John Walker Daltons' second wife was Margaret Ann Holder, said to be from Franklin Co. TN. I went to their grave site (today) in a cemetery next to a Church of God on Orme Mountain in Marion Co. TN, near South Pittsburg. His first wife was Maude Allison. Had 2 sons, David C. and Hayden by her.

Have you tried your request on Find A Grave's website? This is free and when you go onto the site, type in your location (state and county desired) and then the cemetery you want and then you can type your request in. It gets sent out to people who volunteer to take headstone photos from that area. I do this for my area in Wisconsin and I have had lots of pictures also taken for me by others. It's a wonderful site. Try it.

Mary Dalton b 1748 New Hampshire m Bartholomew Stevens

Seeking information on parents of ancestor Mary Dalton, b 2 June 1748, Gofftown, NH md Bartholomew Stevens b 27 Apr 1767 in New Hampshire- she is the mother of ten known children; and Mary's brother Samuel Dalton, born 29 July 1754/7, Londonderry, NH, md abt 1793 to Mary or Polly Merrick who died in 1820; and md 2nd widow Rachel (Gile) Wadleigh. This Samuel Dalton had 10 children by his first wife, and two known children by his 2nd wife; and he died 1 June 1837 in Gilmanton, NH.

My information says that Mary and her brother Samuel were the children of either John, Caleb, or Samuel Dalton. And some add another probable brother, Caleb Dalton who was killed at Bunker Hill on 17 June 1775. Mary's brother Samuel Dalton was in the Revolutionary War with Mary's husband Bartholomew Stevens, and there are military pension records for both men. I have the birth date of her brother Samuel Dalton as 29 July 1754 in Londonderry, NH, but have seen it listed as born 1757.

My ancestor, Mary Dalton Stevens (1748-1838) had 10 known children: Betsy, Mehitable, Susanna, Caleb Dalton Stevens, Samuel, Dalton Stevens [my ancestor]- he md 11 Jan 1808 in Winthrop, Kennebec, Maine to Mary or Polly Atkinson; Mary, Jeremiah (mentioned in his parents' military pension applications--both parents lived with him in Portland, Maine and apparently both died in his home- Bartholomew in 1824 and Mary in 1838), John, and Serial [male], surnamed STEVENS. Her children may have all been born in NH, but she died of New Portland, Somerset, Maine. One page of her family Bible record was filed in the pension requests to prove her marriage.

Compare names of the known children of her brother Samuel Dalton (1754/7-1837): Joseph Merrick Dalton, Caleb Stevens Dalton, Samuel Gerry Dalton, Absolom, Mary, John, Joshua Little Dalton, Elbridge Gerry Dalton, and William H Harrison Dalton (by his first wife); and Sarah Ann and Lorenzo Dow Dalton (children by his 2nd wife)- surnamed DALTON. All of his children were born in NH, 1794-1828.

I have studied the Dalton family of Rockingham, County, NH and feel sure that this Mary and Samuel Dalton and their ancestors are of the Philemon Dalton family. I have corresponded in past years with descendants of several of the children of Mary Dalton Stevens.

If anyone has further information on Mary or Samuel Dalton and their parents, and where they fit in the DALTON pedigree, please contact me. Will be happy to exchange information.

Elizabeth L Nichols
nicholsel@msn.com

They were from Irish decent. Apparently the family moved to Oudsthoorn and had Ostrich Farms. He died when she was in high school so I never met him. They were many children as well. Dont know much about it all.
Shelly -

Amnyone born 1883 is tough to research as they were not alive in 1880, there is no 1890 census and females were often married by 1900. However, I find this.

1900 Hudson County NJ - Annie Plate 17, a boarder with the Henry Haddley family,. Annie "helped" in a cannery.
She was born in NJ of German-born parents. In 1920, she said father born in BREMEN, Germany. This is a key clue.

In 1880, Henry Plate, age 18, was a boarder with John Neyer, 27. Henry's father was born in BREMEN. Anna named a son Henry George.

Another researcher said her parents were Heny C. and Elizabeth (Witte) Plate.

