Re: Joshua Dallas 1802-1879

I don't think my Dallas' are related to yours, but I am fascinated by your dilemma. May I suggest that you don't seem to have a lot of info on marriage and births as yet. Sometimes cemetery records are not accurate (or tombstones either) for a variety of reasons, and thus the info which you have access to is inaccurate.

I wonder if Polly is actually a daughter of Joshua and Mary? Mary would have been only 16 when Polly was born, but it's possible, and that when Joshua died family were looking for a plot and the matching one to Polly's was unused for whatever reason. Did you know that Polly is a nickname or derivative for Mary? How many wives do you think that Joshua had?

I think you need to try to find him under initials, misspelled first name, or whatever, and look for more marriage records to see if he had more than one wife and where he was located. Perhaps the couple were separated around the time of the Civil War and never got together again? I am really interested to see if any of this helps you, so I hope you post again.

Joshua Dallas 1802-1879

I am researching the Dallas surname for my grandaughter. She is linked through Joshua Dallas´s son John B. Dallas who m. Rhoda Ellen Cole in 1859 in Cooper Co. MO.

Joshua Dallas 1802-1879 and wife Mary Woods 1806-?? present a conundrum which I am having trouble understanding.

According to many researchers, Joshua´s wife Mary d. Jan. 1849 and one could imagine she just wore out as she already had at least 15 children. This death date is seemingly confirmed by the Midwest Gen. Center, Mid Continent Public Library whose records show:

"Joshua Dallas (buried) in the Roscoe cemetery as having died 7 April 1879, just before the mortality schedule which starts in June. Next to him is a Polly Dallas age 27 years who died January 1849."

1. How then, and why, is Joshua indexed on the 1850 census with wife Mary and at least 10 children?

Joshua seems to disappear after 1850 and is elusive thereafter, not being indexed on census records. According to court records, he served on jury duty in St. Clair Co. as late as 1858.

It is documented that he fought as a Confederate soldier in the CW and was captured, then released in PA at wars end.

2. How then, is supp. wife Mary 75 and widowed, indexed in 1880 in St. Clair Co. with son Boon (sic) and servant Nancy Keeton 15?

Daniel Boone Dallas seems to be living with sister Mary J. Richey (indexed as Hannah) in 1900.

Daniel Boone Dallas is clearly shown by his 1910 MO death certif., to be the son of Joshua. His mother was unknown to the informant, C. S. Stratton.

The records are contradictory in that a Polly Dallas clearly died in 1849 and Joshua was buried beside her in the Roscoe Cem. in St. Clair Co. MO in 1879.

I am drawing no conclusions but can anyone explain this conundrum?

Duane Mills
Stavanger, Norway
I am responding to your message of 25 Sep 2000 in which you state that Alexander James Dallas, father of George Mifflin Dallas (VP) had at least 8 children. I have gone through the History of the Family of Dallas book carefully but could only find five children listed (George Mifflin Dallas, Alexander James Dallas (jr), Charles Alexander Dallas, Robert Dallas, Trevanion Barlow Dallas)- do you know who the other three children are? And, where I could find any documentation of them?
Thank you.
- Bill (email: whallahan@rochester.rr.com)

Thank you so much for this info. I know that some Dallas' came from Edinburgh area and some from Moray, Scotland. There is a town, villiage and places with the Dallas name. I would love to get info about all your families. The Canadian branch could give us a clue of when they may have arrived. Alot of the immigrants came in waves and Canada was a cheaper passage for most. Then they can come down into US.

You do not say which country you are interested in finding Dallas'. I have Dallas ancestors in 3 countries after they left Scotland, and don't know where they come from in Scotland. Around 1800 Charles Dallas appears in Barbados as a sugar planter. One of his sons John Isaac Dallas, a physician, and his family left Barbados around 1848 or 1849, spent a brief time on the island of Tobago, before emigrating to the Hamilton Ontario, Canada area. One of John's younger sons and his family moved to Chicago in 1890- Andrew Chisholm Dallas. Andrew ran a successful metal business in Chicago. I have more info on all of these families. In addition, family stories indicate that a Dallas closely related to perhaps Charles, was in the area of Dallas Texas around the time it was first established. I have found nothing on this and have no first name of this person.

No I'm not a member, but would like to get further info about the Dallas Family Ass'n. Please note: the Dallas' in my line went first to Barbados, and I wonder if they had been in Jamaica, or another island or possibly South America before that, after leaving Scotland? They seem to have been educated, and with some financial means.

ONe of my ancestors had 2 uncles or gr uncles, that went west to the gold rush. Thought it might have been a James and John and one stayed and one came back. I think James Monroe Dallas, s/o Ashford, had sons James and John.

From our family history.
Probably not a connection, but two James Dallases in CA during gold rush time just has to be looked in to. Are these Dallas names in your family tree at all?

Kay (Dallas) Cameron

Re: WAYNE COUNTY ILLINOIS DALLAS FAMILY

I am descended from the Wayne County Dallas families. In fact, our family used to have reunions in Sims. They also lived around Fairfield. We are also related to the Linders from that area. My grandfather was Louie Andrew Dallas, son of William A. Dallas and Sarah Gilman Dallas Campbell. The father of William A. was William J. Dallas. Lineage traced back to an Ashford G. Dallas, born South Carolina.

FYI: We have a Dallas reunion every year and three avid researchers, one from Iowa, one from New York, and one from right here in Douglas County, Illinois. He will most likely be at the reunion, and always brings his genealogy in case we have something new to report. The reunion this year is on August 17 at 12 noon at the American Legion Hall in Atwood, Illinois. I'd like to invite you. I have a CD PowerPoint program partially prepared for this part of the family, and would be happy to forward to you as much as I have.

Kay (Dallas) Cameron
I have a James Dallas who migrated to the California I believe in 1852. There is a record of a James Dallas arriving in Downieville Sept. 11, 1852. There was another Dallas line that arrived around the same time (I believe they had a James as well), but they are not my relations.
My James eventually settled in Napa and married, etc. This is my direct line.
In census and marriage records, he is listed as being born in either Ohio or Pennsylvania circa 1829-1830. He named his first born son John.
I have no record of his parents or other relations.
Does any of this fit with your line?

Re: Who's your oldest Dallas ancestor?

My oldest Dallas ancestor is John C. Dallas. According to his death certificate, he was born 29 February 1836 in Ohio. He died 28 January 1916 in rural (near the town of Damascus) Clackamas County, Oregon. John married twice. The first marriage was to Mary Jane Pennington and they had at least five children:

William R. born 27 November 1858 in Missouri
Aaron W. born about 1862 in Missouri
Effie Jane born 20 January 1864 in Iowa
George C. born 23 October 1869 in Iowa
Silsby S. born 26 December 1872 in Iowa

Where an exact birthdate is given, information comes from the death certificates.

By 1900, John had married his second wife, Mary (Marie?) who was from Prussia.

George C. was the one who gave the information for John's death certificate. George didn't know anything about his (George's) grandfather but stated his grandmother's maiden name was Smith. He didn't know her first name.

In 1860, the family was in Bates County, Missouri. In 1870 and 1880, they are in Appanoose County, Iowa. I suspect that they were in Gates County, Nebraska in 1885. In 1900, they are in Rawlins County, Kansas. In 1910, they were in Clackamas County, Oregon.

With the exception of some death certificates, some marriage records for John's descendants and information gleaned from census reports, that's what I know about this family.

I have yet to have the film developed but I recently went to Damascus Cemetery and took photos of what Dallas headstones I could find.
