Hannah PETTIT DALLY, Phila / NYC 1801 m. Thomas Fenton

Several years ago someone posted a message about a marriage between Hannah DALLY, daughter of Gifford DALLY and Thomas Fenton of Philadelphia in 1811. My research shows something different.

Gifford DALLY and Hannah PETTIT married in 1767 NYC. They lived in both NYC and Philadelphia. They did have a daughter Hannah who was born in NYC in 1788 and baptized at Trinity Church, NYC. The marriage of Hannah DALLY and Thomas Fenton, cordwainer, of Philadelphia, however, was actually in January 1801, not 1811. It occurred in NYC. One newspaper notice refers to her as Miss Hannah Dally, another as Mrs. Hannah Dally. I believe it is actually Gifford Dally's widow, Mrs. Hannah Dally, who married Thomas Fenton. They would have been about the same age, both widowed. The daughter, Hannah Dally, would have only been 13 years old when Thomas Fenton remarried, so it must have been her mother who married him.

Gifford and Hannah DALLY had a daughter Sarah, who married Thomas Annely, gunsmith, in 1791 in Philadelphia. Thomas and Sarah lived on Sassafras St. (now called Race St.) in Philadelphia, just two doors away from Thomas Fenton and his family. It is easy to imagine that both families would know each other well. I believe that after Gifford Dally and his daughter Sarah Dally Annely both died in the 1798 yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia, Thomas Annely took his mother-in-law in. She would then be living on the same street as Thomas Fenton.

The reason they married in NYC instead of Philadelphia is because Hannah Dally relocated to NYC around 1799. There is a letter in the National Archives from Thomas Annely to his supervisor at the War Department. Thomas had been hired as a weapons inspector at the new armory at Harpers Ferry. When he visited it for the first time, he realized that there were no proper accommodations for his family, including his mother-in-law. He requested more time to take them back up to NYC. Another letter mentions that he was successful in placing his mother-in-law comfortably in NYC and had put his children "out to board." This is probably why Hannah and Thomas Fenton married in NYC. Also, the Dally, Pettit, and Annely families are all from the lower Manhattan area originally.

I am still searching for Hannah Pettit Dally Fenton's death record. Most likely her death occurred in Philadelphia.

If anyone is researching any of these families, I would be interested in exchanging information.

Have reason to believe that Paul L. Dally, who was in Cochise Co., Arizona, for the 1930 census, is the person I am looking for. Also have reason to believe that he was already married to Eloise by that time, and that he died in 1999 in Los Angeles Co., California. If this sounds familiar, please contact me. Thanks. There was also an Erna and Herta. Lillie was Tillie which must have been short for something. There is also a sister that never came to the US - I don't know her name. I can check on the birth and death dates for Erna and Herta if you would like.

There were also a bunch of cousins to my father who are in the Chicago area but I don't know them at all.

Leta: Thank you for the info. Name Dally is French from place in Picardy, Ailly Sur Somme. There was a Dally family in Ireland (Galway) and they were French who moved back to Paris in the early 1900s.
I came across the Dallys from Dortmund, Germany and will have to go back in my records.
Tom,

Sorry - didn't realize no name would show up. My name is Leta. My father's father was also named Theodore and his mother was named Wilhemina nee Schumann. There were seven or eight children in the family total. We are from Chicago so our time is CST. I think GMT may be Greenich Mean Time. The family immigrated from Dortmund Germany to the US around 1922.

My mother's name is Mary nee Bowen and the Bowens and Rices (her mother's maiden name) have quite a family tree - at least the Rices do. I found that online as well. My mother was from East Texas.

I have been trying to figure out where the name Dally came from. It appears that it is either Irish or French. I would prefer the Irish. But I have no idea since Dally is hardly a germanic name.

Any information would be helpful.

I have a record of 100's of Dallys and would gladly send you any info you want.
I also don't know your name and assume GMT is Mountain Time.
Lots of Dallys in Montana & Wisconsin.
Hi,

I'm not sure if there is any relation - Dally isn't a very normal German name - but my father came to the US as a boy with his parents after WWI and his name is Theodore Dally. They came to Chicago, I have presumed, because of family was here but I have no idea. My grandfather was also Theodore Dally and his wife's name was Wilhemina nee Schuman.

I have tried for years to figure out how Dallys got to Germany. Are they Irish immigrants to the continent or were they French. I would prefer the former. If you ave any information, I would appreciate it because if the Dallys you are asking about are you relatives, we could be distant cousins.

Thomas,
My G-Grandmother, Beulah Eschenbach, wrote a story about her grandfather, John Wesley Dally, and his stories to her school about being a civil war veteran. To paraphrase:

John was born in Findley, Ohio on 15 Nov 1847. His family settled in Homer, Iowa around 1855. He enlisted as a Private in the Union Army on 5 Oct 1864 at Fort Dodge, Iowa in Co. H, 11th Iowa Infantry at age 16. He served for 9 months and 10 days mostly under General Sherman in his march to the sea. His unit also marched in the victory parade in Washington, D.C. before being sent to Louisville, KY where they were mustered out on 15 July 1865.

I hope this helps you add more Dally family Civil War history to your collection.
-- Christian

Just went tramping through woods where Ohio Dally is buried (died 1852), it is in woods on Township Road 51 not county road 51 and is between Old US 30 and New US 30 this was on October 23, 2007. Three stones are in very bad repair, a distance relative who used to own the property (Ada Ohio address) said he had to move headstones because of four wheelers and the like running them over. He propped them up on a log. He said legend is Indians buried them nearer to New US 30. but they were moved because of the new road. New owner of property isn't keeping them roped off or anything! What a thrill to find them and Mary Jane my namesake at Thompson Cemetarty County Road 28. This is my Neices email site.

