I'm researching my great grandmother's family. Her name is Violet Elizabeth Daines. She was born in Lansing Iowa to (Gilbert) Lafayette Daines. All the trees have Andrew Daines listed as the father of Lafayette which is very likely because Andrew is buried in Lansing. ( This town is so small it only has one stop light.) My problem is that every census for Lafayette has his father being born in Penn and his mother being born in France which makes it impossible for Roseanne Spears of Ohio to be his mother. I also spent hours and hours tracing history through Asa Daines and now everyone is leaning towards Ebenezer being his father.

Hi, Robert!
I really need some help resolving the parentage of Andrew Amdrice Dains. My earliest research seemed to clearly indicate Asa Dains/Jane Kasson as his parents. Lately, I'm finding more researchers adamantly pointing to Ebenezer Dains/Margaret Beard. Unfortunately, all data is off other trees. I've found no definitive source material. I'm afraid my possible error in accepting Asa Dains/Jane Kasson as my 4XG Grandparents could literally wipe out 1,000 yrs of ancestry (through the Kasson line) that connected me directly to Charlemagne and beyond. Ah well, the truth is what's important so I'll continue researching until I find that "smoking gun" aiming one way or the other. I'm now developing a new tree with Ebenezer Dains/Margaret Beard (Baird) as my 4XG Grandparents and I'll keep both trees active until the issue is resolved. I would appreciate any input or resources you may have. It appears you've done quite a bit of research on this line.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Bob Hoff

Andrew A. DAINS (1797 - 1883)

Hello, Robert,

Sorry, I do not have a "smoking gun" that proves that Andrew Amdrice was son of Ebenezer DAIN(E/S). Most researchers, including those who have worked a long time on this family, list him as son of Ebenezer, and his census path seems to show that. There are quite a few notes for him on the RootsWeb site. Click FamilyTrees in the strip at the top of the RootsWeb page and then click Advanced Search.

Death record on Pilot.FamilySearch.org for Calvin DAINS, s/o Asa, said he was born in 1793 in Vermont & died 27 Je. 1879, Athens Co., OH. Asa was an early resident at Belpre, Washington Co., OH, where Dolly was probably born in 1795 & Kassen/Kasson was born in 1798. Census of 1860 says Dolly SHUMWAY was born in Ohio. In 1870, I think the census says Oo for Ohio. The children have ditto marks. In 1880, Washington SHUMWAY said his mother was b. Ohio. From Washington Co., OH, Asa went to Meigs Co., OH.

Bob DEAN says Andrew A. (enlisted 15 Je. 1814 from Washington Co., PA, Company A, 22nd Rgt., infantry, under Capt. Wm. MORROW) was wounded 15 Aug. 1814, and received a pension in 1845. [Pension record might help.]

Since censuses show that Andrew was born in Pennsylvania, and he served from Pennsylvania, it seems unlikely that he was a son of Asa.

Andrew has been "placed" as one of the males in the household of Ebenezer in Spencer Twp., Guernsey Co., OH, 1820, but, of course, only the head of household was named in 1820. A younger Ebenezer was born that year in Guernsey Co., per Pilot.FamilySearch.org: Ebenezer, b. Guernsey Co., OH, d. 19 May 1899, aged 79, Dover, Athens, OH. Tombstone says Ebenezer, b. 10 May 1820.

In 1830, Andrew DANE was of Monroe T., Perry Co., OH.

In 1840, Andrew DANES was of Salt Creek, Perry Co., OH. His first wife, Sarah Hale McCORMICK, died in 1831, bu. W. State St. Cem., Athens, OH.

In 1850, Trimble T., Athens Co.,OH, Andrew DANE, 51, PA; Rosanna, 19, OH; & Samuel, 19, OH.

[He actually married Roseanna SPEARE 14 Apr. 1853, Athens Co. He m. 1 or 4 July 1861, Athens Co., Elizabeth, widow of _ LATTIMORE/LATTIMER & _ RUTTER.]

In 1860, Trimble, Athens, OH, Andrew A., 61, PA; Rosanna, 26 [?] OH; Lafayette, 9, OH.

In 1870, he was of Freeman, Crawford Co., WI, also there in 1880: Andrew DAINS, 82, PA; Elizabeth, 72, PA. He did have land in Section 32, Twp. 11 - 6, Crawford Co., WI. Google BLM +"land patents."

USGenWeb says that he sold land in Richland [?] Co., WI, while a resident of Allamakee Co., IA. Richland is just east of Crawford, so I suppose he could have had land in both counties.

Oak Hill Cem., Lansing Twp., Allamakee Co., IA, lists him as DAVIS as well as DAINS. He d. 18 Feb. 1883 of pneumonia & diabetes, death certificate, 1:19:207, indexed as Andrew A. DAMES, 85.

What information do you have on the ancestry of Andrew Amdrice DAINS?

