To VirginiaCrenshaw: Hi! Robert Stephenson Dakers is my great-great grandfather. I know that his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather were all named Robert as well. I also know that his mother's name was Elizabeth. Her maiden name was Anderson. Do you know anything else about him? Please reply!

Hello there,
I came across your message while doing some work on Robert Alexander (or Archibald) Dakers (1866-1954). He was an artist and editor of the Haddington Courier in East Lothian, Scotland.

While looking him up in the National Archives here I found this, which might be new and a bit of a surprise to you:

National Archives of Scotland.
AD14/48/240. Precognition against Robert Gillies Dakers for the crime of bigamy at Monzie manse, Monzie parish, Perthshire,1848.

JC26/1848/32A, Trial papers relating to Robert Gillies Dakers for the crime of bigamy at Monzie manse, Monzie parish, Perthshire. Tried at High Court, Perth, 20 Apr 1848.

I would welcome any info on Robert, the artist as I believe he may also have been a photographer.

Cheers,
Joe

Hi there,

I am a Dakers, although have married three years ago but am still very much a Dakers. There are not many left in my family now and we have always tried to trace our origins.

My grandmother Dorothy sadly passed away last year. My father (Michael) and brother (Oliver) both still very much alive and well have traced ancestors to Hawick in Scotland where there was a well respected pastor under the name of Dakers.

That's all we know. If we can help anyone in any way we will be happy to do so.

All the best,

Lorna

Hi Roger,

I feel that there is a great possibility that we are related. If so, the couple you mention would also be my GG grandparents making us 3rd cousins. I would be interested in any information you have that would help prove this. I have been told that George Ferrier DAKERS b. 1843/1844 is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Montrose but I have no proof of this. He could very well have been buried on Rossie Island. I know definitely that he is not buried at Sleepy Hillock.

I am also interested in how you tie in with the DAKERS. George Ferrier DAKERS b. 1896 had a girlfriend in the North East of England prior to his heading off to the First World War. She had a child out of wedlock that we understand was called George DAKERS. George Ferrier DAKERS above used to keep in touch with his son when living here in Canada.

If you wish we can continue to connect on this, perhaps offline.
I suspect that our Elizabeths are not the same person. I have a will transcript of Elizabeth's father, James DAKERS, dated 18/8/1871 which names "...Elizabeth Dakers or Craigie, wife of John Craigie, Shipmaster, indicating that John Craigie was alive and married to Elizabeth Dakers in 1871 having been married by that time for some 20 years.

James Dakers was stated to be a shipowner at the time of his death and the inventory shows him to have had a quarter share in a Schooner called Zephyr, registered in Montrose.

Kind Regards

Roger Brunning
Northumberland

Hi Alex,

I have checked the names on your list with those of my known ancestors and 2 appear to be similar to sisters on my list, they are:

Isabella DAKERS (yours b 1829/130 in Craig) mine born 21/3/1828 in Craig. Isabella died a spinster on 15/7/1894 in Montrose.
and
Agnes DAKERS (yours b 1845/1846 in Craig) mine born 13/7/1843 in Craig. Agnes married John Coulson Abt 1881 and had 4 children.

These 2 girls were daughters of James DAKERS b Abt 1799 in Angus!, d 6/5/1880 and Catherine BAIN b Abt 1798 in Inverkeillor, d 4/9/1848, both living at Ferryden, a tiny hamlet betweeen Craig and Montrose by the time of their deaths. They married in Craig on 16/8/1823. They had 5 other children, 1 f and 4 m. These are my GG grandparents and I have nothing further back than them. They have a gravestone in the Rossie Island Cemetery, Montrose which confirms much of the above information.

Regards

Roger Brunning
Northumberland

Hi!

Sorry, but all the Daker line that I am connectd to originated in Yorkshire, around the city of York. There may be others that I have yet to discover.

The earliest I have gotten back to is c. 1730 - a John Daker/Ann Wilkinson who lived in Spofforth, Yorkshire.

There are lots of Daker people still in Yorkshire, but have yet to find anyone in Scotland, though that is not very far away. There may be a connection further back in time.

Keep me in mind. Sincerely, Gloria Lombardi
azrr42@cis-broadband.com (my email).

Hello, (sorry don't have your name)

I have an Elizabeth Dakers, b.21 Mar 1826 in Craig, Angus who married John Craigie, b.about 1822 in Benholm, Angus. They married 04 Feb 1851 in Craig and had children James(12/12/1851), John(abt 1854), David(abt 1857), William(abt 1859) and Bella(abt 1867). I have no later information on Elizabeth than that; however, I do go back 1 generation to her parents James Dakers and Catherine Bain together with her siblings. Elizabeth was my Great-grandaunt.

If you have any further information, I would appreciate hearing from you. If she is also your relative, then I suppose I should end this email with:

Your Cousin, Roger Brunning, Northumberland

Steve, my grandmother, Jemima Macrae Dakers, was the daughter of the Jemima Macrae on the 2nd headstone. I also have a photo of the 1st stone and I can confirm that the 2 headstones belong to the same family. I have family photographs and some more information about the family if you are still interested.

Thought I would mention Dakers married Morrison in Forfar, Angus, Scotland. My husband's gggaunt Annie Peterkin Morrison, b. in Forfar, married Maxwell Dakers, b. March 26, 1869 on April 3, 1895 in the town of Forfar. They had three children: Annie Peterkin Morrison Dakers b. Feb. 29, 1896, Mary Ann Dakers b. September 22, 1897 & Frank Wilson Dakers, b. May 28, 1899. There is an older step brother from Annie's first marriage. David Weir-Souter Duncan b. September 27, 1891. Annie died in Montrose, Angus December 09, 1943. Maxwell Dakers' parents were: Alexander Dakers & Margaret Christie. There is another son listed on the IGI - David Waterston Dakers b. Aug. 5, 1874, also in Forfar. Looks as if Maxwell died around 1932 in Forfar. Does this branch fit in with anyone else?

Hello Noreen, my cousin (too complicated to figure out the distant removes bit...)

This is so exciting to discover more family! I too am in California, in the Central San Joaquin Valley. My father was the only child of William Murray Dakers (b.1901), grandson of David Smith Dakers (brother to your grandmother). Dad came to the U.S. in 1953 from Scotland where he met my mother who was attending Fresno State at the time, fell in love, and settled in this general area. I can't wait to tell my brother about you and Peggy Lee Noll!

Hello Noreen,

Are you related to Mary Hampton Dakers b. 1876? My great-grandfather was her older brother David Smith Dakers born 1874. I have a portion of the Dakers family tree dating all the way back to the latter 1600s thanks to cousins my brother and I just discovered recently in Edinburgh. Please feel free to e-mail me and lets compare notes.
My grandfather moved from Scotland to Brithish Columbia in Canada in the late 1890's or early 1900's. and had a son named Arthur Dakers. About 1925, they moved to the United States and settled just north of Seattle, Washington. My grandfather died in 1960 and my dad died in 1994. Both of their names were Arthur Dakers. My grandmother also moved to British Columbia the same time as my grandfather. Her last name was Gill.
Both she and my grandfather were born and raised near Edinborough.

Dean Dakers
I am just starting researching my family history-background. Our family name is Dakers. The only thing I know so far is that back in the family line our name was changed from Dacres to Dakers and you are the first person I have heard use the older version of the name. What do you know about the change?-