Hi Carol, My name is Anthony Adamsky and as you may have read, I come in on the Dally Line through Sarah Frances Dally daughter of Charles Madison Dally (Brother of Jeremiah Dally) and Elizabeth Reed Bunn. Even though we are very very distant, we are still related and that is very neat. I would love to see the picture you have of your ancestor (mine too, sort of) in the Spanish-American war! If you could email me that, I would be so greatful. If you would like to see my family tree I have made for the Dallys (using microsoft Excel), I can email that to you if you give me you're email address.
Apparently I am related to you. My father was Robert Aitchison and brother to Wilfred Dally and Lucile Waters. I am trying to trace back from Guy Aitchison but am having no luck. By the way I have Guy Aitchison's middle name as Chaplain. I suppose it is the same person. I will contact you If I get any more information. By the way, I live in Australia.

Susan: Thank you for your information. I have that Gifford and Anne Pettit were married in Hemstead, Nassau Co, NY on 4 July 1767.
Hannah Dally b. 26 Mar 1788, christened in Trinity Church Parish, NYC, married Thomas Fenton of Philadelphia oon 1 Jun 1811 in Trinity Church Parish, NYC.
I have always wondered if Gifford Dally started the bureauracy of the US government since he hired others to supply the wood for the stoves where Congress met in NYC.
NY Marriages Prior 1784 HR 929.3H p.96 refers to "Dalley, Gifford & Anne Pettit XI p. 123 July 4, 1767"

Tom,
I have seen the marriage of Elizabeth Dally and John Annely listed before, but of course without their ages or parents' names. There might be more than one Elizabeth Dally. If the person marrying John Annely is the same Elizabeth who is the daughter of Johannis and Margarietje, that would make her a 40-something-year-old bride. There was a John Annely who served in the Rev War from NY and he had a pension.

Does anyone know if these marriage licenses can be seen in full on a Family History Library microfilm? I am hoping that the parents' names might be mentioned on the license.
Thanks.

I know this is being posted 7 years after yours but—I keep finding more and more Dally family names being entwined with mine. I am a ggg granddaughter of Charles S. and Nancy Gamberton Dally. What was General Dally's first name? The only "George" that I'm aware of is George Washington Dally who was my grandmother's brother. George married Edith Thompson. Their daughter was Dorothy who married Curtis Ireland. Their daughter is Betty Halla. I have a copy of a picture of George with his company in the Spanish Am War of 1898. Back to my original question: What was General Dally's first name? Thank you. Carol

Re: Thomas Dally, are we related???

I am also related to Thomas Jefferson Dally. My name is Carol (nee Booton) Sheeley. My mother is Margaret (nee Voorhees) Booton. Her parents were William H. and Nettie (nee Dally) Voorhees. Nettie's parents were Thomas Jefferson and Henrietta (nee Keeler) Dally. Thomas's parents were Jeremiah and Mary (nee Inslee) Dally. Jeremiah's parents were Charles S and Nancy (nee Gamberton) Dally. Charles's parents were Jeremiah and Elizabeth (nee Gage) Dally. Jeremiah's parents were Samuel and Mary (nee Jones) Dally. Samuel's parents were Charles and Elizabeth (nee Tilton) Dally. Samuel Dally, a soldier in the 1st Regiment of Middlesex County Militia NJ, fought at one time with Washington's army. He was one of the faithful few who crossed the Delaware in Mid-winter to surpise the Hessians at Trenton and he also shared in the glory of the Battle of Monmouth. Both Samuel and Jeremiah and wives are buried in the Presbyterian Church Yard in Woodbridge, NJ. This info was recorded in "Woodbridge and Vicinity" written by Rev Joseph Dally, my gg Uncle. An added note: Nettie's brother, George Washington Dally, served in the Spanish American War of 1898. I have a copy of a photo of him in uniform with five other soldiers. I am orininally from Woodbridge, NJ but have lived in SW Florida for 16 years. Carol

I'm asking because as I try to trace her parents, it seems quite probable that they belonged to the Newtown L.I. group of Pettits and not the Hempstead group. There were many Pettits in both areas.

Hi. Yes I know you live in Australia and I know you have talked to Virginia Waters Dally about family tree matters. I also know you sent her a CD with Aitchison family information. I haven't taken time to figure out exactly how we are related, but long lost relatives we probably are. Talk to you later. (It is Roy Robert-right?)
Dianna (daughter of Roma, granddaughter of Wilfred Aitchison)

Elmore Elijah Dally

I am related to Elmore Elijah Dally (1858-1932). His son Elden Gerald Dally (1892-1970) was my grandfather. My father is Bert Earl Dally (1926- ). If you would like information about this branch of the family, I can help if you don't already have it. I am interested in family tree information, I just find I don't have a lot of time to pursue it at this time. Perhaps I will hear from you soon. I will try to contact you again later, perhaps this summer, if things settle down a little around here. Dianna Dally

Elmore Elijah Dally was my grandfather too. He remarried Anna Chesney Farrell in 1904. They had nine more children. Don Dally was my father. I remember him speaking of your father and Maud too. Let me know if you have any questions.

POW/MIA Korean War DALLY

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Steuben County, Indiana as his home of record. His remains were never recovered.

Soldier: KENNETH HORTON DALLY
Born: Sept. 6, 1910, Caucasian
Date of loss: December 1, 1950, POW

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. The Dally family is one of those missing.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
