Hi, Mary, Thanks for the reply. This thread is getting complicated with people searching different lines.

Here's some info for ubmac:

Ancestry.com has Thomas DAIN (1755 - 1841, OH) m. Nancy _ (1764, Ireland - 1851, OH). Thomas was of Rich Hill, Muskingum Co., OH, for census of 1840. Sons included James DAIN (1800, PA - 29 Aug. 1865, IL), & Robert DAIN (1798, Oil City, Venango Co., PA - 6 Je. 1882, Union, Muskingum, OH) who married Elizabeth HENDERSON (ca. 1799 - 24 Feb. 1880). Robert & wf. were of Muskingum Co., OH, in 1850, with Margaret, 19; Nancy, 17; Harriet, 15; Mary, 11; & Robert, 9; also Nancy, 86 in 1850, b. Ireland. Elizabeth DAIN (1795 - 1830) m. 27 Jan. 1825, Alex. HENDERSON (19 June 1806 - 12 Sep. 1879, Marion, IA).

James DAIN / DANE / DEAN (ca. 1800, Pennsylvania - 29 Aug. 1865) married 3 Sep. 1828, Guernsey Co., OH, Lucinda CULVER. Her birth has been listed as in 1815, but that would have made her 13 at marriage. Ancestry lists their children as Thomas, b. ca. 1830; Levi Lewis, b. 1832; Mary, b. 183[5?]; Robert Officer DAIN (1837 - 1910); Hannah, b. 1838; Lucretia, b. 1840; Elizabeth, 1842; James Wm. (1844 - 12 Sep. 1931, Christian Co., IL); John (1850/1, IL - 1897, Christian Co., IL); Basil; & Sarah.

I found the family on the Christian Co., IL, census of 1860, DANE, James, 60, b. PA: Loucinda, 46, OH; James W., 16, OH; Elizabeth, 14, OH: & John, 10, IL.

Strangely, in Central Twp., St. Louis, MO, 1860, DUNN, James, 60, PA; Lucinda, 46, OH; Elizabeth, 18, OH; James, 17, OH: John, 9, IL; Robert, 23, OH; Lucreta, 20, IL.

The two households have many similarities, so I think the family must have been counted twice. Robert had m. 8 Dec. 1859, Sangamon Co., IL, Lucretia A. CUNNINGHAM. Notice that there are different ages, especially for Elizabeth, as reported in IL & MO.

In 1880, Benton, Ringgold, IA, DAIN:
Robert, 44, b. OH, father b. PRATER
--from the online Illinois Statewide Marriage Index

Sorry, I haven't verified this. I'm just providing some clues. It's too bad we cannot find the family in 1850. I tried several spellings.

My DAIN / DANE line is from Abraham of Maine & Connecticut through Deborah, who was born in Pennsylvania and lived in Muskingum & other counties in Ohio. She m. Adam SHANER & had Martin, b. 1815, OH.
Your Dains were English. mine were Scot Irish who came to the US from Co. Donegal Ireland. Yes, we have documentation of the name being spelled Dean, both in Ireland and the US. There is no connection between our Dains, but I did meet some Dains who live near Rochester NY whose Dain family was of English origin.

Thanks for posting. Do you know whether there is any connection to Abraham DAIN of early New England? Abraham was of Casco, ME, & New London, CT. He m. Dec. 1671, Sarah PEAKE, who m2. 1691, Micah ROOD.

I checked online. I couldn't find anything back to 1720. However, Major DAIN witnessed the marriage of Edwd. GRIPTON & Mary BAILEY, 23 Oct. 1770, Ellenhall, Staffordshire.

Genealogical Memoirs of the Browne Family of Caverswall & Shredicote, Staffordshire: By indentures of 24 & 25 Mar. 1785, Major DAIN, in consideration of £30 pd. by Rev. Sampson WRIGHT, vicar, and the churchwardens & overseers of the poor of the parish of Bradley, [deeded] three gardens at Coton Clanford, Seighford, Staffordshire...

Major DAIN was a church warden of Ranton, per report of Aug. 1773.

Major DAIN & wf. Mary had Elizabeth, bapt. 14 Sep. 1781, & Christopher, bpt. 25 Apr. 1784, Seighford.

