I've been reading the threads on William and Margaret and can't help but wonder if people have mixed up a William Dalglish born 1791 Scotland with William Daglish christened 14 May 1786 in Gateshead Durham England and died 1843 (according to my source). Local people tended to put their own local spelling onto newcomers and I wonder if this happened here. William Daglish did marry Isabella White in 1820 in Alston Northumberland, where she was from, I don't know of any second marriage, not to say there wasn't one, but his parents were William Daglish - son of Mary Elliot and William Daglish, and Dorothy Gee - daughter of David Gee, all from the Newcastle and Gateshead area. To have two such distinct spellings in this period of history would argue that there are two separate families involved.

Sanford James DALGLISH b 1942 Erie, PA, USA d 2013 Dayton, PA, USA
Sanford James Dalglish, age 70,
passed away Sunday, February 24, 2013
in Dayton, Pa. He was born February 28, 1942 in Erie, Pa., son of the late John and Ethel Miller Dalglish. Sandy's father died when he was ten years old, but he got an early education traveling with his parents and brothers back and forth to California, and then Arizona. He was given a Scottish name because his father was born in Scotland. His nickname was Sandy because they did not want him to be called "Red", as he had bright red hair. Sandy was a good student and an excellent athlete. Growing up he was a star little league pitcher, and home run hitter. He was a 1960 graduate of Lawrence Park High School where he lettered all four years in both football (quarterback) and basketball. In both sports he was awarded All County honors for three years and was recognized as All State in basketball in his Senior year. The Erie Times-News chose Sandy as one of the best 100 athletes of the Century in 2000, and in 2009 he was inducted into the Wesleyville-Iroquois-Lawrence Park Hall of Fame. Sandy graduated from Gannon College with a degree in Business Administration. His freshman year, however, he attended Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pa. There he played basketball on their NAIA National Championship team. Following college, Sandy worked most of his career at American Sterilizer of Erie, but had sales representative assignments in Columbia, Mo., Phoenix, Ariz., Pittsburgh and Erie. Preceding him in passing were his first wife, Patricia Cunningham Dalglish; an infant brother, John; brother Jack and his wife Pat; and his stepfather, Anthony Dunst. Survivors include his wife Debra and their family; brother, Edward Dalglish (Sally) of Erie; sister, Nancy Lucore of Pflugerville, Texas, brother, Robert Dunst (Chris) of Chalfont, Pa.; and numerous nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service and burial has been arranged by the Bauer-Bly Funeral Home for February 27 in Dayton, Pa. at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Donnell House Hospice, Washington, PA 15301 or John Kanzius Cancer Research, 130 West 8th St., Erie, PA 16501.
Erie Times-News on February 26, 2013.

Hi Leigh

Alice Margaret Dalglish was my grandmother, and I suspect that your grandmother was Veloria (or as I referred to her, Aunty Lawly) and therefore your father must be one of my cousins?. Have really only relooked at this website today, after many many years, and saw this message, I first started doing the family tree back in 1984 with my grandmothers help and some help from the Dalglish's from many distant cousins, happy to help out with any information you would like to know.

Have just seen this thread. I have no direct connection to this family but do run the Daglish One-Name Study which studies the name.

I have William Daglish's parents as another William Daglish and Dorothy Gee, married 28 May 1785 in Gateshead. William married Isabella White on 1 July 1820 in Alston, Cumberland.

Would be interested to compare notes. You can contact me at daglish@one-name.org.

With best wishes,
Stephen Daglish
Daglish One-Name Study
www.one-name.org/profiles/daglish.html
Hi there

It seems we know as much about this family as each other. If we work together then we should be able to put something together. I know more about the Goftons than the Daglish. I know very little about William. I do have a copy of their marriage licence. William and Margaret's children (as I know them) George (b 1835), Joseph (b 1838, David (b 1840) and Mary (b 1843). We both seem to come from George. George married Mary McCulloch (I have a photo of her with her daughters). Their children are Isabella (b 1864), Margaret (b 1866), Mary Gofton (b 1868), George Gofton (b 1871), Elizabeth Donkin (b 1873) (this is my great grandmother), Ruth (b 1875), Annie (b1877) and Mabel Laws (b 1880).

