I can appreciate the initial confusion when first seeing the dialect (as I imagine you are experiencing).

Douglas Scott’s massive work is an excellent reference for understanding the Borders area tongue. It also is great for anyone interested in the Hawick area and its people from long ago. I might note again that this is a very large file and does take a while to download.