Major & W. DAIN were named in 1798, Land Tax Redemption, Haughton, Staffordshire.

Major DAIN (ca. 1751, Compton - 1834, Ranton) m. 4 Apr. 1795, Ranton, Mary BRINDLEY (ca. 1747 - 29 Oct. 1835), dau/o Henry BRINDLEY, Jr. (1706, Colton - 1777, Rugeley). [See GenForum > BRINDLEY.]

In 1834, there was a Major DAIN, farmer, of Long Hampton, Ranton Parish, Pirehill Hundred, Staffordshire.

John Averill DAIN d. 9 Aug. 1941, Manor Hospital, Staffordshire, widow Edith A. DAIN.

I guess it's O.K. to include this because it's already online: John A. DAIN was born third quarter 1932, Walsall, Staffordshire. John A. DAIN m. third quarter 1958, Joan M. WHITEHOUSE, Stafford Book 9b 1143.

John Averill DAIN & Peter Edward WHITE were named as personal representatives in the estate of John Alfred DAIN, 50 Harden Road, Leamore, Walsall, W. Midlands, retired butcher, 9 July 1983.

Have you found records where the surname is spelled DEAN? Have you found alternate spellings for Major?

My ex husband is John Averill Dain, who has done a lot of research into his family. We can trace the Dains back to Major Dain c1720, mostly living in or around Ashley and Maer in north staffs. He is now almost 80 and not in good health, so I have taken over the family tree if anyone is interested. regards Jone Morganti (Dain)

H. CLARK m. 1867, MI, Benona / Benoni DAIN / DANE(S)

I haven't been able to find parents of Benona W. DAIN / DANE, but he might be related to the other family that was of Kalamazoo at the same time and also moved to Nebraska.

The Ancestry census database of the 1840 Census of Vermont has in Rutland County
DAIN: Bidge, David, Lemual, & Stephen L. [Bidge is probably short for Oxenbridge.]
Franklin Co., DANE: Edward
Orleans Co., DANE, James, Jedediah, Joseph, & Louis.
There were also many DEAN entries in various counties.

In 1850, Orleans Co., VT, there was a Warren DEAN. Then in 1860, Rensselaer Co., NY, there was a Warren B. DNSHU, 17, b. Vermont. Could Benona's middle initial W. have stood for Warren?

FamilySearch.org: Benona W. DAIN m. 10 Feb. 1867, Kalamazoo, MI, Harriet E. CLARK.

Ancestry has Benoni DANE, Union Army, Civil War (no further information on the free site).

Kalamazoo Co., MI, 1870, DANE:
Benonis, 27; Harriet, 26; Anna, 2.
E. R., 40; Julia, 34; Charles, 14; Ella, 12; Edna, 10; Ida, 8; Truman, 6; Orland, 3.

Oak Ck., Webster Co., NE, 1880
Elias DAINS, 53, VT VT VT
Julia Ann, 45, OH NH NY
son Oland, 14, & dau. Carey, 9, b. MI; sons Emery, 4, & Edwin, 2 mos., b. NE.

Mill Creek, Franklin, AR, 1880
Benona W. DAIN, 35, VT MA VT
Wf. Harriett, 34, NY NY NY
daus. Anna, 12, MI; Edie, 8, NE.

Edie m. 24 Jan. 1889, Franklin Co., AR, Wm. J. ROGERS and had Leaffer Ellen, b. Dec. 1889, AR. Wm. m2. 5 Sep. 1892, Mary E. HONEA.

FamilySearch.org has Elias Royal DAIN (22 Je. 1828, Middlebury, Addison, VT - 17 Aug. 1921, Hebron, Thayer, NE; s/o Kaiser [sic, Elias Keyes] & Mary) m. Julia Ann / Juliann J. BROWN (12 Je. 1835, Sandusky, Erie, OH - 30 Jan. 1910, Hebron, NE) d/o Charles & Alvira.

Elias R. was son of Elias Keyes "Kize" DAIN (Nov. 1802, Windham Co., CT - 23 Jan. 1893, Farmer Twp., Defiance Co., OH) & Mary MARTIN, m. 19 Feb. 1824, Rochester, VT. Farmer P. O., Defiance Co., OH, 1860, DANE, E. K., 57, & Mary, 57. RootsWeb Family Trees has ancestry back to immigrant Abraham through Oxenbridge DAIN who married cousin Abigail DAIN. The spelling is variously DEAN, DANE, DAIN, sometimes with final S / ES.