The Laws name first appears in my tree as Mary Laws (1769 to 1840) she married a George Gofton and is my 4th great grandmother and is the mother of Margaret Gofton who married William Daglish. So this is where the Law name seems to start.

I would like to know more about William's death and his first wife. Who is Charles Gofton Young's parents? Family here and overseas are looking for information on Mary McCulloch (Mabel Laws' mother). I have couple of clues but family in England are having trouble confirming Scottish records.

I would also love any photos you have, I am more than happy to share.

The best way to contact me is at

quiltedcottage@bigpond.com

We can chat and link trees (mine is private).

Cheers

Kerin-Lea

Hi Kerin

Sorry, but I was doing my board admin job and trying to disentangle the thread before it got too complicated (and believe me threads can get really convoluted and miles away from the original post!) and get more info so that posters could help you better.

In case you haven;t seen it - on the LDS site https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11593-41100-17?...

You will see the image of their marriage entry where it states that William was living in the Parish of St John's, Newcastle. They were married by Licence.

The Diocese of Durham Licences are online (free) also on the LDS site https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/show#uri=http...

which may give you some family members or some more information to help in the search.

If you didn't know before then all the Durham Diocese BT's are online at the LDS site https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/show#uri=http...

You can't search them, but have to browse in the old fashioned way , but they can be really useful as the Bishop between abt 1780 and 1815 insisted on loads more info than was stricly required on his registers eg maiden names, place of birth of mother's, who their father was , number of previous children etc

Sorry if I have told you stuff you already knew..

Good luck!

Fiona

I am not sure if you are answering my questions or if you are asking me a question. My William Daglish is birth unknown, therefore parents unknown. He married Margaret Gofton on 18 Sept 1834 at Ponteland, Northumberland, England. He died in his 50s and was a cabinet-maker in Newcastle upon Tyne. Bankrupted several times (in 1813 and again in 1841). Married twice with nine children. This all the information I have and some may be incorrect. Margaret Gofton and a William Daglish did marry and one of their children is George Daglish. Are you able to help?

I think William was born at Cross Arthurlie, Barrhead, Parish of Neilston, and baptized 17th July 1791, son of John Dalglish, a calico printer and Agnes Ewing [various spellings]. John Dalglish was probably my 4x great grandfather Alexander Dalglish's brother. Alexander and John both appeared in Neilston Parish in the late 1700s, and both were calico printers at Cross Arthurlie. Both had a first son called William. Your William did well for himself, becoming the manager of a cotton mill.
This Dalglish family MAY have come from Stirlingshire.
Hope this is of interest, and do not hesitate to contact me.
Regards
Arthur

Emily married my great-grandfather Thomas Herbert Sparkes around mid-1890s in Birmingham.
This couple possibly appear on the 1901 census and although I have printed this off the dates are somewhat 'out' by a few years.
I cannot trace a birth date for her but have found a possible family in 1881 (father Samuel) yet this conflicts with another source of the same name.
Ring any bells to anyone?

Dalglish ancestors in Deptford or Wimbledon (London, UK) 19C

Ann Dalglish was my 3 x Gt Grandmother. She was born in 1786 and married my 3 x Gt Grandfather James Panton in 1808 in Camberwell. I am trying to research her family. She possibly had a brother Thomas who married Frances Jones in 1807 in Lewisham and had 5 children (Jane 1809, Sarah 1814, Eliza Mary Ann, 1817, Joseph 1824 and John 1827. There is a James Dalglish from Wimbledon who married a Hannah Tegg or Sarah Griggs in the 1780s who could possibly be Ann's father or uncle. If anyone has any of these people in their tree I would love to hear from them.

I have a James Gault Dalglish married Mary Kennedy Oct. 2 1865. She was born and raised in Nepean Township, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada. In trying to find out who he was I came across a couple of Dalglishs in the Carleton Township area, one James (I'm sure) who was a merchant. I wasn't sure if he was my James Gault or another James, but you could check that area out. I'm still working on it, but have to head to Nepean for any more info.