In your post, you state that Andrew Amdrice Dains was the son of Ebenezer Dains and Margaret Beard, NOT Asa Dains and Jane Kasson. Do you have any defininitve documentation attesting to this?

Charlotte,
I have a good deal of information about Ella and her Dains siblings and ancestors. I have a transcibed copy of the family pages of Hannah Woodruff Welton's bible in which Ella Aurelia's marriage is recorded.(and also other Weltons). Wilmot Dains is the brother of my ancestor, Henry C. Dains. I also have a transcribed copy of a letter dated 1900 from Angeline Dains Hungerford, the sister of Ella Aurelia. It talks about the Oakville Dains and about the father of Wilmot and Henry C.
Will share more info.
Delight Champagne

I saw your posting on ancestry.com

Have you run across a Carlotte/Carlotta Dains who married John Straight and in 1880 was living in Brooklyn? She was born about 1857 either Connecticut or New York. Her father's name was Charles Francis Dains and her mother's maiden name was Deveraux.

Any information appreciated.

Re: LYDIA DAINS

This Lydia Dains is my direct line ancestor.

The Adams family is generally referred to and listed in the census as mulatto while living in Greene County Pennsylvania but several of the men married white women. Lydia is always known to be white in the census.

I have wondered if the Daines family was one of the petitioners from Greene County who asked the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania that interracial marriages be outlawed. It is possible that Lydia was disowned by her family.

There are bits and pieces of data about these families, but, partly because of the spelling variations, they're difficult to put together. Here's one line I found, but I haven't verified except as noted below.

John DAIN (1850/1, IL - 1897, IL; s/o Lucinda CULVER & James DAIN) m. 7 Dec. 1873, Christian Co., IL, Sarah Elizabeth JOY (24 July 1853 - 1937) dau/o Clara M. HALFORD & Jas. Wm. JOY. James DAIN m. 3 Sep. 18[30?], Guernsey Co., OH, Lucinda CULVER, b. 15 Apr. 1814, dau/o Levi CULVER (3 Dec. 1776 - 17 Dec. 1835, OH) & Nancy MARSHALL.

In Christian Co., IL, 1860: DANE, James, 60; L(a)ucinda, 46; James W., 16; Elizabeth, 14; John, 10.
DANE, Robert, 24; Lunetta, 20 {sic, Lucetta}.

FamilySearch database of the 1880 Census, Buckhart, Christian Co., IL, DAIN: John, 27, IL OH OH; Sarah, 25, IL TN TN; Lulu L., 10; Benjamin Louis, 5; Stella M., 3.

Christian Co., IL, 1900: DAIN, Sarah, 44; Benjamin, 25; Clara, 14.

John & Sarah had, probably all in Christian Co., IL:

"Lulu," b. ca. 1870.
Benjamin Louis, b. 17 Sep. 1875, m. after 1900, Mary POFFENBARGER, b. 2 Sep. 1881, IL.
Stella M., b. ca. 1877, m. 21 July 1897, John Artemas PRATER [in 1900, apparently of St. Louis, MO: John, 24; Stella, 22; Byrddle/Byrddie? 1].
Clara Melvina (10 Feb. 1886 - 12 Je. 1937, Christian Co.) m. 15 July 1914, Christian Co., Frank ALTOM.

Online database of Illinois Marriages to 1900, Christian County, DAIN
Hannah M., 2 Nov. 1856, Elijah H. The immigrant Abraham had a son Thomas (16 Jan. 1677, CT - 1 Oct. 1739, CT) who m. Hannah DAVIS & had Hannah, Joseph, Tabitha, Benjamin, Thomas, & Ebenezer.

The 1800 Pennsylvania Census had DANE
Caleb, Lancaster Co.
Daniel, Mifflin Co.
James, York Co.
John, Northumberland Co.
Samuel, Chester Co.
Thomas, Butler Co.

Hello, Debby: I have to apologize for not responding to your message sooner. I have been recovering from injuries suffered when I fell down a flight of stairs at our home, and haven't been able to use my computer.

Abraham Dains (b. about 1640) has long been a roadblock to many genealogists who have been searching for his parents and siblings without success. His grandson, Abraham Dains (b. about 1702) had at least one brother - Peter Dains (b. about 1700).
Although I have very extensive records about the descendants of Abraham, I don't have anything about his parent or siblings.

An interesting note: We have branches of the Buckingham family and the Trewartha family who emigrated to Australia in the mid 1850's. They have prospered and grown to rather large families. They are directly related to the Dain family, and I have been in communication with several of them for several years now. I can't tell from their e-mail addresses, but I think most of both families live in the Victoria area.

If there is any way I can assist you with your research, please let me know. I will gladly send you anything in my database. I am very interested in seeing if you are related in any way to my branch of the Dains/Dean family. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Bob Dean