USGenWeb > AR > Franklin Co.: Harriet & Annie DANE transferred from Fleeman to Gar Creek United Methodist Church, March 1885. When the church closed in 1988, records were to be sent to the Ft. Smith District Superintendent's Office.

Benoni is a Biblical name meaning child of sorrow, which usually meant that somebody had died around the time of the child's birth.

Can you think of any other clues?

(My line is from the immigrant Abraham through Deborah DANE(S) / DAIN (1791 - 1869), who m. Adam SHANER of Ohio.)

Dain and Mary ? (born 1714)
Regards
carey

I tried to send an "hourglass" representation of my paternal and maternal lines with the Dain (father's mother) line added. But it doesn't like PowerPoint files. I have another more detailed traditonal structure from which the Dain line was extracted, but that is on paper! Please email me on johncareybennett@yahoo.co.uk, so I can start sending you details in a standard format. Bennett family legend has it that the Dain founder was the younger brother of a Dayne who changed his name after a family row! Granny Bennett was well-loved and died in 1972.
My brother and I have a geneology chart that takes in Julianna and her father's parents and his parents. We confirm "steve1" and his details. We always understood that the Dain name started just two or so generations before. Delighted to share what we have - looking at the various websites, we realise that none of the American Dain family are included. Please contact us:
Carey and Martyn Bennett

OMG does it ever!

I'm not certain that I know your Dora, although there is a known Shuman connection to this Jake Dain. My Jake Dain did live in NYC, was Jewish & must be the same person.

Jake's first wife had 5 sisers & 2 half siblings. His sister-in-law Rebecca had two daughters, one of whom was my grandmother Harriet & the other was my great-aunt Edna.

Edna married David Musicant, they lived in Teaneck, NJ & owned both a florist shop as well as a funeral home. The funeral home is actually still in business and in family hands to this day.

I have never acually bumped into anyone who had an actual connection to anyone I've ever posted about. I cannot tell you how thrilled I was when I saw your post. Please email me at morgannia@gmail.com.

I would love to share further information with you.

~~~ kelticsoul
Hi there. I'm looking for info on a Jake Dain (Dane?) married to Dora Schuman (her married name) - he was her second husband. They lived in nyc and were jewish (i think she was from austria/hungary). She was my great-grandmother. They did not have any children together that I know of but he could have been married previously.
Also, there may (or may not) be some connection to Teaneck, NJ and a Musicant family who owned a florists and funeral parlor. Let me know if this makes any connections for you.
Thanks,
-Heather
Can't say for sure what his religious affiliation was. I have his obit but it doesn't mention it. The only other things I know was that his original trade was a locksmith, and after marrying Caroline his occupation was listed as Mason, which was the Wolf family business called "E. Wolf & Sons". After the father died, they called the business "Dain & Wolf".
Most of them are buried at Fairmount cemetery in Newark, NJ.
Yes, please keep me in mind, I will do the same if I find out anything further.
Ray
Possibly . . . I haven't find any documentation on my Dain's yet, but I've only been doing genalogical research for less than 4 months & the information I have is based on family recollections.
Do you know if the Dain who married into your family was Jewish? I don't know if Jake or Jacob Dain was Jewish, but my family that he married into was. I'll keep the names you listed in mind & if I dig up anything similar, I'll be sure to post it for you. :D
~~~ laura

Don't know if it's the same Dain family, but there was a Frederick H. Dain (1851-1902) born in New York who married into my family. He married Caroline Wolf sometime in the 1870's. They had 4 children Louise, Lenore, Lillian, Edna. Apparently Fred had a brother John, sister or sister-in-law also named Caroline (or Carrie). Fred & Caroline lived in Newark, NJ. I haven't looked into the Dain branch too deeply yet, but if you find they are related, I'd be interested in sharing info.

