Vincent died 19 Mar 1956 at the age of 79. After a requiem mass in All Saints Church, he was buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Buffalo, New York.

Catherine was born 14 Feb 1878. She married Michael Dailey, born 08 Dec 1875, died 21 Jun 1967. Michael's sister Margaret married Catherine's brother Edward. As a young man, Michael Dailey worked on the Panama Canal. Michael and Catherine had two children, Augustine born 07 Aug 1915 who served with the Marines in WWII and Michael, born 23 Jul 1917 who served with the Army during WWII. Augustine married Ruth Kean and Michael married Rose Knoll.
Catherine died 01 Feb 1954.

Barbara was born 11 Nov 1879 and died four months later on 29 Mar 1880 and is buried in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery.

The 1880 Federal Census shows the family living at 101 Forest Street with the name spelled Rode.
August was age 29 and a carpenter. He states he and his parents were born in Saxony. Katherina was 28 and keeping house. She states she was born in New York. Where her parents were born is unreadable but appears to be Alsace. The children are listed as Vinzens, age 4, and Katherina, age 2.

Josephine was born 09 May 1881. She married Jerome Laible and had three children, Jerome born 14 Apr 1908, James George born 25 Jul 1910, and Vincent born 31 Jan 1912. At a double wedding on 04 Sep 1937 Jerome married Jessie Roughhead and James married Margaret O'Conner.

Edward Jacob was born 18 Apr 1883. His story will continue in the next chapter.

Eleanor was born 30 Nov 1884. She married George Stewart in 1909. They had five children: George, who married Virginia Sypple; John married Edith Perry; Robert married Doris Strym; Eleanor and Elizabeth. Eleanor died 24 Sep 1961.

John was born 15 Feb 1887. John married Magdalen Stapell and they had four children. August would have counted on Catherine's mother to help care for the young children as she lived just a block away. Indeed, after the death of John Kirsh in 1888, Mary Anna moved into August's home at 414 Dearborn Street and stayed even after his remarriage until her death in 1903.

About 1896, August Roth married his second wife, Mary Robinson, who was born on 28 Nov 1856.

The first child of this union was Francis who was born 14 Jul 1898. His language spoken was German.

The address on the 1920 Federal Census is mostly unreadable, but it appears it may be 299 Roesch Avenue in Buffalo. Francis states she was 25 at the time of her first marriage.

At some time during his life, August probably was a member of the New York State Militia. There is a dress sword with his name engraved on it which matches a similar one in the Buffalo Museum of History. That sword is now in the possession of Kenneth Roth, son of Augustine Roth.

August died 21 Feb 1931 at his home 299 Roesch Avenue. He had a heart attack due to high blood pressure and hardening of the arteries. He had been working as a building contractor for forty years and had been retired since 1916. His Certificate of Death states that he had been living in Buffalo, New York for 77 years. His father was named as Joseph L. Roth and his mother as Rosina Schmeltz, both of Germany.