- Ken

I think M.J. Dalton was Melissa J. , dau of Gtanville and Elizabeth Dalton of 1870 McNairy County, Tenn. M.J. was 6 mos. old. She had brothers Joseph W. 122v and Leewis 6 and both wewre in 1900 Laf. Co. Ms.

In 1900 Lafayette Countyy, Ms, J.S. Hanbey born Oct 1860 in Ms of NC father and Ala mother had a ewife Martha J. . A dasu was Jettie S. born 1894.

In 1910 Lafayette, "Jake" S. Haney born 1859, pts the same states. His wife was Ella age 32 with a dau Jettie 15.

In Tallahatchie , Ms. in 1880 was Jacob S. Haney 18 born Ms., son of H. (I think Hataway) born NC and Nancy (Kiser) born Ala. , in Ms at least by 1858. Nancy wass age 60, H. 65 but hard to read. Looks 45.

So Jacob seems to have had a rhird wfe (the first ?) named Martha J. and those children were likely hers and Jacob's.

- Ken

I tried to check this out years ago without nuch success, Meek Dalton;, about the same age as Narcus (these names started it being "Marquis de Lafayette" but go messed up) also wewt to Palo Pinto County. In 1860, Meed was in Washington County, Ark. He was ftrom Ovrerton County, Tenn. and a likely son of Carter D. Dalton of that county. Marcus MIGHT have beenb another son of Carter but I cannot find proof.

- Ken

Reuben and Elozabrth (Shockley) Dalton came to Grsinger County, Tenn about 1802 from Grayson County, Virginia.
By about 1860, there were 75-100 Dalton families in Grainger , all descendants of this Reuben.

On this thread, we are flainbg about and getting nowhere.

May I suggest you each start your own thread about your Grainger ancestors and give what data you have, especially rough dates as they used names such as Reuben and Carter over and over. There is no evidence that Reuben's clan was Indian-related.

I and others have tons of data on these Grainger Daltons but wew need some specifics, not guesses. Much family lore is wildly off the mark as see on this thread.

- Ken

Ken,

I was in a hurry when I responded. I do appreciate your reply and help. I know for certain that these children are not children of Jacob and Martha. My grandmother, Bettie Jane, did have half siblings but with wife #3, Ellen. Also, my elderly aunt, daughter of Bettie, said that she THOUGHT that one of M. J. or Melissa's children was playing on a railroad track and was hit by a train and died. Her information was that Melissa was not the same mentally after that but does not know what happened to her. I think if this was Melissa, she would have been 36 years old in 1906. I would think that she had been married before Jacob and these are her children from that marriage. contact me please coquessia@yahoo.com

Ken,
Thanks for your reply. Yes, Jacob Silas was first married to Martha Frances Adair. They had 2 daughters, Bettie Jane (my grandmother) and Jettie Susan. Three other children were dead in the 1900 census. We knew he had three wives as the third wife, Ellen, is sister to my grandfather, James W. Franklin. The second wife had been a mystery. My elderly aunt, who has since died, said she thought he was married to a Melissa but we had no proof. The marriage license is all we have and haven't a clue what happened to her. None if the children living with Jacob in 1906 are his and Martha's and I haven't found another J.S. Haney in that area. A younger J.S. Haney is a nephew. They only had the two living children, Bettie and Jettie. You at least gave me the name of Melissa. Are you related? Thanks again!

Coque, TX

My grandfather married M.J. Dalton on July 22, 1906 in Lafayette Co. MS. On July 1, 1909, he married Ellen Franklin. I assume M. J. Dalton died. In the 1906 'Educable Children of Lafayette County' book, my grandfather, Jacob Silas Haney had Maudy age 12, Claudy age 9, July age 17, Rube age 8 and Sallie age 5, living with him. I assume they are the children of M.J. Dalton as they are not children of J.S. Haney. Any help on M.J. Dalton would be appreciated.

Hi,

I do not know of this Dalton but there is a reference in the Cape archives to a John Edward Dalton, namely his estate papers. If you want to, I can point you to a resecrcher who can retrieve these files for a small fee of course) and tell you what's in them.
MOOC 6/9/3952 31192 DALTON, JOHN EDWARD. ESTATE PAPERS. 1931	1931
Does this date accord wihth what you know of his date of death?

BW,

Eira@makepeace.net