Hello,

I'm looking for any information on Dain's from New York or NYC. Specifically, I'm looking on information on Jake or Jacob Dain, who married Malaka (sp?) Vigodr/Wigdor/Victorvitch/Wigdorwitz (among other variations) who would have come from Bielske Russia/Ukraine/Belarus & currently Poland (it changed hands a lot). They might have settled in NY, Brooklyn, especially, but I'm not sure. He might have been a truck driver. They had 3 kids, probably born between 1900-1915 - Rose, Charlie (Charles) & Sylvia who went on to marry ? Goldberg.

Malaka had 4 full sisters - Leah, Rebecca (my g-grandmother), Verka (sp?), Baylah (sp?) & 2 half or step siblings Abraham & Mindal Rosenblum.

If any of this sounds remotely familar, please contact me, we have information to exchange.

~~~ laura
My ancestor, Lemuel Dain, lived in the Rutland Vermont area and died there in 1852. No Juliannas in his offspring. He had a brother Oxenbridge (1771-1860)who married in 1799. Maybe Oxenbridge (also called O.B.) is Julianna Dain's father. Some information I have says that Lemuel and Oxenbridge's father was Zachariah Deanes.
Frederick Dain, a locksmith and later mason/builder originally from NY married Caroline (Carrie) Wolf, my Aunt between 1870-1880. They had 4 daughters Louise M., Lillian E., Lenora H., and Edna S. I do not know any family names that these ladies may have married into, but I'd be interested to know what happened to them. If they are in your history, we are cousins. Feel free to contact me! Fred & Caroline lived in Caroline's Parent's home (probably renting another floor) at 23 Court St., Newark NJ. By 1910 the Dain daughters moved 2 doors up to #27 Court. By 1920, Louise & Edna moved to 90 Elizabeth Ave., Newark. (Owned by Louise).
Researching Staffordshire Dain family, my ancestress Mary Dain was baptized at Mear, Staffordshire, and had the following siblings: John, Francis, Joseph. Seem to be relatives of a Major F. Dain at Ashley. Family may have connections to Christopher Dain of Haughton, Staffordshire.
Left for Toronto, Ontario and lived in East York, Oshawa, and Caradoc.
I have grandson just south of Gatwick Airport.
My Dain research has gone fairly well and I did make the connection with the Dain Family of Haughton. Two of Christoper Dain's sons; Major and John came to Ashley and Hook's Gate.
John Dain had a son John Dain and his brother had a son John Dain.
John Dain's son John had a daughter Mary who married William George Norris who emmigrated to Yorkville and then Bowmanville, Upper Canada before migrating to Victoria, on Vancouver Island.
So yes I would like to hear about the other Dain researchers.
Don Norris
I too have wondered about the Ohio James Dain. My family immigrated from Co. Donegal Ireland to NYS in 1840s to 1850s. I know other members of same family went to PA and then west. Were your Dains Irish? If so I might have info that would be helpful.
They lived in Muskingum Co.,OH
in 1840, have not found him in 1850 but he migrated
to IL and is on the 1860 Christian Co., IL
census. There are DAIN/DANE families listed
in Muskingum Co., are they related?
Jame's parents were Thomas Dain born Ireland c. 1755 died
1841 in Norwich, Ohio and Nancy born circa 1764 and died in
1851 in Norwich, Ohio. The children of Thomas and Nancy that I have found so far are Thomas m: Prudence unknownlastname, John m: Catherine Sellars, Elizabeth married Alexander Henderson , Robert married Elizabeth Henderson and James married Lucinda Culver. Thomas I believe settled in Indiana, John stayed in Ohio in Licking County; Robert remained in Muskingum County, Ohio, Elizabeth stayed in Ohio but I believed died young, and James moved to Illinois. There might be more but have not connected them.
Let me know if this helps.
I have
traced the Dain family back to Thomas Dain born
circa 1755 in Ireland. I have many records to
share including the probate records from Stella
and from her mother Sarah.
thank you for replying to me. It is an unusual name. I am interested in its connection with my name of Pittaway, as relatives were named Thomas Dain Pittaway. He lived in Wednesbury,Staffordshire, in the l880s and some of the relatives went to Canada and the USA.
I havent done any research for sometime on that line. I live in the area at present, England, but I know someone in America or Canada, who is tracing that line.
Best wishes, jill Blackham
